The idea is to show a civilisation escaping from its home planet striked by a large group of asteroids...

by the look of your name it seems we have dutch reinforcements ;)Thanks for the warm welcome to you and Dobermunk, but I had to disappoint you... I am born and still live in Berlin/Germany... but we are just neighbors, are'nt we? (Why can't we be friends, why... *singing*)
Currently, I am still working on my concept. I am not shure about the camera angle but I will change it, so that the ships will escape right to the viewer and the asteroids will hit the earth at the center of the image...
But more soon...
P.S.: My new title for the image is "Broken Moon" cause the big asteriod first hits one of the planet's moons, split it into several big parts before hitting the planet's surface... next WIP picture will show it!

This is just a first 3d sketch render. I just tested some perspectives and angles and this was my first render of the idea "Broken Moon"...
I really like the idea but like in the first,there need to be more asteroids, more ships and more impacts onto the planet's surface.
I really plan to build a swarm of escaping ships (hundreds or may be billions) and also hundreds of stones, asteroids and particles.
In my view the moon should be a bit bigger and there will be a dust clouds arround the moon parts cause the collision.
When I finished this 3D blocking I will do a final detailed concept sketch
to plan the details before starting the design of the elements like the ships or asteriods.

Ohoooh, that asteroid impacting on that poor planet (wich makes some pretty shockwaves). More and different types of ship would add a lot to an already dramatic scene.

Very nice concept! I would go with the first concept sketch, with the rain of asteroids on the left, and evacuation on the right(I like the contrast betwean red/orange on the left and light/blue on the right). And I agree with RobertJ that it would be good to have many different ships, small, big, long, short, you know what I mean:)

At first thanks for your ideas!
I have to say that I already plan to use more and of cause different types of ships!
I am still working on the composition and the perspektive of the image.
The "Rain" idea is really more dramatic but it is difficult to combine it with my "Broken Moon" concept. And cause I want to show some ship very closely the ships have to flight to the viewer and to the right.
Maybe some more distant asteriods hit the moon parallel to the ones hit the planet. Maybe thats the moon breaks...
The colorcontrast and the many little and even bigger impacts on the planet will be realized in the final pic as well as in my final concept art.

This concept shows the planed areas of the final picture.
The RED area is tobe the asteroids zone. There you will see lots of rocks falling and hiting the surface.
The GREEN pass is the flight pass of the space ships escaping the planet.
You can see, that there is a contrast between the straight pass of the asteroids and the curved pass of the ships. I think this underlines the dramatic of the idea.

It's not easy to find time to work on the challenge cause some "real" jobs I've got to do...
(For example: I have to build a german chocolate santa character and animate him...)
I am working on my final concept sketch. But for that I need to find the right ship design. My concepts showed a long thin tranportion ship without looking to be able to land for example. My goal is that everyone should see that this ship has this function, can do this and looks like this because it has this duty.
I want to have 2 different engines for movement. First an anti gravitation engine for starting and landing from the surface of a planet. Second is a big ion thruster for interstellar travelling working like a big turbine with accelerated ions.
I also decided to have a hardware universe or hardware civilation. No engergy shield or beam weapons. Shields are built of metall like titan or tungsten. The weapons are missiles, torpedos and intelligent bullets spit out of rotating highspeed guns. Thats why I want to have a special look for my ships, rigid and tough but aerodynamic and a bit organic, too.
For me, the concept sketch is very important. And I don't want to start modelling or working in 3D till I have that detailed concept work. ( And I hope, You'll like that...)
