Title: Showreel (student)
Name: Kjell Emanuelsson
Country: Sweden
Software: After Effects, Maya, Photoshop

My showreel/webportfolio is finally finished!
I graduated SOFE this summer and been busy working
all summer, and so, here it is! Hope you like it!
More info:
The main project consists of three characters ("Hero", "Soldier" and "Soldier 2" aka "The Bastard"),
thought to be used in a short animation. I suggested a collaboration to a couple of friends so that we
could each focus on our own area of choice. Designs, textures (and project lead) was mine.
Daniel Law focused on rigging and animation (still in progress), and David Schumacher on modelling.
Backgrounds and stuff for the animation is still under production. (For my personal reel I also added the
characters I textured/designed from the "Light the torch" musicvideo, see my homepage for more details).

10 October 2004, 03:54 PM
Absolutely gorgeous!

Excellent Characters Design and Texturing!

10 October 2004, 04:01 PM
You've got some great texturework going on there. And the modelling is great as well.
Just top notch.
Maybe the editing could use a little more work.
If the characters are rigged, then it could be an idea to pose them in some interesting poses?

10 October 2004, 04:07 PM
Thanks for replys guys!

Flesser: Yeah, your absolutely right about the editing and the rigging. Perhaps I (and most) have seen so many reels like this that it becomes "obvious" to do them in

10 October 2004, 04:23 PM
Beautiful Kiel, Absolutely beautiful!

I have been waiting on this real for a while, and you defiantly didn’t let me down. Your texture skills are just so impressive.

I would really like to see those guys in motion… hope you and the team continues working on them…

Just hoping some one can see your talent and offer you a really nice job!

10 October 2004, 09:37 PM
Thanks guys! Very nice to see the positive remarks on textures (since that's my focus) !
Any dislikes? The music was really hard to pick, so I just went with something...Italian moviescores...I like ;)

Thell: Seems to be working now. The server is a bit unpredictable at times.

10 October 2004, 11:10 PM

10 October 2004, 12:13 AM

Words cannot describe how amazed I am right now.

Truly fantastic work. (I know I said words cannot describe it... but I am trying :))

10 October 2004, 07:52 AM
great job with the texture work. especially the leather on the hero attracts my eyes :applause: maybe a gradient or something to fill that gray background without taking to much focus of the characters/textures. anyhow good job :bounce:

Well... what Can I say? Amazing... really... just.. wow.

As said before... A litle more tight edeting. Don't let the musik stop before the visuals...
I would have slower rotation on the close-up on the characters in the beginning and just one revolution on the whole figure... other than that... nada.

I allways knew you´d go far. Let's see how far that is... get a haircut and get yer self a job! ;)

10 October 2004, 10:24 AM
Wow! Great response!
Henrik: Well, I´ve got the haircut. Now all I need is the job. ;>

10 October 2004, 11:16 AM

10 October 2004, 09:13 AM
Great textures as always Kiel, impressive work, it was nice to finally see your real. Keep up the great work. How many polys are the models on? nice of you to show the textures and bumps, interesting to see.

10 October 2004, 11:01 AM
Thank you all for the responses! I'm flattered!
Paat: Polycount is about 200k tri for the hero, double that for the "soldiers".

There is a backstory to the "soldiers" project. The short version:
The "soldier" creatures are "transformed mass" controlled by a crystalline entity inside them,
absorbing living creatures as well as dead objects, whatever it sees fit to use, and we get
a bone-metal/steel-flesh creature in different shapes and sizes! (It makes interesting textures at least ;)
The hero is the desillusioned hero-soldier of some big army. That kind of thing.

By the way, I used ambient-occlusion with very basic lighting for this project. No FG or anything.

I didn't put untextured models spinning in the reel, maybe next time? Perhaps it makes
it easier to see how the textures "work"?

Here are some untextured - textured comparisons:
(Untextured are just grabs from the viewport though...)

Hero (
Soldier (
Soldier2 (

Again, Thanks for all your replies!

these characters are just awsome, I am a big fan of comics, anime, and surrealism, and these hit every one perfect... super work and rendering.

01 January 2005, 10:35 AM
Holy Jeebus....... Superb work

01 January 2005, 10:48 PM
excellent texture and character design, especially, what I like is the Asian looking guy at the left, the outfit looks so cool, I think it will be nice if can see some more shadow on all of your characters, show the value between dark and light. Overall though, nice job.

02 February 2005, 03:04 PM
Great job, dude.

02 February 2005, 03:47 PM
