View Full Version : Show your technique (Drawing toy)

10-26-2004, 11:50 PM
I recall seeing this a while back on cgtalk, but I thought I'd bring it up again in relation to the daily sketch group.

Discovered this amazing thread over at

It's a flash program that allows you to record the way you sketch for others to see:

I was just wondering if there should be a sticky for this so we can post up our "mad skills" and see how these amazing speed techniques are being achieved. Obviously it's not robust, like openCanvas, but it's still a good display of form and technique.

EDIT: Here's a new version of the sketcher. Thanks chlywly!

10-26-2004, 11:56 PM
Here's an example of what I mean!
(excuse the crappiness!)

10-26-2004, 11:59 PM
Very cool, erilaz. I've been playing with it here at work. Very addicting as mentioned at conceptart. Uh oh. Here comes the boss!

10-27-2004, 01:05 AM
By the way, if you're wondering how it works, you have a set amount of ink (by meter at the top).
You send it to your own email address in order to get the link to post your stuff up.

10-27-2004, 01:18 AM
i did try it out, but... haven't gotten any emails yet for it. :( hotmail email can be sloooooow! >_<

10-27-2004, 03:27 AM
Once I get use to it I can waste a lot of time. Another thing for my girl to hate me for.
Thanks for the link.

10-27-2004, 05:24 AM
Yep, seen that one.

Give openCanvas1.1. a try. you get the same recording abilities: only longer, brushes, layers... and 4 people can draw at one time over the internet/network. Takes a bit of getting used to, Good Luck.

In most of my old posts, I have presented the wpe file link. Go back and check them out. I know a few others have also posted their's too.

Have fun

if you rar them, the size is about half.

As far as where to get it, I got it from a friend quite a while ago. I am sure it is still out there somewhere remember version 1.1 I have heard the new one isn't as usefull (don't know, havn't tried it $$$).

10-27-2004, 05:33 AM
Yeah, I know about openCanvas (in fact I mentioned it at the start of the thread!:p). What I'm saying is, this shows a quick sketcher without having to go downloading/uploading files.

Open Canvas is a great tool, and fantastic for learning sketching. What I'm trying to put across here is just little doodles that show off how people draw quickly and concisely. Open Canvas is great for that as well as showing off shading and paint skills.

Maybe we could do BOTH in here! openCanvas AND the flash sketcher, as a free-for-all open session.

10-27-2004, 07:09 AM
Obviously it's not robust, like openCanvas, but it's still a good display of form and technique.Whoops, I guess I should read a little more closely. Didn't mean to repeat anything, just wanted to share with the group.

10-27-2004, 11:05 AM
Painter has had that function for years, at least since version 3.

10-27-2004, 01:32 PM
I think that both this Flash tool and OpenCanvas/Painter are both powerful leanring tools to be shared. The benefit of OC and Painter is that you can get much more in-depth and see detailed rendering techniques. But the nice thing about the Flash program is that everyone is forced to use exactly the same ammount of ink. You can practice capturing your sketch in as little time and strokes as possible (and see how others do it)- which is great for thumbnails and gestures (which is what most finished drawings start out as)

And, like erilaz said, this Flash program can be used by anyone who has a Flash-enabled browser without installing/downloading anything.

10-27-2004, 07:53 PM
Really cool!

It isn't as practicle as a normal paint program, but good for learning.
I forgot about the ink and ran out... should have stopped earlier

Can't wait to see what the real pros here will come up with!

10-27-2004, 08:01 PM
hehe, funny stuff.
just gave a try at it:

10-27-2004, 08:36 PM
Quite addictive....

the boss came in so I had to rush this one.. LOL

here's mine (

10-28-2004, 12:18 AM
I needed several tries to get used to the little flash app.
Here's ( my lil sketch.

10-28-2004, 12:50 AM
Great work people! It's true the opencanvas and painter methods are even more useful for learning, so feel free to upload your work from them too!

But for now, sketch on! :D

(Thanks for the sticky, by the way)

10-28-2004, 06:05 AM
The end says it all...:

It brings out the artist in me...

10-28-2004, 10:35 AM
this share your technique idea is great but I really don't see how that flash thingy can be helpful in that.. It's fun for 30 secs but well.. I'm preferring OC here.

However sharing the OC wpe files and other techniques is a great idea! So bring them on :D

10-29-2004, 04:19 AM
Any sharable technique is good! Bring it ooooon!:D

10-29-2004, 09:42 AM

none of these links work for me... it just goes to the ge imagination launch page.. and i'm left with a pen to draw with... i cannot see your drawings..? :(
That's odd... it should launch a secondary page that loads the data. Maybe you have an overzealous pop-up blocker?

12-07-2004, 10:28 AM
hey it works fine... check here (

12-08-2004, 07:03 PM
Yep - some of these links are funky...the only ones that I can see the sketch for lately is Art2, all the others It loads a demo screen and goes right into a new drawing page for me to draw. It doesn't playback their sketch for folks like kirbz and LuisNCT :(

12-08-2004, 10:29 PM
Then maybe it's because they use the old version of the app.
Maybe it's no longer supported.

Heres my try ( at that gizmo, rather cool thingie.

Okaly dokaly, here ( it is.
I just had an urge to sew a man on his head when i saw that sketch.

12-16-2004, 01:14 AM
Hey eug3n, that's cool man :)

Maybe others could add a little character of their own too.
I noticed that my drawing lost a few lines, that's because I made that with the old version I guess...

here's a little sketch ( of a busdriver... all he needs now are passengers...
common guys fill up the bus :) (and leave some space for others too)

12-16-2004, 01:51 AM
Bwahaa! I made another one.
It's called "Mouse hater in hell ("

And I added a passenger to Art2's work.
Theres still ink for atleast 1 more passenger.
Okay, it's working now :) Click me (!

12-16-2004, 09:55 AM
That's one freaky mousehater man

Heehee, one passenger... but the link doesn't work :(
When the ink runs out can, others still add drawings? I wonder if that will erase the other drawings...

12-16-2004, 02:23 PM
Very funny eug3n
Yep next stop monsterville... :)

12-17-2004, 02:49 PM

Why won't this imagination-cubed site work for me anymore? I click on the link that says "enter," but a blank window pops up and nothing loads.

Is anyone else having the same problem/how do you fix it? I made my Internet Security system allow pop-ups on the site, but that doesn't work ...

12-23-2004, 01:26 AM
you need to have the latest flash player installed...that would be version7
that could help? dunno

12-28-2004, 10:47 AM
Hey guys, here's another fun app (
It only runs in IE and the latest flash player tho.

Little sketch (

12-29-2004, 05:26 PM
art2, i have watched all of your drawings and are amazed at your work...every one is unique and has a great story...even with crappy tools! Im going to add on to your bus(the original though...because for somereason if i try to add on to the other add on...the bus drivers head is deleted =X)

edit: Click Here (<---thats mine...there are fairies and a devil child(isnt there always one in every bus) its not good quality...i currently have two strikes against me(a new stylis and that being my first time using that program) neways hope u enjoy...

Tuzz you look classy in that turtleneck :D

01-26-2005, 06:27 PM
I suck at drawing :D

I really liked the bus driver one I saw a while ago, I find it amazing how some of you people draw just from your minds without a skeleton to build off of...

made in uterus: great orc! I have to agree, they are fun. I dont think you have anything to be ashamed of.... I have always enjoyed your DSG pix.

mybutterflyiris: well, someone likes horses :) and you surely know how to draw them well. That second one is just awesome.

Dang, missed most of the poker game this weekend eh?

With all the gnomes you guys let loose to run around here, I dont see how you forgot our friend the lawn gnome. Shame shame......

Wonderfull horse pic DMage. took me a sec to get the joke but once I did I couldnt stop laughing.

Thanks! I was just messing around...
And if you think there's a lot of gnomes now, you just wait till me and Mettoolman start posting our 'Gnomish!' Comics!!! Look for it soon in the COMICS! section!

I'm kinda busy this coming weekend, so i'll get to work on it (the comic) in 3 days or so...

u guys are indeed talented, i feel ashamed by posting mine :D

Like mustardwash said, it's really nice! Stick around here, and we might learn something too!!!

03-04-2005, 09:58 AM

Hey guys, im a half assed artist (i seem to think so) in need of life drawing or some type of traditional classes (never took em), so here's my try (i'm using a mouse by the way).

Tell me what you think! Oh and ps. im buying a graphire3 6x8 soon at the recommendation of jmboekestein (thanks for the motivation dude!). << How's that for a mouse? Composition of the beanie baby cat any good? I should have added seams! (forgot that!)

03-18-2005, 09:26 PM
Trying something different style and subject wise.
Flower (

that is very good for using a mouse PONG. Cant wait to see what you can do once you get your graphire3

03-20-2005, 08:04 AM
^ Thanks Mustardwash

Here is the SAME cat yet again, a SECOND TRY. Using mouse, probably 30 mins? Forgot!
Click HERE to view second attempt ( How are my mouse skills? Thanks for comments/crit anyone!!

Crit it!

03-20-2005, 12:41 PM

03-21-2005, 07:13 PM
Bah..that means it sucks work is soo bad compared to you guys...some of the work i've seen here using artpad is ingenious

Keep posting your work guys, i want to see more! And crit mine someone please!!?

03-21-2005, 08:57 PM
pongball: I think Art2's painful comment is more of a compliment than a "you suck" comment. :D
I wouldnt have the paitence to get a good quality drawing with my mouse anymore. (at one point I used too... not anymore)
I like your latest pic better, adding the little computer screen tabs was a neat idea.

03-21-2005, 09:26 PM
pongball: I think Art2's painful comment is more of a compliment than a "you suck" comment. :D

Yup, I can't imagine doing something in artpad with a mouse! :)

03-30-2005, 04:03 PM
Here's my first attempt at Artpad--"Moonlight". I was going for that impressionist feel using only the paint bucket. Now be gentle, this is my first painting ever...real or digital. :^) Hope you like it.

BTW, some of you guys are frickin' awesome with this thing. Loved just about every one that I saw.

03-31-2005, 02:32 PM

amazing talents in here :)

04-12-2005, 08:28 PM

Okay, I was bored. :P However, I consider that I have improved a lot in 2 years... lol you should see my first digital painting/drawing >_< lol

04-13-2005, 02:49 PM
Well, I figure it can't really hurt anything to go ahead and post mine :)

I do a fair bit of 3D stuff, but do very, very little 2D stuff (like this) so please take that into consideration... you'll also definitely want to move the slider over to fast, or you'll get bored really quick. I don't think it turned out half bad. I call it, "So a dog walks into a bar...."

04-13-2005, 06:29 PM
Ok, here's mine...

04-13-2005, 06:52 PM

Hey, nice app, and awesome sketches!

Here's my contribution :)

The app began to run really slow at the end, so I was kinda forced to quit :o!

04-25-2005, 04:47 PM

It just popped out of my mind =)

04-30-2005, 08:37 PM
whenever I tried to open a link I got "failed to load requested drawing.Start your own drawing instead" do you have an idea what the problem is?

06-02-2005, 03:35 PM
whenever I tried to open a link I got "failed to load requested drawing.Start your own drawing instead" do you have an idea what the problem is?

Yeah, you tried to open the old version...this is the new version, you can see results in the end of this thread.

07-08-2005, 02:45 AM (

here's mine!
I didnt bother to spend time on so dont expect something nice since it's so extremely boring to write, just my opinion.
However, Art2 props to you, you're good at what ya do.

07-08-2005, 06:57 AM
crejjM, thanks man. You did a great sketch!

I thought this thread was dead 'n buried... :)

07-08-2005, 11:45 PM
Hehe, well.. thanks, i guess! I didn't even try, that was far from the best I can but I got so bored, since it's so extremely boring to draw, atleast I think!:> However, it was dead'n'buried but I searched for artpad art at google and clicked around and so I got here :)
Would you mind post some more sketches you've done since I really enjoyed wathcing them, I love to see other people sketches, but I hate to draw my own :) Would appreciate if you could post some:)

Thanks in advance :)

03-13-2006, 12:46 PM
Where have all the doodles gone?

Just to keep this alive...
Fast forward it. This will take a while :D

have fun florian

Batman!? Is it you???

something copied...

03-13-2006, 01:30 PM
That last one was awesome. :D I really like the portrait one, though. The bold colors really worked well on that one.

Where have all the doodles gone?
I think the problem is that this subforum orders the threads based on their start date, not by last post. So this continually gets pushed farther and farther back. I'll PM Roberto and suggest moving it to the main 2D WIP forum.
