1 BACKGROUND: painted in photoshop
3 CITY: RENDER 4 Hs. aprox.
4 BALCONY: RENDER 3Hs 30min aprox.

A: 3 LAYERS MERGED: big ship, aditional clouds covering the ship and trails.
all painted in photoshop.
B: other ships.
c: CITY: extra dirt and color.

this are the most important layers, there are others like specular bloom, fx. turbines of the ships and fog.

Very nice sketch! I like these calm colours, but I feel lack of strong red colours. I don't know why, but I would see some firey/orange/red elements in this composition.

these are some designs of some decorations of the buildings and other structures, also some models of ships, I want to add a ghotic-futurist style to the civilization.
I am going to begin to model a type of gargoyle that is to the sides of the balcony.

Cool head. Reminds me of the Dark Crystal. I was surprised to see this look, I guess because I envisioned a human king. I'm glad you went for something more creative. NIce model too.

Great concept sketches.

In some of the drawings, the floor seems to resemble a chess board, was this intentional? It could possibly add to the theme of the piece if used in combination with the king.

What can I say, your models rock:buttrock: I can only advice to experiment more with the colors. I wouldn't give a one color to the building. For example give different colors for the roofs, for the sculptures, for the walls in the top part. And make this dirt more visible.

Very nice models !

Just a little crit though : a square base connecting to an hemisphere (the dome at the top) makes the whole building looks strange.

i may suggest you to work a bit on the mount.. it doesn't looks believable.. try to mix using mask more textures for rock surface.. as i can see your using two except mossy.. try to use three or for.. also upper part may be improved.. i think there is too much dirt..

Your buildings are very nice.
The composition test is an excellent taste of things to come.

At this point, assuming this is a test I have few crits to make but here they are :

The flat building directly on the right of the river is not fitting well with the others. I think it's the shape ( it could be more circular maybe or completely turn around the tower at its side).

The mountain with the temple (the rocks too rounded).

The greeblies for the city houses are ok (with appropriate texturing in due time).

I know it's just a test but these are my thinkings...

YES! This scene reminds me of the remake of the movie Dune. It definitely gives the feeling of an interplanetary civilization, though I'm not sure why. Super! (

Gerardo, I was attracted to your thread because of your latest image. Very captivating and beautiful, brings a lot of emotion from it.
However, simply by looking at it it's dificult to come up with the story. I don't have the time right now to read back to all your story development, but I got the part that the emperor or someone is contemplating the near destruction of the city. What are you planning on using to suggest the destruction?

Also, the planet you have in your sky (I believe it's a planet, yes?) You have it darker in between the clouds, when this would not be realistic. It also looks as though the planet is in front of the clouds.
What would normally happen is this. The planet is in space, miles away from this one. Therefor, #1, the clouds would be blocking portions of the planet.
#2, anything in space that is seen from within an atmosphere of a world will not be completeley visible, only it's lit portions will be visible in the sky.
a. So, only the lit portions of the cloud would show through (Anything black will take on whatevere color the atmosphere is, space is black for instance, it simply is not visible as an object, same would take affect on the black parts of an object in space scene from inside a planet.) There would be no dark spaces in between the clouds, all this would simply look like the atmosphere. Think of it this way, a black and white image of clouds with the layer blending option in photoshop "Lighten" applied to it. Everything black or dark would become transparant, white would be the only solid, any value below starts becoming transparant.
b. Also, it appears, from the shadow of the emperor that the light source/sun is coming almost directly from the right, a little bit forward right. This would suggest to me that this planet would only be lit up on it's right side, so it would create a crescent in the sky. Also, your layer of clouds furthest back closest to the horizon appear to have a light source coming from the top left, instead of the right side which you have made in this world. This is because, I'm assuming, that it is a photo of sort, so maybe just try flipping it horizontally so it looks like the light source is parallel to the rest of your image

it's all looking great and the modeling is superb and wonderful, good luck and take care!

looking now at your current render and your initial concept sketch id say the concept looked so much more alive. I loved that blinding light in the first. Gave a much grander scale and more visualy stunning image. That is not to say your current work is anything off par at all. Fantastic work.

Leho, take these words as sincere as possible. The point of these threads and the focus on community involvment is so we can offer critiques and advice we are compelled to say all for the greater purpose of making quality art. The artist can take or leave whatever he pleases without taking offense, everything is merely an opinion, not a fact. And I feel the artist has the right to hear every opinion that graces the mind of the viewer as well as respond to them him/herself. It is not necessary that you defend him because there were no offensive words spoken, merely advice.... sincere advice to illiminate any potential distraction the viewer could have while looking at his piece to draw his focus away from the overall image.
My point was that I don't think the fact that the world looked inside the clouds was intended. I believe that he intended for the planet to be in space and for us to see it as we would see a moon on our own earth during the day. It could be "extraterrestrial or smth," granted, but unless it was intended, and unless the artist wanted it that way, why would you "let it be"? And the "planetary 'slip'" is not cool, if it is in fact a slip. Anything that wasn't intended to go in the piece, or isn't achieving the effect the artist wanted to have is the entire point of these threads. It's so we, as the viewer, can analyze the artist's intentions and critique him throughout his process to see if he is achieving his intentions. If we "let be" those "slips" that you speak of, that would make these entire forum's intentions in vain. Granted, if Gerardo concluded that this is actually something he liked about the piece, he can make the choice to leave it in, it's his artwork and our words are merely opinionated and sincere advice (for the most part). But if 2 people can have the same opinion of something (such as myself and cgcrusty) then it's something that must be addressed because a hundred more could potentially have the same opinion and one of those could be a judge! So it's absolutely irresponsible and rediculous to just blow it off and "let be," (that's an insult on the opinion, not you leho) everything should be addressed and contemplated by the artist and I believe this artist will address and contemplate the issue on his own terms.

My theory on the whole deal is this. There is am Argentinian writer by the name of Jorge Luis Borges. He is a very philosophical writer who creates fantastic (mostly short) stories of things that do not exist. He takes stories from his own life as well and implants them into his stories. But even when he takes stories from real life, he edits them, takes things that simply are not believable (even if they are the truth) and makes them so the viewer can believe them without question. Gerardo can, like I said, speak for himself without any other help. But, leho, you've got to think. You could change the entire optics system of a world foreign to our eye, you could make them be able to see extreme details in the darkest of darks all the while being able to see details of each flame of the sun in the same view, but the viewer could not possibly see it as being convincing. The viewer would simply think that the artist had issues dealing with contrast and values. As with this, unless that planet is more visually blatantly placed inside the sky for a reason, the viewer (or at least some) is going to think that it was a mere issue of the artist instead of some fantastic phenomena that takes place in this world. And the deal with the lighting of the planet as well, there would have to be two light sources in this space to illuminate that much of the planet, but the sharp shadow of the emporer shows that there is only one strong one to the right.

Simply take comments as helpful advice Leho, your last comment wasn't very helpful to the artist or the community, it was a defensive argumentative statement directed towards comments that had no offensive properties. take this as sincere as possible.

Like I said before Gerardo, you have a great piece going on, hope I didn't start a topic foreign to the greater purpose of your piece

Looking nice.Large scene,interesting look.My only thoughts are that the buildings are like greebles,or real simple primitives.Like a sphere with an extruded few pieces.It seems there is no real detail,it's just plain boxes and very simple shapes and forms.Plus the character seems to be just a shadow,I cant really make it out.
Still the work looks good,from far,I just wish more forms were visible and clear,more details seen.Just seems to be off in that area,but still a nice piece of work.I'l reserve final judgement when more is done.I know that textures wil be important.Good luck,nice work.:)

wonderful! I'm amazed. And I would advice to play a bit with the lighting. I think that it would look better if this ship gave a huge shadow to the ground. For example a big part of these mountains would be in shadow. With this setup it shouldn't be. And with this shadow on the mountains, the effect of grand scale and grand event would be emphasized.

The image has a certain amount of "WOWS" already stick to it! :thumbsup:

I think if you added some tower on the incoming ship way behind it's nose that will be visible through some clouds covering the tower base and showing of on the top with some lights on it would fit to the image pretty well (Hope you understood what I said...:D that's why the say 1 image = 1K words!!)

Nice independence day feel. Just a feeling but the background has a lot more of a theatric feel then the foreground. I would almost enjoy the picture more with the bottom half ignored, it would make the large ship coming from the clouds the main focal point. Great job on the modeling though, very impressed.

I don't know if you can do this at this stage, but, you should widen the canvas horizontally this picture is screaming for the WIDESCREEN format, those columns the guy is leaning up against feel constricting, it might be too late in the game to make changes though, everytime i look at this the first thought i get ....wider. I think you can do this.

Hmm...arturro has a bit of a point, looks a bit like a helmet. But since you're already in the texturing phase, you might get away with just scaling it a bit. Somewhat unprofessional yes, but it might work. Really depends on where the ship will be seen, ya?

I was thinking this too.While I like your entry I think the texture choice is hurting the overall scenes look.The modeling is simple,extrudes of primitives etc,but effective.But the textures look like Monsitj mentioned monochrome.To me they look like "greyscale",but in this case "Bluescale".the textures dont work for me.Not that the scene is off,it's just not as good as it could be with more effective textures.It's taste thing,but my feelings are just that.
By the way I also think this will effect you,as most have forgotten this challenge rule on judging:

"25% of the voting - Community interaction scoring (how well each shortlisted challenger interacted with the community, gave information about their work and helped others".

Still you have a good piece of work,just pointing out som things that may help you get to that final 5.:)

hey gerardo, great work you did so far, i like it very much. i have got a bluish, icy picture with a guy and a cape in the front, too :)

regards your question with the ships... my opinion would be that you should add more 3dimensionality, drama and speed to them. they should head more to the target (the big ship?) - now some of them point in other directions.... and perhaps you could add one which flew by near to the camera (you know, where the tail-smoke has more perspective)...

and i agree with some others... work on the boots, give some elements some slight color variation (brown, red) and you're on the winning streak. if you finish like you began you can count on my vote...

Overall your composition looks great, but what would happen if you removed the upper ship on the left and flipped the ships on the right to the left side, as well as make them look like they're traveling into the distance more. Would this pull the viewers eye from left down and around, to finally focus on the distant ship? More of a question. :)

Your modeling looks great, and the attention to detail.....amazing. Still without color it makes me feel like you either didn't have time to add textures or........ Just needs something to add age and life to the scene, to take away from the completely steril environment.

Specular bloom is the glow we see that professional 3d artist put on the specular channel of the material to make it more believable especially when the lighting of the scene is at day as it is in your image. I hope this helps good luck and keep up the good work

La unica critica que tengo es sobre las naves que estan despegando desde la ciudad... se pierden con el fondo y no parecieran estar despegando o volando por decirlo de alguna manera! quizas con algun pequeño detalle se desprenderian del fondo...........pero es cuestion de gustos..

Ilnono: Gracias amigo compatriota, le voy a agregar a las naves una estela para que de la sensación de que estan despegando lo estube probando anoche rapidamente, y quedaba bueno gracias por el consejo, la maquina que uso es una p4 2.4c 512 mb ram video geforce fx5900 xt, a la hora del render espero como todos la imagen esta compuesta en varias partes en total son como 13 horas de render asi de dura es la vida del 3d argentino. un abrazo!! ( ahora un resumen en ingles)

If I have to post one critic I think the forground structure needs some color or texture add... the motifs are great but all looks verry plastic-like... maybe some dirt or tiny bump... I suppose you know what I mean....

Looking good, I agree that a little bit of color added to the foreground would help draw your eye around the image. Keep at it!

The sky is a little to bright, I think you should atleast make the upper sky a little darker, to add some contrast, the scene is very bright.

nice with the corrections you made it really looks amazing , but one final comment from me just put more detail in the clouds and that’s it your scene will win ,good luck:thumbsup:

Looking very good, lots of details to take in :)

The added depth cue to teh mountains helps but maybe a little on the city might help push the balcony forward? I just felt the left hand side blended with the city a little. It's pretty minor though, the image is complete as it is. Well done.
13 hours rendering eh? I'm dreading my final render time. Good luck.

Really, it's a very very great and great pic, is not a joke , this this i thinks, i m not a specialist of 3d i prefer the 2d ( i learn but it's so hard used the logiciel), but in all the pic of the 3d challenge, it's one of the best pic, the city, the sky, the characters, the general color and the fantastik lighting, all elemnts are beautifull, i like really this pic, she's fabulous, very great work i hope your will be one of the best at the end judging ( excuse me for my terrible english)

Wonderful! super! but one crit:) I think that those taking off dropships as well as the one in the air, near the mountain, should have a fron parts lower than back parts. I think that is the way they would take off and fly. But if you don't have too much time leave it as it is. I'm with ya, and wait for voting:)

Arturro: i make the change, i rotate a little de 2 ships of the right part, only a little, ( retouching in photoshop) it was not possible to make other render, the left ship I left it without changes, i think the ship take off vertically and one inclines a little to advance, thanks for the crit. men. This is an exceptional image , I really like it you did a great job. The only crit I would have is the city/foreground is a little too monotone in color. Unless of course this is what you were after.
