Latest Update: Texturing: textures (

some textures and updated model..

10 October 2004, 08:23 PM
this is the concept sketch
the pic describes a terrestrial attack to another civilization lost in the space,
when all resources exhausted on earth the mankind leaved in search for other planets to colonize. And this planet seems to be the right place with the right atmosphere. The natives outnumbers the humans but humans are a bit more advanced in tech. In the sketch (above) there is the terrestrial mothership that is unloading the attack ships and part of the alien landscape with some buildings, I also plan to put alien ships fighting with terrestrial ones.
again, sorry for the low quality sketch :)
while I like to work when everything is planned and sketched, when I've to create something of my design I start modeling with a no precise idea and I look at what borns..

10 October 2004, 10:54 PM (

started modeling some simple building for the alien city, trying to keep them simple because there will be a lot of these and also other bigger and more complex buildings..
what do you think of the design? any suggestion?

10 October 2004, 11:26 PM
that alien building looks very very cool! I really like it. keep it up!

10 October 2004, 11:36 PM
The building is very nice indeed.

10 October 2004, 07:24 PM (

I'm doing some bigger building and trying to differentiate them a bit keeping the same design

10 October 2004, 07:28 PM (

here are some towers that will be used in the city, I've included the first small house so you can see the scale of these.
C&C welcome!!

10 October 2004, 07:58 PM
Wow, nice buildings, like the tall ones, something like from LOTR

10 October 2004, 09:13 PM
oh man that buildings are absolutely cool. Nice desing on all types

10 October 2004, 10:51 PM
love the building design, very organic in their form just a thought the tendrals / pipework on some of them, is this something natural ie roots or vines feeding the building or gaining energy from somewher, maybe this could be a way of linking all of your city parts together each one connected to the next via this natural network.. can't wait to see the whole city.

Mr. Glass
10 October 2004, 11:14 PM
I like how organic they look, like they were grown out of the planet and reformed to fit what purpose they need.

10 October 2004, 11:18 PM
Matt: thanks! I intended the pipework like some energy distribution system, also the arcs on the top of the models are something like solar collectors/energy system..
at the bottom of each building there are small bevels, with those I was thinking to connect the entire city..but I think it is a huge amount of work that adds not so much to the pic..
I think I'll go for lots of building amassed toghether! hoping that my pc doesnt blow up..
I'm preparing psychologically to a 1 month render time, :D but by then the challenge will be already closed and I'll be off! :banghead:
I have to find a solution! :hmm:

MrGlass: thanks, actually I figure those models builded by the natives in a very malleable metal that is mined in the planet, anyway I've not choosen yet, it depends on what textures I'll put on them..and I have no idea..but since there will be lots of them I think I'll use procedurals the most.

10 October 2004, 01:16 AM (

another variation for the small house.

10 October 2004, 01:31 PM
wow!! Very cool design oblivionblack!!
Its simple (few poligons) and very well done!!
Youre doing a lot of variations, great.
good luck for you man!! Im watching

10 October 2004, 01:47 PM
Nice design there. Keep it up! What are your thoughts on coloring them? They seem rather organic (actually I imagine them with a color scheme similar to your avatar's!!):)

10 October 2004, 07:54 PM
thanks for the comments!! :bounce:
terraarc: I dont have a clear idea about that..probably I will use some "neutral" color scheme and add some other color with lights.

10 October 2004, 07:58 PM (

still adding variation to the buildings,
I think now it's enough.. at least for the small houses. Maybe I'll so some other bigger building.

10 October 2004, 08:46 PM (

started compositing the city and doing some texturing tests.
C&C welcome!!

10 October 2004, 07:14 AM
Wow, I really like your city approach. It is very different and alien in concept and is very original.

I look forward to your progress!

10 October 2004, 07:22 AM
It looks really dense and full of life

One suggestion is to diferentiate each building's color to give more depth and variation to the whole city. Also I think you should add some more building types.

Keep up the good work!

10 October 2004, 07:25 AM
wow, it's looking great so far!
how did u do the lights - textures?

10 October 2004, 05:10 PM
thanks guys!! :D
still working on the city I'll post an update in a few hours..
versiden: texturing is procedural atm and the lights are just luminous polygons!

10 October 2004, 06:06 PM
WOW! You've got a really cool modelling style! I really like that organic look (just like the other 'replieants' ;) )! That lights in that last render make it look really big and detailed! Go on! & Good luck! :)

Greetz, Gijs

10 October 2004, 06:12 PM
The city is coming along really nice with a lot of detail , i support the opinions about the depth in the scene and more types of buildings .

Nice progress , keep rockin :buttrock:

10 October 2004, 08:34 PM (

this is the airport of the alien city, the alien fighters will take off from here.

Mr. Glass
10 October 2004, 10:50 PM
That composite look cool. So are you planning on a night or day scene?

10 October 2004, 10:52 PM
kick @ss city, I would also like to know if this will be a day or night scene. I think a night scene would fit it perfect. Having all the city lit, would look great. Either way awsome job so far!:buttrock:

10 October 2004, 12:12 AM
thanks!
I think I'll go for a dimly lit scene, like light coming from a nebula or from a big moon..mostly a nightly environment

10 October 2004, 12:15 AM (

working on the cityscape..

10 October 2004, 12:24 AM
The city is looking very good indeed. I think the metallic look really shines in more ways than one. It looks (in the best possible way) like a cluttered pile of Christmas decorations. One thing though - the tall tower without any decoration in the middle - it reminds me a little too much of a certain male bodily organ - you might want to be careful where you use that one.

The tentacled building is great - very different look.

10 October 2004, 12:29 AM
looks good...
ur continuously differentiating the buildings (so they dont all look duplicated) so yeah, keep up the great work; looks like its gonna be a promising image--I hope that some DOF or something is added eventually, its rather busy on the eyes at the moment. :) ...but still nice.

10 October 2004, 12:37 AM
must take a while to render

hm, i think some redish lighting now and then would give some more variance.

10 October 2004, 01:50 AM
just wow, THAT is alien city, I like the highways !

Mr. Glass
10 October 2004, 02:16 AM
This last comp lends itself to an underwater theme. It reminds me of the Abyss. It'd be cool if you could rig up those streaming/road? lights with some Radiosity. It'd add an extra umpff to the buildings. Or for an easier solution to what I just mentioned, you could add some omni's with some falloff. Still looking good though , keep'em comin.

10 October 2004, 08:28 AM
Dude, the city looks great!
I suggest that you add an atmospherik glow or something like that @ the horizon and maybe a starfield or so :)
Great job!

10 October 2004, 09:27 AM
Totally awesome - that kicks some serious ass.

I really like the lights (be they faked by textured or real??), and the detail put into all the buildings.

Not quite sure where you're going with this one, but I'm sure whereever it is it'll be cool.

It gives me the impression of an underwater city, I don't know quite why, but it does - odd.

10 October 2004, 07:08 PM
Very nice work on the city so far!

I think a little bit of a depth-fog effect would help give definition to the size of the city.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing how this develops.

10 October 2004, 07:35 PM
thanks guys!! :D
I'll surely add some fog to the pic, also there will be some explosion here and there with lighting change.I dont know about the underwater look  I think that impression will go away as soon as I develop a bit of the sky

10 October 2004, 07:43 PM (

I've worked on the texturing, changed some lighting near the highways and near the energy plant, I also tried to broke the repetition of the buildings
how it looks now?

10 October 2004, 07:51 PM
Giorgio, the detail in your scene is amazing, and I'm just blown away by the complexity of the lighting. Any chance you could post a screen grab of how you've got the lights positioned?

10 October 2004, 07:53 PM
You are progressing at a good rate. Your alien city is begining to take nice shape. Might I suggest you add floating buildings that have a tether so they wont flow into outer space?

10 October 2004, 08:22 PM
yaroslav: sure you can suggest, very cool idea I've to think to it!! although I need room for the air battle, maybe some floating building could confuse a bit..but I'll give a try!

nuclearman: no lights positioned, all the lighting you are referring to is obtained by using luminous polygons :p

10 October 2004, 08:52 PM
wow veery nice one keep on going

10 October 2004, 11:24 PM
Nice City there bro!

10 October 2004, 11:31 PM
that's awsom

i have a question :) .

how could you manage to but all this buldings in the viewport ??

or is there anyway to do it with a normal pc (desktop). i know my question is silly but i need to know.

10 October 2004, 12:12 AM
the city is perfect Giorgio you can feel the life in there , you achieved a nice attention to detail in there. Keep rockin man and thanks for the support in my entrie.

10 October 2004, 08:34 AM
Looking sweeter by the minute.

The lighting looks really cool, and I can't believe that these buildings aren't even the main focus of your piece (I'm assuming the space battle is your main focus).

These images blow me away.

10 October 2004, 11:07 AM
thanks guys!! without your comments I would surrender much sooner!
stevetwist: the city has a important role indeed, the space battle would be nothing without it! :)
Aljoker: the buildings are low polygons unsubpatched, you can manage them with a single desktop pc (considering the actual standards I've a rather poor one: 1ghz 512 RAM and a useless ati rage that have loads of problems with lightwave and goes slow as hell) it takes 2,5 minutes for a render without antialiasing so it's still fine.
you can manage to have lots of building by using hyerarchies, parent say 10 builds to a null, then clone the hyerarchy, then parent the nulls to other ones and go up by cloning 10, 20, 40,80,160 buildings etc I'll post a layout grab this evening.

10 October 2004, 01:08 PM
thanks oblivionblack

you are great

i am waiting to see the rest of the good job

10 October 2004, 01:20 PM
oblivion this is looking great ... the buildings caught my eye a few days ago .. loved the architecture ya got .. but now... wow-o-zee really cool :bounce:

10 October 2004, 07:02 PM
Interesting - it doesn't look like groups of buildings have been duplicated, it looked more random - just goes to show, when presented with loads of detail, patterns are generally hard to point out - especially if a few main buildings break them up.

Very good work - your city is AWESOME!

10 October 2004, 08:59 PM (

started blowing up things a bit! :p
I've changed the lighting with something darker so the lighting is mainly from the explosions.
all the evening just to do the volumetrics!!but I'm quite satisfied of the results. not sure about the foreground looks strange. gotta change it..

10 October 2004, 09:46 PM
looking real nice oblivion. At first I didn't think those were explosions, I thought they were just bright buildings like the green one. I guess i'll be more obvious when you start droping the rest of your objects in there.

10 October 2004, 11:25 PM
Awesome. Love the detail. Explosions look cool too!

10 October 2004, 11:28 PM
wow this is looking awsome, now it might be a bit early to say this and have relavence but at its current stage then green building seems a lil to bright it kinda makes itself the focal point of the image.

10 October 2004, 11:38 PM
youve got some serious skill.
-any sky traffic coming?
ie ships and other small craft whatevers.

10 October 2004, 11:44 PM
nrek is onto something, your city is bieng destroyed but you might not notice cause the whole town is lit up. when you look at a city from far
(at night)
most of the time the "downtown" will be brighter than the rest of the city
if you were to simply dim thos lights closer to the outside of the scene.
more focus will be pointed towards the destruction-event.

i talk alot hope not to bug you.
heres mine-not much its a start.

10 October 2004, 11:46 PM
WoW! every time I visit this thread look better and better!
the green domo is cool! reminds me the disney ball (I dont remember the name)!
I agret about the explosions, dosent look like explosions at first sight.

10 October 2004, 12:52 AM
This is going to be great.

10 October 2004, 10:05 AM
What I like the most is the ambition and guts to go for such a plan..................And as of now it looks like your handling the task at hand very well Giorgio..........The organic appearance as others have mentioned certanly is there. The scale and scope are interesting and this shows a lot of promise, and thus far you seem to have a good handle on it.Your efforts are paying off,and I like what I see very much.I'll be watching for more,a nice start for sure.........:arteest:

10 October 2004, 11:55 AM
You're fast dude!!

I'm liking it so far!!

10 October 2004, 03:21 PM
thanks so much for your support!! you guys rock!! :D

nrek: I kinda agree about the building..let's see if it's getting too much attention after adding something else, there will be plenty of focal points so I think it shouldnt disturb too much.
jason: sure there will be ships! alien ones fighting with terrestrials.
good point about the lights, I'll see how it looks by dimming them near the borders of the city. and bug at all!!without your suggestions I couldnt improve it!
virtuoso: thanks a lot!! I was rather scared of the "ambition" at first, I feared that I couldnt handle a such complex scene in terms of rendering time and polygons..instead I'm not getting so huge render times and this permits me to continue working pretty well.
I had to forget those smooth subpatched objects though, but it seems from distance it cannot be seen too much.

10 October 2004, 06:21 PM (

adding some it looks?

10 October 2004, 08:29 PM
Wow, ton of details !
Maybe someone had already said it, but i think this is really hard to read the image with such an amount of details. it's hard to focus on a part of the scene.
By the way, this is a WIP, and i'll waiting for updates. Good work :)

10 October 2004, 05:40 AM
thats really impressive.
i like the "sounds" coming from the imagery.
very fluid and lifelike
heres where ive stuck myself...

10 October 2004, 05:48 AM
Nice update Giorgio , the city looks great with the fire . Keep the good work:thumbsup:

10 October 2004, 03:49 PM (

some tweakings and bigger render!

10 October 2004, 05:09 PM
Whoa, that's quite a work!

I like the tons of details and the organic feel of the whole city.

My thumb:thumbsup: is up.

10 October 2004, 05:28 PM
Nice atmosfere Giorgio
What do you prepare for the background?

11 November 2004, 12:02 AM
What do you prepare for the background?

I dont know yet, I'm experimenting with some fog at the moment.
surely, on top as the concept secribes, there will be the mothership emerging from a cloudy sky, at least that is my intention..everything is possible, maybe I'll put some distant planet too.

11 November 2004, 12:27 AM
keep it coming giorgio,as I mentioned beforemthe ambition is wonderful, and thus far your keeping up with it work wise.Nice going, keep it coming.....:arteest:

11 November 2004, 02:01 AM
what can I say, looks awesome!
I bet that with the sky would be more amazing!!

keep updating!

11 November 2004, 08:54 AM
WOW! Awsome city mate! Nice touch on the smoke and fire! Keep it up, heading for the sky! (metaphorically and literally)

11 November 2004, 04:20 PM (

this is the light setup I'll use the the final image, I've added some contrast by using a bluish light on the foreground, I've also added some reddish fog that gives a more dramatic look. as always critics welcome!

11 November 2004, 06:55 PM
WOW the evolution of your work is... impressive!! Can't wait to see the next step. Keep it up

11 November 2004, 07:14 PM
looking damn sweet.

I love the colours, they are so rich and full - I can't wait to see the rest of this image come about.

11 November 2004, 07:15 PM
holy shhh*!

I cant wait too this picture on high res! the lighting is great! I love the gradient of the scene.

how about a red sky with big black red clouds?

11 November 2004, 10:56 PM
Oh man it looks gorgeous! i love this city... Just one question you intend on putting something above it right?(i know kinda silly question). Well keep it up! :bounce:

11 November 2004, 11:37 PM
borro: yeah plenty of ships I think!!
thanks to all for your nice comments and suggestions! I didn't knew that joining a challenge was so funny! :D
I think the city is pretty much finished, maybe I'll modify something at the end if composition does not look right but everything is there for the moment..

so next step is to start modeling some ship! :bounce:

11 November 2004, 04:23 PM
Nice city . Mybe alitlle too much light

My thread :

11 November 2004, 04:31 PM
Looks amazing so far. I can't believe how much work you've completed on your city already. I especially like the look of the fires in the city, they look just right.

11 November 2004, 10:32 PM (

started modelling the mothership

11 November 2004, 10:46 PM
You keep bringing it strong giorgio, looking sleek and tough, nice going.Like your work flow and overall work eye candy wise.keep it up,nicely done.:arteest:

11 November 2004, 11:52 PM
Very cool modeling on the mother!

Keep it up, so far looks great.

11 November 2004, 12:07 AM
Very cool design!! I would like to see a test render dude;) !!

11 November 2004, 04:27 AM
OMG!.... hangon I will just pick myself off the ground. So much to look at.... FANTASTIC! :applause:

11 November 2004, 08:15 AM
Again great job on the mother ship! Loos cool, but where are the weapons? Wonna see some killing FX :D

11 November 2004, 08:24 AM
Very cool model - rock on.

11 November 2004, 08:49 AM
 Man! i definitly love your designs

11 November 2004, 12:43 PM (

this is a test render done to see how the ship will be on the final scene

11 November 2004, 03:26 PM
this is one of my favorite entries, everything looks so good and colorful, I really like your style, and composition. That mothership rocks :buttrock: !!!

11 November 2004, 10:48 PM
That blue lighting on the ship is sweet!

Your work is so awesome! I can't wait to see these pieces come together. The detail in your work is outstanding!

I'm really looking forward to seeing the ship fully textured - but as it stands it still kicks ass!

11 November 2004, 10:51 PM
this ship remind me of "matrix" style! :)
nice... good work

11 November 2004, 09:18 AM
Nice design on the Sship. I would suggest a more perspective view for the final composition. Keep it up!:)

11 November 2004, 12:00 PM
Hey nice test render dude, thx!!:applause:

11 November 2004, 04:13 PM
WOW what a response!! :D :buttrock:
I wasn't receiving notifications by email and I've been busy for a while..but I'll restart working at the ships asap!
thanks for your comments!

11 November 2004, 10:40 PM (

started texturing the ship after some modelling changes, and I'm doing some lighting tests.

11 November 2004, 10:56 PM
Impressive coloring on the ship. This is going to be a great work.

11 November 2004, 11:25 PM
Excellent job on the texturing! Engine FX are really cool! Keep it up!

11 November 2004, 06:13 AM
Wow, how did you did those engine glows? Its not a volume lite is it? :) Anyways, those look great, same as textures!

11 November 2004, 09:51 AM
Looks really massive with those lights added! (Lighting kind of reminds me Spielberg's "Close Encounters"):thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 04:56 PM
aarrrgh!!! Looks SO GOOD. The ligthting is superb! plz post a picture with the city too !

11 November 2004, 07:15 PM
Wow, superb work!

Keep it up.

11 November 2004, 07:41 PM
Looks so sweet! And I too would love to know how you did the engine glows.

11 November 2004, 07:41 PM
Those Engine fx looks fantastic man , can you explain how did you did that , looks extremely well .

Keep rockin:buttrock:

11 November 2004, 08:41 PM
Really good stuff. The ship reminds of the last matrix movie ships.I quess everything can remind us of something though.I wish you could get a couple closer more detailed looks at the buildings too,now they could almost be a mushroom patch, just cant see any details. It looks really cool and all,I just want some more closeups.i really like your entry man.

11 November 2004, 09:18 PM
thanks a lot guys!!
the engine fx are made with volumetric lights. there are three volumetric (distant) lights for each engine can see the various beams intensity. Then I've applied a (turbolence like) procedural texture and added a gradient to change the colors of the pattern..each light has the same pattern. that's all! :)
Steveyola: thanks!the ship has a bit of matrix style, but it was unintentional :) I agree that you cannot see so much details on the buildings..but there really aren't many details to see..I did some close-ups but it doesnt look good..mainly because of the low polygon objects. I'll post something though!

11 November 2004, 10:01 PM (

I've started playing with the sky..more or less the idea is there but I'm not sure about this one..please critique it!! :)

11 November 2004, 11:13 PM
I love the lights on the ship! The sky has a little too much cloud coverage. I think it might add some depth if you had some clearings with a view of space, maybe a large moon in the background. Good work.

11 November 2004, 11:32 PM (

as promised this is a photoshop composite of the two renders..just to see how they look together!

11 November 2004, 01:31 AM
looking great so far, the clouds are bothering me tho, are you going for clouds covering the whole planet ala Matrix? if the ship is breaking the clouds then the whole is looking too much like a cookie cutter cut.

11 November 2004, 06:37 AM
Very nice, I still cant believe the detail. Just a thought the clouds where the engines are....maybe a swiling effect and as the ship comes through the clouds sweeping around the hull....airflow...:)

11 November 2004, 10:06 AM
Awsome pic, the scale is gigantic! As for the sky, it does look fairly motionless to be picky.. Swirls would look really good. It would also benefit from a subtle arc of cloud over the city to enhance the scale of the scene further as opposed to a flat layer of cloud.

But awsome.. truly awsome, looking forward to see this one finished! :bounce:

11 November 2004, 10:16 AM
WOW! Really impressing composition! The clouds are covering quite a large portion of the image. But I can see clearly now (not "that the clouds are gone", from song don't remember singer quite old one) smaller ships heading to the big one with lots of fume refractions from the engines...:bounce::bounce:

Impressing scene again

11 November 2004, 10:26 AM
Very, very nice! I like the city and the mothership. It's full of detail and the colors are amazing! But what's the mothership gonna do? Is it gonna destory the aliencity? Or is it a friendly ship? But why does it fly so low above the city? There's no landing place..

11 November 2004, 11:33 AM
Cool!

The compositing looks impressive, specially the scale of it. The sky is highly dramatic. Quite a catastrophe going on... I'm really impressed.

11 November 2004, 07:44 PM
The ship looks awesome - truley amazing modelling, texturing and lighting (as if we weren't already expecting that, from the truely amazing city!).

I do agree with the various comments about the cloud cover - it just doesn't do it for me. If the ship is supposed to be breaking up the clouds it wouldn't be, as SNoWs put so well, a "cookie cutter effect", it needs a bit more randomness.

Other than that, it's looking very cool. I am amazed at the speed of work - truely an inspiration.

11 November 2004, 08:14 PM (

I've changed the way I'm doing the I'm doing them with particles and wind effects (the previous render was done by using an object as particle source)I have more freedom with this way, and I'm going for a "swirling" if the force field/engines of the ship is making that turbolence on the clouds..

11 November 2004, 01:28 AM

I almost hear the sound of that engines!!!
the sky look awesome! :scream:

11 November 2004, 09:14 AM
Yeap, tha sky looks awesome! With particles it gives much better look as its a storm in there,

11 November 2004, 09:30 AM
The new sky looks better ;). Great job! keep it up!

11 November 2004, 09:39 PM (

some tweaks on the sky and I've added the volumetrics on the engines.

11 November 2004, 03:48 AM
Oh Yes! that looks great :applause: Look out the invaders are for your lives...hehe :)

11 November 2004, 07:53 AM
Looking sweet. The volumetrics really make the engines kick some serious a$$.

The clouds are looking much better- they seem more blurry, which means they're more realistic IMO.

Still think the shape of the hole needs refining though.

11 November 2004, 03:36 PM
This is one of the best entries in this challenge, hard to crit anything.

But there are some things, that, in my opinion, could work better;

The picture is very symetric. I like the green thing in the background though, it sort of breaks that. You could try to put in some more objects to do the same.
I think the fire should react to these big engines, pointing away from the mothership. This effect would help to sence the scale of the ship.
You mentioned "The Matrix"...The effect in reloaded, where Neo is doing the superman in the clouds, the clouds is swirling in spiral patterns. You also see that when big planes is flying through the clouds...You should work more with this effect in your clouds, would look awesome.

Great work anyway

a simple ship fighter, I'm keeping the dirty look for the textures..but not sure about the seems too much "classic"..although it shouldnt be seen by near.

11 November 2004, 01:29 AM
You're right, it does seem classic. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can take inspiration from great classics, so why not?

11 November 2004, 10:27 AM
If seen from a distance I think that ship will be fine - but if seen quite large I think it's textures are a little too bland.

However, seeming as the mother ship is quite small in the image, those ships should be tiny, right?

11 November 2004, 05:00 AM
This is AN SPACE OPERA you are not supposed to ROCK the place! :buttrock: :buttrock:

:applause: Cool job pal!

11 November 2004, 06:19 AM
Giorgio, maybe it's just the angle you used for the render of those fighter ships, but to my eyes they look an awful lot like the NASA space shuttle: same contour to the nose, similar look to the tail fin.

11 November 2004, 10:57 PM
thanks a lot for your feedback!! :bounce:
nuclearman: maybe you're right but as stevetwist guessed, they're going to be rather small so very little detail is of them will be visible.

11 November 2004, 11:53 PM (

started compositing the fighters and their route from the ship to the city

11 November 2004, 10:37 AM
Wow - the fighters look sweet that small in the piece, only comment is perhaps they need to be a little smaller?? I mean, compared to the size of the city below, and the size of the mother ship, they're looking a little too large.

Either that or they're meant to be closer to the camera, but the perspective is hard to make out.

Anyway, looking cool all the same.

11 November 2004, 01:00 PM
Cool improvements. I like how this is shaping itself off.

11 November 2004, 01:06 PM
Nice start to compositing. The main ship looks really dangerous and looks like it's coming straight towards the camera. Nice! Hope to see more soon!

11 November 2004, 09:56 PM
Oblivion, I think you accentuated lights too much in your last post... your excellent model losses too much detail, maybe try to light the ship just to "give shape" to its surface

sky would also look much better with other kind of clouds and a little gradient in horizon

I know is a very far point of view, but try to do something with the little ships, they are not much appeciated

Maybe textures are too much detailed for such a big distance from the point of view

anyway, it looks amazing!

11 November 2004, 10:03 PM
u are 3 steps in front of us all :)
btw i dont like what happend with ship... :(
this textures... i dont know i just dont like them :(

11 November 2004, 10:38 PM
thanks for your critiques guys!! very much appreciated!! :scream:
forget the previous render it was over-sharpened in postprocess and that's screwed the thing a bit. it was meant just as a compositing test (I mean the position of the ships on the pic)
plus I'm working without any shadow/ambient occlusion on the main ship to do this tests as to save time and this flattens the big ship a lot. a bit of ambient occlusion on the final pic will pop up all the lost details! :p
climax: what do you mean by: " do something with the little ships"? you intend with the shape of them?
anyway I'm going to upload another test with a bit different lighting.
again, any critique and comment is much appreciated!

the model is excellent, It is just that they seem too tiny as if they where not detailed, of course they are not supposed to call too much attention on the final compositing but maybe changing the color of the blue fire on them would make the difference

11 November 2004, 12:15 AM (

another test.. rather similar to the previous one..just some minor tweak.

11 November 2004, 12:33 AM
• tbut maybe changing the color of the blue fire on them would make the difference

ohh now I got it!! :) thanks!
the fact is that I'm planning to use a blue volumetric for the terrestrial ships and a green one for the alien's ships, (different combustibles gives different flame colors) so that the difference between the races is more stressed. anyway this is nothing definitive I still have to model some different fighters and bombers for the terrestrials as to differentiate them a bit. this could change the whole (ships) composition later!

11 November 2004, 01:56 AM
wow.. very impressive imagery Giorgio !!!
great work mate!
especially i like the city.. and clouds.. and ship too.. hehe.. i like it all.. :D
i can't see well because of small size of the picture but i may suggest you to work a bit on the ship texture.. it's too blured..
if there is an atmosphere on the planet you may add a thin wall/glass refraction effect for the engines to show turbulence of hot air.. you may add it in your 3D app or later in Photoshop
but these are not so important things.. improving ship texture is the most important i think..

keep great work mate and cheers!!

11 November 2004, 03:24 AM
This is simply amazing. The models, textures, lights, are great. Some suggestions - in case you need them - the ship looked better with the darker bottom, in the newer renders with the light it looks more in-game style. Also, the little ships are a bit distracting, there's no order to their placement, and lastly, Have you thought of putting a large building in the foreground to create multiple planes? Either way, great job and good luck.

11 November 2004, 08:46 AM
Ahhhh, the latest render looks even better than the one before it - when will it stop!

Truely awesome work! I can't wait to see the pieces come together - gonna kick some serious a$$.

11 November 2004, 09:40 PM
thanks so much!! :)
greentek: nice point about the heat-waves I definately have to work at that! :wip: thanks for stating this good point!
HieSpike: sure that I need suggestions! but the ships arent posed randomly, if you look they take off from the big ship's wings, then turn and go towards the least that was my intention! ;) also I'm not sure to understand "putting a large building in the foreground to create multiple planes" what you mean with multiple planes?

steve: you're one of my most assiduous readers!! thanks for following my thread with so much enthusiasm, this is really a great motivation for me! the same for markovicd,Doublecrash, terraarc and plaguelord! thanks a lot to all!

Well, I can only speak for myself - but, no problem - it's a pleasure to view your work anyway (As it's so damn awesome!).

11 November 2004, 11:09 AM
Really some nice art coming from this thread............It's coming along quite nicely.......You seem to be on target in all areas Giorgio, and I think this is going to be and "is" a very nice entry to follow.................Just keep going as you are, this will be one very nice creation/entry for to be proud of...............:arteest:

11 November 2004, 09:30 PM
The smaller ships give lots of action, so  for your last update.

11 November 2004, 10:46 AM
HOLY CRAP... well thats awsome dude... good to see a lightwaver kickin some butt

11 November 2004, 10:49 AM
Whoa cool mothership. I only just noticed the face that the ship has. Nice stuff...

11 November 2004, 09:15 PM (

a terrestrial bomber, I've kept a similar design of the fighter.

11 November 2004, 12:33 PM (

heya all sorry for the lack of updates..I've had some free time and I'm continuing the composition of the ships, with the newly released bomber :) there will be some alien crafts in the foreground trying to repulse the attackers

11 November 2004, 12:39 PM
Looks nice Giorgio.........Your scene sure will be of a grand scale......I think you should add more chaos to the ships positions, they seem too alligned........More chaotic, minor nit pick. All in all you are doing a very nice job here, and I like the progress each time.Keep at it strong,it's coming along real well...........:arteest:

11 November 2004, 12:52 PM
Nice update Giorgio!
Agreeon the points mentioned by Virtuoso and I'd say also that maybe lowering the thrust effect of the bombers would lighten up the composition...just a thought here!

Keep it up! (You surely are pretty close to completing the whole stuff and with tons of time for refinements!!)

11 November 2004, 01:03 PM
Very nice compositing the lighting on the ship is great
i really like that blue fire in the mothership

11 November 2004, 01:06 PM
hy Giorgio

just wanna say that you're doing fantastic work!

I really like it ho it's growing up :applause:

Only Crit, as Virtuoso said, maybe adding more chaos to the ships will improve the look of a high-motion-snapshot :)

keep that wunderfull stuff up man!

11 November 2004, 11:54 PM (

the alien craft, I've started modeling trying to do an hibrid between an helicopter, a plane and a spaceship..I came up with this design..but I might change something. critiques welcome!! :)

12 December 2004, 09:59 AM
Wonderful !!! Really love you models and the scene sound really amazing  congrats !

12 December 2004, 09:04 AM
These models are awesome, the scene is still looking great.

Keep up the amazing work.

12 December 2004, 07:10 PM
  Cool ship! looks like a bug, keep goin my friend! it looks great!

12 December 2004, 07:15 PM
Yeah, I agree with Climax, nice bug:thumbsup: it looks great. Your rendering test is also very good, how did you make the laser shots?

12 December 2004, 11:16 PM
thanks for your comments guys!!
the terran ships are attacking in formation, that's why they're so aligned, alien ones will be more free and caotic,
as for the model, I've changed it a bit with larger wings, I'll post an update soon..
aturro: thanks, the lasers are just a transparent plane with a luminous texture applied..a quick solution! :p

12 December 2004, 11:31 PM (

some textures and updated model..

12 December 2004, 02:16 AM
The model of the craft is really cool... it has something of an insect, I like it a lot.

12 December 2004, 02:39 AM
Impressive! Only thing, I would decrease bump level, it seems to noisy and it may increase rendering time if it will appear too small in the scene  but it is just an oppinion

12 December 2004, 09:39 AM
You're moving great oblivionblack!
The small S-Ship looks good and the texturing gives more mystery to it!

Waiting for updates...:wavey:

01 January 2005, 06:29 PM
Well come back Giorgio, I hope you come ready for some great updates! I wish you the best in this new year, may the force be with you in this last challenge days :scream:

01 January 2005, 06:30 PM
heya guys!! long time I do not update this thread, the "problem" is that I'm going to move to london soon so I'll not have the time to finish least for some months
I really hope to find some cool job there  I'm tired of how things go here..
anyway thanks so much to everyone for the support in this thread, that's really appreciated!! and I wish you a wonderful new year!
