this is the concept sketch
the pic describes a terrestrial attack to another civilization lost in the space,
when all resources exhausted on earth the mankind leaved in search for other planets to colonize. And this planet seems to be the right place with the right atmosphere.The natives outnumbers the humans but humans are a bit more advanced in tech. In the sketch (above) there is the terrestrial mothership that is unloading the attack ships and part of the alien landscape with some buildings, I also plan to put alien ships fighting with terrestrial ones.
again, sorry for the low quality sketch :)
while I like to work when everything is planned and sketched, when I've to create something of my design I start modeling with a no precise idea and I look at what borns..

started modeling some simple building for the alien city, trying to keep them simple because there will be a lot of these and also other bigger and more complex buildings..
what do you think of the design? any suggestion?

love the building design, very organic in their form just a thought the tendrals / pipework on some of them, is this something natural ie roots or vines feeding the building or gaining energy from somewher, maybe this could be a way of linking all of your city parts together each one connected to the next via this natural network.. can't wait to see the whole city.

Matt: thanks! I intended the pipework like some energy distribution system, also the arcs on the top of the models are something like solar collectors/energy system..
at the bottom of each building there are small bevels, with those I was thinking to connect the entire city..but I think it is a huge amount of work that adds not so much to the pic..
I think I'll go for lots of building amassed toghether! hoping that my pc doesnt blow up..

I'm preparing psychologically to a 1 month render time, :D but by then the challenge will be already closed and I'll be off! :banghead:
I have to find a solution! :hmm:

MrGlass: thanks, actually I figure those models builded by the natives in a very malleable metal that is mined in the planet, anyway I've not choosen yet, it depends on what textures I'll put on them..and I have no idea..but since there will be lots of them I think I'll use procedurals the most.

Nice design there. Keep it up! What are your thoughts on coloring them? They seem rather organic (actually I imagine them with a color scheme similar to your avatar's!!):)

It looks really dense and full of life :thumbsup:

One suggestion is to diferentiate each building's color to give more depth and variation to the whole city. Also I think you should add some more building types.

The city is looking very good indeed. I think the metallic look really shines in more ways than one. It looks (in the best possible way) like a cluttered pile of Christmas decorations. One thing though - the tall tower without any decoration in the middle - it reminds me a little too much of a certain male bodily organ - you might want to be careful where you use that one.

The tentacled building is great - very different look.

ur continuously differentiating the buildings (so they dont all look duplicated) so yeah, keep up the great work; looks like its gonna be a promising image--I hope that some DOF or something is added eventually, its rather busy on the eyes at the moment. :) ...but still nice.

This last comp lends itself to an underwater theme. It reminds me of the Abyss. It'd be cool if you could rig up those streaming/road? lights with some Radiosity. It'd add an extra umpff to the buildings. Or for an easier solution to what I just mentioned, you could add some omni's with some falloff. Still looking good though :thumbsup:, keep'em comin.

I suggest that you add an atmospherik glow or something like that @ the horizon and maybe a starfield or so :)

Totally awesome - that kicks some serious ass.

I really like the lights (be they faked by textured or real??), and the detail put into all the buildings.

Not quite sure where you're going with this one, but I'm sure whereever it is it'll be cool.

It gives me the impression of an underwater city, I don't know quite why, but it does - odd.

I think a little bit of a depth-fog effect would help give definition to the size of the city.

I'll surely add some fog to the pic, also there will be some explosion here and there with lighting change.I dont know about the underwater look :shrug: I think that impression will go away as soon as I develop a bit of the sky

I've worked on the texturing, changed some lighting near the highways and near the energy plant, I also tried to broke the repetition of the buildings

You are progressing at a good rate. Your alien city is begining to take nice shape. Might I suggest you add floating buildings that have a tether so they wont flow into outer space?

Looking sweeter by the minute.

The lighting looks really cool, and I can't believe that these buildings aren't even the main focus of your piece (I'm assuming the space battle is your main focus).

stevetwist: the city has a important role indeed, the space battle would be nothing without it! :)
Aljoker: the buildings are low polygons unsubpatched, you can manage them with a single desktop pc (considering the actual standards I've a rather poor one: 1ghz 512 RAM and a useless ati rage that have loads of problems with lightwave and goes slow as hell) it takes 2,5 minutes for a render without antialiasing so it's still fine.
you can manage to have lots of building by using hyerarchies, parent say 10 builds to a null, then clone the hyerarchy, then parent the nulls to other ones and go up by cloning 10, 20, 40,80,160 buildings etc I'll post a layout grab this evening. :thumbsup:

Interesting - it doesn't look like groups of buildings have been duplicated, it looked more random - just goes to show, when presented with loads of detail, patterns are generally hard to point out - especially if a few main buildings break them up.

started blowing up things a bit! :p
I've changed the lighting with something darker so the lighting is mainly from the explosions.
all the evening just to do the volumetrics!!but I'm quite satisfied of the results. not sure about the foreground fire..it looks strange. gotta change it..

nrek is onto something, your city is bieng destroyed but you might not notice cause the whole town is lit up. when you look at a city from far
(at night)
most of the time the "downtown" will be brighter than the rest of the city
if you were to simply dim thos lights closer to the outside of the scene.
more focus will be pointed towards the destruction-event.

nrek: I kinda agree about the building..let's see if it's getting too much attention after adding something else,there will be plenty of focal points so I think it shouldnt disturb too much.

good point about the lights, I'll see how it looks by dimming them near the borders of the city. and oh..no bug at all!!without your suggestions I couldnt improve it!
virtuoso: thanks a lot!! I was rather scared of the "ambition" at first, I feared that I couldnt handle a such complex scene in terms of rendering time and polygons..instead I'm not getting so huge render times and this permits me to continue working pretty well.
I had to forget those smooth subpatched objects though, but it seems from distance it cannot be seen too much.

Maybe someone had already said it, but i think this is really hard to read the image with such an amount of details. it's hard to focus on a part of the scene.

I dont know yet, I'm experimenting with some fog at the moment.
surely, on top as the concept secribes, there will be the mothership emerging from a cloudy sky, at least that is my intention..everything is possible, maybe I'll put some distant planet too. :drool:

this is the light setup I'll use the the final image, I've added some contrast by using a bluish light on the foreground, I've also added some reddish fog that gives a more dramatic look. as always critics welcome!

I think the city is pretty much finished,maybe I'll modify something at the end if composition does not look right but everything is there for the moment..

Really good stuff.The ship reminds of the last matrix movie ships.I quess everything can remind us of something though.I wish you could get a couple closer more detailed looks at the buildings too,now they could almost be a mushroom patch,just cant see any details.It looks really cool and all,I just want some more closeups.i really like your entry man.:thumbsup:

the engine fx are made with volumetric lights. there are three volumetric (distant) lights for each engine fx...you can see the various beams intensity. Then I've applied a (turbolence like) procedural texture and added a gradient to change the colors of the pattern..each light has the same pattern. that's all! :)
Steveyola: thanks!the ship has a bit of matrix style, but it was unintentional :) I agree that you cannot see so much details on the buildings..but there really aren't many details to see..I did some close-ups but it doesnt look good..mainly because of the low polygon objects. I'll post something though!

I've started playing with the sky..more or less the idea is there but I'm not sure about this one..please critique it!! :)

I love the lights on the ship! The sky has a little too much cloud coverage. I think it might add some depth if you had some clearings with a view of space, maybe a large moon in the background. Good work.

looking great so far, the clouds are bothering me tho, are you going for clouds covering the whole planet ala Matrix? if the ship is breaking the clouds then the whole is looking too much like a cookie cutter cut.

Very nice, I still cant believe the detail. Just a thought the clouds where the engines are....maybe a swiling effect and as the ship comes through the clouds sweeping around the hull....airflow...:)

Awsome pic, the scale is gigantic! As for the sky, it does look fairly motionless to be picky.. Swirls would look really good. It would also benefit from a subtle arc of cloud over the city to enhance the scale of the scene further as opposed to a flat layer of cloud. :shrug:


But awsome.. truly awsome, looking forward to see this one finished! :bounce:

WOW! Really impressing composition! The clouds are covering quite a large portion of the image. But I can see clearly now (not "that the clouds are gone", from song don't remember singer quite old one) smaller ships heading to the big one with lots of fume refractions from the engines...:bounce::bounce:

Very, very nice! I like the city and the mothership. It's full of detail and the colors are amazing! But what's the mothership gonna do? Is it gonna destory the aliencity? Or is it a friendly ship? But why does it fly so low above the city? There's no landing place..

The ship looks awesome - truley amazing modelling, texturing and lighting (as if we weren't already expecting that, from the truely amazing city!).

I do agree with the various comments about the cloud cover - it just doesn't do it for me. If the ship is supposed to be breaking up the clouds it wouldn't be, as SNoWs put so well, a "cookie cutter effect", it needs a bit more randomness.

Other than that, it's looking very cool. I am amazed at the speed of work - truely an inspiration.

I've changed the way I'm doing the volumetrics..now I'm doing them with particles and wind effects (the previous render was done by using an object as particle source)I have more freedom with this way, and I'm going for a "swirling" look..like if the force field/engines of the ship is making that turbolence on the clouds..

Looking sweet. The volumetrics really make the engines kick some serious a$$.

The clouds are looking much better- they seem more blurry, which means they're more realistic IMO.

Still think the shape of the hole needs refining though.

This is one of the best entries in this challenge, hard to crit anything.

But there are some things, that, in my opinion, could work better;

The picture is very symetric. I like the green thing in the background though, it sort of breaks that. You could try to put in some more objects to do the same.
I think the fire should react to these big engines, pointing away from the mothership. This effect would help to sence the scale of the ship.
You mentioned "The Matrix"...The effect in reloaded, where Neo is doing the superman in the clouds, the clouds is swirling in spiral patterns. You also see that when big planes is flying through the clouds...You should work more with this effect in your clouds, would look awesome.

a simple ship fighter, I'm keeping the dirty look for the textures..but not sure about the model..it seems too much "classic"..although it shouldnt be seen by near.

If seen from a distance I think that ship will be fine - but if seen quite large I think it's textures are a little too bland.

However, seeming as the mother ship is quite small in the image, those ships should be tiny, right?

Giorgio, maybe it's just the angle you used for the render of those fighter ships, but to my eyes they look an awful lot like the NASA space shuttle: same contour to the nose, similar look to the tail fin.

Wow - the fighters look sweet that small in the piece, only comment is perhaps they need to be a little smaller?? I mean, compared to the size of the city below, and the size of the mother ship, they're looking a little too large.

Either that or they're meant to be closer to the camera, but the perspective is hard to make out.

Anyway, looking cool all the same.

Oblivion, I think you accentuated lights too much in your last post... your excellent model losses too much detail, maybe try to light the ship just to "give shape" to its surface

sky would also look much better with other kind of clouds and a little gradient in horizon

I know is a very far point of view, but try to do something with the little ships, they are not much appeciated

Maybe textures are too much detailed for such a big distance from the point of view

forget the previous render it was over-sharpened in postprocess and that's screwed the thing a bit. it was meant just as a compositing test (I mean the position of the ships on the pic)
plus I'm working without any shadow/ambient occlusion on the main ship to do this tests as to save time and this flattens the big ship a lot. a bit of ambient occlusion on the final pic will pop up all the lost details! :p

the model is excellent, It is just that they seem too tiny as if they where not detailed, of course they are not supposed to call too much attention on the final compositing but maybe changing the color of the blue fire on them would make the difference :thumbsup:

the fact is that I'm planning to use a blue volumetric for the terrestrial ships and a green one for the alien's ships, (different combustibles gives different flame colors) so that the difference between the races is more stressed. anyway this is nothing definitive I still have to model some different fighters and bombers for the terrestrials as to differentiate them a bit. this could change the whole (ships) composition later! :shrug:

i can't see well because of small size of the picture but i may suggest you to work a bit on the ship texture.. it's too blured..
if there is an atmosphere on the planet you may add a thin wall/glass refraction effect for the engines to show turbulence of hot air.. you may add it in your 3D app or later in Photoshop
but these are not so important things.. improving ship texture is the most important i think..

This is simply amazing. The models, textures, lights, are great. Some suggestions - in case you need them - the ship looked better with the darker bottom, in the newer renders with the light it looks more in-game style. Also, the little ships are a bit distracting, there's no order to their placement, and lastly, Have you thought of putting a large building in the foreground to create multiple planes? Either way, great job and good luck.

heya all sorry for the lack of updates..I've had some free time and I'm continuing the composition of the ships,with the newly released bomber :) there will be some alien crafts in the foreground trying to repulse the attackers

Agreeon the points mentioned by Virtuoso and I'd say also that maybe lowering the thrust effect of the bombers would lighten up the composition...just a thought here!

the alien craft, I've started modeling trying to do an hibrid between an helicopter, a plane and a spaceship..I came up with this design..but I might change something. critiques welcome!! :)

the terran ships are attacking in formation, that's why they're so aligned, alien ones will be more free and caotic,
as for the model, I've changed it a bit with larger wings, I'll post an update soon..

Impressive! Only thing, I would decrease bump level, it seems to noisy and it may increase rendering time if it will appear too small in the scene :thumbsup: but it is just an oppinion

heya guys!! long time I do not update this thread, the "problem" is that I'm going to move to london soon so I'll not have the time to finish this..at least for some months :cry:
