hehe, ok, restart for some fun.. always with lw..:)
so, first tests.
and first observations: that s hard!!
second observations: smooth of the curve is really important!!.. so, subdivision too..
and..big race...big mesh...big calculs..
always the same! .. :)
so, i start with a simple set up, as always; to try the "thing"
i first try with 2 rails, but one is enought, and calculs are faster .
heres the actual look of the rail
have problem to have good speed, enought weight, good curves...
for now, the first looping is really hard, and dont know if speed will be enought for the rest..
very hard subject! the link you give roberto are really cool to begin to understand the subject..
and for the 2 or more wagons... really dont know for now how i can make it..
at work!.. :)

the first looping is really hard, and dont know if speed will be enought for the rest..Hey man, looks very good so far...
And yes, I can see why you’re worrying about finishing the ride. Not much speed after that loop-de-loop! Maybe you can make that hill/curve a little less high, so you can keep some of that speed...
But overall very nice job, keep you the good work!

hehe so, after many tests.. the problem of the first loop is deleted..
in fact, the important things is.. proportions.. and gravity!
second loop need to be x % lower than the first one etc...
so, set up gravity to -15...add element by element, and test it..arf
i re used 2 rails for simulation, as in some turn 1 rail is not enought to keep wagon on the way, inertia is too big....
for the preview, i just attach the camera to the wagon, but as you will see, some really big cam shake... so its the wagon who has all these noze...
that work, but dont really know how the wagon has done all this way.... :D
that certainly need to be more subdivised..
that takes like 4 hours to calculated 900 frames...
anyway, track go on.. i start another one, and for now, try to set up mine (...), but will maybe go for a "real" one after have saw some link posted in the forum.
i start with a "downside" loop, who will be a "killer one" i think.. dont know if its possible tho.... master of rollercoaster will tell me.. :)
so, i really need to clean the rail to have smooth motion... finish the track, and cross finger to see if wagon go on...
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/yann.goument/perso/rollercoaster/preview_test_06.mov (quicktime 7.5 Mo)
the speed looks like good, but maybe its a little fast.. dont really know..
the last loop is hard too, but its already fixed..
and i have very big! problems to attach multiple wagons. for now dont know if its possible to have a "rope" constraint with lw dynamics (some tips??).. all i have test for now doesnt works.. we have a spring constraint, but work with the pivot point... so need to attach it to a null.. but cant see if i can "fix" the spring to not see the 2nd wagon go over the first one...
so, will see later for more wagons.. :)

I think you are probably overthinking this and trying to make a simulation of a rollercoaster instead of making an animation of a rollercoaster. This would be very difficult if not impossible in LW. The dynamics are just not robust enough.
Don't base your dynamics off your full track geometry. Use 'Make Path' to lock it to your more complex geometry. ClothFX and a poly chain are good for controlling multiple cars.
One problem I see with your track. How does the rollercoaster get back to the top?

One thing that bothers me is that the ride is really bumpy!
I can already see people vomiting,
But, the animation/ride animation is very cool! Keep up the good work!

hehe yeah, it could be call the "big loops"... ;)
coryc > I think you are probably overthinking this and trying to make a simulation of a rollercoaster instead of making an animation of a rollercoasteris it not the challenge, make simulation???
think im not overthinkin' it.. its a simulation.. gravity, friction, speed and inertia.. :)
This would be very difficult if not impossible in LW. The dynamics are just not robust enough.
hmm, but seems that works for me no?
i only push the wagon at the beginnin', and gravity make the rest.
for sure many problems, but hey!, after few hours on it.. and for sure will be deleted soon. :)

One problem I see with your track. How does the rollercoaster get back to the top? lol!

Its looking really good, but that first drop is going to push so much blood to the head that people prolly won't be awake for the rest of the ride, they will pass out. You should twist the track on the way down so that that car is on top when it gets near the bottom.
10 October 2004, 03:04 AM
is it not the challenge, make simulation???
No. The challenge is to make an animation of a rollercoaster with dynamics. It does not need to be a simulation. A small difference in words but a big difference in the end. Sorry, I didn't understand when you asked for tips that you didn't want any.
10 October 2004, 05:05 AM
ok here is there are two approaches on how to do this.
a) complete simulation for the whole animation
b) scene BY scene animation.
because of the complexity of the animation ill allow both kind of entries, but please state what kind of approach you are doing. Of course the key for both is simulation.

quick render test with "on board" cam with motion blur to see how that looks.
track length for now is 916 meters. all gravity based, but only for one wagon..

Looks very cool, i cant wait for the next update!
I wish i knew how to do that! LOL
11 November 2004, 11:43 AM
héhé it's look veeery cool ...
j' en suis encore tout retourné, ca marche super bien ^^
11 November 2004, 10:27 PM
so, think i have finish the track. i dont have twist things or such, but due to time consuming calcul, think i will stay on this one who works... :)
lenght of the track now is 1.2km. and takes 1.30 hours to run simulation with 1400 frames.
gravity dynamics for the first wagon, follower for the other.
the preview of what i have for now.

Nice! One part looks like the Tornado Rollercoaster!
11 November 2004, 01:46 PM
dewd this is seriously sick work !! NICE
11 November 2004, 06:39 PM
Very Nice! How did you get the camera to invert through the loop without any gimble issues?
11 November 2004, 08:16 PM
for the gimbal lock question, no problems as i just attach the camera to the first car, so that just follow the dynamics motion. :)
anyway, thx for the comments. and really need to find time to work on it, as i dont work since the last preview...
arf, where is the time!?
11 November 2004, 05:04 PM
Hi, nice animation :) It seems that your tracks are uneven...sometimes one track has a bump and the other one not...
12 December 2004, 12:44 PM
so, i cant finish this, as i dont have time since few weeks to work on it...
so will post the last preview as my "not finish, not rendered so not really" final entry for this rollercoaster contest :D
sorry for the bad preview...
so heres it it, http://perso.wanadoo.fr/yann.goument/perso/rollercoaster/YannGoument_FXWARS_ROLLERCOASTER.mov (12 Mo)
so as explain before, full dynamic simulation for the first wagon, full gravity based, simulation run from the beginning to the end without cut.
and a follower for the other wagon and voila :)

Dood that is too cool. I would really like to know how u did that. I use 3ds max and i was tottaly lost on what solution to go about for a dynamics simulation.
12 December 2004, 12:29 AM
not to bad, not to bad at all. It doesnt seem to slow down and speed up as much as it should. but maybe that because you only simulated one car and the rest follow.
depleteD - Reactor worked very well for me, have you tried using that? I think someone else used particals, but I dont remember how it turned out.
12 December 2004, 09:04 AM
yeah you re right Sir_Vuclan, i think like you. for sure a multiple wagon simulation will have better motion.
i never found a good way to attach other wagon, anyway not "easy and fast" solution. :)
12 December 2004, 08:44 PM
I like the fact that from the riders view, you have the impression that the rails are flexible and not very strong which adds to the "scared" feeling you get whn going on a roller coaster ride.
Too bad you didn't have the time to finish it, but it looks good none the less! :)
