View Full Version : Robot, Julien Vanhoenacker (Animation)

Title: Robot
Name: Julien Vanhoenacker
Country: France
Software: 3ds max, After Effects

A fairly big project for the copymachine printing paper DoubleA. My first international commercial, that would be seen in 10 countries including Europe.
I worked with this director before. The Actress is a Korean movie star (but i forgort the name). A lot of money was involved, and as i worked alone on the effects, I felt the pressure, the CG being critical here.
About 1 month just for the Robot and CopyMachine preliminary design, and then 2 months of production.
I used Max and AfterFX.

Hehe, I really liked it a lot. Great camera quality.

10-22-2004, 07:11 PM
nice job. almost everything looks great.

10-22-2004, 07:40 PM
No matter the simplicity of the robot, there is so much complexity there!!

I could spent an hour like some annoying people do, to find something with the animation or the lighting or the modelling, but I concider it as stupid since the overall purpose of the work is achieved!

No comments, magnificent work, great concept.

10-22-2004, 08:44 PM

I am korean so i know her face but i don't know her name either... really pretty...

did u have chance to talk to her in person? lol

anyway!! i just had a dream my grilfriend going out with my brother and made me so angry...

I called my girlfriend and yelled at her...

now i saw your animation.. i feel ok.. i am calm.. maybe i should call her and say sorry lol

10-22-2004, 11:44 PM
yeeeeeeeesssss, great work!!!
very good tracking!!! which tracker u´ve used?!?

10-23-2004, 05:55 AM
Absolutly amazing!! I love the idea, technically very nice to, but I think the idea makes it!

Wish we got ad's like that in the UK and less skin cream comercials, I may actually take notice then - Very impressive

10-23-2004, 06:24 AM
that's what you did. nice transformer and concept.....

10-23-2004, 07:17 AM
Some preliminary designs

10-23-2004, 09:51 AM
Haha trrop cool!!

vraiment du tres bon boulot ^^

bravo bravo!!

10-23-2004, 10:08 AM
C'est Magnifique!

You say you were the sole artist on the effects - that's really amazing! A substantial ammount of work.

I am curious about your materials and lighting setup. Did you just use a skylight with the office environment mapped onto it, or did you do something much more complex? ANd how did you get those great diffuse reflections on the metal?

Thanks for a great post - very inspiring.

10-23-2004, 10:44 AM
Great work

10-23-2004, 03:26 PM
Tu trés trés beau boulot, felicitations !

10-23-2004, 03:31 PM

10-23-2004, 05:49 PM
it realy screams out : PROFESIONAL WORK . Congratulations.

10-23-2004, 06:14 PM
Simply amazing, not only the 3D and the rendering, but the idea. Like all good commercials, the important thing is the idea....and if its funny it will be remembered and talked about...

I love it.

The motion matching is extremely good. The robot looks incredible. Concept is very amusing.

My only crit is the ripped paper doesn't quite look real.

10-23-2004, 09:00 PM
Just a little word to say "Super boulot !!"

10-23-2004, 10:22 PM
Very professional! very cool man and a good commercial.
The only critic i would add to it would be that the sound that the robot makes i think is a little bit too garbled for me.

Other than that its preatty man!

10-23-2004, 10:25 PM
The copy machine robot looks great. How's she going to get smacked up!

10-23-2004, 10:32 PM
I'm surprised the advertiser would be okay with the woman getting hit...

most people I know aren't cool with violence against women, even if it is CG...especially to the point where it leaves a mark on her face. I was kinda shocked.

Cool Robot.

10-23-2004, 10:38 PM
hehe....awesome! love the transforming sequence....*drools*...i want one of those. the commercial itself was also good, the CG and live action went very well together:thumbsup:

KWAK has a point though...

10-23-2004, 11:02 PM
Nice Job! I like it. Cant wait to see it on tv :)

10-23-2004, 11:06 PM

You should be very proud of this amazing work.
5 stars.

10-23-2004, 11:19 PM
fantastic job, really amazing

10-23-2004, 11:48 PM
I have to admit, I had similar thoughts about seeing the woman being hit. Must be cos im not used to it. Doesnt happen in the Uk very often. Although I definately think it is a good idea. i mean, its obvious she didnt really get hurt. And why not anyway?? u see guys getting gobbled up, smacked in the face, bitten in the ass 6 ways from sunday so why not females??

Anyway KICK ASS commercial. Cant say more than whats been said. Damn good work. And what a fiiine lady.

10-23-2004, 11:59 PM
awesome work dude

10-24-2004, 12:09 AM
@kanex (member.php?u=6922),
wow I saw your ani, that is very nice..and I have a few question about this.
do you use bluescreen, compositing or both?

10-24-2004, 12:20 AM
Much respect to that piece. That's what all commercials should be made of!
In a way...

10-24-2004, 12:57 AM
great work, the lighting and compositing is very well executed

10-24-2004, 01:00 AM
très très impressionant :bounce:

10-24-2004, 01:34 AM
Wow, this is a really nicely put together commercial. The whole thing is just funny. Kinda makes me thinks of both transformers and office space at the same time. as far as the CG goes, this is obviously well put together. I heard Starcraft sound bits in there for the robots movements, but I can't hold that against you. I hope this adds to the attention your work gets you so far.

10-24-2004, 02:01 AM
Excellent work!

10-24-2004, 02:45 AM
I envy your skill. :D

10-24-2004, 02:56 AM
wow, thats truly very awesome! i love transformers and in this commercial he really works excellent!

great work!

10-24-2004, 03:39 AM
HAHAH that's hilarious :D

amazing work man!

i agree, the ripped paper could be more paperlike, but it being a commercial, almost no one will notice.

interesting points about the girl being hit. I think it was funny as hell, but i think they should've left out the mark on her face eheh... :hmm: but her expression indicated that it was ok i guess

i was also entertained by hearing those Doom sound effects on the robot ;)
(i know they're not necessarily 'from doom' but that's where i got to know them)

     :applause:

10-24-2004, 04:25 AM
Ahahhaa, that was cute!

10-24-2004, 04:45 AM
Really nice ;)
I like it a lot. Very funny, and technically well done.

10-24-2004, 06:11 AM
geez, that is damn nice. THat's totally incredible u got to do a job for Double A paper.... i loooove their commercials. They have a great (but short) history of really innovative commercials for their products... hilarious stuff, continuing the tradition!

10-24-2004, 06:13 AM
oooh yeah... u gotta get us the name (and #) of that korean actress! hehehe...

10-24-2004, 06:54 AM

i see nothin to crit

10-24-2004, 07:12 AM
great. a bit agressive but still cool! :)

10-24-2004, 07:31 AM
simply brilliant... and even more being a single-man's job... I'm still playing it and still laughin.
The tracker was spotless and the actress played along just fine with the robot. Plus being a transformers fan... what can I say, I was touched. Fairly well and realistic materials that seemed to fit the overall look perfectly... also congratulate the director on my behalf lol
seriously exellent job

DEFENITELY TWO THUMBS UP
and of course 5 stars... keep it comming!

10-24-2004, 07:59 AM
Thats a great little commercial, nice work too.:applause:

10-24-2004, 09:06 AM
omagad ;)
j'avait deja été impressionné en voyant sur les forums de sup' les premiers essais
mais alors la ... joli boulot, j'arrive rien à dire d'autre, j'suis estomaqué complet

10-24-2004, 09:09 AM
Wow! Very nice work  The client should be very satisfied :applause:
Btw, which is the budget of a project like this in Europe?

10-24-2004, 09:16 AM
hahaha that was great! he smacked her with the paper :p

great animation and design man

10-24-2004, 09:52 AM
That's a good clip.
But, the actress is not a movie star.
I think she is just a common extra model.
I have never seen her before in Korean movie and TV show.
It's a good work...

10-24-2004, 09:55 AM
HEHE :bounce: great work! LOL for 10 min . commercial no.1 :]

and :applause: to very nice girl

10-24-2004, 10:58 AM
Nice idea and design of the tramsformer .
I like the 15 second version more than the 30 s' .

10-24-2004, 11:35 AM
Great fun watching!

Thanks for your awsome work :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

10-24-2004, 11:35 AM
Haha :D
Very nice work and very good idea

10-24-2004, 11:40 AM
Thanks a lot for all you good comments and crits!

This version is the director version, including real hit on the girl and red mark. The TV version has no hit and thus no red mark...

Of course the violence against women don't pass the sensors.

10-24-2004, 11:59 AM
I loved the 15s long one! It was absolutely hilarious!! I love the character the bot has! Lot's of it in it! Especially when he was leaving the stage for the first time, the way he was swaying his arms was fantastic! Very subtle, yet very cool!!  Definitely top-notch commercial which I actually enjoyed watchig several times! This is very rare and also this should be the way commercials should be done! Awesome!

10-24-2004, 12:51 PM
Very nice piece of work. I very much prefer the first one though, it has more characterisation too it, plus we can actually see the reason she is stomping at the mashine. He just swats her lightly with some paper after she was bashing and bashing on him, so it is only fair.

The transforming sequence is well done, although physically impossible due to the size differences. The fact that you got it to look good with the fact that it is physically impossible makes it even better!

Great stuff, really good camera and lighting matching.

10-24-2004, 12:51 PM
Brilliant! Excellent design, composition and animation. Well done!

I think the 30 second version works a lot better, the motives and actions are more clear and the joke is delivered better as a result.

10-24-2004, 01:15 PM

10-24-2004, 01:19 PM
Man, youre one skilled artist by itself, i love it!

10-24-2004, 02:04 PM
This is a very nice animation dude

On est loin de l'univers d'Indigen mais ca le fait bien
lille powa :)

10-24-2004, 02:20 PM
Excellent CG man, although It's a bit violent for Australian TV I mean the girl getting hit and having a big mark on her head. lol.

On a more serious note, the sound designer should be shot, not only are all the effects form the most cliched and over used libraries but the 15 second commercial features an audio sample from ID Softwares Doom3, the file is 'computer_arp.ogg', and for those of you playing at home it can be found in the 'sound/chris/wavs/vrenna_cpu1_melodic' directory of the 'pak003.pk4' (Doom 3\base) pack file.

So I hope he got permission from Chris Vrenna and/or ID Software before hand.

Or I am in fact wrong :D

10-24-2004, 02:25 PM
I'm dead :scream:

10-24-2004, 02:59 PM
Great commercials. A brilliant result and well impressed that u did it single handed too. Great idea and technically sound well done bud!

10-24-2004, 03:31 PM
Love it! Cool animation, your definately an expert

10-24-2004, 04:40 PM
Respect...! U did it all alone!? WOW

10-24-2004, 05:12 PM
thats excellent! :applause:

10-24-2004, 05:12 PM
lol, great commercial. Thats gotta be the coolest copy machine evar.

10-24-2004, 06:16 PM
lol, funny and well made comercial!

10-24-2004, 07:26 PM
Funniest thing I've seen all day. Fantastic work.

10-24-2004, 08:01 PM
hy! what king of ligthing did you used in this project?

10-24-2004, 08:25 PM
Very nice.

10-24-2004, 08:48 PM
Everyday I want to beat the crap out of the lousy copy machines in my office too! I just hope they don't revolt someday like the one in the commercial did.
Loved the robot -- and I loved the lady even more! Good stuff!

10-24-2004, 08:56 PM
rofl that's awesome !

10-24-2004, 09:14 PM
wow... er.... i mean the cg is great - creative, fluid, the robot has a realisitc "im really here" feel to it, but...

am i the only one kinda... shocked by the violence... kinda? is it necessary to have the mark? could the robot not give her the stern look of dissappointment? is it her fault she kicked an object which she considered inanimate? is it even her fault her OFFICE uses paper type x?
im not against violence in movies or on tv shows at all, but i think it's kinda inappropriate (and in this case, unecessary).

hoping there's a slightly cut version when it goes public,

nope, im not the only one, apparently. im also glad to see it's cut for tv.
great job!

10-24-2004, 10:49 PM
Really an amazing piece of work. Great idea and a fun animation piece.

10-24-2004, 11:12 PM
CG is cool man, well done for sure...

I'm just really amazed that the client accepted, or even worse, came up with such story line, the girl getting slapped is really shocking to me. Violence against women is not something that sales for sure. If violence against copy machine was funny in "office space", the revenge of the copy machine against a girl didn't make me smile a single second, and the shot of her marked face in the end only makes it worse. Maybe lots of teenage SM Transformer manga fans are gonna trip on that and buy some double A paper after that... but I'm not too sure they represent a big part of the market. Ripping off the pages was just enough to make a point, slapping the girl is a commercial suicide. Maybe I'm being too sensitive here, but most secretaries in charge of buying that kinda ressources in companies might not find that so funny neither. My 2 cents ;)

great CG work anyway.

PS : I know it sounds kinda bad... but as it's about being constructive here, I thought you might find it interresting to hear a "different" opinion.

10-24-2004, 11:58 PM
That's a FANTASTIC job, very well done!! The one thing that gets me though is how many people keep saying that the tracking is so wonderful, etc, etc; almost every shot is a locked down camera and the ones that aren't are so short and straight forward that they would be very easy to hand track. This is in no way a critisism of the piece just the posters.

10-25-2004, 01:25 AM
one word - meat

10-25-2004, 01:28 AM
Oh ,my god!
This work is Graet! Excellent!.........Very good.
I like it deeply.

I need to know the name of the actress. I think I love her.

10-25-2004, 03:02 AM
:bounce: yahoo!!! that's what i call "superb"!!! nice work bob!

10-25-2004, 03:05 AM
Great Great Great work!!!

I love the tracking on it, how it stays so well with the video. The lighting is excellent and you took out that "TOO PERFECT" CG look. You are an artist

Hahahaha I just realized how violent American people are, lol. You obviously have never seen WWF now WWE wrestling, women get beat up all the time, chair shots and all.

You've also probably never seen a chinese kungfu movie, they are 10xs rougher on women than even US wrestling.

Is it true that Spiderman got equivalent of an "R" rating in Europe? Like only adults could see it?

USA violent all the way. I'm not a violent person, and don't think hitting anyone is great, but it is just an eye opener.

But this is a great, great peice of work by the artist.

10-25-2004, 03:29 AM
lol great work!

she name "park han byul "

10-25-2004, 03:49 AM

Anyway, korean girl looks so gorgeous

10-26-2004, 12:55 AM
one word - meat

Seven words... You don't know what you're talking about.

Like i said before, there was no critisism of the piece it's pretty well flawless, awesome work, but you people who keep saying that the tracking is so flawless don't know anything about tracking. They're all locked down cameras except for one 2 second truck out.

10-26-2004, 09:17 AM
Very nice... I love the character design. The way the robot moves is pretty cool!

11-04-2004, 02:47 PM
Man, this robot is perfect! Good work!

11-04-2004, 07:22 PM
I agree with everyone else.. this robot is great! Congratulations on a first class piece!

11-05-2004, 04:30 PM
Groovy, funny, good acting (actress and robot). Altought I have a preference for the first design of the robot (as it can be seen on your portfolio), the final one is like a big cool toy. :applause: :applause: :applause:
