I remember the first war, the way the Heaven's burned. There are so many things in time and space. So many worlds and universes. But so many people forget one of the greatest moments in time, one of the most powerful turning points. So many people forget a dimension far from our own, in a space that we reach only by death. The first war, the war where Lucifer fell at the hands of ArchAngel Michael. The war of Heaven.... Perhaps I can paint you a picture to remember the point where order, turned to chaos...

This is Lucifer and Michael, vague character sketch, very basic introduction.

Little more of the scene, main characters are at Heaven's Gates which are breaking down, and there are fights breaking down within the city in the background between other angels. The final scene will have a night sky, with a bloody red tint to it ... huge amounts of work left to do to solidify the early stages.

Hey thanks for replying to my thread
Ah the battle between good and evil! you can't get much more iconic than that, a good choice to work with. do you think there would be a way of working some moral shades of gray in your scene? My boyfriend is a HUGE 9-year 40k fan and the fascinating thing about that universe is that there is much confusion between good and evil, it's difficult to find pure good or evil. confusion also relates to battle, the subject of your scene. just some stuff to think about :)
I made a pretty major update yesterday, so please check it out
I'm trying to get some good conceptualization discussion going....

This is just a dive right in draft of Lucifer (character on left in rough sketches).... just messing around with how I want things to look in photoshop such as painting style, realism etc....

Outline of the Lucifer's Head, basic areas to prep for color

Final Head for Lucifer, coloring work in progress.... still needs some color detail and of course the addition of the rest of the body.

ooh, careful how you use the word 'final' this early. i might find ull be using it far too much. either way, interesting concept, ive not seen much so far in the competition that doesnt relate directly and obviously to science fiction.
have you considered switching the combat roles of lucifer and michael? that is, putting lucifer on the offensive and michael on the defensive. the idea is to create more tension by the overall battle being on the verge of loss (unless of course your going for evil >=])
id also suggest using a most dynamic approach to the fight. they both have wings, so consider having one or both in the air. if the player in the offensive is in the air attacking down leaning into the attack with their total weight, it helps accentuate the aggressiveness of the attack.
at the moment, both characters are at even distance and same angle from the camera - it makes it look flat. consider trying different positions - maybe a character closer to the camera, ie the character you want the view to sympathise with (if were to select one of the two).
keep on keepin on, should be a good competition!
hope all this helps

I have done quite a bit here, really getting the feel. I want it to be like a classic mural, a beautiful painting of such an incredible event that you would find in some great arcitecture... a cathedral or castle environment. It is really coming together as if I were painting with acrylics on a traditional canvas, where I can really feel the effort and emotion showing itself in the work. Far from done but still I am enjoying the direction. I often go over and over a piece of traditional painting so this is no different. Additionally I have been taking digital photos of myself to help with muscle structures and shadowing. Characters always are best with proper references. Obviously I don't have wings so those stages are from another obsession ;) As I do much studying of angels in a daily part of life. Well I hope that gives some people a look into my mind of where my goals are and how I do my work. The background buildings will have a lot more in the way of line art submitted for people that like to see the full stages, as with my characters, I often when painting do very little with line and mostly just dive right in doing work with shadows and colors..... Well, until next time *vanishes*

Peddy : Thank you for the comments. Couple of things to note thus far. The "final" word I used there represented the "shape", as you can tell it is quite far from being complete ;) As for having one character flying, that actually has been something already in the works as Michael may be air born... however this depends on how I set the scene. Based upon a lot of elements there are a lot of things going on. First off you have Lucifer and Michael, the key elements, at battle. Now, I am probably going to wind up damaging their wings as this by no means is a bloodless war. And that too will be detail put in beyond what was seen in the initial sketches. If I leave Michael intact he may indeed be in the air. However I kind of like the balance of the two of them, though seemingly flat now... there is a peace to this war, as it is a war that was meant to be in order to maintain balance in the universe. Along with them being somewhat balanced however, you will have the gates behind them, and they themselves are in shambles hanging from their hinges as the gates of heaven are torn open from the chaos. In the background there will be more of the destruction as you will see more battles between angels... and perhaps the implementation of demons as we can see Lucifer is already turning. Michael will also be in a more glorious tone, where he will in the later pieces be in armor, where Lucifer is merely clothed, but still holding up well in battle. The sky will really bring the piece together... as the moon and color of the sky will really show to the final story write up. The movement through the picture will be a more centered balanced battle center, with the gates and fence being a draw away, and then the different battles and detailed heavenly buildings in the back drawing you from one side to the other, most likely with in ovular motion to the overall piece. All I can say at this point, is we'll see where it all goes :)
