It's going to be about a war of independance.
The federation of 'the Belt' is a group of Nations inhabiting the larger astroids of the ring surrounding the planet of Fenris. Originally from the planet the people of 'the Belt' want independance. This is triggered by the economic dominace of mining and trade resources by the 'Central Body', the gouvernment of Fenris. Money is flowing to the planet and not to the people of 'the Belt'. After long decades of poverty 'the Belt' started a revolt. They began the revolt by stopping and hijacking trade ships enroute to the planet. A swift response from Fenris was assured.

Well, Im not a good storyteller, but this is the idea... it's a start :)

Oh, the illustration is to depict the battle of independance between the astroids.
Lots of ships, action and rocks. (well, that's I'm going to aim for)

10 October 2004, 08:54 PM (

I tried to find a design for the flags of both sides. Just a first step to establish an identity for both sides.

10 October 2004, 09:10 PM
Well I did a bit of thinking about the look of both groups.
This is what I got for now.
Since Fenris has a lot of recources, their ships and equipment are in tip top condition.
For the Fenris ships I will draw my inspiration from modern jets like the stealth fighter or F-22.
The Belt on the other hand don't have that much money and are dependent of 2nd hand Fenris fighters or fighters they've developed, but which are less advanced.
Their look will also be that of the rugged and used sort in contrary to the sleek and fast look of the Fenris fighters. My inspiration for the Belt Fighters will come from 50ies Fighter jets.
I hope to post some concept drawings tomorrow.

I don't try to think about the composition right now, just trying to establish the elements that will be used in the compostion.

And hey guys, thanks for the thoughts. Much appreciated.

10 October 2004, 11:10 PM (

I did some quick design sketches for some ships. Not very happy, but hey this is a start :)

These ships don't look much like 1950's jetdesign that I was looking for, but they could be used as designs for 2nd hand Fenris ships. I think I won't use wings on the Fed. ships, 'cos they are designed to fly in space only, defending the Astroids.

Well hopefully tomorrow more...

10 October 2004, 02:58 PM
Those flags are cool, hope they make it to final image. Maybe you could draw more aerodynamic ships?

10 October 2004, 03:47 PM
Thank you Ranath.

These are Fed. ships. The more aerodynamic fighters will be those of Fenris.
So stay tuned. :)

And the flags will be on the ships one way or another.

10 October 2004, 07:41 PM (

Some other designs for the fighters.

10 October 2004, 04:45 AM
Good start :)

11 November 2004, 11:51 AM
waste of space...

11 November 2004, 11:53 AM
Hey thank you element5!

11 November 2004, 12:03 PM (

Fed. fighter color concept 01.
Colors inspired by Korean era Mig fighters.
Nose art to make it more aggressive...

11 November 2004, 12:04 PM (

variation concept 02

11 November 2004, 02:59 PM
ey art2, those designs look great, are you going to keep the older ships? (the belt ones)
I think they looked a bit too human, too much like nowadays' jets, the new ones are really cool, between the 2 latest versions I prefer the one with the lateral fins, it looks more "complete" to me, but they both would make it, good job!

11 November 2004, 03:03 PM
These are actually Belt ship designs.
I used the older designs as some sort of inspiration.

Glad you like 'em. Hope I can come up with some new designs for the Fenris ships.
(note to self: think sleeker, newer, faster, stealthier, sexier...)

11 November 2004, 03:14 PM
ok, they looked to me quite new and fast, that's why I thought it was fed. ships, if this are the old belt ones I'll be very interested in seeing the newer and faster fed. ships! ;)

(idea/sugerence: what about adding some visible weapons?)

11 November 2004, 03:17 PM
weapons, yeah I forgot to ask you guys for suggestions in that area. :D
There will be guns.... but I have to figure out where to put them...

11 November 2004, 10:04 PM
:applause: very sleek design, as for weapons. How about a top mounted, central, forward facing pulse canon? nothing to big and bulky, just a simple design that maybe comes out of a panel. I asume this is a one manned vehicle?

Great work

11 November 2004, 10:14 PM
The design is already pretty top-heavy, I would stick either one large gun underneath the main body, or two smaller cannons on the wings. I might also round out the cockpit a bit, I think it would look a little more slick and futuristic than having it blocked off.

11 November 2004, 10:48 PM (

Thanks guys. I blocked the cockpit off on purpose :D I didn't want it to look too slick, I want to reserve that feature for the Fenris fighters. But I agree the cockpit need more work, maybe metal rims (sorry don't know the english word...) to make it look more "50ies".

Here's a sketch I did in Painter, think I'm gonna explore your great suggestions.

Cheers fellas.

For the final piece... I'm thinking... movie poster... :hmm:

11 November 2004, 03:55 PM
Hi Art2! I really like concept 02 and your last sketch for gun placement! The flags are cool and will help get across the idea of the differing sure to paint it on the ships!

Also, hope all is well with your wife and unborn child. I'm praying for all of you!

11 November 2004, 04:45 PM
Hi Robin, thank you very much.

Phweeeew, got to get this thing started again.
I'm still thinking movieposter, also an excuse for me to do some characters ;)

More drawings and concepts comming soon I promise :D

11 November 2004, 05:10 PM
the ships look alot like fighter planes - and I liek teh fact they're not completely obviously aerdynmaic or supersmooth - adds a practical realism :)

11 November 2004, 06:08 PM
Wicked stuff! Only one complaint - the Beld dudes in my opinion should have bit more
ragtag/do-it-yourself style in ships, maybe some contraptions like shields to keep the
craft protected to some extent from the gazillions of rocks in the belt. Nothing fancy
just a plate of metal sticking out from the hull or something like that... sorry I can`t explain
it exactly... I`m better at drawing than speech :]

11 November 2004, 09:56 PM
there's a nice progression from the first image.. keep it up!

11 November 2004, 10:31 PM
more sketches please....I need my daily fix of your drawings...more more MORE!!! :)

11 November 2004, 12:14 AM
bolchover: that's what I was aming for man. Thanks.

Ganthu: you explained it very well my friend. Very interesting idea, I think I'll go for shields like those found in StarTrek. I definately aim for a ragtag-look for the Belt ships.
When I started this I had this idea of StarWars vs. StarTrek look (StarTrek beeing the Fenris guys). Thanks for the input!

hydrocell: thanks for watching!

robin: I finally have my Painter IX upgrade, so it's time to get to work work work ;) Updates soon.

11 November 2004, 08:54 PM
arrrrr-AAACK- THUMP!.......

that's me falling over dead because there are no new sketches from you. WAAAAH! :scream:

11 November 2004, 12:02 PM (

Finally an update. Hopefully I can do some more this week. Thanks for watching!

11 November 2004, 05:39 PM
Fine sketches U have here!I like them very much. They remind me Wing Commander saga.I can't wait to see them in action.Im also looking for U including characters in your picture.I thing that there aren't so much entries with large space for them.Keep it up! ;-)

11 November 2004, 06:19 PM
cool! good one!
its complete asimmetry (or however it's spelled) makes it very original

And now that you have 1 ship for each side, lets see the full fleet :scream:! hehehe... It will be interesting seeing how do you make more ships, different, but holding to the styles of the 2 already posted...

11 November 2004, 07:03 PM (

HiPcCuP23 , elmasfeo thanks guys!

This is a quick study. I wanted to see them in action too :)
This is not at all the final composition.

From this little study I can conclude that I still have to design lots of stuff. Like the astroids & gunplacements, Fenris battlecruisers, The planet etc, etc. And of course some faces behind the battle.
I hope the differences in technology is made clear by the two fighter designs. I will try to keep this in all the other designs.

11 November 2004, 07:15 PM
i like all your ships, the concept is good too ,and nice textures

keep going and see ya in the end

11 November 2004, 06:46 PM
Cool project! And very very impressive so far!
Keep going on!

11 November 2004, 04:59 AM
Nice chaotic composition. This has alot going for it. Look forward to the rest of your descisions!

11 November 2004, 09:55 AM
Great stuff dude!! This really is becomming a big project...

11 November 2004, 02:28 AM (

Just a concept for a "Belt" pilot. He's downloading data before going on a mission.

11 November 2004, 02:31 AM
melkao, spazz, v_shane, dai-j-to, thank you guys!

11 November 2004, 10:33 AM
nice style ! I like ! :D
but what will be the SCENE? I think you should try to set on the final view before detialling :)
anyway cool ones...
the guy in green is especcially cool to me :D

11 November 2004, 10:42 AM
No, this will not be the final scene, I detail things for my own pleasure and study. And it's all part of the background behind the final composition. Hell I don't even know how the final comp will look like, haha! (got some ideas tho)

thanks for the feedback!

11 November 2004, 11:23 PM (

Just a concept for a "Belt" pilot. He's downloading data before going on a mission.
ooooh me likey!..except can you make him look less like Ben Affleck and more like George Clooney? :) HA!

I'm so glad you are posting again, I almost didn't make it after falling over last time! Keep it up, I like the concept, love the sketches. YAY!!

11 November 2004, 12:10 AM
George Clooney huh? ...

Ok, I'll make him captain of the Medic-ship ;)

12 December 2004, 02:41 PM
Very nice so far. I like the concept sketch on page 3.

FYI: there's a planet named Fenris in the "Warhammer 40,000" universe, but it looks absolutely nothing like any of this, so I don't think anyone would say that you're copying.

Can't wait to see the final piece.

12 December 2004, 12:53 AM (

I made this 1,5 weeks ago, thought I would finish it. I post it anyway.
I don't think I will use these characters, but it helped me to get the feel of the story.
I thought a lot about the final comp while making these.
Ideas for the final comp will be next.

43 days, 23h, 13 min, 33 sec left :D

Hey Chris thanks man! I'm not too familiar with the Warhammer universe, the name Fenris was just the first thing that popped up :)
I also could have named the planet Naboo... wait a sec...

12 December 2004, 12:56 AM
=D Great designs bud! Really cartoony, but at the same time, very detailed!! Im liking your style, very pixar-esque =) YUP 40 SUM DAYS LEFT =O

12 December 2004, 12:59 AM
... just turn my head around and there's somebody replying :) Thanks man!
Good luck with yours!

12 December 2004, 05:56 PM
Your style of painting is original, good road

12 December 2004, 02:48 AM
Hi Art2, just dropped by to wish you luck, I've always liked your painting style a lot, and you're doing an excellent job so far.

Sir Patroclo

12 December 2004, 07:42 PM
I like this latest character. Keep it up!

12 December 2004, 01:12 AM (

The first of a series of battle scene concepts I'll be doing. Hope an idea will pop up worth developing into the final piece.

12 December 2004, 01:14 AM
Tranchefeux, Sir P, Robin, thanks guys for the kind words!

12 December 2004, 02:01 AM
it's great to see some scenes! if this is the beggining of a series, I'll be watching this with interest!

imho, in the one you already posted that ship is occluding (spelling?) too much of the scene, it could work if you expanded the image vertically, I think.

good luck art2, I love your style!

12 December 2004, 08:10 AM
some cool characters you have here.....

12 December 2004, 05:05 PM
hi, very nice concepts. You seem to effortlessly make your charcters feel futuristic. be interesting to see what you do with them....

12 December 2004, 10:37 PM (

I planned to do more concepts, but I couldn't find the time. And I had this image of a hangar stuck in my head for a while now with people running around, preparing a ship. Trying to get ready to answer a sudden attack by the enemy...
I did a quick sketch. The people in it are a bit static, but that is going to change.

Next I will finally start the coloring WIP.
The title is just a temp thing.

12 December 2004, 03:13 PM
oooo...I like this Marlon! You could really get a good feel for the rushing and anxiety with the poses of the people. Keep going! Can't wait to see it finished!

12 December 2004, 08:48 PM (

2 more ideas and quick sketches...
I like the bottom one the most. Think I'll work that one out.
I have to make a decision now... man, I love deadlines! (2,5 weeks is a generous deadline tho...;)

12 December 2004, 09:57 PM
I think you are making a good choice with the bottom one, the hangar sketch looked very cool and promising, but maybe wasn't "grand" enough...

it looks a bit difficult to go into that cockpit, isn't it? the ship is too high or the footbridge (is that the word?) is too low... the pose looks a bit "uncomfortable" to me... just a stupid detail:hmm:
btw, what's the guy in the upper image doing? hiding? that's something not very heroic :D

I love the tilted view, good luck with it and the deadline!

12 December 2004, 10:28 PM
Yeah, the footbridge is a bit too low and the perspective is not right ;)
I'll fix that while painting.

The story that I'll try to depict is that the Fenris have found a way (cracked the security code...) to penetrate the energyshield that surrounds and protects the hangar and the astroid(s). Using methods that are still unknown today :) they manage to mount a surprise attack on the capital astroid. Causing mayhem especially on the fighterhangars.
Pilots scramble and try to take off with the remaining fighters.
Foreground: Pilot mounting cockpit
Middleground: Huge explosions and enemy fighters strafing
Background: Main enemy force, planet Fenris, fighters penetrating shield

Oh, and that guy in the first pic. He's just nailed to the ground... not the bravest of the flock :D

12 December 2004, 10:06 PM
the last image is definetly the best idea so far. Is this the whole extent of the image though? Because i could see you making a huge battlefield with a spectacular view of all thats going on...
i would imagine this scene being in the upper right hand corner(right in the viewers "eye") and the battle raging on have a great deal of talent and i know you'll be able to pull it off

ps: Not to sound rude but how is your family? Did everything turn out ok?

12 December 2004, 10:11 PM
I agree with Ajay with a twist. What if you flipped the image horizontal and then added more of the scene on the right to give it a left to right read.

01 January 2005, 10:25 PM (

First steps into coloring and getting the main elements in place.
Yep I flipped the canvas. Don't know if I'll keep it, think I'll decide later in the proces.
Thanks for the comments!

Ajay, we're fine, thank you for asking. If I can't finish this in time that's because I'm running around changing diapers :)

01 January 2005, 05:40 AM
Nice colors! As usual, you're showing great artistry.
I also like the bottom composition the best....
and am a little embarassed to admit that I thought the mis-sized ship (however you might put it) added a nice touch of anxiety and hurry to the scene.... oh well:rolleyes:

01 January 2005, 02:03 PM (

Octothreat thanks for the kind words!

Little update.
You can click the image to get a bigger view...

01 January 2005, 12:34 AM (

Next, rough colors for the pilot and finalize the design of the craft. Not sure about the nose...
I want to add some nose art on the craft later on.

01 January 2005, 03:06 AM
im so glad to hear about ur family doing well....hope it stays that way!

as for teh current pose of the he leaving or entering the plane? And what happened to the original fallin/hiding?

i think the ship to the right was the right simply looks right to the eye

01 January 2005, 11:10 AM
She's entering the plane... :)
This is going to be the heroic version of the pilot.
Think I'm going to add a mechanic (halfway the ladder, pointing, looking scared...)

I'm also considering to expand the canvas, create more space on the left.
I've decided I want a closer view of the enemy crafts flying by.

Thanks Ajay.

01 January 2005, 01:16 AM (

I think I'm happy with the ships design.
Not too hightech and sleak, just like a 50-ies MIG fighter.
The pilot is looking at the enemy fighters passing by, comming from behind her after they caused the explosion, turning for a second run...

Ideas for a mascot to be painted on her ship's nose are welcome :)
No naked women, 'cos the pilot is a woman. And no, no naked men either... :D

01 January 2005, 02:21 AM (

Minor updates... I probably should lock myself up so I can finish this in time.

01 January 2005, 02:36 AM (

Further work on the pilot and ship.

... what day is it?...

01 January 2005, 02:41 AM (

Ah, what the heck, here's a close up :)

01 January 2005, 10:09 AM
It's difficult as I have found myself to stick to one style of the smooth clean look and feel. However it's seems like you have carry out that consistency very well. I see you have fliped your image around a few times. Undecided? If the pilot and the spacecraft is the main focus of your frame work I would suggestion to flip it around so the main elements sits on the left. Usually the eyes pick thing up from either the center or left much more quickly. In this case I think its better to have you image sitting on the left. Take for instant as if we were to read a book, we automatic move our eyes to the left at first point. Nicely coming along, keep up it.

01 January 2005, 10:30 AM
Thanks Ecura for your feedback.

Yes, I'm still not 100% sure whether to flip the image or not.
On the left there will be enemy fighters comming from the right, that could also be a point to focus on. The main enemy force will also be positioned on the left over the planet.
Because I have tilted the view, for now my eyes find it more pleasing to travel from left to (upper) right. But that can change when all elements (enemy fighters, enemy mothership, mechanic on ladder) are in place.

Thanks again!

01 January 2005, 10:36 AM (

Here's the flipped version btw.

01 January 2005, 11:46 AM
This is much more comfortable to look at now. Humm yes I agree it depends what gets put on to determine which flip works better but my guess as it is now.... keep it as it is.

01 January 2005, 12:38 PM
Great work so far, the soft rendering of the ship and piolt is absolutely superb. Everything seems so crisp. sorry but i dont have any critique for you, if it stays this quality you will definately have a top entry. keep it up

01 January 2005, 12:44 PM
conundrum, thanks mate!

ok, now back to work...

01 January 2005, 08:01 PM (

Aaah, the pilot only has one arm!...

01 January 2005, 03:08 AM (

Weathering the ship is fun :)
This fighter is flown by an Ace, I've added the number of kills. I'll continue weathering and add some nose-art next.
After this I'll work on the enemy fighters.

01 January 2005, 07:43 AM
I love how clean everything looks. Personally, the final I think should have just a little bit of textures, but the concepts look great simplified. :) Great progress! Looking forward to the final.

01 January 2005, 08:54 PM
I like your style dude. Keep it up. Cant wait for the final.

Id like to see some chipped of paint here and there to break it up a little.

01 January 2005, 09:06 PM
Chipped up paint, hahaha, just finished adding some my friend.
What a coincident!

Thanks for the kudos guys!

01 January 2005, 02:57 AM (

The fighter is almost finished, except for further detail which I will do in the final coloring. Think I'm going to make the canopy open side ways (less work, heheh...)
I wanted to add a mechanic, but I will do him only if I have sufficient time left.

01 January 2005, 12:49 PM
no criticisms. I really like your method of colouring - very smooth, but still gives a feeling of lots of depth. I guess I like it because it's different from my very detaily way of rendering. Hope you finish it all,

01 January 2005, 04:40 PM
I see you've found your nose art. Very nice! Reminds me of the P-51 Mustangs from WWII. Can we have a peek at the rest of your canvas?

edit: I mean the P-41 Mustang.

01 January 2005, 07:14 PM (

Finally the enemy...
One fighterbomber escorted by a fighter.

bolchover, thanks for the support!
I too hope to finish in time :)
Ilikesoup, thanks buddy! Here's the canvas. Working on the middle parts now...
It's P-51(D) btw, my favorite plane, very sexy.

01 January 2005, 11:27 PM
Need some carbon scoring on that ship  looks great.

01 January 2005, 01:38 AM
Wow, this is really cool work! Always loved your clean lines and colouring style in the daily sketches.. :D The only thing that strikes me is that the pilot girl might be a little hard to pick out against the dark background. Maybe a bit of silhouette lighting from the flames or something? In any case, looking forward to seeing the final product!

01 January 2005, 03:26 AM (

V_Shane thanks man!
What do you mean by carbon scoring? :)

Vitriolic, hey, I was thinking the same thing about the pilot today. I think you are right, I'll try tweaking it at the final coloring stage. Thanks mate!

Enemy fighters ... check.
Next the background (planet and Mothership)

01 January 2005, 04:31 AM
it certainly keeps getting better, i cant get over how crisp the overall look is. it really stands out, still no real crits, im just looking forward to seeing it finished.

01 January 2005, 10:46 AM (

I'm not happy with the jet-trails yet, I'll touch that up later and some light issues.

01 January 2005, 08:51 PM (

One very large enemy cruiser deploying fighters & bombers and targeting an intercepting frigat... yup.

01 January 2005, 11:06 PM (

I made the cruiser a bit bigger... :)
It's distance is still a few dozen km away, I want to portray it as huge.

The blue line that runs down the rocks is the edge of the EM-field that separates the hangar from space. (Still not 100% sure how to depict this)

Oh Conundrum, thanks again. Hope I won't disappoint you!

01 January 2005, 12:33 AM
hey art2, it's looking great! the addition of the big ships moves the eye attention back where it should be, good work!
That EM Field of the last picture...I don't know how could you make it, but for the moment it's not readable without your explanation, imo. oh, and the bomb falling... I think you should rotate it to be either horizontal or pointing slightly downwards...
...minor details...good luck with it

01 January 2005, 12:38 AM
Ola amigo! Can you see the finishline?

01 January 2005, 10:57 PM (

I decided to delete the frigat.
It was too busy :), I will add lots of little fighters leaving the mothership.

Next I will start the final coloring. Tightening things up, adding more detail, think about colors etc.

The end is near...

01 January 2005, 10:58 PM
Very distinct style. I think you have an edge over some of the other work here with your style. Im looking forward to the final image. Good luck my friend.

01 January 2005, 05:20 PM (

Left side of the canvas finished (I think :)

Hope to wrap this baby up tonight...

Voytek, thank you for the confidence!

01 January 2005, 05:30 PM
Good pic, very clean, good angle of vision perhaps you can added some lightsource ( more brigthness on the blast) and more shodows for biger contrast, it's just an idea, good work

01 January 2005, 12:21 PM (

Here's the final image.

I'd like to thank everyone who gave me comments, encouragements and support.
A really BIG thank you guys, it really kept me going.
Also thank you to CGnetworks for this challenge, I really had a blast doing it!

Tools: PainterIX, Photoshop7, Graphire3

01 January 2005, 12:42 PM
great final, i really like your unique style, some very soft and clean linework and shading coupled with an interesting composition made a wonderful painting. good luck

Conundrum, thanks. Glad you like my 'style'. You guys keep referring to this, I didn't even know I had my own style, haha! :D

MDN67, I forgot to thank you for your advise! Thanks mon ami!

Well, I've uploaded the tiff... hope everything arrived savely. I didn't see any maps or whatever where I could put the file, so I just uploaded it and hope for the best.

Great Job!! The attention to colour detail to the foreground is very impresive, it really sets this off. Good luck, and congrats on making it through!

If you haven't already, click Submit Entry, then Upload Final Image. After you've filled in all the blanks, page 3 should contain a thumb of your image. If it's there then you're done! Very nice job, btw. It feels good to be done early, doesn't it? :applause:

Oh man, looking through those wonderful pieces of the other entrants I noticed some posted at higher res than I thought was allowed. I kept myself to the 150kb limit...
And the resampling by CGNetworks really screws up my pic

Not that I heard any complaints yet from you guys, but there's so much detail that get lost . And I see all those hours I worked on it passing by , I just want to share... snif...

Please check this link ( if you'd like to get a better look (or the one in my sig)
