Hi!
This is my first challenge in cgnetworks i attend to take part of. I watched really closely last MachineFlesh challenge and I really enjoyed it! But i didnt dare to participate-it seemed to me like a "fight of giants" :)
But here is the description of my entry

Far in a distant future the interstellar spaceships are highly autonomous "living organisms". Thanks to highly developed nanotecnology, the spaceships are able to repair and develop independently, without human distruption. During long journeys, what might take decades, they collect all kind of tecnological information. Sometimes those vast "beings" land on planets and ship habitants make temporary colony. The mothership capsules itself and becomes inacessible. The upgrading may take years and after completing the upgrade, the ship will leave old "snake skin" behind. I'll try to seize the moment , when the ship starts the new cycle of its life.

Hi taavi! I also watched the recent challenges. I entered the alienware challenge, but after submitting my concept sketch, I became so busy doing schoolworks, and I was not able to finish the challenge. Hopefully, I can finsh it this time. For that, I welcome both of us in this challenge! Good luck! Honestly, I can alot of things happening in your sketch!

Thanx for support! :) :)
Actually the idea was ispired by Alstair Reynolds and his 2 books: Chasm City and Absolution Gap. Tthe novels are really hmmm... mindblowing. Asimov might look "oldfashioned" compared to Reynolds (sorry Asimov fans (including me :p)

Hi, nice modeling. The detail looks fine for now :). I would advise you to tell us more on how you do your modeling, that will help you in the long run ;). Your idea for an image doesn't look bad even more it looks great :). I'll just advise you to make the angle of view weirder(thats a bonus to an image). I'll keep an eye on you, don't hezitate to ask any questions. Good luck!

amazing modeling skills,
this is nice idea i only recommend you make the world look huge i mean why don\t you try to give this thing you made another construction like or bigger space giant ship to be on.

very nice job i think you will make something that equals giants here.

Hi! Thanx You all for supportive attitude :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Id like to upload another image, too but right now the internet connection is bad :argh:

Dimitris- I am planning instead of docking station some kind of "eggshell" where this ship is developed.

Designer2- the ship is meant to be really huge-compared anything else on final pic. I hope i can somehow make this trick

Borro- thanx for advices! I am not so shure about final compos camera angle- is the POV really low or maybe above the ship? Lets see..

Have a creative evening (or morning or midday or...:) ) !

Those little antennea are hinting at the scale of this ship. Probably will become more apparent as you add detail.

Great ship, I like the shape a lot. I could imagine those long curved pieces on the outside each eminating a glow of some sort and encapsulating the ship so that it looks like a shield or something.

very nice structure, I'm liking that. One crit though : maybe a bit too much in the eight radial symmetry. Some symmetry breakings (at least of the radial symmetry, maybe some bilateral symmetry somewhere) would give a nice touch, less artificial.

Keep it up!

VEry interesting design. Nice and clean which I like. The only tiny disapointment I am feeling is that it feels too symetrical, this design is screaming for some elements and components to make it more asymetrical. I am sure you have an idea you want to pursue, so I'll look forward to watching your progress.

Great work!

Here is the side view. Hope that U like :). I planned to add to all main parts some glowing complicated abstract patterns. So i am working on it right now

Virtuoso
11 November 2004, 09:35 PM
I think the modeling is very nice, pretty detailed, and a interesting design.......I think the abstract textures are good to a degree, but if you go too deep with them, they could take away from the modeling, the flow, the smoothness you have with your modeling............It's a fine line, but I am sure you will not cross it,and again this is a taste thing.......I like your entry,it's a nice start with alot of promise..................:arteest:

coCoKNIght
11 November 2004, 09:40 PM
Though I like the textures wery much I feel that they make the ship appear smaller as it's suposed to be. I think it's too plastic-like, too reflective, but depending on what you've got in mind to add in the future there might be no problem with that.

mv
11 November 2004, 10:07 PM
I like those textures.
I agree on both cocoknight's and Virtuoso's comments :

- it looks quite small ( maybe adding more detailled textures everywhere can give the level of detail we expect from very big objects - lighting will play a key role too)

- but the smoothness of your shapes was very interresting too, and in order to keep that flow visible, I think your texturing should be subtle and playing with specular/reflection maps and not be too contrasted (which would interfere with the lighting , thus the comprehension of volumes)

keep it up, this can lead to a seriously stunning picture !

Hi All! i really appreciate Your opinions and constructive critics :)

Virtuoso: i'll try to take care not to fall too deeply into texturing and forgetting the main goal :) This is my most complicated 3d-still pic so far and i am on my way of learning how to model & texture complicated forms and how to build scenes. I hope i found the way how to create more details with subd surfaces without getting completely mad :)
thank you for your kind words :)

cocoknight-the materials are in testing phase right now, i will try different ways :)

M@-thnx, the idea of playing around spec and reflection is worth of trying!

Deadly Force- U are right -this is just the beginning

Terraarc- Thnx! Btw. textures were made In illustrator. I created some layers with square shaped forms , combined some patterns , converted to photoshop and used the bmaps in bump and luminosity channel

Garyhanna- A. Reynolds work is really enjoyable! Have You read his other books too? Like Absolution Gap?

taavi
11 November 2004, 02:48 PM
plaguelord- Thanx!
The trick i sometimes use is photsoshop's unsharpen filter. It makes the rendered image look more sharper and crisper.
Right now i use common 3-point lighting system- 1 key / 1 rim and 1 fill light plus some additional ones for reflecting light from the ground.

1 Suggestion: maybe you shoud consider some detail very close to the camera for the final render, something creeping through the land or sometjhing, just to add a sense depth to the scene. Just an idea.

Thnx Sqibbit! :)

Some explanational words as well: The shape of the old helmet was intentional. Big flying helmet- why not! I tried not to follow ordinary spaceship design concept. I am not sure how i will succeed, but that is the result... Thanx to antigravitational engines, i have more "artisitic " freedom-no need for big rocket engines :)
Right now i have troubles with designing "middle class" spaceships- the shape should be original too and so far i have not found nothing that will satisfy me.
I gave rest to the mother ship for a while and i try to start schetcing the landscape soon.

Thank you for Your constructive critic and opinions And good luck

Woah ! cool model !
No crits so far...

About your question, I think that the more advanced your civilisation is the more you could add specularity and make it look shiny. But it depends of your final lighting too, because too much spec could destroy the nice shapes of your model...

Just an idea though, because I love dirty looking models in space...

:zepedro:
11 November 2004, 12:36 AM
Hi Taavi

I've been following your thread with great interest. :)
Good modeling style and cool design, also the shading is looking good now... IMO in first textures your ship was loosing the scale but with the last updates i see were you´re going. I love the way the textures are revealing the different layers of the ship and helping to see the "deepness" of it. I agree with the lighting being an important factor whe it comes to scale. Maybe a little haze at distance helps in giving away his large size.
As for reflection or not, you could try to make it a little reflective but not much, because it could make the shapes hard to "read"... maybe a blurred reflection, where the near volumes would appear a bit more sharp then the far ones, totally blurred, and thus, not bringing up too much reflection "noise" to the surfaces shading... my two cents though.
The Gissler looks great, i love the helmet shape.

Keep up the good work

Garyhanna: thnx for Your kind words :)

Deadly Force: Thnx! I am considering about using some transperent materials as well. And not so much specularity... Maybe in future we can use "intelligent materials" which can turn transparent, change shape and be as strong as steel...

:zepedro:: thank you for your encoragement and suggestions! The blurred reflexion is good idea. I have to play with Cinema shader setup-i dont know can i make such kind of textures.

vrhead: thnx :) i think that i am ab it slow in modelling-because i am still learning the tricks & stuff. And sometimes i have to remodel some stuff x2 or x3 to get good result...

Hi here is smal sample how i did the upper wing texture. Actualli its really simple. I Took snapshot of the wings wireframe and imported it into illustrator. I used it like blueprint. I have some cool patternfonts, which i used. Just choose the font, type for excample "AAAAAA", change kerning a bit closer, duplicate rows and voila U have cool pattern!

.... Then i copy&pasted the texture into photshop, made different layer setups and flattened those into separate bumpmaps, colourmaps and so on!

Hope U will have some use to it...

your mountains are very good! and whole environment seem well maid. models are top quality. My only remark now is the planet on the left. It seems to be just over the mountains, on the middleground, not in the backgound... maybe fog it more and hide some part of it... you can check how I maid my planets ni the background... quite similar case...

Late nights for us all it seems taavi............very nice update.I think your vessel/ship could be even closer to the camera. It looks very nice, and you should show it off even more so.....Nothing to hide here.......I think whats important here within this challenge is "pivotal moment" A "Sense of Awe".........and or action within a scene.......The size is a factor of course, but I think as long as you have enough grandness all will be well......But in the end the most important will be what I mentioned above and of course most importantly the actual eye candy.....modeling and textures, lighting etc.etc.......

Nice job here, nice overall plan and well done keep this up,your doing a very nice job......:arteest: :arteest:

I will work on metallic stuff-maybe some sphisticated bump-patterns to make those helmets look more real.

Hey Taavi,

I like what you have done, your image is coming along great. One comment though , you are going to add the mother ship in the centre of the scene so I am thinking this is the main focus of attention. Right now the engine of the ship on the left in your last image is really bright , I think it grabs my attention to much. Maybe you could rotate this ship a little so you could see more of the ship and a little less of the engine. Just an opinion you can think about.
Anyways great image so far.:)

Thanx for Your CGsupport ! :applause: :applause:
Good luck to everyone and may your computer processors will be really speedy tonight!

I Added again the story which is related to the picture:
Far in a distant future the interstellar spaceships are highly autonomous "living organisms". Thanks to highly developed nanotecnology, the spaceships are able to repair and develop independently, without human distruption. During long journeys, what might take decades, they collect all kind of tecnological information. Sometimes those vast "beings" land on planets and ship habitants make temporary colony. The mothership capsules itself and becomes inacessible. The upgrading may take years and after completing the upgrade, the ship will leave old "snake skin" behind. I'll try to seize the moment , when the ship starts the new cycle of its life.
