first need a villain to build an evil empire

10 October 2004, 08:59 PM (

And then the evil machinery...
Like an insectoid bio-mechanical spaceship.

10 October 2004, 09:02 PM
.Oh my ... What a thrilling theme for such an enormous contest.
I'm very happy, happy, happy, ...

10 October 2004, 09:19 PM
And then the evil machinery...
Like an insectoid bio-mechanical spaceship.
Oh wow, I had to look twice before I noticed the people at the bottom, massive scale.

10 October 2004, 09:30 PM
great start.. can wait to see what other things are going to sorround this massive ship thing you made :)

10 October 2004, 01:34 AM
Beautiful work! You're a very good character designer. I really like the second one, the machine. The people exiting from the bottom was the last part of it I noticed, it almost feels like an afterthought. Think about where the viewer is located in this scene, as if someone is standing around, taking a photo of this enormous thing... think of how to compose the page to demonstrate the scale of it. Great work!

10 October 2004, 05:39 AM
nice designing with that second one, I'm not fan of the "pose" of that ship, but guess it won't appear just like that in your final image so.. :)

10 October 2004, 07:11 AM
WyattHarris, Slav, Haman, Ranath
thanks a lot for your kind comments :)

[..I'm not fan of the "pose" of that ship, but guess it won't appear just like that in your final image...] You're totally right. For the moment, I'm just designing characters and mechas.

For the final composition I'll be using the "golden number" structure in a vertical sheet.

10 October 2004, 07:54 AM (

this is one of the basics from old great painters. Hope I'll get good results with it.

10 October 2004, 11:15 AM (

No opera without a magnificent princess to get out of the evil\'s hands.

Any ressemblance with some old painting is pure coincidence lol

10 October 2004, 01:47 PM (

I'm sending this pic quickly...
I'll take time to explain its role later...

10 October 2004, 02:08 PM
I like the first drawing, reminds me of my favorite comic book artist, moebius. Overall you have a humerous approach. A shrewd and creative way to go about the contest. I think it's good that the beautiful princess is questionably neither(beautiful or princess)

10 October 2004, 04:52 PM
Hahaha, there's some great stuff here. I wonder how you'll put it all together into a large scale but you have some interesting characters. Love the Mona Lisa parody :D

10 October 2004, 08:10 PM
Thank you gentlemen,

D pi : I hope I'll deserve the comparison with Moebius :)
Wiro : glad to see you got the point of it.

About the story : I'm still trying to translate it in a correct english .
It will be about Antique People coming back to defend the Realms of Arts against the evilish Insectoid Mechanical Bio Menace.

There will be lots of Space Statue Vessels and tons of Insectoid Ships, and a great Villain... and a superb Hero... and Mona Lisa as the ultimate Princess of the Universe !!! Oh... and great explosions and a big red vegetal Planet...

So I'll let my kids draw all this, take the sheets and send them for this contest.

Oops, just forgotten... no teams allowed for the competition... got to do it on my own

10 October 2004, 08:51 PM
astonishing very nice, i like the ship aswell keep it up :D

10 October 2004, 05:57 PM
The statue ship is a great design, nice lighting on it. I'm looking forward to seeing how you work all of this into a compostion.
10 October 2004, 06:04 PM
Wow dude! cool stuffs in here!
I like most the bio-mech, and the princess are so bizarre.
Keep'em coming.

10 October 2004, 06:10 PM
I too love the figurehead on the prow of the space ship. Very unique in this environment.

10 October 2004, 07:38 PM
sweet stuff !!
the mona lisa - erhm- princess , the villain ,
the ships , everything , seems like u been
having fun ! excellent !

11 November 2004, 06:14 PM
I like your style > especially the second one.
I´m looking forward to see your first composition.

11 November 2004, 06:57 PM
great work so far! really really interesting! maybe thing about how you'll arrange everything on the page next. good luck

11 November 2004, 09:04 PM
Thanks everybody

I've been very busy those 2 last weeks.... and a little bit lazy.
So I'm coming soon with a first composition.

11 November 2004, 09:11 PM (

First attempt to get the mood of the story. A little too draft. I'm not very statisfied with the perspective.
Anyway there's still 71 days left to get it better.

11 November 2004, 03:09 PM
Even if you think there may have little changes to bring to the perspective of your sketch, I think the contrast between the different plans work well. The weird feeling may come from those flying aliens... The higher one (the first one) should be taller than the second with the perspective, etc.

Good luck with your work!

11 November 2004, 07:06 PM
I really dig your character designs, they are all very interesting. The tones of the grey scale works well in the composition, the foreground stands out, while the background falls back. I'm really looking forward to your color compositions and how u fit ur characters in your world. Goodluck!

11 November 2004, 07:31 PM
Your concept sketches are awesome. I can see how you can work a lot of bugs out with doing them that detailed. I definitely like the last one submitted the best!

11 November 2004, 07:42 PM
Hi!! welcome to the hyperspace!

I like a lot the last one idea! keep going, and have fun :bounce:

Bonne chance!

11 November 2004, 09:59 PM (

One other research.

11 November 2004, 10:11 PM
Kraull, Anime_J, adrixwha : much thanks for your feedback:love:

By now, I think I don't have a really satisfying picture. I have to work on the real story.
I'll keep the flying aliens, the statue-vessels and the insectoid giant ship to build the opponent forces in the background. Alien Mona Lisa and her prince (to be designed...) will stand in the foreground. The villain will be placed elsewhere. ...Maybe a new version of Romeo and Juliet ?

... to be continued.:)

11 November 2004, 10:13 PM
Lovely images with really diverse and original designs. Good luck.

11 November 2004, 11:04 PM
Geez your style is really out there ! Its truly wierd and disturbing but in the good way :)
Keep it up

11 November 2004, 11:56 PM
That last one is my fav. Very, very cool. The designs are fresh and unique. The have almost a feel of hard 70's sci-fi (a good thing), but updated for today. Very cool.

11 November 2004, 10:55 PM (

thanks for your kind comments.

12 December 2004, 10:40 PM (

Wake up...

12 December 2004, 10:50 PM (

So. Here's the story written in my poor english.

The NDviidian Civilisation has discovered the secret of eternal life through a mechanization process. Princess JoW-LiETTE should have been wired to the Imperial Ship for her 20th birthday. But, RoM-IO, prince of the RRaDiohn people has planned to take her off the NDviidian planet and get married to her, in a galaxy far far away. Everything would have been fine if their secret love hasn't been revealed.
The scene takes place when the runaway lovers are being chased by the NDviidian guards.

12 December 2004, 11:01 PM (

A colour test to get the mood and textures

12 December 2004, 01:19 AM
Good work! I like your style and the way you've painted the "princess" character. Nice perspective on the last sketch!

12 December 2004, 10:43 AM
I like your style, tne choice of color is very good

J'aime bien ton style de dessin, les couleur données à tes personage son excellentes, j'attend la finalisation de ton projet

My 2d challenge page (

12 December 2004, 09:46 PM (

Thanks Lovliebutterfly and MDN67.
The last sketch wasn't (to my opinion) not enough "grand". So I decided to draw a new one, depicting the event after the princess has been captured and tied to the survival machinery.

Wow, c'est pas évident de jongler entre anglais et français ;-)

12 December 2004, 09:51 PM (

Thanks to meeting at the office, I can get some time to draw quick sketches.
This sketch shows a close up of the same action. There's a little "error" in the perspective. I'll correct it and add somme spider-tower guards if I decide to choose to go on with this sketch.

12 December 2004, 11:24 PM
c'est marrant, je trouve ton croquis trés ... euh... phallique... Mais bon, ça réussit bien à Giger, alors c'est plutôt encourageant...
Moreover, it seems there will be a lot of details and things to see in you work. I really would like to see more.

12 December 2004, 03:56 PM
this is looking good... i wonder what would happen if you tried rotating the composition 15 degrees or so counter-clockwise? right now it seems as though the diagonals are conflicting with teh vertical on the left, which seems to make the image appear stagnant/ lack visual movement.

12 December 2004, 04:49 PM
Thx pr73 & Hillartsympho,
you're totally right Pr73 that there's some phallic "suggestion" but it wasn't really intentional.
Maybe some reminiscence of male interest in SCI-FI pictures. Thank yo ufor thinking about GIGER, he's one my favourite painter. Anyway there would be more horizontal structures to show the machinery and then attenuate the sexual impression.
Hillartsympho : I agree with you, this picture is too static. I'm working on another picture depicting the same moment, but it will be seen in a more dynamic perspective.

12 December 2004, 07:39 PM
Great progress, I think your concepts are great. A very unique style also, which is a refreshing to see in this challenge :)

12 December 2004, 11:09 PM (

Emerging from christmas...

12 December 2004, 12:34 AM
I've got the feeling that this is going to be sensational! I like the textures on the moon/planet...keep up with the good work! I really appreciate your style! :bounce:

01 January 2005, 10:33 PM (

Hi everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR
May all your wishes come true
Thanks Lovliebutterfly. I promise I'll take time to throw an eye to your work.
- unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable writing crits in english.

01 January 2005, 10:40 PM
I love this new composition.... what wonderful imagination! Really looking forward to seeing what happens in the FG and how you evolve your palette from this vibrant base.

Great stuff!

01 January 2005, 10:44 PM
Man, you got style, mate. What a beutifull submission, this is.

As I haven´t read your thread, only watched this last submission, I have no clue what is really going on, but lots of style, really!

Happy new year

01 January 2005, 11:38 PM
Nice stuff. I agree with cgkrusty, this is your best composition thus far.

01 January 2005, 10:40 PM (

HI and a lot of thanks for your appreciation :-)
Here are the people coming to save the princess.

01 January 2005, 11:04 PM (

Just to see the actual scale of the rescue team

01 January 2005, 08:56 AM
i really like your entry! it's look grand! but maybe u need more variation of color ! good work!!

01 January 2005, 11:53 PM (

Some tweaking

01 January 2005, 05:04 AM
Wow thats cool, feels very "black light" friendly. Has a retro Roger Dean feel to it (whether intentional or not). I like the lighter version, but its too light and the dark one is too dark. Maybe a median?

01 January 2005, 09:55 PM
I like the style of your draw, and the choice of color

01 January 2005, 10:53 PM (

Here's the detailed foregound.
The creation process is quite chaotic ;-p

01 January 2005, 11:09 PM (

Yep, the whole picture before final coloring. Thank you a lot for viewing it

01 January 2005, 11:14 PM

Merci, je suis très flatté. En fait, comme je lis pas mal de BD, je pense qu'inconsciemment je suis influencé par CAZA, Moebius, Terada... et par Pink Floyd pour le titre (provisoire).

Thx, ... In fact, I read many comics, so I may be influenced in some ways by CAZA, Moebius, Terada.... and by Pink Floyd for the title.

01 January 2005, 11:47 PM (

Just a small update

01 January 2005, 09:25 AM
Excellent work Emmanuel. That is some serious illustration you have going on there. Very nice work!

01 January 2005, 09:09 PM (

Thanks everybody for your kind comment.
I\'ve shown al the paintings and drawings to wife (she sleeps at night when I work for this contest). \"Where are huge ships and the explosions, and all that sort of things ? Mhhh ?\"... Crap, that\'s right the compos seems too much static and non-opera grandesque. So I decided to start a new project featuring the same design but in a more dynamic way.
Here it is... I hope I\'ll have enough time to finish it. Come on. Let\'s rock and roll.

01 January 2005, 09:18 PM (

To be continued...

01 January 2005, 09:20 PM (

Still working on it.

01 January 2005, 11:59 PM (

Still in progress... but going to sleep

01 January 2005, 12:54 PM
Hi spacenail,

the current image composition devinetley much better and I hope you´ll finish this one right in time.

01 January 2005, 03:36 PM (

Going on...

01 January 2005, 03:37 PM
Thanks Fahrija I hope this too

01 January 2005, 03:54 PM
hey snail ! I dunno how but i missed your thread , great work as usual,

hurry hurry and get it finsihed !

01 January 2005, 01:14 AM
Ditto, great job, get it finished. Coming along nicely.

01 January 2005, 03:42 AM
I like the style and colour scheme of your work. Its got a good blend between the future and the ancient times. Keep it coming.

01 January 2005, 11:38 PM (

Thanks mates for your support.
As usual, I'm not a novelist in this thread. Lazyness, lack of time, ashamed of my poor english... Ouch, stop complaining on me.

01 January 2005, 11:47 PM
Hi spacenail,

welcome! I´m also new in this thread. No problem at all. :)
But you do a good job and your development is fast. So do not complain about yourself. :)

You´ve established very much light. That gives a good impression about the atmosphere. Maybe you could make the shadow-parts darker to increase the kontrast.

Keep up the good work

01 January 2005, 11:58 PM
Hi again,

Sorry, my english is worst :) Now I understand what you´ve written. Forget the first line I´ve written above :)

Good luck

01 January 2005, 11:59 PM (

Keeping going on... Polishing, cleaning, gling gling...

01 January 2005, 12:15 AM
Very nice rendering. I like the composition, and the lighting, but I feel lost in all those details. If you defined them more with lights and darks, they might read a little better. Just a thought, not too sure if that would help or not. Either way, great job!

01 January 2005, 12:13 AM (

You're right Mister West.THank you. There's still some problems due to contrasts. I'm working on it... and adding some details.

01 January 2005, 05:30 AM
Nice very very nice i like it

01 January 2005, 10:26 PM (

Almost done... tweaking the picture

01 January 2005, 11:00 PM
Oh man, this was fast! Great work!

01 January 2005, 11:15 PM

thanx... I think it's worth sleeping 5 hours a night:eek:

01 January 2005, 11:49 PM
Holy crap man! This is awesome! Great work.

01 January 2005, 12:14 AM (

Going to sleep

01 January 2005, 01:59 PM (

Updating with a new background

01 January 2005, 05:29 PM
'Snail - this is just looking fantastic! You managed to turn around this new layout incredibly fast! I love the design of everything. I like some of the changes that you've made in saturation - like the orange creature thing on the upper left, but i felt that the other creature - the one on the right doing the pushing - receded more into the background when it was a bit more detaurated, as in the previous post. And now the bluew foreground element in the lower left is SO saturated that it immediately draws my eye there, and away from the main focus of the piece. But the rendering itself is just goureous, nice work! Good luck with the last finishes...

01 January 2005, 06:16 PM (

Thanks Walrus.
Good luck to you and to every one who visited my thread (and sometime posted in it;-).

Here's the final image.

I'll be without a computer during the days to come...Snif. No last minute tweaking to come.

Good luck again to everyone

--- this sounds like I'll be abducted tonight by some cone-headed aliens...
Hope it won't be.

01 January 2005, 06:17 PM
Always an exceptionnel look for this pic, very originaly with a big choice of color correctly used, good work, and good luck

01 January 2005, 06:48 PM (

Just completing the submitting process...

01 January 2005, 10:53 PM
This has turned out really nice! Good choice of colors. I also agree with Walrus about the left corner that's a bit too saturated. But i don't think you'll be making any corrections at this stage. I enjoyed watching your thread throughout the competition! I really like your style - fluid and watercolor effect! Good luck!

01 January 2005, 08:08 PM
walrus thanks guys

Best of best of luck for the judging to come:thumbsup:

01 January 2005, 09:15 PM
BHRAGJKKK!! !!! i dunno what's goin on! but i like the pic

just seen all your sketches... they were all very cool

weird pic... to me it looks like dat alien robothingy stole
the princess' hand bag but once he touched it , it went
bad and ugly . So now the princess is on the view phone,
telling her father , the king, what just happened, when
the angry monster returns and pours the content of the
uglified handbag on the king

am i right ?

congrats on finishing the pic

01 January 2005, 08:48 AM
LOL... LOL...LOL...LOL...

Dear Squibbit,

you really deserve "THE FIRST GRAND PRIZE for making the others spit their coffe on their screen while reading Squibbit's comments"!:bounce:
This is the best interpretation I would ever do about this pic. AH AH AH

Thanks a lot.

Now, whereas I'm quite unsatisfied with the finishing and story telling, it was a real double challenge to me : starting over from scratch within a week and trying to complete the competition.

All this finished to decide me to start a comics with some of the designs I've posted here.
I'll start a thread about it on CGTALK when I've enough matter of subject.

---learning english lessons would be a good idea, too---

01 January 2005, 11:19 AM
Great job Emmanuel. You did an awesome bit of work here. Congradulations of completing it and GL in the finals!
