Its looking damn good, nice topology.
One thing i suggest is bring that count down, im working with 2k4 as well and our player models are at the most right now 3000 tris (i think). Unless of course this is a single player game =)

Great for a first model!! Really great. There are a ton of wasted polys in there, but you'll figure out what's needed for clean deformations, and what can be pulled off with textures.
Also, for clean deformations as the character rotates the torso, you'll be better off with edge loops that travel all the way around the torso. Right now, you've got a couple of 3-to-1 interfaces by the kidneys. Those may or may not deform very well, you'll just have to test it and see.
Finish the head! Can't wait to see where this is going.
