This is a final side view on the MAERTH ships concept. I'm struggling to make time to finalize my entry, it doesn't look promising though. I'll try my best till the end. There are so many great entries! I wish I had more time :( Does anyone know if I can change my entry a 3D entry?

All natural resources close to depletion, large numbers of species—flora and fauna— extinct. A world wide effort for Earth's survival. The clock was ticking and time was running out, quickly.

For the past 50 years a Group of Scientist and great Minds from around the world have been working tirelessly on a plan. Research that in the past had been classified as a lesser priority were moved to the top the list.

Extensive research in new propulsion systems have lead to the discovery and creation more affordable space traveling capabilities. This enabled us to revisit the Moon and reach Mars in search of a laundry list of alternatives, amongst them, raw materials, fuel, habitat, hope.

After years of planning, studies and evaluations of every possible scenario, the results were drastic and unexpected.

...the only hope for human suvival is not on Earth but on Mars. The last phase of this plan was called, Maerth.

September 5, 2220, the day of the great migration...

This is going to be my inspiration, I just wrote this scenario as my plot. Hopefully I'll start sketching tonight. Wish me luck. cLos

This first round of sketches focuses on the vehicles mostly. I threw a quick doodle to see how it look on the greatness of space. More sketches to come...

I really like the lighting in the last sketch, definnitely have a certain mood to it.

...although I'm not sure that I'm going to go with that one—maybe I'm looking at it too much. I have been sketching my fingers off trying to find something that makes me go hmm...that'll do it. I think I made good progress tonight with the sketches I posted tonight and a few more that I just finished. I'll post them tomorrow—or later today—I'm dead tired 3:18am. Yikes! Go to go to bed. Thanks for your comments :)

The following are designs for various vehicles and transports that will me flying around the scene. the original sketches are propably 3" each. I'll work on new sketches for the scene tonight. Enjoy!

This one is a heavylifter—for those of you who are into aviation—imagine a C-5 Galaxy times 5 or 6. Yeah...pretty freaking big. Having a great time! Look like everyone else is as well.

Hmm... how the City Mover works? He carries the human population only or the whole cities (with buildings, etc.)? :)

At the time of the move, strict rules were enforced regarding what stays and what goes. So families were grouped and assigned specific quarters based on pre-existing guidelines...
Priorities have changed quite a bit in this time. Material possesions were not a primary concern, survival is. Basically imagine.... Earth-is-crumbling-under-you-and-we-need-to-leave-NOW, kind of situation. The evacuation takes place a year before thigns turn sour,—really sour— to a void the worse case scenario...

Vigilant is more like a Patrol Unit/ Security.

Vulture is more like a military deployment vehicle, it replaces the helicopter-type vehicle. Also used for Reconnaiss.ance

The Hungger is a Cargo vehicle. It's name derived from the way "cargo cannisters" are fitted under it. It's a huge vehicle.

This is huge bus, public transport basically. It hops from station to station, carrying passengers back and forth from one to the other.

This is the first concept with a bit a color, trying to create a mood. Needs work, is not alive yet, I mean to communicate a better sense of grandeur a sesnse of how titanic these structures are. A space city...

I think this concept has a better feel for what I'm trying to capture. The view is from one of the window walls of the "City Movers" looking out on the scenery. On the bottom there is a family who recently just arrived looking out. I'll make a bigger sketch with more detail. This one feels like it could be a final approach.

Artie — Thanks, This last sketch I feel very strongly for the more I look at it. I think it play much better the scale factor, I thinmk the fact that is vertical helps a lot too.

selvagem — Thanks, I still have a some pieces of the puzzle to figure out, regarding some types of ships/vessels that I still have to develop. I must say that the last sketch i posted (vertical), I think looks very promising. I'm going to try to make a tighter sketch over the weekend. Don't promise anything since I'll be in the at work all weekend long for sure. One thing's for sure...I'm having a great time! :)

I agree. The new scene works much better with the designs involved, but it makes the image very linear and could work against you if your not carefull. I hope you plan to give it alot of visual depth.

Literally. It's going to be all about using atmospheric lighting and scale. I'm putting some rough color on the sketch to get a better sense of depth, I'll try to post it this weekend.
I wish I had more time! I'll looking into cloning myself, that should help...

OK, I took some of my remaining energy tonight to put some color on the sketch. I decided to put a reflection on the window of the second tier. It would be a great effect to achieve, it means more work. I'm still not sold on it. What do you guys think? The overall effect is much better than the first sketch...way better.

I reckon the reflection is an awesome idea! Maybe make it more obvious where that reflection is coming from... maybe put some of the onderside of the second tier at top of frame...

I think it's important to depict characters in a space opera scene. Although spaceships and star systems are cool, without that human element, you lose a lot of the emotional appeal that connects to your audience--which are all humans.

clos: The city movers could be near maybe. Creating mass of ships together, like city in the city. It might by more impressive, I think :)

This is definitely the sketch I'll be working on for the Challenge.

phyle It sure needs more detail, you're idea is certainly the way to go. What I will probably end up doing is adding some structural details on the walls that better comunicates what's being reflected. Of course once the people are sketched/rendered in more detail should get the point accross as well.

Lunatique Definitely! That's why I decided to change the angle, aside from adding a better sense of scale, it needed the human element. In the previous sketch the human element was barely visible.

Artie I could definetly bring some of bigger ships closer together to create that skyscraper effect let me give it a try....

Thanks to EVERYONE for their feed back it's really really helpful. I'll keep you guys updated. Hopefully I'll be ready to start a final line drawing soon, maybe this weekend!

some great stuff here - I espically like your maerth transport sketch. I think you need to add some human interest, but it can be difficult keeping teh epic feel at same time
