Latest Update: Concept Sketch: dummy
This is the dummy of what it will look like. Could use some pointers on how to make the armada look grand by posing the ships

Maby I'm in over my head, entering both challanges, but since I'm not entering expecting to win anything, I'm guessing the learning experience will be rewarding enough.
So, This is a piece I will call "The Sacrifice". It's a tale of the small induvidual that changed the future for an entire galaxy.
After many years of war between two species, the Mifras and the Vuntarians, a suggestion was made to put the first born child of each of the rulers in an escapepod and send them into the sun as a sacrifice and an end to the war that had ravaged the two planets. The rulers on Mifra and Vuntaria agreed to do this and peace spread thru the galaxy. Niether species would ever forget the names of Bis Mar de Fuug and Liz Donii, the daughters who willingly gave their lives to bring peace to the galaxy, thus becoming the mothers of all.

Ok, so I started reading the FAQ (Recommend it, really) and realised that it's suppose to be epic on a large scale. As in, cities, armies, worlds, etc. Not individuals. To save my original concept I will add a bunch of large spaceships, standing in "salut" in honour of the brave daughters, Bis Mar de Fuug and Liz Donii. Probably wont have time to do that today. In effect the pod with the women will be considerably smaller in the new concept.

Bah, who am I kidding. I can't wait until toworrow for this. Here it is. Not very detailed, but you get the "epic" of it, right?
10 October 2004, 07:06 AM
Different hull types that I will later use both for the 3d and 2d challange. Maby with slight changes.
10 October 2004, 09:07 AM
This will be the main ship in the armada that will honour the daughters. The other ship will be the Crawler.

Hey Zem! I like the idea of 'The Sacrifice' and I think the fleet in the scene will give it that epic touch. Also like the ship designs, esp. the 'Whale' side view.
As they are different species, it would be interesting to see significantly different designs for each of the sides.
I'm sure sketch group has been good practise for us :)

Layout 1 of the Mifra ships
10 October 2004, 05:59 AM
More of a floating city then a ship the Mifra Osiris Class Ship can carry a population of 50 000, some of which never will leave the ship during their entire life span of 170 years

A simple sketch to determin what type of clothing the women will have. I thought I make the cermonial gowns different for them, as the spaceships don't look the same. Two different cultures if you will.
10 October 2004, 06:04 AM
First modeling wip of the Vuntarian vessle, the Whale. It has changed somewhat fron the original concept. It simply didn't work out in modeled form.
10 October 2004, 06:06 AM
The second of the two Vuntarian vessles.
10 October 2004, 06:08 AM
You're really pounding along there zem! Nice clean designs.
I like the concepts of the daughters, especially the costume design on the left.
10 October 2004, 06:33 AM
Yeah, it's a bit of a bulk post. I wanted the daughters clothes to look really old so I borrowed some design traits from human old age, medievel and a sort of ancient egytian. The cermonial gown is of course something that comes from an old tradition with both the Mifras and the Vuntarinas, but will still be reflected in the spaceship design. Did I succeed? Which daughter belong to which ship? Do you know, or do you need a lifeline?:)
10 October 2004, 06:41 AM
The aquatic animal look of the ships is a great idea, will you add some others ?
10 October 2004, 11:08 AM
Thanks Chug. The ships that will be in the final comp, are The Whale, The Crawler, The Isis(It says Iris in the layout sketch, which is wrong) and the Osiris.
I have thought about adding the Stingray, but I don't think there is enough time for me to model everything well enough. The Hammer is just ugly, and I will not use that.
I'm also thinking about changing the comp so the daughters will be in their pod in the middle, and the Vuntarian and Mifra vessles will be on either side. It might prove to be to static.
10 October 2004, 02:07 PM
I'm just making the basic shapes of the ships so I can make a mock-up of the final image. So they are really low poly. Also, if pressed for time, I can hide the low-poly ships in the 'back' of the image, with a fairly large texture map. That way I can create a big fleet without millions of polys.
10 October 2004, 03:35 PM
This is a different story line, liking it! Will you be modeling the other ships? I like the small, fast looking stingray and the military-like hammer head (would this be military?) which may be used to police the whole event...
Keep those creative juices flowing! Some really good concepts here
EDIT!! okay then I read your other post.. no stingray or hammer  ahh well I'm sure it'll still look cool! :p
10 October 2004, 01:47 PM
Started to add details. I'm thinking that I can get away with making the main body's windows and other stuff with a bumpmap.
Sorry to dissapoint you M477. If I have a lot of time over sometime I'm hoping to add the Stinger on the landing bays of the Whale.
10 October 2004, 01:54 PM
Keep up the good work. I'm a firm believer in getting away with whatever you can, with whatever technique you can, as long as it looks good!

Nice improvement with your modelling .... when more detaill more realistic ....
Continue the good work

The first girl.
11 November 2004, 08:49 AM
The two girls in the sacrafical pod. Got all the basics down now, so I going to do a dummy composition next.
11 November 2004, 07:59 AM
Tried out some colors on the aquatic ships. I wanted the look of the deep water fish, that glow in the dark.
11 November 2004, 06:32 PM
Now, that's a cute ship! If you want to make it look more like a fish, try to add some fish scale structure to it. Perhaps a slight bump map and some specularity. Also some transparency in the fins could look good.
Keep up the good work - good luck!
11 November 2004, 08:30 AM
Now, that's a cute ship!
oh no, I was going for manly, butch and macho! :)
Great comment, I was going for a less serious approach, since the whole scene is serious enough. I wanted a contrast between the look and the story. The ships will be colourful and pirky(?)
I should have mentioned that this is not the finished colouring. The fins will be solar panels and I will make them golden. The scalelooking bumpmap will be coming up.
11 November 2004, 09:03 AM
I' thinking of using this composition instead.
11 November 2004, 09:05 AM
The Whale, colour, no bump or spec to talk about.
11 November 2004, 09:07 AM
This is the dummy of what it will look like. Could use some pointers on how to make the armada look grand by posing the ships. Remember that I haven't placed the opposing armada on the right, yet.
11 November 2004, 09:04 AM
Due to other obligations I will not be able to finish the 3d challange. See ya!
