A poster for the galaxy fair 4040.

10-19-2004, 02:25 PM
Just playing with the idea of an advert for or scene at the Galaxy Fair, the futuristic version of the World Fair that was massive event and really popular at the turn of last century. Lots of scope for a bit of fun...don't worry about the doom III monster look alike...he'll go in the next concept.

I hope I can finish this one :)

Good luck for everyone's entries...can't wait to see all the great work!!

10-20-2004, 02:58 PM
Nice idea to have a poster for the Galaxy Fair, the challenge will be in converying a real sense of scale and gravity with the poster. Good luck!

10-21-2004, 12:16 PM
Thanks for the comments phillsmiff, and I agree so will go for a scene of the fair itself (panoramic perhaps? not sure of size limits).

Still want to design a poster, but will instead have it projected on a planet surface as a banner.

Here's an updated concept of what i'm thinking...

still not so grand, but a start.

Please submit all images here. (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/submit_entry.php)

Judges will be looking at CGNetworks pages to review your progress.
Thanks. :D

OK, thanks Kirt.

2nd rough concept, starting to think about the 'grand' scale of things and composition. Still a way to go, but it's a start!

10-22-2004, 08:32 AM
wow, talk about advertisment. Cool idea. Like the concept and the depth in the image. Good luck!

Another composition sketch. Have added some depth to the ground plane, hopefully increasing the scale of the scene. Each statue will depict a figure from the history of each century of civilisation. Giant trees feature at the base of the monument. The sign projected on the planet will be a subtle decorative design.

10-22-2004, 08:59 AM
Thanks zem. Will refrain from including sponsorship by a well known food chain on the sign...although the planet will be a gas giant, so it might be appropriate ;)

hi drawMonger, nice to see that you're participating... your concepts are of great promise...
i'm looking forward to see your further work.
good luck

I like that you're drawing your idea from the past and modernizing it. Have you given any thought to the "conflict" part of the story? All those inventions, experiments, specimens could be the target of a galactic spy. Great composition in your last drawing -- I like the line of glass domes very much!

10-23-2004, 04:40 AM
SalamanderCoral, thanks for the kind words...this will be my first non-sketch, hopefully finished art work of this type, so hope to be able to do a reasonable job. Colour scares me, but will have to tackle that when the time comes.

Yes, I've been thinking about that. On the one hand, It would be nice to show a peaceful scene where the art and cultural achievements of a high civilisation would be enough to evoke the grand elements required. However, An attack from an alien race or King Kong like monster reeking havok have also come into my mind. For now, i'll go with the first idea and if that turns out too static, I'll add a little drama. Thanks for raising the issue :)

There will be lots of space and air craft flying around and sitting on the docking bays. This is a concept for a massive cruise ship.

10-23-2004, 03:54 PM
Man I totaly dig the Space Convention Idea! Keep it up and good luck!

10-23-2004, 04:49 PM
The initial fair sketch (not the advertisment, but the high view of the fair) is my preferred! It looks very good, but even the second sketch has some potential...dunno where you will go whit those :D

10-23-2004, 05:49 PM
i like your ideas so far. your sketches have a nice grand feeling and detail to them. i look forward to seeing more of your progress

10-23-2004, 07:51 PM
drawmonger, I like the idea of the galaxy fair and the projection on the planet is a great idea!
I like your second drawing the most, maybe you could add some more domes/buildings/tents, where people would go into to see whatever may be showing at the fair like in the first drawing, I mean, if all those cristal domes are for statues (and it will look very good), then the only building where all the fair will be shown is the tower?

anyway, good luck!

Another craft that will feature in the scene.

10-24-2004, 07:13 AM
Borro, Erebus74, jal, elmasfeo: thanks for the feedback, appreciate it :) I will do some more concept scketches for the composition before starting to work on the scene...will try and incorporate some of the layout in the second one into the high view of the first.

elmasfeo: the idea with the crystal domes (i like the crystal idea, thanks!) is that they will contain the actual exhibitions. The statues will be positioned at the front of each dome and there will be other structures around the place too.

The story is that the fair will be celebrating 8000 years of civilization and the history of human expansion. There will be a dome for each century (so the statues will represent a figure from each period of history). We wont be able to see all of the domes, but will try and make the layout like a '+' shape with the monument in the center.

Unlike the world fairs in our past, these fairs will each last for 100 years (there are a *lot* of people to visit it) so will try and add some notion of strength and permanence to the structures.

10-24-2004, 07:13 AM
What an original idea with plenty of scope. :) great stuff

10-24-2004, 07:25 AM
nice, everything's well planned. No do some physics calculations and see if you could build those! No, really, it's good to have plans so everything works logically in your final image. I'll wait to see more sketches from you

10-24-2004, 08:33 AM
Thanks unitstudio!

Ranath: LOL, well i plugged in all of the figures into the universal structure design formula and got the answer '42'...so it must be OK ;)

10-25-2004, 06:52 AM
Did someone say 42?
Great ship designs drawMonger, can't wait to see them in the final concept.

another take. Added a military sentinel craft to add some interest.

10-26-2004, 08:27 PM
Hey, hey, there's still one frontseat left.
Ok, I'm settled now.

You can go on with the show now.
(Your 2nd comp sketch looks very promising btw!)

10-27-2004, 08:49 AM
Eh eheh I doubt they would put a military ship on the advertising, maybe a bit too intimidating...maybe is better a small writing as: Security guaranteed by Auron's Militia!

I work for ads... :P :P :P

10-27-2004, 02:42 PM
Art2 and Erebus74, thanks for stopping by :)

I think i will play more with the second concept and, as for the military ship, consider it gone!

Been doing a little reseach on images from the various world's fairs...and found this poster:

Love it!

10-28-2004, 11:26 AM
Wow, that poster really rocks and has some inspiration I think!

This is a 2D entry. I just did a little block modeling to try and get a better feel for the composition. In the end, the one that worked best for me was very close to my second scene sketch, so I think I'll go with that. Any advice would be appreciated :)

10-28-2004, 08:06 PM
Man your last image is the best composition wise with a lovely dramatic view.
Good luck!

Changed the aspect ratio and added some colour ideas.

10-30-2004, 10:25 AM
I liked your landscape version rather than this portrait one, I think it helped to the perspective and was more dramatic in my opinion...
your "concept 2.0.4" really rocks! I like the position of the planet, looks like a huge and omnipresent being, observing the scene from above...

10-30-2004, 11:30 AM
I also like 2.0.4 better, especially the terraces and trees.

10-30-2004, 12:18 PM
screamingwing, elmasfeo and Art2: Thanks for the feedback! I think i'll take your advice and go with 2.0.4 . The thing that knida bugs me about that one is the lack of 'white space'...it just seems a little cluttered...so what i'll do is add a couple of cm to the top and get rid of the small planet/moon and see how that goes. Thanks again.

11-09-2004, 03:38 PM
I agree completely... 2.0.4 is the way to go. I don't think it needs more white space. If you want to add a cm or 2 to the top, ok...but I think you need to keep in that small moon for balance. I love how this is developing! Way to go!! :bounce:

11-10-2004, 08:18 AM
hey robinayles! Thanks for the feedback :) I will keep the moon in as I agree that it does need something there.

11-23-2004, 11:36 PM

11-24-2004, 10:52 AM
soon robinayles...very soon...perhaps even too soon ;)

11-24-2004, 06:55 PM
soon robinayles...very soon...perhaps even too soon ;)
Does that mean NOW? :wip:

11-25-2004, 03:35 AM
I like the concept in post #32 the best so far

01-12-2005, 04:42 PM
drawMonger, where are you?!? Don't tell me you've thrown in the towel.

Unfortunately, i didn't get anyfurther on this...glad you are still in the game though :)

01-13-2005, 12:03 AM
That's a shame Drawmonger, 'cause you had a great concept.

01-13-2005, 12:09 AM
Thanks Art2...I'm watching your thread and glad that its comming along so well. looking forward to the end result.
