Alexandre Bonvalot has entered the Grand Space Opera 2D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Final Image: The final image (

The same as the "final color" image.
Sorry, nothing new.

10-19-2004, 08:07 AM (

A very draft and rough sketch for the mothership (sorry, but space opera means for me a ship fleet!!)

10-19-2004, 08:18 AM (

Scheme of the "uss vanquish" mothership

10-19-2004, 08:33 AM
wow interesting spece ship design !

10-19-2004, 10:51 AM
I can really feel it weight in space, lumbering between stars. Looking forward for
more pics.

Johan out!

10-19-2004, 12:28 PM
Nice rough and elevations there starbuck. Looking foward to watching this develop.

10-19-2004, 11:10 PM
nice design.. :) best of luck to you in the 3d category.

10-21-2004, 07:59 AM (

A very "long" sketch of the "spear" fighters carried by the mothership.
I'm not very proud of the colors...

10-21-2004, 08:22 AM
Nice, I really love the style of these sketches, especially the last on of the spear fighter. Really reminds me of the Homeworld 2 concept work. Very slick!

10-21-2004, 09:07 PM
I very much like the design. Even the color is good. My only problem is that I don't think it looks symmetrical. The ring on the starboard side looks like it is tucked under the top, while the one on the port side is quite a bit more outboard. Probably something you'll adjust in a subsequent render.

I think what I like most about it is it's novelty and it's "buildability". That is, it would be a beautiful 'ship as a scratchbuilt plastic model.

10-22-2004, 08:04 AM (

A very first research for the mood and athmosphere. A first atempt too for the scenery.

10-22-2004, 08:06 AM
Woa! Very nice. Wonderful golden feeling... keep up the good work!

10-22-2004, 08:30 AM
Hi Starbuck, the architecture's looking great, and I love the composition with the shadow cast by the ship. I will be watching this thread closely. Looking good so far!

10-22-2004, 09:15 AM
Very good Starbuck. The cast shadows on the foreground elements create some good contrast. The insect-like swarm looks great, too. And the green light is also looking insect-like. The only thing that does not look to fit right now is the perspective of the "donut" in the middle.
Looking really good.

10-22-2004, 09:25 AM
omg, beautiful!

colours are awesome

10-22-2004, 09:35 AM
that is mad! just for a concept drawing aswell

10-22-2004, 09:48 AM
very nice colours there. I think it would be great if you could play with more extreme darkness and lightness. Especially for the lower part of the city, you could have it dark in contrast to the green light.

10-22-2004, 10:12 AM
What an eye candy! Very impressive concept! The color float really smooth but some more variations would look nice.....maybe some light cyan in the far sky :)

10-22-2004, 11:27 AM
wow those are some strong concepts

I like the fighter concept most, but environment is good too. Shouldn't the green light be spread wider? Though the center part should have strongest light like you have. I'm not too sure about that but do a bit of research if you think it's worth of it.

10-22-2004, 11:57 AM
Many thanx dudes!
i'll gather your remarks and i'll update my picture with.
Thank you for such good remarks.
Good luck to all of you guys!

10-22-2004, 12:32 PM
I like you stile of drawing! And concept too!

Good luck!:)

10-22-2004, 12:47 PM
great style for works of shipes!! I realy like it!

I like it the color of your the second sketch! The green raylight foncusd
the eye on the illustration! Good continuation!
I keep on eye of you!:)

10-22-2004, 02:12 PM
I really like the most recent one, but the lower architecture seems to lack a lot of the detail seen higher up. Nice work, though.

10-23-2004, 11:09 AM

That last concept is stunning!! The light and shadow, colours and sense of scale area all so perfect for this challenge!!

I love the beam of light (maybe it could be even stronger and cast even stronger shadows?) and the small ships streaming out of (or into?) the huge ship do so much to establish the epic proportions.

Can't wait to see your next post...

10-23-2004, 07:59 PM
...looking forward to seeing further development

10-23-2004, 10:04 PM
Great concepts, they look super cool! Keep it up and update soon :)

10-24-2004, 11:12 AM
Thats a fantastic concept "color search" WOW!

10-25-2004, 02:24 AM
Great colors in the scenery piece. I really dig how the warm colors play against the cooler light from the ship and create a center of interest.

10-26-2004, 09:49 PM
I want to see that spear fighter in action! Make several squadrons with different colors so as to confuse the enemy. I love it.

10-28-2004, 07:56 AM (

Now there is what a spear takeoff may look like (my english is not very good. Unfortunatly, i'm french!)

10-28-2004, 08:22 AM
The real Starbuck may be pride of you young padawan ;-)
Maybe you will be my motivation for a 3d work on this theme...

Keep on Rockin'

10-28-2004, 08:30 AM
That last sketch looks very promising, keep it up!

10-28-2004, 08:39 AM
Holy cow man, holy cow.

You're sketches ROCK! They are so amazing, clearly show what your intents are, and are just bloomin' gorgeous.

If they're your sketches I can't wait to see the final image.

I'm so in awe of you 2D guys, who can do these amazing sketches on PC. Where does one start to learn how to do this? Do you need a graphics tablet? What software do you use? Are there any tutorials on the net?? 'Cos I'm at an intermediate level with 3d, but I've been so inspired by the 2d side, I'd love to learn how to do that - because for my concept sketch I had to go traditional, using pencil and watercolours... which was time consuming, and doesn't have the powerful colours of a computer sketch.

10-28-2004, 08:53 AM
Hey dude!
Thanx for such concideration!
First of all, i begun to draw at 8 and i'm 30 years old (so be quite patient).
Take a look at this tutorial
from a great artist named Sparth.
Of course you will need a tabet pencil and a drawing soft (like photoshop or Painter).

Hang on!

10-28-2004, 09:15 AM
thanks for the advice, I'll check out that tutorial, and I'm already considering the purchase of a graphics tablet, as it should help with my 3d as well (For things like Artisan in Maya, where I can sculpt using the pen and pressure sensitive pad etc.)

10-28-2004, 09:23 AM
I have a futurist vision.....:
"and the winner is....STARBUCK!!!"
clap clap clap clap/ hourra / clap clap clap clap /houhou /clap clap/ thanks thanks /clap clap clap clap/ I just want to say a word to my colleagues/ clap clap clap clap/ they inspired me every day/ clap clap clap clap clap/ flash flash flash/ clap clap clapclap..

10-28-2004, 10:26 AM
Spears taking off: another great concept

10-28-2004, 10:31 AM
Starbuck, that's a lovely concept there! You so obviously know what you're doing, it's a joy to behold. It reminds me of a lovely mix of Bespin and Battlestar Galactica. Superb colours, very grand.

10-28-2004, 10:58 AM
Another great concept!!

I don't think it is as 'grand' as the image before with the shaft of light... but the fighters look great and, once again, it's beautifully painted.

is this a close up version of that previous concept?

10-28-2004, 11:24 AM
hey starbuck nice drawings man.,..nice design...didn't know that peoples from Aston Martin get so far till now!!I'm an Aston fan now....well...I was before ..have to admit/....he he ..nice going ..cheers

10-28-2004, 11:48 AM
Maybe Duddlebug! It might be a close up of the first concept (i like very much the "hive donut" as base for the spears).

And yes i'm very inspired by the starwars and galactica series (nobody's perfect!)
I'm gonna make some new researchs next week on the mothership "USS Vanquish" (i'd rather find an other name, everybody think of aston martin car) and later for the "hive-donut-base"

10-28-2004, 03:18 PM
Hi Starbuck,

I dont worry about your artwork. You will go far.:)

10-28-2004, 04:15 PM
Wow, great designs and concept.
I love the mood in the first concept and the openess in the second one, both of them are very good.

10-28-2004, 04:26 PM
I´m really love he last concept, awesome colors, specially the use of pink.

10-28-2004, 06:53 PM
The light is fantastic!

10-29-2004, 01:08 PM
was kiding with the Aston the french cars too.........renault megan too rocks...last night I was in one....but we don't make comercials job so far.......good luck with the contest

10-29-2004, 02:01 PM
Great light and colors! I love it!

10-29-2004, 05:16 PM

Your drawings and setting colors are good, you makes honor with
your people. to go! to go!

10-31-2004, 10:35 PM
hey starbuck !! un tit FRENCHIE!!! :D
genial on va enfin pouvoir montrer au monde entier que la france a du nivo ;) :p
serrons nous les coudes ;)

en tout cas vriament cool notemment ton dernier concept sketch :D

Nice last conept sketch man ;) love style and angle of view and lights.... all great !
just need some idea behind and finalizing :D can't wait to see more ;)

11-01-2004, 01:20 AM
j´adore ton style.. tres inspirant...

very good concepts.. and very inspiring. to be continued

11-01-2004, 01:42 AM
That is pretty cool!
Only one stupid comment is that I am not sure about the ship to the right in the last picture. It breaks with the flow and the depth in your composition - having the rest flying to the left in a beautiful, balanced perspective, that one should follow similar lines and not fly "upwards."
But, hey, I guess it's just one of many concepts anyway.
Great stuff! :applause:

11-03-2004, 08:43 AM (

What a Spear Pilot looks like?
I'm sure every body who watched my pictures asked himself this question...(i asked myself the question too!).
So they are, the mighty and fearless pilots from an other galaxy, proud to give their life for the defense of the hive (i like the analogy with the bees!)

11-03-2004, 11:08 AM
Hey come on, no fair... I suggest we kick Starbuck out for being too um...skilled :}
No seriously, I`m a sucker for more loose sketches

11-03-2004, 11:13 AM
These are such good concepts... the light and use of colour is great in all of them...

The last one is clever in getting close up character work alongside the 'grand'-ness of the ship and fighters!! But, maybe it'd be even more 'grand' and 'operatic' if the figures were in action...? fighting for instance..? Or in more dramatic poses..? Or from a lower perspective...?

Just chucking some ideas at you... love your work...

11-03-2004, 11:17 AM
Yeah! great idea!

I will search for more action in my characters (maybe not fighting but running or stunned by the spears take off).
Thanx for such help!

Dene of Terror
11-03-2004, 04:13 PM
oh man this is looking awesome!

DEFINATLY keeping an eye on this one!

11-03-2004, 09:51 PM
fantastic work so far! I like pretty much everything about what you do. Don't know whether these figures in the foreground are really needed, though. Can't wait for your next step!

11-03-2004, 09:59 PM

Great sketches (yes I know I'm not original..), really "Star Space Opera War" ! :)

11-03-2004, 10:11 PM
yo starbuck, incredible concepts. I really like the ship design of the Spear. In regards to olve's comment, I think that other spear ship is dropping out of the "hive" right, it's not rising to go back in, it's in the process of hovering down to transform and take off. If this is the case, maybe have a couple of others in mid transformation, and doing the same. I think the lighting on them would be more coolish because they're being lit from the light inside the hive though. Well anyway, your stuff is rad.

11-03-2004, 10:35 PM
The color scheme is great and so is the rendering of the figures; there's a real sense of three-dimensionalism. I particularly like how the radiating straight lines produce a focal point right where the characters' heads are.

I agree with Olve about the ship on the right, it seems like it's drifting away from the rest of the fleet. One way to fix that would be to bring it to the left and making it bigger so it would overlap the outside of the hive, and changing where it's flying out from so it's more unified with the rest of the vehicles. Eh... you're the artist, you make the final call.

Nice work!

11-03-2004, 11:15 PM
STARBUCK: Woohoo!.....your da man! Your stuff is crits from me

11-04-2004, 08:17 AM
Another truley awesome concept from starbuck! Wahooo!

That's such a neat idea, with the pilots- great use of scale IMO, and very good composition.

Only think that I can comment on is the same as Olve's already mentioned. I do think that the rightmost ship seems to not follow the crowd, and breaks the lovely composition of the rest of the image - I'm not sure if you'll want to change it or not - but IMO it would truely top off your piece as something outstanding, without flaw! lol.

11-04-2004, 09:34 AM
Your work shows much skill as well as originality. The best of luck to you and I hope you win =)

No crits from me as well

11-04-2004, 10:25 AM
man that last sketch is amazing, awesome sense of scale and great balance to the image

11-05-2004, 08:46 AM (

A concept sketch for the alien pilot girl (i know, it's the title).
I would like to use characters in my final work (but i still don't know if i'm gonna to).
Tell me what you think about it (live character or just space ships?)
See ya!

11-05-2004, 09:12 AM
Pretty cool concepts so far. I like the bee look of your alien race. The girl looks quite 'masculine' but I think if you have a man's concept too will help out in differentiation.
Waiting for more!
I suppose you are listening alot to "The Flight of the Bumblebee" as an inspiration, also in my opinion it would make a good choice for your theme, just a thought.

Keep it up

11-05-2004, 09:38 AM
wow, this is my favorite entry so far, love your way w colour and thc for the Sparth's link:thumbsup:

11-08-2004, 06:42 PM
nice character man.... love

11-08-2004, 07:38 PM
I love the warm and cools that you have worked into the sketch at this point.

11-08-2004, 10:17 PM
Great character - I think having 3/4 pilots in the foreground gives something extra to the piece - I don't know why it works, but it does - it makes the piece complete I feel, and it looks stunning - so I'd personally have both ships and people (with the ships being the main focus colour wise, but with similar composition to that earlier sketch... as I feel that really works well).

11-08-2004, 10:24 PM
wow, this is just amazing. u've taken my breath away. every piece holds a story and looks very very very promising. im stunned. keep up the great work. i just love the concept

11-09-2004, 08:56 AM (

Droïds troops landing from the mothership. Maybe colors are too much "pastel".

11-09-2004, 09:32 AM
Like your concept a lot this far
nice moody colors you almost get a watercolory effect to it which is really cool!

will be very interesting to see how this develops further.

Amazing work!

11-09-2004, 09:58 AM
can't wait to see more progression.

11-09-2004, 11:51 AM
Great concept, I love the Pastel look gives a nice misty morning look or pollution from the landing ships. Maybe the pastel for the background and the droids highly detailed.....

11-09-2004, 12:16 PM
The landing consept looks great. I bet my money on that.

11-09-2004, 01:11 PM
the last one's good, it is rather light, it would need a wider range of values and maybe the subjects in the foreground could be darker than what in the back. I also think that the pose of the ceter droid is too close to being symmetrical. maybe you could play around with possibilities there
good job and good luck

11-09-2004, 02:15 PM
Hi Starbuck,

your images and views are very impressive > Congratiulation.

11-09-2004, 05:13 PM
I like the concept sketches - though they do look a little washed out. But that has it's own merits. With the robots landing, could change it to be mist or fog or dust obscuring the view...

11-09-2004, 05:50 PM
No crits from me,excellent sketches you got there!Except maybe like hillartsympo with the fore and background colors.
Really great beginning,good luck!

y grint spacepra

11-10-2004, 03:46 PM
Many thanks guys for the remarks and critics!
I'm gonna have some week of rest (i've got a private life too!)
See ya next week!

11-10-2004, 08:30 PM
the pastel look works for me, it looks misty and really works on the scale well

11-11-2004, 01:42 AM
Oh man, that last one is awesome. I dig the color scheme.

11-15-2004, 10:46 AM
"The Landing well" I like your sketch the my colors a little too
"pastel" good progression. go go France...

11-15-2004, 10:56 AM
Wow - sorry for late post - latest concept ROCKS! It's very dense, which is so cool if you can pull it off!

As for the colours, I think the foreground needs less 'pastel', but other than that, I quite like the background colours.

11-15-2004, 12:16 PM
Hi there! Im following this thread quietly and with respect to ur sketches. I must say that there is a lot of great art and ur technique is just amazing. I really dig the "spear pilots" sketch coz of its grandness, but i miss a nonlinear dynamic which u succided putting it to ur last piece. If u could combine those two pics somehow, it would sure ba a masterpiece. My opinion :)

11-18-2004, 10:05 AM
yeah these concepts are awsome man. ilove it

nice costume/texture on the alien chick. keep em coming, more contrast in the latest concepet that you mentioned looked "pastel" style i recon..

11-18-2004, 01:31 PM
Thank you guys.
I'm a little bit lazy for the answering this time (i'm having a break).
You may answer to that question: wich scenery do i hve to develop:
-the landscape with the spaceships
-the spears takeoff
-the troops landing
-or all of them in a same time in a huge picture?

11-18-2004, 02:52 PM
Starbuck, you have some really well-fleshed-out concepts so far. Thags are looking really great, and I have no doubt that this is going to be a stellar piece! You asked on the previous page whether folks think it should be all spaceships of have human characters too. I really believe in including the latter as well. Your ship designs are great and really bring the epic feel to the piece, but humans (or other sentients) are what helps to connect up as viewers to a conflict, so i think that you should definately sneak them in there somewhere. Whether you have them as a less important foreground element or reacting to the troops landing, up to you.

As for your other queries, i think you should definately somehow keep the landscape with the spaceships, as that is my favorite image so far and i love the epic scale of it.

Best of luck, can't wait to see where you go with it!

11-18-2004, 08:35 PM
Ahh the choice!!! I think that either of the two concepts (the one with the ships taking off, with the pilots in the foreground, and the latest one with all the action) would work great. It's up to you to chose which one you think fufills the contest criteria the best, and also which you would most enjoy creating (or even which you'd learn the most from creating).

I wish you luck in your decision, as I know it wont be easy.

11-18-2004, 09:28 PM

I love the image with the pilots. the composition of the pilots is beautiful, character design is clearly your strong point - the pilots have SO much character, something which is often severely overlooked. the pilot looking up at the ships is one of the most breathtaking things i've seen in this challenge so far - very very elegant. i'm sick to death of unimaginative and stale "concepts" on the forum, there's far too much laser beams and planets - this piece is like a breath of fresh air!

i'm not sure about the bulky right forearm on the leading pilot, looks a bit clumsy for the confines of a small cockpit, but something that looks like it could lock into a piloting system would be great. i think you need to suggest some kind of context for the pilots, as if they're walking through a base, maybe with some parked ships in the background, you don't want to croud the image though, so only suggested shapes i feel.

sorry if i've missed the explanation in a previous post, but is the big mothership an alien craft (ie against these foreground guys)? if so what are these guys doing wandering around on the ground?
i read it that they're striking out from their base, situated close to the mothership, which is on their side.

i'm not too keen on the blue of the inner-mothership, to me it's a bit overwhelming, it makes the ship look smaller and the colour seems a bit isolated int he context of the whole piece. this is just a very minor point though, as when the image is refined (if you choose this one!) it will undoubtedly come together. i would have put some more natural lighting into the mothership if it belongs to the foreground people's side. their small ships look very earthy in their colour scheme and design, and i felt this should be reflected more in the big ship.

the clouds kick ass.

11-19-2004, 10:01 AM
I find all your designs so far 1 (as in Ace, not as in one)!

On your query for decision, I think that the final composition dimensions give a hell of a space to showoff most of them, so my vote goes for all in 1 (now as in one not as in ace). The first concept is actually the most impressing, in my eyes at least, and I think it can drive the major action of the composition....

That's just thoughts so...

Sending KBytes of encouragement and inspiration to you! :)

11-26-2004, 08:40 PM
Wonderful pastelish color schemes (stick with em) and great sense of hugeness on the piece with the fleet exiting the giant structure. You shouldn't have any doubts about including both characters and ships and stuff in your piece, especially when you can paint like this. Tell a story.

12-01-2004, 10:54 PM
Goooooood space ships man! :buttrock:

The futuristic-urban enviroment is excellent :scream:

More !

01-04-2005, 09:17 AM (

Here is the frist line for my final image.
I finally decided to merge all of my concepts into one! (at least, i would try).
After having viewed all of my friends pictures, i decided to not illustrate "the conflict", but "the reconciliation" after the war (i enjoy the happy ends, it is what i prefer in the stories)and the friendship between races.
What a programm!!!

01-04-2005, 04:12 PM
Well maitrized drawing as the remainder of your post.

01-04-2005, 04:48 PM
What a beautiful sketch of the two figures... is this image going to be like the Ewok dance at the end of Jedi?

..just kidding...

Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with, your previous work is beautiful!

01-06-2005, 07:20 PM
Hi, i like the style of your characters, the draw but the paint too, but will can you finished your composition before the end of the challenge, i hope because i think than a complete composition with your talent will be great

01-07-2005, 08:38 AM (

The final line art layout (Am i going to finish on time????)

01-07-2005, 08:42 AM (

Here comes the trial by fire!
I'm trying a new method :I first begin with the gray scales and the lighting of the whole scene, and only after i will work with the colors (hope it may be helpfull to finish right on time!)

01-07-2005, 08:42 AM

Because we all want to see it finished!

01-07-2005, 09:14 AM
Hi Starbuck,

I feel confident you will finish your piece because you have great skills.
This will be very interesting to watch you using the new technique.

01-07-2005, 09:20 AM
Great you see your work again. Lost and missing in action for quiet some time. The new updates is look good. Keep it up and I'm sure you will get there in time.

01-10-2005, 08:39 AM (

I'll never finish this picture on time!!

01-10-2005, 08:49 AM
Hi Starbuck,

just don´t give up. Paint till the end. I believe in you.

The current stage looks very good. Very inspiring technique. I also will try your approach with using greytones at first in my next picture.

01-11-2005, 08:28 AM (

First color try.
A space/night ambience may fit very well.
Arrrghhh, i also have the city and the space ship to do!
I want to sleep!!

01-11-2005, 08:31 AM (

For those who (like myself) enjoy to see closer the details.
I don't want to paint the city!!
Bouhouhou!! help!!

01-11-2005, 08:46 AM
Go Starbuck! It's looking great, very much like a film poster. I was hoping to see you complete this challenge after the amazing stuff you were coming out with early on. No sleep for you, keep working on it!

01-11-2005, 08:50 AM
Thanx speaky!
I'll try to stay awaked all night long!
Where are my pills??

01-11-2005, 09:53 AM
Hey Starbuck,

speaky is right > looks great. Go

A question:
How did you made those fine lines at the planet in the background?

01-11-2005, 11:27 AM
The fines verticals lines on the moon are a bug from my graphic board! (i know, it's strange!)

Wow, this came out of nowhere, nice work!

I don't want to paint the city!! Bouhouhou!! help!!Two words: Fog Layer! :-)

But seriously:
One of the things that I like the best about this piece, as I kind of commented earlier, is the human, er, sentient element. I love that they're holding hands. That being said, it's a part of the peice that is really hard to read. Part of the problem is that her entire forearm is hidden behind his, and then she's got thse big tentacles hanging down behind there too. If you had time, i would suggest repositioning or reposing their tentacles and arms to make it read better. Even just making them holding hands more than interlocking fingers could help as well. If you don't have that much time, perhaps saturating her skin a little more (at least at the hands?) so that that area reads more clearly as green-on-grey instead of grey-on-grey. Another idea would be to take his gloves off (and saturate his skin more maybe?) so that it reads green-on-orange.

It's also really unclear what she's holding.

anyhow, beautiful piece and great lighting. I hope you have time to finish the city, it's quite detailed. Nice work!

Things to do:
-finishing the starship
-finishing the "spears fighters"
-finishing the clouds.
In one word: finishing the whole paint!

Very good pic, the paint of the characters, the work on the city and the general atmosphere is very nice, i like this pic

Trés bon travail, la colorisation des personnages est trés bonne et limpide, la citée est trés détaillé et la montée atmospherique en arrière plan est trés bien réalisé, l'ensemble de la compo est trés homogene ne serait ce qu'au niveau des couleurs

Hi Starbuck,

I knew it. You are really fast! Cool development. The city looks very promising. I very much like the way you consistently work on the image. Every shape has the same closeness at all stages. Great work.

hi, nice image - I like the lighting and mood. I wonder where or what they are standing on though, looks like it doesn't quite fit (yet...)

The alien mothership is maybe a little bit too "hazy", i'll try to fix it if got the time.

Is your image cool, it dimensioned there pure in the
design which I like, perhaps to enrich a little colors in the gray not
to be mono colors? good luck for the end.

Hi Starbuck,

very beautiful work. I thinks besides TommyLee you really had to struggle with time in the end. But I think it devinetley was great that stayed tuned to get this thing finished.
