Well, hello to everyone. I'm rather new to the forum with few posts but I'll give it a shot. So far I've only thought of this phrase that is going to be my initiative for the growth of the galactic super-civilization:

"It is said through eons…when the powers of fire will be resistless hope will dawn; the council of “forever” will grant access to the ever-kept “machine”. A mighty reborn of the ancient…
From ashes and heart, through despair and union, with rage and wisdom"

Possibly coming up with some initial concepts the next days....:)

Hello to everyone again

10 October 2004, 08:00 AM
Welcome aboard terraarc! It's well worth giving these a shot, as you gain heaps of heady wisdom along the way.:)

Plus the prizes are neato.:D

10 October 2004, 10:13 AM
Hi man ...good luck and have fun friend. :bounce:

10 October 2004, 08:01 AM
geia sou gianakopoule! Nice to see another fellow greek onboard. Good Luck, I'm gonna keep an eye on your thread:buttrock:

10 October 2004, 08:35 AM
Thanks for the warm welcome mates!! Really appreciate it!

OK,OK I had a short story line written done and started off with some concepts. Here is the Story for start.

Civilization. Their civilization developed on the idea of using and advancing the mental powers each individual had. Their main, and more ancient, technological achievement is the mental amplifier. Of course, as every machine does, the amplifier had energy licks and couldn’t be used in a long period. Mental amplifiers started as very rare devices and briefly distributed to everyone. After several thousand years they manage to create even larger amplifiers and mount them to buildings and spaceships further enhancing their powers. To the time being each spaceship has some kind of amplifier on it. Most advanced of them create a strong energy field covering the entire spaceship with a purplish color, due to amplification.

The civilization took gigantic proportions through centuries. A vast galactic war with the last opponent race devastated their home planet. After victory over that race they managed to mentally “glue back” all the pieces of their home-planet that is a rock islands cluster that from distant looks like a unique globe. Each rock island carries a city on it all with own systems of defense and energy factories. Mainly, those islands carry major govern buildings for the whole empire.

After some more centuries of peaceful empire growth came a time where a secret society called “Fire” started growing. Recruiting from every corner of the galactic empire soon became a strong opponent and initiated hostilities with the empire. After several years of conflicts with the empire they appeared ever stronger and managed to break all defenses and head to the home-planet. The “Fire” powers where vast and acted simultaneously all over the major fleet centers leaving the empire uncovered to the final attack with a large rebel mother-ship, carrying the stronger amplifier build to time, that would destroy the very heart of the empire.

One of the rock islands is the center of the secret council of “forever” created in the beginning of the civilization as a research center. One of the forgotten experiments held at the beginning of this facility, some thousand centuries ago, was to mentally connect and tune the entire race on the planet to create a higher “machine” that would fully boost the mental powers to the maximum and minimizing to zero energy licks, performance and duration of the amplification. They made it back then and the machine was created. After several months of discussions and arguing the whole race decided to keep the “machine” secret and assign this secret to the research center. After centuries the research center diminished to a research council on inventions and development and after even more centuries became a secret council of the empire, with main focus on keeping safe the secret of the “machine”. The legend of the machine started a long time ago, soon after the experiment took place and it says:

‘It is said through eons…when the powers of fire will be resistless hope will dawn; the council of “forever” will grant access to the ever-kept “machine”. A mighty reborn of the ancient…

From ashes and heart, through despair and union, with rage and wisdom’

In this most critical time of the empire where it is stroke from inside the council decided to use the “machine” on the spaceship of the emperor and, with a cunning pilot, march to the center of the sect forces. Several other spaceships will aim in destructing as many enemy spaceships as possible while the emperor ship heads to the core of the sect attack, the rebel mother ship.

Well, that's it. I'd say is rather long but it has all the idea on my final scene (possibly post some concepts on that today or tomorrow, I've done simple sketch-work but seeing Dimitris' concept thought I should try a better one)

Thanks again!!

10 October 2004, 09:49 AM (

Ok, here is the initial idea:

We are on the council's rock island watching the procedure of equiping the imperial spaceship with the machine. Some, aircrafts depart for the outer space, some other prepare for battle rushing out from buildings. In the back we watch some major dog-fight with the rebelion fleet a rock island departing. On the upper left corner comes the great threatening mother-ship.

This is the very first idea drawn, much more spaceships, humans on the ground, bots preparing the imperial spaceship will be added along with FX of explosions, mentally-blue hair, amplifiers effects covering the departing rock island and the spaceships and other.....

10 October 2004, 09:57 AM (

Here is some initial sketch of a secret council member. Wearing a mask with some amplifiers on the back of his head to boost his mental powers. No hands shown, wearing something like a glove. Currently looking more like an emperor with all that staff in front of him...I'm gonna remove them

10 October 2004, 10:14 AM (

Here is a typical individual of my galactic empire. You can see the mental Hair on his head and the diversity of the hand arm thing with the thumb in a most unusual place. Actually, no hands needed for this guy he use psionic and telekinetics to move and create things. Do you find the idea of a braid on his mental hair attractive?

10 October 2004, 10:22 AM
Concepts lood good so far. I think the braided mental hair would look nice, but maybe a bit cliche. Keep up the good work.

10 October 2004, 10:23 AM
Good luck! Great concept and a cool and hugh story behind it. The yellow-eyed alien is great. have you already though about what material the clothes are made of?

10 October 2004, 08:31 AM (

This is the facility for creating Atmosphere and Gravity for a rock island. Every rock island has at least 4 of these facilities placed on opposite end of the island as shown in the image above. Several Guard Towers are placed on it. The facility size is gigantic, and in the final image is going to be seen from quite a distance. More to come.

10 October 2004, 08:42 AM (

This is one of the Robot carriers helping to add the "machine" to the imperial spaceship. With rotating and expanding arms. The final model will have more dust and scratches on it.

10 October 2004, 08:01 PM
very good job so far!! the story is great!! the concepts too, cant wait to see some 3d! keep it up and good luck!! :bounce:

10 October 2004, 11:12 PM
Interesting storyline, and the concepts show a grand scale.I like your plan Mike, keep working on this hard, promising start.................:arteest:

10 October 2004, 12:34 AM
Mike, you've got an interesting storyline, some nice character sketches, and a hugely ambitious preliminary sketch that looks like it's going to keep you busy right up to the last minute! I'm particularly interested to see how the characters come together, as it looks like you must have some experience with cloth simulation. Best of luck!

10 October 2004, 02:00 PM
Thanks everyone for your support! Hopefully coming with updates and models next week!!! Happy modelling/texturing/brainstorming and bubbles to everyone!:bounce:

(Kind of hurry this time to post a proper reply!THANKS AGAIN )

11 November 2004, 08:57 AM (

Here is some initial thoughts on the effect of mental amplifier. This one (the red sphere is the amplifier) transforms mental powers to propulsion energy (the yellowish top part). How do you find this visualization of my idea?

11 November 2004, 02:35 PM
Mike, the "mental amplifier" effect looks interesting, though it might be wise to experiment some with the color scheme (I'm a bit skeptical about the yellow). From a technical standpoint, I'm curious as to how you actually plan on achieving the effect -- particularly the crackling energy part. Any initial ideas?

11 November 2004, 03:28 PM
Thanks for the comments. Actually the mental amplifier will be of many uses: Mental to propulsion, mental to atmosphere etc. So I need some differentiation on the colors mental (light blue) to all different one of you have a suggestion?

Actually the above image is a default max render: Used some atmosperic apparatus with fire explosion volumetric and a material with some levels of noise on several maps....

11 November 2004, 04:05 PM
I would also try to "brake" the spherical shape to something more elliptical....just my humble opinion....also if want to utilize this Mental propulsion in different ways , i tihnk it would be more interesting in visualization of it if u try to experiment in many different shapes to form it...:)

11 November 2004, 05:19 PM
Mike, I've posted an alternate approach to the color scheme:

I guess my main reservation was really with how the yellow was playing against the backdrop of your render -- and, potentially, in a daylight scene. Check your pm for a more detailed explanation.

11 November 2004, 09:24 AM
Thanks everyone for comments and suggestions.
Dimitris - Actually this image is a test for the material, no red sphere is going to be in the inside, the sphere is actually a test to see how the effect interact with a solid object inside. The different shapes for different uses is a nice idea that I've taken into thought in my concepts (unfortunatelly no scanner to share them here but I'll have some line work done in PS....soon ...maybe...)
nuclearman - Most interesting approach on the color scheme! Really popped out some mentallity, but I' ll keep that color scheme suggestion for the "bad" guys! I need something more noble in color for the good guys (just remembered Galandriel's "eager for the ring" green colors!)

Really thanks again!

11 November 2004, 10:09 AM (

The Atmospheric Reactor model. Currently, no texturing but I work hard on it. Since it'll be a not so close model I basically use texture to simulate details. It's kind of working. If you have any suggestion or ideas on adding details to a mid distance object please tell me

11 November 2004, 10:21 AM (

Here is a simple final scene composition with primitives. Hope it\'s quite clear what all these boxes and cylinders are. all floating objects are \"the enemy\". The distant rock island that\'s floating above the others has his on Atmospheric Reactor hitten and that grey thing is meant to be smoke. Did some test for distance fog. I would appreciate suggestions and critiques.

11 November 2004, 10:48 AM
Your composition looks grand and it will have a very ambient feeling to it ...keep it up man!:bounce:

11 November 2004, 04:32 PM
hi Mike..

i agree with DimitrisLiatsos.. your composition really looks grand.. but you have to rearrange the stuff.. try to move whole scene to the left or right.. just to leave one row of buildings and displace the center.. cos now composition is not expressive enough..

overall great stuff! keep it up m8!

the best of luck and cheers..

11 November 2004, 01:15 PM
Yeah really, your composition has a grand feel. One suggestion, just start modeling your scene cause I can't really wait to see the updates.
Very nice and promising concept:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 01:34 PM
Dimitris, greentek, madshooter thanks for support and suggestions!
Greentek, it seems that I luck some focus point as you mentioned. I want to drive the eye of the observer from front figures -> the central imperial ship -> battle above and finally to the distant incoming rebel mothership that is all covered by fog in the far upper left corner of the concept ...never tried something like this I'm open to suggestions.

Also been a little descouraged this weekend and did nothing but some small sship modelling (not completed yet)

:) Thanks again for replies, encouragement and suggestions! :)

11 November 2004, 03:52 PM
Mike, the Atmospheric Reactors look good -- and you're right: just enough geometric detail for the distance they'll be in the scene.

I agree with Greentek about the balance being slightly off at the moment, but would suggest that the reason for this has a lot to do with the current camera angle causing imbalance in a scene that implicitly is trying to obey the "rule of thirds." As it stands, the foreground is a little "weak" (ie, more like a quarter than a third), the mid-distance essentially has a hole in it (the area where the blue is dominating) drawing the eye toward a center with insufficient payoff, and the upper portion wants to pull the eye across the scene with the diagonal formed by the moon and the two floating objects. Net result: the scene isn't balanced, and the sight-lines are working at cross purposes. All this can probably be taken care of by dropping the camera a bit lower to accentuate the foreground and then working up a background plate that helps strengthen the middle of the scene. You may also want to tweak the arrangement of objects, but that will be a lot easier to gauge after they're modeled and you have a better sense of what registers as the strongest components.

Anyway, keep going! :-)

11 November 2004, 11:00 AM
WOW! nuclearman thanks again for this extensive helpful explanation! I'll try heading the way you suggest. Do you think it'll be a good idea to remove one one side of the buildings? Anyway I'm posting now a texture version of the Reactor....hopefully coming soon with some spaceships too...:)

11 November 2004, 11:11 AM (

I think I'm done with texturing this building. The effect is for basic viewing only (colors) and the lighting needs a bit more work.

11 November 2004, 11:15 AM
Mike.................Quite a good compo/layout.........As for balance issues i would suggest giving one side of your buildings, lets say the right side a nice perspective and almost full view.....And as for the left side of your buildings you should give just a "Glimpse" (Partial view) just a small section to be shown..................Ok just my quick thoughts here.......I like what you have, and it's pretty close to being right on.....Just some more tweaking and twisting,and.....well we all are doing it.....;) .....Keep at it,looking good, and has some nice potential to be special.....:arteest:

11 November 2004, 07:34 PM
Mmmm... :) I like the composition ! I suggest to work with the lighting up the atmospheric reactor- those clouds could lighten up the tower really nicely :)

11 November 2004, 01:44 PM
Virtuoso, thanks for suggestion! I'll probably move that way you propose! I'll try my best (always using my personal signature's moto of course! Gandalf said it well I think!)
taavi, thanks for support and comments on the reactor. Currently no final light put on it, just a little something for the model showoff.

Currently I've a hell of concepts and "trying" to start modelling. Yesterday, was certainly not my day! After a couple of hours of modelling a sship the application failed me and didn't autobackup my model! So today starting over again!:D

Hopefully I'll speed up my pace...

11 November 2004, 09:18 PM

hi Mike..
i can't add anything to it.. really great observation and very useful suggestions from nuclearman..

your texturing is very clear and nice.. sure it's matter of taste but i think you could experiment with colors of the effect..

going great mate! keep it up!

11 November 2004, 09:07 AM
Hi, All my encouragement for your project to follow....

11 November 2004, 09:08 AM
I like a lot the composition... the only thing strange, it's the background which seems choked stalemate the foreground. It would certainly be necessary to move the subject or the framing.

Anyway, good starting... and I love the FX ot the tower... good luck and good courage for the following

11 November 2004, 12:42 PM (

This is the "Stinger". A one-man ship of the rebel forces. Currently done modelling, hope with texturing a lot of this model will pop up proper. Also in the image is a logo idea for the rebel forces

11 November 2004, 12:50 PM (

Here is one of the Grande Buildings that will be used in the forground. Currently at 60% of modelling, some greeble used in various spaces. I consider this to be the closest building to the camera. Comments always welcomed

11 November 2004, 01:00 PM
greentek and Lemog thanks for support and comments! I'll adopt them as soon as I lay my hands on the final composition again...

Tranchefeux thanks for your kind words

11 November 2004, 02:37 PM
Hey, another cool greek man here... I like your concept and especially the cool effects of the building:buttrock: Keep it up like thqt. Best wishes...:)

11 November 2004, 02:45 PM
Yes... a lot of great stuffs in this building... and I like the design very original of the Stinger... but It seem to don't have enough polygons...

11 November 2004, 03:05 PM
Great job on that building terraarc, I love the style & design, a true inspiration!
The stinger seems a nice concept as well, but it may need some more detail and definately more polygons, since you seem to try to give it a more "rounded" feel.

11 November 2004, 03:58 PM
Some very nice updates, Mike! I like the design and detail of the building -- particularly the use of the hexagonal component, which is a nice touch. I also like the unusal design of the Stinger, but agree with Lemog that the geometry is showing through on the toroids you used. It may be possible to adjust the geometry approximation in your app to avoid the blockiness, as the overall appearance would benefit from some smoothing. Anyway, it's good to see you've made progress!

11 November 2004, 09:11 PM
Looking good so far. I get the feeling of commerce on a galactic level from this art at a glance. Further detail will definantly be worth watching for.

11 November 2004, 09:11 AM
i like your concept and effect.

11 November 2004, 09:48 AM
Saschi0815 (I wonder why 0815!) thanks for your support, wishing the best on your try!
Lemog thanks for support and comments. Actually, I was thinking of the Stinger as a small one -person ship that is going to be viewed from quite a distance, comparing to the Building has the size of...actually very small :) almost 10 to 20 of them fit in the hexagonal dock. So I tried to keep the polycount low (approximatelly 3000 tris). But I'll give it some more smoothness on the back mainly...

grafos Euxaristw suntekne! One root from beautiful Crete . As for the Stinger I think I covered some aspects of my thought, I'll try to fix that as less poly-compicated as I can.

nuclearman thanks for comments and support! The building is already been pushed further. I hope I can show some progress till the end of the week modelwise and texturewise too.

||) |V| |^| thanks for comments. I wasn't aiming at galactic commerce but that not a problem :). Further details to follow, but mostly on textures

tuck Thanks! :)

11 November 2004, 09:17 AM (

This is "The Hive" spaceship. As it's name says it is a space - dock. Inside it lie a whole bunch of Stingers and other small sship (to come). As you can see it is quite big. Also can see the size of it in the initial composition sketch. Coming soon with updates on this.

11 November 2004, 09:23 AM (

OK,OK done modelling this building. It will be the closest to the view building. Added some docks on the top of the boxy Tower, from which several small defending ship will launch heading to the close Rebel "Hive" as seen in composition.

11 November 2004, 09:34 AM
Just dropping by to say you are doing a fine job here Mike...................Really alot of nice work, and I love your attitude towards it.It's very positive, and I can see this will be a very nice finished piece, you are well on the way with it,keep it up hard,it's all paying off nicely.........:arteest:

11 November 2004, 11:40 PM
hi Mike..
very nice updates! very nice!

i like both of them.. as "the Hive" as well as Building..
looking forward to see texturing.. ;)
cheers mate!

11 November 2004, 11:49 PM
Dose ktiria sto lao......Give us updates...where are u man....i like the buildings u make

11 November 2004, 01:36 PM
Virtuoso, thanks for your words of encouragement! I am actually hoping to complete this one and to give as much as I can to it, besides all this process is really fun and educational too! :bounce:

Greentek, thanks for droping by! The Hive has a very looong way to the texturing as I'm gonna fill all this empty spaces on it with lots of details! The building's texture is rather closer, but no intention on going over it now

Dimitris , euxaristw gia thn uposthri3h! (όταν γράφω εδώ σκέφτομαι αγγλικά! η "υποστήριξη" βγήκε πραγματικά με το ζόρι!) Thanks for the support! I currently have two more buildings in concepts but they're not that Grande as this one! Hopefully they're gonna be that detailed also! :bounce:

11 November 2004, 09:36 AM
• Hey, nice, other than that your models and concept seem cool

11 November 2004, 12:16 PM
hi...your concept is nice...i love your design for the a little advice..i think the side element on your building dont fit the scale of the rest of makes look your building small...(thats in my point of feel free to ignore me)

i like your designs on the ships too and i think youre doing it fine in the modeling...
i wish u good luck for the challenge ...:)

11 November 2004, 12:51 PM
Awesome building man!! Mpravo kai sigxaritiria! Efxomai oti kalitero! My best wishes for your succeed!

11 November 2004, 01:42 PM
Great buildings and i really like your concept and story

can't wait to see more

11 November 2004, 02:18 PM
Very nice updates chief. You do amazing buildings. Nice detail work. Has a very anime or sci-graphic novel esque feel to it, which are some of my faves.

11 November 2004, 02:59 PM
Climax, Lelantos, ||) |V| |^| really appreciate your comments and encouragement!
rattlesnake thanks and I hope I can figure this proportions problem with some texturing. Watching the building (again) I was kind of hitted with some scale adjustments (basically reducing the depth of the wall surrounding the whole "greebled" and more staff)..

Coming soon (I hope) with updates :wavey:

11 November 2004, 10:24 AM
Mike, looking forward to seeing the detail work on the Hive. Hard to believe there are only fifty some-odd days left to get everything done!

11 November 2004, 11:43 AM (

This is the Vulture, a two man rebel ship. This sship will be attacking the nearest island coming out from the Hive, along with some "Stingers". I consider this state almost final (some optimization needs to be made) but always open in c&c!

11 November 2004, 12:36 PM (

More of the Hive: Modelling the front part and inside. The small red ship is a "Stinger". Added control towers (up and down) and communication towers (left and right) with some details. Need some things to add in the upper tower and the inside and then I'll be working on the middle and back. That's it for now! Critiques and comments are always welcomed

11 November 2004, 12:49 PM
nuclearman thanks for the support and reminder! When I'm thinking the staff I have in concept and want to model I get a panic-headache, also when I' thinking all those staff that I don't even have in concept .. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I have tons of staff to model and then all these tons to texture! I'm having a rough plan of another month of modelling and then focus on rest of texturing and composition. I wish I'll make it on time!

11 November 2004, 06:04 PM
hi Mike..
your model of Hive looks great! i like it a lot man!!! very massive and powerful!
about Vulture i may suggest you to work a bit on the shader's main properties such as speculars and glossiness.. cos now it looks like car painted plastic for hi-fi system.. :)
looking forward to see development mate!!
the best of luck and cheers..

11 November 2004, 08:53 AM
Mike, the detail work on the Hive looks really, really good. I'm less enthusiastic about the undercarriage of the Vulture, which is registering more as visual noise than as functional detail (some of this may be a product of the lighting and shader currently in use on the model, but the yellow stuff reminds me of a folded-up rubber bath mat).Anyway, the Hive gets full marks. Thumbs up, and have fun with the particles! :-)

11 November 2004, 11:56 AM I hope to see quickly these models with textures... I find the Vultur very original... it make me feel a bird head...

11 November 2004, 01:31 PM
Some real nice modelling going on here, and very nice designs :bounce:

11 November 2004, 01:33 PM
wow great modleing man... i like ur ship designs... very cool.... the hive looks cool too... best of luck buddy... keep it up

11 November 2004, 02:12 PM
great stuff. Those models look killer. Very vicious! I like it alot!:bounce:

11 November 2004, 04:22 PM
I relly like the building model it looks awesome.
Great work.
The hive is great too.
Maybe you could add some hexa holes in it too
Just an Idea

See this

11 November 2004, 05:58 PM
Love the hive with all those small details inside and the vulture is nice cant wait to see what is next

Nice scale on the hive really big ship:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 06:19 PM
Some really nice modeling going on here - and I like that Mental energy Amplifier a lot! Keep up the good work!

11 November 2004, 08:50 AM
the big ship is looking very nice...the sense of scale fits very nice to your concept...i think u will add lots of little lights to it...i can imagine the picture...
what r u planning for the inner part of the ship?...ok i better wait..good luck for your next steps:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 09:00 AM
awesome work .. the vulture is aptly named,
the hive is looking really cool..
nothing to crit.. keep it going!

11 November 2004, 09:07 AM
Vulture looks really cool, and the hive certainly too  Does it make toast as well, or only ship dispatching? :D Great designs overall!

11 November 2004, 09:09 AM
toast? lol, what's in the water there... hehe

11 November 2004, 09:18 AM (

I think I'm done with the Hive. The perspective shown is almost the one that'll be used in the final scene, so I didn't over-do it with it's back. Although I think that something is missing from the back side part of the hull, some really large wings with control rooms and turrets on. Open to C&C

11 November 2004, 09:22 AM (

Here is a new model for the defenders. I tried to differentiate the design of the two fleets so this one is not so curvy. It's a one man ship that will be attacking to the Hive in dozens. The side wings carry lots of thrust power to provide more flight flexibility. C&C always welcomed!

11 November 2004, 09:32 AM
Hi terraarc,

Dropped by to check your progress. Like the hive ships - they have come a long way from your ealry models and really convey a sense of scale.

Spitfire dont match up in detail but I asume they still have work to do.

Keep up the good work.

11 November 2004, 09:44 AM
Paul, thanks for the support. The Vulture material was a personal presentation mistake, none of the is supposed to be used in the final texture! I'll send a non hi-fi image of the Vulture for critique too.

Michael, thanks man! Appreciate your comments on the Vulture, as I said above the shaders was a presentation mistaken (I'll write down 100 times "never try this again"). The undercarriage is meant to be a mental amplifier thrust engine that's why I put different colors to it. Thanks on the support for the Hive! Unfortunatelly, particles left a little behind (you're doing a great work with them  ), a LOT of models to complete....See you soon with updates

Lemog, ohhhh!! :surprised do I have to texture them too? There :banghead: is :banghead: no :banghead: time :banghead: ! I'll try drinking Nitro on the next month or so!

kaajey, thanks man! Actually I was thinking in adding something like hexa hole inside it, like an in/out to a second launching room.

rattlesnake, as you can see from the last "Hive" post I don't plan adding more modelling parts in the inside. My perspective of the inside in the final image is that it'll spit out a lot of Stingers and Vultures while the turrets in the front part keep shooting incoming Spitfires!! :bounce:

JamesMK, thanks man! The toast launcher would be a great idea for the back part wings I' thinking (see my last Hive post)...
flyingP, overcontrast, ||) |V| |^|, Lelantos, Gunilla, Versiden thanks for the support! :bounce:

Hope I didn't forget noone! Until next update:

Keep rockin' everyone!!

11 November 2004, 09:59 AM
If you find a magic potion to finish in time... you can send me a little glass :scream:

Seriously... I like your Spit'... just one thing... I lke the wings design... but I find them to near the fuselage... I will prefer with a little arm or portion of with, to draw aside the wing... or cutting some hole, to have something visually more light...

11 November 2004, 10:26 AM
I wish I could find that potion (at some period RedBull worked fine though!)

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of it quite a lot and finally decided to go for a more compact design, but right now I don't remember why! :surprised

I'll give it a shot, thanks again

11 November 2004, 11:16 AM
but right now I don't remember why! :surprised
Certainly due to too much RedBull, no ? :banghead:

11 November 2004, 11:26 AM
Quite the fleet.....A lot of seperate models, and all done with some nice attention to details and various style's..............They all look like they belong within the same World, while still looking quite unique from one another........Your doing a very nice job here Mike, keep it going strong, your hard work is paying off real nicely for you.......:arteest:

11 November 2004, 06:28 PM
I like your spitfire design. The side paneling looks good. When I design something I look for function not just cool factor and this definantly looks functional, plus cool factor :P Great job. More updates please!

11 November 2004, 08:38 PM
 So far so good. Great and fast updates:thumbsup:
I like a lot the Atmospheric Reactor
Keep up the great work

11 November 2004, 01:31 PM (

Well this is a start on another building, the name is corresponding to it's composition position. Actually, the workflow is exactly the same as in the first building and it "flows" quite quickly! Coming soon with a final model.

11 November 2004, 01:35 PM (

Here is a start on the Council Member concept. I've changed some things like all those wires that transfer "mental" energy on a backpack container. I hope I can plug lots of equipment especially on his back that is going to be visible in the final composition. C&C always welcomed, also some S (for suggestions) would be needed :)

11 November 2004, 01:56 PM
Lemog, Virtuoso, ||) |V| |^|, SUN (patrida!!) thanks for your support! I'll try moving a hell of a lot faster with modelling to enter some texturing too!!:arteest:

Keep on rockin' and rollin' and funkin' and... and.... RnBeein'...Jazzin'.... :scream::surprised (don't mind my little brain-overheatin'...)

11 November 2004, 03:41 PM
Wow, Mike, you've certainly made a lot of progress in the past few days! I really like the start on the Council Member, and the detail work on the new building is quite impressive (though I don't envy the task of texturing it -- it looks like the back end of the "PC from Hell" ... complete with a thousand expansion slots!). The pivoting side wings on the Spitfire are a nice touch, and the only real question I have at this point is how the colors will all fit together, as there are soooo many finely detailed pieces that look like they represent different materials ... whew! I suspect you'll be spending many, many late nights trying out texture and lighting variations! (As will we all.)

11 November 2004, 04:04 PM
I see that that advances quickly?

11 November 2004, 01:49 AM
wow.. man geat updates here!
great detailing on the building and guy is looking good as well! he reminds me 'predator'..
you're right Mike.. we (me too) have to move faster cos time is really running away..
keep great work up mate!
to express somehow my support i can tell you that my favorite writer is greek - Nikos Kazantzakis.. and not only favorit writer but i think he is a greatest thinker and spiritual seeker of XXth century..
cheers mate..

11 November 2004, 06:59 AM
Nice progress Mike great details on the building you are moving fast
Weird guy... I LIKE HIM...:scream:

Good so far cant wait for more:bounce:

11 November 2004, 11:48 AM
The council member has a very interesting look... persuasive in that slightly uncomfortable way... you know like a salesman that used to be a mafia thug. I would want to see some sense of volume in that body of his, but I would assume you just haven't gotten around to that yet. Looks really good.

11 November 2004, 01:17 PM
Hi Mike, have to agree to our contest-friends - time goes by - and I'm the best example how u should not to make ( shame)

The councilmember looks really good and original...maybe his sideview looks a bit to lean...or is he made of an empty hull filled with energy?

Anyway, you are on track...

11 November 2004, 04:30 PM
hi ....i like all the little details on the ship...for me is looking perfect...about the council member i think is a good idea to add details for the back...the only advice that come to my mind is that if he is not going to be to close to camera u better fake geometry using textures and alpha channels instead geometry just to keep your scene working fine...and well maybe more suggestions will come when the council member is close to b finished ...but if u accept a little idea...i think he could look nice with a very large clothing...that falls to the ground ...or maybe floats around.. with some magical atmosphere...just a little idea that crossed my mind...of course is your design and you know what u want for your composition...

ok...ill b tuned here!

12 December 2004, 08:22 AM
Thanks everyone and have a nice month!!

Michael, thanks for the support. Texturing of these buildings surely is going to be a hell, but I'm thinking of 3 or 4 different variations for all the buildings' small parts (Thank god greeble provides some auto poly selection and material assign!!). Thank god the nights are longer in winter!:applause:

worleyclarence, thanks... :)

Paul, thanks for the support man! I MUST work faster but I seem to lack some energy...maybe invent some galatic magical..hmmm....hmmmm....and mail it to all cg challengers....
I also think that Kazantzakis is one great mind of the past century and feed us with tons of thinking material, himself was a real traveler! (Going far with this so I'll stop...)

Lelantos, thanks for the support man! Wishing the best on your GSO too!

JamesMK, thanks for the support and comments! I hope I can add lots of volume in this guy 'cause two of them are standing right in front of the composition...hope I work thinks out good...

Saschi0815, thanks for the support! I'm thinking of this task as a good personal test, so I WILL finish it even and if I won't make the deadline! The council member looks lean to me too...I'll fix that soon..thanks again! :)

rattlesnake, appreciate the suggestion man! Actually he is going to stand right in front of us in the final I need some details for sure! The long cloth falling to ground with magical surround is an interesting idea...I'll think it over!

Have a good new month! Hopefully coming soon with updates and more staff!!

Magic potion to everyone! :wavey:

12 December 2004, 08:30 AM
Looking for that update........I like your latest Mike.......It's quite the load of models you have here........I can just say never compromise your models because of time, the shortcuts can always be seen if you do so.It's always better to finish as you intended from the start even if it takes you that extra week or two after the deadline, better a perfect rendition of your vision a week late or so then a half way one a week or so sooner.............So my advice........I invite you to work along side me for 70 to 80 hour weeks :wip: :arteest: the rest of the way, lots and lots of coffee and get this finished just right.......................Vision in perfect shape.....I''ll be looking for those updates, all the best and go at it hard, your doing a very nice job here..........:arteest:

12 December 2004, 01:14 PM
Mike - that is some crazy detailed modeling you've been doing since my last visit - amazing!
I agree totally with Virtuoso on this - better to complete the way you want it to be rather than stress something you're not happy with. I also think that your models will look great even with very simple textures - it might even show off all the details better. Lots and lots of coffee it is - but don't forget the fun

12 December 2004, 01:52 PM
woohoow man!... ur modeling is really awesome... insane detailing in the grand building!... very cool... and dude the council member looks really great... btw i got a little suggestion on the council member.. u can make the face more organic or make it look like a hard mask.. currently it looks more like something in between.. its okay if u wanted to do that.. but u know its just me...keep pusing those vertices pal! ur almost there!... good luck mate!!

12 December 2004, 01:37 PM
Great job on the modeling of the council member, he looks mean! Your doing an excellent job there my friend. Keep at it!

12 December 2004, 09:02 AM (

I have completed modelling this one, the next buildings are going to flow a lot better as I'm thinking of first modelling the two completed and then using some of the various textured small parts to fill the new ones. C&C are welcomed!

12 December 2004, 09:20 AM
man all details look very amazing!!..waiting for some textures man!!:arteest:

12 December 2004, 09:32 AM
lol I mean all those details on the buildings are great !!! and very different that's cool I like it bro ! Luck

12 December 2004, 09:37 AM
I think that will be great with textures, I can't wait man

12 December 2004, 10:19 AM
Hello to everyone! :wavey:

Virtuoso, thanks for your support and encouragement to stay awake and alert!!

Gunilla, thanks for the support man! Wishing the best on your effort too! Lots of coffee and Gallic magic potion too!

overcontrast, thanks mate! The councli member is supposed to wear a mask so I'll head this way, thanks for pointing it. As for the vertices thing...there are a LOT vertices to be pushed and a hell more LOTTER (that's some good english!!) to be created!!

||) |V| |^| my friend, greetings and salutations! Thanks for dropping by! Wishing the best on your grande effort too!

rattlesnake, Divaise (go!go!go!) and Lemog thanks for the support! I hope I'll manage some progress sooooon....

PS: Until now I had no internet home, but from today I arranged something so I'll be progressing more on late hours with more updates and supporting!!

12 December 2004, 01:41 PM
The atmosferic reactor model is great! Well done! u got skills!! I like all of ur stuff.....but the reactor is the best!very well designed.
Keep it up!..

12 December 2004, 06:16 PM
Hello Mike , You have a nice progress with your project , those building are looking great , nice details and pretty good shape .

The concepts design of your chars and your ships looks great too , very well designed, your almost done with the model process right ? can wait to see your updates with textures .

thanks for your wonderful support Mike , Ill stay close mate in your thread

12 December 2004, 01:30 PM
This has some great details cant wait to see how it will look when it is texturedgood job
need more & more updates to see:bounce:

12 December 2004, 06:37 PM
That is a really nice design. I love the extensive detail work you put into it. After all the UVW mapping I did yesterday I can only imagine that this one will be umm, fun! ;) Keep at it I can't wait to see more.

12 December 2004, 12:29 AM
hi Mike..
details on the building suit and work just fine mate!
but we definitely should move faster.. and thanks for this magic gallic spells.. :D
in addition don't forget to consider christmass holydays.. for instance i personally will be forced few days do nothing cos have to spend this days (4-7) for family.. thats great for sure but if the officials (Leonard) of this challenge can add one week to the deadline would be simply fantastic..
anyway keep this coolest stuff up and the best of Gallic spells to you! :D

12 December 2004, 08:07 AM
Thanks everyone for your support!

-OZ-, thanks man! Hopefully the rest building will have some same look (without the mental amplifiers of course), I consider starting texturing some of them as soon as this week!

adr, thanks for your support! Unfortunatelly, the modelling process includes some 3 buildings , 4 spaceships and 3 more characters :D (I'll see how I manage all these!!). Currently I'm thinking to move on to some texturing on the existing staff....

Lelantos, thanks for the support! Really appreciate it! KBytes of support and energy to you man!

||) |V| |^|, thanks for dropping by mate! Can't wait to get to the fun part as you mentioned!! I think after spending some XXX number of hours texturing the two buildings then I'll have lesser hours on texturing the rest of the buildings (I plan on using various of the already modelled little details..). Have fun mate! (translation: Happy texturing!)

Paul, thanks for the support friend! :wavey:
I think I'm moving faster this weekend (updates to come in this day) but it is not fast enough! I have lots more to be done. Holidays you mention is something! A week extension would be some nice christmas gift from the challenge officials!

12 December 2004, 08:27 AM
Nice models you have there, i jsut wish i came across this thread a lot sooner. Keep up the good work:thumbsup:

12 December 2004, 08:49 AM
hey Mikey... THe Concept of that think is very creative I like it man wanna see it in 3d

12 December 2004, 09:13 PM (

Here is an Alien Face that is to be used as basis for 3 different types (as shown on image too). I've added some texture thoughts too. I want it to look like an elephant's skin but white. C&C more than welcome!

12 December 2004, 09:19 PM (

Here is the final model (I think) of the Council Member. Also started some texturing, this far I consider textures of head (mask) and the cloth underneath as final. Also have to think of some colors for the rest of his clothes. C&C always welcomed!

12 December 2004, 10:50 PM
hi Mike..
are this greenish cabels and stuff illuminating?
should look very interesting..
now can't say anything cos it's very early texturing stage.. i'll check it later to comment something..
keep it up and cheers mate..!

12 December 2004, 10:56 PM
Yeah!! great stuff:buttrock: I also think that these cables could illuminating... I think it would make him more mysterious if his appearance was partly covered by the light from the cables...

12 December 2004, 09:28 AM
Hey Mike nice start on texturing keep them coming cant wait to see more

those illuminations are looking good keep it up:thumbsup:

12 December 2004, 09:57 AM
Paul, arturro, Lelantos thanks for the support I really appreciate your motivation boosts!

Would you have any comments or suggestions concerning the alien face (open the bigger image to view some details 'cause from the small one on the post most details look like noise...) or coloring the main clothes of the Council Member? I'm really stuck especially with the Council Member!

Thanks again friends!

12 December 2004, 10:37 AM
Hi Mike............I would give the council members light clothes in both color and fabric.......And the key with them would be the illumination,I think you should keep them simple, soft light tones.......Give there garments a little tweak,a little twist, make them a little more un-even,non-symetrical,a little more worn.........And give them a very vibrant and intense ilumination.......Let this be there main hook........

The aliens should get a more overbearing appearance, stronger,a forehead and jaw that juts 9Sticks) out more......The forehead should get larger areas above and on the eye brow area........Larger skull, wider too.........Jaw line could get wider too, more menacing, more out of this World, right now they look too human.....unless of course this is what you want.......I just think a more stylised look would be the way to go.....but thats just me,this is your baby all the way Mike, you are doing a very nice job overall, and I just hope to help in some small way along the way..........Go at it hard,I think you are certanly on the right road, just get in some more tweaking.............Just like the rest of us......I'll be looking in again for more, all the best for now....:arteest:

12 December 2004, 04:32 PM
That´s some detailled work you present here....very impressing. Very!
Be carefull with the smooth areas on your buildings, seems like there´s some areas where you should work (maybe made by too many adges meeting in one point before sub. div. is applied...hope you understand my way of explaining:))
The alien face is really great, has life. The Council Member has a little more lifeless face, but so does some faces also in the real world.

Great work here, keep on the hard work.....And yes, you do have to make textures for every little detail................................................................

12 December 2004, 10:50 PM
Cool start to this creature. Very interesting. I want to see more!

12 December 2004, 12:26 AM
nice texturing work Mike, keep going and good luck.

12 December 2004, 10:07 PM
Thanks for the support and feedback! Been away on a business trip last day and now I'm back.

Virtuoso thanks a lot man for critiques and giving me some point to start! I'll adopt those as constractively possible ASAP!! :bounce:

Kragh thanks for the support and points on the buildings  . I'll look into them on texturing time, fixing those spots you pointed!

||) |V| |^| and uwil thanks for the supporting comments!

I plan tonight be the "long Council Member late (all) - nighter" I'll be back with updates on this strange Mafia fellow later!!

12 December 2004, 11:04 PM
Hi man! your Alien face u decided to go as i have read to a white kinda elephant skin...what bothers my imagination is that a creature with tottaly white skin has Zero i guess try to see if a little warm color works better to your character..again light color but not tottaly white..hope i work man...keep going!:)

12 December 2004, 10:59 AM
some cool designs u have here

and I read something form another thread... u a helloween fan ?

12 December 2004, 11:20 AM
Thanks for support Dim and Squibbit!
Unfortunatelly last night I couldn't make it with the Council guy, instead of working on the textures I started creating a new robe on him! :D

Regarding the alien face, I have this warm problem quite a while now....thanks for pointing it out Dim, I'll look into it asap I finish the Council Member (Planning on a birthday pic for myself and Lemog with this guy if finished!!)

Squibbit, thanks man....Actually not a real Helloween fan...more like a classic epic metal fan (Keeper of 7 Keys, mostly Manowar and some others).... I have a "Heart of Steel" animation idea in my head since 1992 (..smells like ficolo.. :) )

Hopefully coming soon with texture and model update on Council Member (this name is rather on I call him "Bob")....

CU soon!!

12 December 2004, 11:54 AM
o , I'm a big Helloween fan myself (there's even the pumpkin dude in my Space
Opera 2D entry , heh)

yea Manowar's great , too! You should listen to Dark Ride CD of Helloweens newer products ...also Better than Raw is a great CD.
anyways, have fun and see u later

12 December 2004, 06:34 PM
Mike Giannakopoulos Here is the final model (I think) of the Council Member. Also started some texturing, this far I consider textures of head (mask) and the cloth underneath as final. Also have to think of some colors for the rest of his clothes. C&C always welcomed!
Hey Mike, the Council Member costume is going well. Some of the elements show some originality (which is really hard in today's seen-it-all world). The shape of the head reminds me of the 'Gorn" from the original Star Trek series. I like your concept - looking forward to seeing it come together.

12 December 2004, 01:45 PM

the council member is looking pretty good... I'd like to suggest making him a bit taller, what do u think?

I like the freaky cables coming out of his head, great!

12 December 2004, 02:34 AM (

I stuck with Council Member (Bob) so I started texturing on SpitFire. Here's where I am so far. I believe tomorrow or the day after I'll be done with this one. All the glowing places are mental thrust amplifiers, I tried to keep the same color on the amp effect with the Council Member. C&C please...

12 December 2004, 03:48 AM
wow Mike.. nice updates..!
i like a lot how you made this hull look rusty..! this noise on the edges really looks good.. as well aluminium like texture for it.. looking forward to see texturing finished..
keep going my friend and cheers..

12 December 2004, 07:03 AM
• Thats what I call a real firespit! well done Mike! waiting for the 100%

12 December 2004, 08:00 AM
Very nice texturing i really like the spitfire
this will look extra cool with the final texturing:thumbsup:

my only crit is the glass looks a little plastic maybe adding a little reflection on it if you want to keep it with no transparency.
waiting to see the final keep it up mate:buttrock:

12 December 2004, 09:22 AM
Paul, Climax, Lelantos

Thanks for support guys! I see now (with the daylight, 'cause when I posted the image it was waaaayyy to late) that the wings have no rust on the final version will include some rust on wings too. Also the glow effect will be replaced with mental energy effect as seen in an early post in this thread...

Hope to see you soon with updates...:)

12 December 2004, 09:28 AM
Daniel, thanks for the support man! I was aiming at something different ..but couldn't avoid the robe cliche....:D

Versiden, thanks mate! I'm on a "heavy tweaking" with the Council Member so I'll give him a shot!

Thanks again mates!! :bounce:

12 December 2004, 10:04 AM
Spitfire with textures =........................

Really a wonderful piece of work.I like the color pallette and tones.........The design it's all looking very nice.........I am real happy to see this.......You are doing a really wonderful job here, and the efforts are showing really well for you Mike........You Greeks are work-horses.....And do your thing with some really nice results......Keep the very nice work coming as you are.......Nice once again,I'll be looking for more for sure............:buttrock: :arteest:

12 December 2004, 10:26 AM
Hi, Your advances project well and things this precise all my
encouragement for the continuation.

12 December 2004, 10:41 AM
Virtuoso - Thanks alot man for your continuing support & suggest & encouragement through the whole process! Really appreciate every word you say! I started looking into white robes with the Council Member .... :wip: ....and it seems to work well! Thanks again!

Tranchefeux - Thanks for your support mate! Keep it strong with your project coloring!! :bounce:

12 December 2004, 10:50 AM
SpitFire looks very promising! I would increase speculars of the middl epart of it, to make it more metallic.

Great glow in the engine! is it painted texture, or some 3d trick?

12 December 2004, 05:57 PM
hi...i think this ship is looking really cool i love how it looks from the side...nice work...
about the council memeber...i think youre doing it fine... this guy is going to look even better when he get poed...maybe u can cross his arms and cover the gloves with a big sleeves...i read some one was suggesting about doing him taller..and i think thats a good idea...
the work on the hair is great...he just need a few details to be fixed...i think his posture can give him a lot of personality too...ill be watchin your nice work friend...

12 December 2004, 09:30 PM
Great updates m8. You seem to have a great handle on the texturing of this craft. Has a very human feel to it. I will be looking for more, especially since I am stuck watching from the sidelines for the moment, btw if anyone sees Bill Gates in the near future please assassinate his ass for me eh? Damn winblowsitsselfuptomuchtocaregrrrrrrrrr.

12 December 2004, 07:19 AM
The latest update of the Spit is really fantastic man... I love it... maybe more transpancies for the canopy... but if there's nothing inside... you can keep like that...

today, no 3d for me...
I'm just here for only one thing... and certainly the most important for you today -> I wish you to have a real good fiesta with all your friends and familiy...

and for sure... UN JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE DE FRANCE :bounce:

12 December 2004, 08:34 PM (

I'm done texturing this one. I've changed the specular of the metallic parts and increased the color on the pilot glass (sorry...nothing inside!).
I also started working a bit on the FX of this one. Added some lights to fake electric glows on hull, added some emitters on wings and back propulsion and last but not least I played with the mental energy effect around the wings and on the propulsion system. The whole ship is glued and animate-able. That's for now! C&C always welcomed :)

12 December 2004, 08:53 PM
Thanks everyone! :)

arturro - Thanks mate! I've changed the speculars in the metallic parts as you can see....maybe I'll do it again when I put this baby in the final scene...The glow is a simple 3DS Max post FX

rattlesnake - Thanks for the support mate! The Council Member is at this point my weakness!! I'm "tweaking" him for some time now and still nothing to show! The final pose is supposed to be rather static..but I'm always open to suggestions! I've thought of something more dynamic for him but not for this comp... Thanks again!

||) |V| |^| - Thanks man! Hope you'll be back again soon! As for your problem I'd suggest taking a look at SUN submission thread (George Pourikas can't find a link right now!)....he could give you a fair solution to your Bill Gates problem....

Lemog, my friend! Thank you a thousand times! Today I spent little time on 3D too...until NOW of course!!:)

OK,OK that's for now! Coming later with some updates.... :wavey:

12 December 2004, 08:58 PM
Hi there terraarc!
Whoah, the SpitFire rocks man :buttrock: The new color of the glass is much better, love the glows and the mental energy around the wings, just superb! One crit dough, IMO you should add more bump to the ship textures, cause now its quite flat first view in the picture, but of course its not necisary if you will do the final render without the closeup of the ship.
Thumbs up!

12 December 2004, 09:57 PM
I like the engine emissions but I cannot say that the energy field looks quite right. Something about the shape I think bothers me. Anyway, just my opinion, otherwise it looks awesome man. :) Happy birthday and keep up the great work.

12 December 2004, 10:31 PM
Hey Mike ,
Your story is very indepth , I will have to read it again . The models all look very good , you have a creative mind. I like the characters as well , I do think that some of the clothing on the characters are too monotone(single color). Try having several colors on one piece of clothing , I think this would help make them look a little more natural.
Again your doing a great job.

12 December 2004, 03:25 AM
Very nice model, very believable, but I'm wondering what're those strange bubble-like things surrounding you ship? Looks really strange to me, but maybe it's because you haven't finished that part yet.

In any case great work!Cheers!

12 December 2004, 06:29 AM
great update with SpitFire Mike..! looks very futuristic..!
and most important.. maybe it's too late but anyway - Happy Birthday my Friend..!
keep going mate and cheers..

12 December 2004, 07:33 AM
ooh! I have to say that with textures your work just entered another level - wonderful! The colors, the athmospheric stuff makes it warm and a bit cartoony. Really nice - I like this a lot :applause:

12 December 2004, 12:33 PM
Hi Mike.................Well another step forward, and a nice one.Congrats on the texture job,a very nice job, really nice color choice and the tones work well..........Your putting in some great effort and real nice results to go with it.......Keep it going, your Space opera is coming along real nicely......:arteest:

12 December 2004, 09:49 PM (

Here is a second model of the defensive fleet. I like a lot the idea of this ship and I hope the image is quite explenatory. Also included a human figure dummy like a size reference. C&C always welcomed!

12 December 2004, 10:10 PM
Hello to everyone!

Kaksht - Thanks for the support mate! I think I'll leave some tweaking on the texture for the final image...the time is really a pressure!!

||) |V| |^| - Thanks! Really appreciate your comments. The shape is rather temporal at this moment (basically a simple two sided mesh with a simple material over it and a noise applied to case I hit some animation with this baby!!) I'm thinking of using some vertex painting for transparencies make the shape more blurry and not that defined. Right now it's more like a placeholder...Thanks again!

mmoir - Thanks for the encouragement! The character IS some problem to me at this point and it's under a "heavy tweaking" session as I write....appreciate your coloring suggestion...I'll give a shot for sure!!

keetmun - Thanks! The bubbles is a humble start on exaust fumes...:D ....I'll definetely work more on this "Effect" ...thanks for pointing it out!

Paul, thanks for your kind words!!

Gunilla - Thanks mate!

Virtuoso - Thanks for continuous support!! :bounce:

Thanks to all again!! Keep on rockin' CG- talkers!!

12 December 2004, 09:35 AM
quite ironic to associate a butterfly with something that destorys ;p

respect to the extra effort you put in to make the wings functional, very cool..

interested to see the textures on this... would it be anything like a butterfly?

12 December 2004, 04:24 PM
man can't believe i missed your last update really cool texturing over there i like it a lot

and the butterfly bomber rocks awesome:thumbsup:

you are on the right track here keep em coming:bounce:

12 December 2004, 05:39 PM
Great update man. I love the step by step post of the butterfly. You can see that doing a work in progress this manor takes a bit of extra time eh? Hence the reason I had to stop for a bit to get some mad modeling done. It seems you have been quite busy working on great stuff. I look forward to seeing more as the days creap on forward and closer to the finish line.

12 December 2004, 07:39 PM
Very nice indeed. The step by step is cool... Are you planning on having several in the render in different phases of "flapping"?

12 December 2004, 12:22 AM
Thanks everyone! :)

Versiden, thanks for your kind words mate! Actually naming came quite natural..had to think something not so warish for the defensive fleet and this baby's wings were opening and a "butterfly" :) On the texturing part I'll try not to exaggerate the butterfly feeling...:D

Lelantos euxaristw!

||) |V| |^| , thanks mate! Unfortunatelly nothing new this day from my side...I've been straggling....errrr "heavy tweaking" with the Council Member (..have to find a name!!) ...and no news currently I'm doing some building texturing....hopefully is two days the most I'll have a building textured here for C&C ...

Hammerch, thanks man! Actually I'm thinking of having some three of them in the lift of flapping phases near the cam and a few more in the distance attacking the "Hive"...thanks again for your encouragement!

See you soon..... :)

12 December 2004, 01:35 AM
Nice bomber, i knew butterflies were dangerous. Can't wait to see what texure you'll give it. And I thought Council Member Bob was perfect for a name.

12 December 2004, 01:47 AM
hey...the bomber look nice...the design is very nice too...well done...looking forward for textures on it:)

12 December 2004, 11:17 AM
Butterfly bomber........................Will the wings have such a beautiful color tone that all the beings being attacked be hypnotized, and not able to move until the Butterfly vessel blows them up.;) ...................I look for those textures,I hope they come out as well as your last ones Mike.:arteest:

12 December 2004, 12:11 PM
ace4016, thanks for the support man! Currently Bob is resting under the wrecked Sparrow of Dim! But stay alert he'll resurrect soon!

rattlesnake, thanks for encouragement mate!

Virtuoso, thanks! About your idea......well...eeerrr.....I never thought of it that way but it'll be a nice twist!! Unless some Vulture ship gets quickly over it and "bites" hard!! LOL! Thanks for constant support and extra boost! (Last night I hitted a 5 AM.....I'm learning....)

Currently working on a building texture which hopefully will be up later today or early tomorrow....

Thanks again CG-fellows!!:bounce:

12 December 2004, 12:15 PM
Hi there! Very nice model. And nice way of presenting it. My only crit is the scale. For me it should be bigger in comparsion with the human. It's a bomber, so it should have some space for bombs, missles, sometimes for transporting troops, vehicles, etc.

12 December 2004, 12:24 PM
Thanks arturro! :)

Don't know why but I think it's scale is fine. I didnt' initially thought of it as means of transportation troops or vehs, and the bombs I had in mind where mainly plasma bombs (placed in the middle two front lines of guns) which will fire directly to the enemy with a great rate (like a chaingun)......I'll think over it and feed you with some updates....

Thanks again for C&C!! :bounce: :bounce:

12 December 2004, 01:42 PM
Keep it up!! great work!the rebel fleet is rocking cool!!!I LOVE IT!!!
I see a lot of good stuff here!! Both modeling and rendering.

12 December 2004, 11:33 PM
Keep up the hard work, everything is looking awesome!

12 December 2004, 05:36 AM
hmmm... I forget to said you that your Butterfly Bomber is great man... I'm waiting the textures now

12 December 2004, 11:27 PM (

OK,OK here is some texturework on Grande Building _01. I'm spending some time on this building developing the textures. Here are some major parts textured. On this building I work only procedurals so that I'll use same textures and parts to other buildings too. Of course some parts need extra attention and love (like the docks on the top, and some platforms). The details shown are at final resolution. C&C really appreciated!

12 December 2004, 11:33 PM
Bravo! The level of details here is killing me:bounce: amazing, really amazing! When I look on such constructions, I hate this feeling which came appears... the reason is that then I now that I have to remodel my city, because it looks funny in compersion with this:)

Great! Waiting for more

12 December 2004, 11:35 PM
OZ, Hammerch and Lemog thanks! Really appreciate your support and encouragement!

"Some words from the bride..." (INTRO from KILL BILL Vol. 2 Soundtrack)

As you see I've started developing the building's textures. The above image is my current standing, of course some compression problems are present but most of it is accurate. I would really appreciate your comments on the way I'm heading!!

Thanks again! :wavey:

12 December 2004, 11:39 PM
arturro, you caught me! :) Thanks for your kind words mate!

Man I feel exactly the same when I'm looking at your wonderful composition-lighting-texturing terrain and atmosphere!

12 December 2004, 06:54 AM
holy cow!

very nice

Lots to be done yet!
are u insane?

very great work with those textures man!..i feel like crap now...but very happy for your work:thumbsup::thumbsup:

12 December 2004, 07:38 AM
I liek the way your going wiht your yexturiong on the building, looks great. I'd conintue doing what you are doing with the textures for the building, looks appealing to me.

12 December 2004, 08:28 AM
Very nice texturing update. Wow, I really love the intense amount of textures you have goingo on here. Keep up the good work.

12 December 2004, 09:05 AM
rattlesnake, ace4016, ||) |V| |^| thanks for supportive comments!!:thumbsup:

12 December 2004, 09:21 AM
Man that's a sick level of detail you got there! I especially like the part where the fighter ships(I presume) come out of. Just waiting for it all to come together.

12 December 2004, 09:30 AM
This is some great texturig over here great detail your building has gone to top stair for me awesome man just awesome:thumbsup:

12 December 2004, 01:04 PM
Hi terraarc

Some really great work here. I like your designs alot, especially the ships. Your latest image is very good, can't think of much to crit. Maybe you could try getting some dirtmaps on there?

Really great work so far though, keep it up! :)

12 December 2004, 01:37 PM
I really love the last building man.... <greek mode> Mprabo re patrida.. poli kali douleia... </greek mode> rock on:buttrock:

12 December 2004, 01:47 PM
Hey Mike ,

The texture on the building looks very nice,I think once it is in the final scene it will fit seamlessly into the scene. I would maybe add a bit of color to the white exterior , just a thought.
Good job with this.

12 December 2004, 07:10 AM
the lights work really well to show off its size
textures are friggin awesome so far, waiting for more m8:buttrock:

12 December 2004, 07:38 AM (

OK,OK...I've brought the textures to a final state (ver 1.0) at this time. That explains the "final" on image and Title. More texture tweaking will be done when all placed in a scene! Good thing is that almost everything in image is procedurals so the next buildings will quickly be textured, small extra job will be done if needed of course! Time to move on :)

12 December 2004, 07:45 AM
keetmun, Lelantos, Eagle_e7, icedeyes, mmoir, Versiden really, really thank you! And in greek of course "EYXAPISTW POLY!".
Mmoir, appreciate your idea on dirtying things up! Fortunately I've predicted an extra level of noise just for that  I thought it looked OK with the color variation I've given (a tint blue and another tint dark orange) but, as I can see it rather looks I'll fix that when enter the composition or finalize scene lighting...

Some things went off in the final render, I'm reffering to the black rectangles in the middle of the construct, but I'll try fixing them later (do you think it might be a memory issue? 'Cause I've assigned a certain texture to that area....)

Thanks to everyone again!!

Keep it coming faster and faster! :buttrock:

12 December 2004, 07:48 AM
hey that building looks very massive man I want to see it in the composition :) Wish ya luck

12 December 2004, 08:40 AM
i like the mass of details at the building. hope th see it textured soon. keep it up!!

12 December 2004, 09:07 AM
UR LAST POST ROCKS!!!amazing detalied building!Im very interested about ur final entry!i'll be back!Keep it up!Smart work!

12 December 2004, 02:28 PM
That building is shaping up very nicely my friend. Keep up the good work. I love it. W00t, rock on!:buttrock:

12 December 2004, 02:50 PM
Texture looks great, just one question: Is the right side of the building suppose to look plain white like that?

12 December 2004, 06:18 PM
Hi, eh! good texture on your lathe, congratulation, I awaits the
continuation, good road.

12 December 2004, 06:34 PM
Great work Terraarc. I'm anxious for more!

12 December 2004, 06:54 PM
Nice work on the textures!

Keep it up! :)

12 December 2004, 03:20 AM
Keep it coming strong Mike, your getting there, closer to that finishline.Lots of texture work and overall large scale you have here, but looks like you are getting it done, and done well......Best of luck as you get into the last 30% of the challenge......I'll be watching, you know that.:arteest: :arteest:

12 December 2004, 03:35 AM
zzzaaannggg... great modeling.. i couldnt model a building if a plug in did it for me... great job... lookin good on the rest of your picture! =)

12 December 2004, 01:27 PM (

OK,OK...did a little retouching on the Concept. Removed several buildings...current count is up to six (already modeled 3)...Also tried to follow the thirds rule....ground point is defined by distant rock islands....C&C always welcomed!

12 December 2004, 01:38 PM
Hello everyone!

Divaise, MogodtBackAgain, -OZ-, ||) |V| |^|, ace4016, Tranchefeux, claudio_jordao, Eagle_e7, Virtuoso, vrhead thanks you all alot for your encouragement!!

The time is really pressing a lot!! :banghead:

As you see I've updated a little the concept...lower deck in front is to be used as a platfrom for taking off Butterfly Bombers...some pilots will also run to their ships while their commander will yell at them showing the Hive over about....

Hope the ground level is quite clear on the 2/5 of the image now too.... (Please crit..)

My plans for today is to finish the red guy....(Council Member still depreciated...) So this guy is the Emperor....I want to finish the whole of him model and textures too coming later with updates.... :wip::arteest:

Keep on rockin' everyone! :buttrock:

12 December 2004, 01:44 PM
i like the sense of space in the composition - it gives a sense of real massivity (is that a word?). the building is great - but it needs something inequivicable to define precisely how big it actually is.

12 December 2004, 03:07 PM
HI there! Camera angle is great. It makes this scene very interesting. But I would change framing a bit. The top of the composition is too empty for me. I would move the upper right corner proporcionaly to the left and down, and this what because of that would dissapear I would move to the left... I hope that you undertood me, becasue I' mnot sure if I can understand my description:)

12 December 2004, 05:50 PM (

This is the red guy in the composition. Currently I've modelled the upper part. Moving to lower part and clothing, then some mental hair and a proper Band...then of to texturing! I've programed the whole process for today...C&C always welcomed...

12 December 2004, 05:55 PM
ereitz - thanks mate! The scale will hopefully pop up when the puzzle set together...Some mist will be used and several sship flying around all these buildings will help alot! Thanks again!

Arturro - Thanks for comments mate! I think I've got it right...:D..I'll give it a shot!

See you soon I hope with more Emperor updates! :wip::arteest:

12 December 2004, 06:45 PM
Making impressive progress here Mike. The composition looks really good with the blocks, perhaps it could work with less of those islands but it's hard to say right now.

Red guy model looks good so far - looking forward to the textures! Keep going

12 December 2004, 10:54 PM (

OK,OK a bit more work on the Emperor. Some more modelling and then moving to textures! :)

12 December 2004, 10:56 PM
Gunilla, thnx for the encouragement mate!

12 December 2004, 12:42 AM
Waouww excellent work!

Excellent modeling, texture and effects for now!!
And the concept is cool too!

The emperor is coming very cool, nice style, i like it!!

Nothing else to say for now, it's a very good work.
I'm waiting to see update!!

keep going!!

12 December 2004, 12:58 AM
Looks like you've been working hard all day. Good start on the Emperor, i have nothing to C&C on....yet. Compostion test looks good too, can't wait to see the real models in place.

12 December 2004, 12:58 AM
great style! I like him a lot, especially the head design. Only legs look strange to me. I'm waiting for more and wish you more time than I have:)

12 December 2004, 02:44 AM
Hi terraarc,

I like your composition test, seems to flow nicely. Your character looks good aswell, looking forward to the textures.

12 December 2004, 08:22 AM
Heya it's been a while, glad to see so much progress!

The new comp looks absolutely fantastic, the part where the buildings seem to spill out totally kicks ass! You got me all excited now. As for the emperor I feel the legs could be a bit longer, unless u have something in mind later on.

12 December 2004, 02:08 PM
Hey Mike,
The emperor model looks good, has a tough guy, warrior type look to him. Keep working at this it is looking good.

12 December 2004, 03:17 PM

12 December 2004, 10:32 PM
Great progress in here. Like the Grande Building and its texture very much, lots of details goving on here. As for the emperor character, I think it has some problems in proportions, a little cartoon feeling. But that´s probably because it looks human(the body), and I measure proportions to a human body. So maybe this alien person just looks that way...:)

Thx for the continuing support in my entry, totally cool!!!

12 December 2004, 11:43 PM

Thank you all for your support and comments!! :)

Wishing the best of your dreams to come true!

The Emperor is progressing somewhat slower....hopefully I'll have some textured semi-fixed on most of your comments version tomorrow....with a more extensive reply as well....:)

12 December 2004, 12:53 AM

Keep up the great work as well.

12 December 2004, 02:47 PM (

Here is some progress on texturing this fella....I heed some heavy crits and suggestions concerning colors!!
Started a bit on lighting and texturing the ground mostly used in the forground of the image....

12 December 2004, 02:53 PM
Well, finally! I made some progress visible and open to c&c!! :)

Next steps, while waiting for some suggestions on this guy (currently i find him to red but can't think of something) I'll work on some buildings' textures and ground textures too....hope this goes faster....Already have 2 modeled buildings to texture and hoping for the other 3 until Thursday....

Cheers to everyone! :wavey:

12 December 2004, 11:52 AM
This will be a nice addition to your other creations here Mike........I like the cloak color tone.....I think the ground textures should be larger, not so many tiny pieces of tiles.More rough,bumped,displaced...........The patterns take away from the character....At least in my view......

.......Keep it coming, your space opera continues to get to it's potential Mike.Hard work and great effort are paying off for you.....I'll wait to see more before giving more thoughts.......For now perhaps a slight bend of one knee or one foot slightly forward from the other would be more of a dynamic pose....a slight adjustment? Ok get back to it Mike........ :arteest:

12 December 2004, 08:32 PM (

OK,OK..I've finished texturing all the building I've already modelled....remaining 3 more buildings for the final image...hopefully a full day's work...Right now I'll continue with the council Member and some sship texturing...

12 December 2004, 08:56 PM
Hey Mike ,
The emporer looks great and I really like the staff he has in his right hand. The building textures look really good too. Look forward to the rest of the image. You may want to give some thought as to having slightly different colors to the buildings , the white maybe to eye grabbing . Great progress here.

12 December 2004, 09:07 PM
Great work man... don't forget the deadline... go go go :bounce:

12 December 2004, 09:12 PM
wow, looks really cool. Just some advice, you might want to see more of the emperor's face in the final version. Even if you only saw the side, the back of his head is kinda boring.

12 December 2004, 11:32 PM
Hi Mike

So you want to get comments on colors for the emperor...damn, I think thats the hardest thing myself, I mean, to find colors. I would prefer some stronger colors, they all have the look of too many washes, if you get my point. But I like the overall colorpalette, just strengthen them a little. Just my opinion.
I really like your buildings, as already said earlier. Maybe make some differences between the buildings, tend to look a little too alike, but not a strong issue here.

Keep it coming, happy new year

12 December 2004, 09:46 AM
Thanks everyone! :)

Virtuoso, man thanks for your constant support and comments, the tiles should be a lot bigger for sure! Thanks for pointing it out!

mmoir, thanks for support. I hope I'll have some time to work on the textures of each building when finishing all of them...right now the next 3 are sitting strong on my neck and throat now!!!

Lemog, thanks for the support my French friend!

steffenoid, thanks for dropping some suggestions....the back of the head is going to be covered with some mental hair ending up to a braid...I hope I'll add this in 3d and not post work.....:D

Kragh, thanks for suggestions on the emperor, really appreciate that! It really is a hard thing picking up colors....I'll try buy him new clothes ("King's new clothes" the fairy tale....:applause: )

Thanks again to all....have a happy new year....full of pleasant surprises and successes!! :wavey:

12 December 2004, 10:48 AM

Hi terraarc,

Just stopping by to say keep up the good work, looking forward to your final image! :)

Something came up along with the new year that is keeping me busy almost 24/7.....I'll try to find some time in order to finish on time, it's a pity to not fight for a "final image" after all these images I've already submitted...

Hope I'll manage some updates and some finals just on time!! :bounce:

Best wishes on best outcomes to everyone!! :)

01 January 2005, 08:17 PM
Just like me. I just don´t have the energy to do both...But I really hope you´ll manage to make a final, a lot of promising stuff here. The emperor´s clothing is fine, even though I had some issues there. Go work on some unfinished stuff, and make it on time. And thx for you hardcore support in my thread. Has been great to get all the comments. Hope to see(read:)) you again in somer other challenge or similar...

Go, go, go

OK,OK..found some time today and started working to a final for the lower right corner..Here is a docking platform with some ships on it...The plan for tonight is to finish the whole scene lying in the specific corner...Currently working on the butterfly Bomber's textures....hopefully some low-poly pilots will fill the image too...
