Eric Claeys has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Latest Update: Final Image: Guarding the Gateway (

After having Rhino3D crash for the 20th time due to lack of memory, I finally got a decent render. The planet was rendered separately in Flamingo, altered in photoshop, and inserted into the image. Overall, I like how the image turned out. I would have loved for the scene to take place over an ancient ruined city, but that idea came too late. I tried adding explosions and missiles - in 3d and photoshop, but they really took away from the image - so I left them out. Good luck to all the other entries and thanks for all the comments!

10-19-2004, 05:13 AM (

This is just an initial sketch for one of my ships. More to come!

10-19-2004, 08:51 AM
oi, i like it :), where can i order those? ^^

10-20-2004, 04:48 AM (

This is just a quick idea I had of a moon pulled out of orbit in the middle of a mecha conflict - one of the armies going a bit overkill...

10-21-2004, 05:32 AM (

I think this is the idea I am going to run with.
Basically, a large scout ship flees from a giant monster as the military attempts to collapse the ancient gateway as hundreds of demonic creatures poor into our dimension.

10-21-2004, 07:14 AM
Hi Eric,

looks really dynamic

Exciting to watch how you´ll develop those creatures.

Have fun

10-21-2004, 08:36 AM
Beautiful sketches Eric... I'm waiting the following impatiently...

10-22-2004, 12:11 AM (

starting on the scout ship...

10-22-2004, 12:13 AM (

more work on the ship...

10-22-2004, 12:14 AM

Looks really fun, kind of like Buffy the Vampire slayer, with the whole portal thing. Good luck.
and the modeling is looking good as well as the line drawing of the ship.

10-22-2004, 03:34 AM (

Another update of the scout ship.

Modeling in Rhino3D 2.0. I'll do the texturing and rendering in Maya. Thanks for the comments.

10-22-2004, 04:19 AM
looks really cool actually, looking forward to more great work :)

Really loving your concept so far, quite impressive. Can't wait to see how it turns out, you are working very quickly.... best wishes to you.

10-22-2004, 04:30 AM
Nice progress, Eric. I gather you'll be using mental ray for the rendering. One question: I know that mental ray has a 2 million triangle limit in XSI, but am uncertain whether you've got the same limitation in Maya. If so, how do you plan to keep the count down with such a complex scene?

10-22-2004, 04:34 AM
Wow, now thats a great loking ship and i like the idea a lot  Keep up the good work!

10-22-2004, 05:04 AM
Well it's not the most original concept, but it could look excellent. My only critique at the moment : your ship looks a little like a chainsaw right now. Might look just fine after it's textured w/ windows, details & the like, though. Keep up the pace.

10-22-2004, 06:30 AM
The concept sketch looks cool. The ship design has a nice feel to it as well. I'd love to see some surface detail on the smooth outer shells of the ship. Can't wait to see more detailed demon designs as you flesh them out!

10-22-2004, 07:54 AM
cool concept.. modelling looking gr8 so far.

looking forward to see the monster modelled.

10-22-2004, 09:57 AM
I love the demonic portal idea. That really stands apart from the norm, modeling looks good so far. I'm not sure if you've fixed the image aspect ration but i would suggest a wide anamorphic view, it'll look very good with the horizontal motions you have in your last concept.

10-22-2004, 11:40 AM
I just love that scout ship!

10-22-2004, 04:02 PM
I know it's still early, but can we see a wireframe? Your modeling expertise is very sound, do you work professionally as a modeler?

10-22-2004, 04:48 PM
I just wanted to say ,your scoutship designs are simply sumptuous, Your use of varied rectalinear and organic form is wonderful and fits well with the clean metallic look youve picked for them. WHat modelling methodology did you use for these? May I ask what your reasoning for doing the texturing and rendering in Maya but not the modelling is?

10-22-2004, 04:55 PM
HA HA, cool monster I like it. Looks like a ton of fun. and you ship looks like it's comming along really fast. good luck!

10-23-2004, 07:48 AM
Yo Eric, whats up! It's Kevin from school congrats on the job and all. This model looks great as always, can't wait to see the rest put together.

10-23-2004, 10:06 PM
Honestly I like the chaos dimesion idea better than the other! Modeling looks great! Keep it up and good luck!

10-24-2004, 06:35 AM (

Another update - starting on the engine. I'll add more detail as soon as I finish blocking it in. It's all in nurbs at the moment, but I think I should be able to limit my polygon count enough.

Dom: I agree, I think the final image will be pretty wide.

Hie Spike: I'll have some wireframes eventually. ;) I work professionally as an illustrator - I guess most of my 3D stuff is a hobby. (for now...)

Xeniusascendant: I didn't really have a 'methodology' to my modeling - just that I wanted something that looked reasonably fast and not too bulky - hence the exposed internal details. I am using rhino only because it is the first modeling program I learned and I have far more experience in it than Maya. I am learning Maya and intend to use for modeling in the future. The reason I am texturing, rendering, and special effects in Maya is because rhino is extremely limited in those departments.

Lord Sphere: Hopefully it will look less like a chainsaw when I am finished. ;P

Good luck on your entry Kevin.

Thanks for all the comments!

10-24-2004, 07:22 AM
excellent ship design.. looking extremely cool.. it deffinitely needs proper environment..
good luck Eric..

10-24-2004, 07:29 AM
Wow! great modeling. very clean lines and appealing proportions. The "nacels" or thrusters are awfully treky but it's hard to escape all likeness to what inspires us.

The worm hole/gateway to an evil dimension is great. that would make an epic sci-fi novel cover.

10-24-2004, 07:37 AM
Well, eric, what can I say? Your models are excellent, as usual. what kind of textures are you gonna put on them?

10-24-2004, 07:47 AM
great job yet... beautiful model  I imagine the quality that will follow...

10-24-2004, 07:48 AM
I like the quality of your space ship. It has a nice feel to it. I can't wait to see your progress. :)

10-24-2004, 09:07 AM
Wow! Great ship. Keep it up!!!:bounce:

10-24-2004, 09:21 AM
Great job.
Your ship looks fantastic, and above all it is very original concept of space-ship.
Keep up the good work...

10-24-2004, 10:50 AM
best ship on here right now  keep it up

10-25-2004, 01:57 AM
Well, I gotta say thats some top notch modeling. Not to mention a sweet design! Looks very clean and professional.

Very well done! Keep em coming :).

10-25-2004, 01:58 AM
nice modelling and concept. like to see more.

10-25-2004, 02:08 AM
Your scout ship looks really good so far , and I like your concept as well.

10-25-2004, 02:25 AM
Hey Eric!!, I thik your space ship is very well done, continue the good work .....

¿could you post a wire? ..... thanks

Your style of detailing the ship reminds me of the artwork done for the game 'Starflight 2'. One could definitely see that the box artwork and accompanying ship chart were done by a professional illustrator. Keep up the excellent work, but don't forget the function of the composition.

10-26-2004, 01:15 AM
Very nice design,...

It is VERY ICONIC. It seems you have some expireance in illustration. Your ship design is very 'beefy'. It looks like the space version of the American "muscle" car. As far as texturing goes, I would rather see you keep the ships "clean" and shiny. It really fits them. Cant wait to see what you have cooking up for the organic deamons!

Buena suerte amigo!

10-26-2004, 01:27 AM
Rhinomaster in da house

look great

10-26-2004, 07:29 AM
awsome concept. Run, run the monster is coming. Can't wait to see how you are going to do the portal.

MaX

10-26-2004, 09:19 AM
good stuff

good job on the modeling

10-27-2004, 01:28 AM
Very nice, Love the ship. Can't wait to see more.

11-02-2004, 05:32 PM
Hello EricClaeys,

The design of your spaceship is quite original, in my opinion; and the second coloured sketch is also evocative. it possible to see more sketches of your "global vision", I mean, how do you think to connect elements on the composition...a few simple sketches of other models...etc...just to organize the work from a general point of view, and not simply starting from the straight modelling. Thank you. Have a nice work.

11-12-2004, 06:12 AM (

Sorry, I have been really busy lately and haven't had a chance to post anything new. I did a bit more work on the ship...

11-12-2004, 06:14 AM (

here's a wireframe for ya ;)

11-12-2004, 12:39 PM
Woah, that ship looks awesome, really cool! Great modeling, lots of wires, and the whole sjips looks very great, thumbs up!

11-12-2004, 06:26 PM
very nice, if you were producing a 2D entry, that wire frame would be very fun to paint :)

I really like the ship design, very unique. Keep up the great work!

11-12-2004, 08:44 PM
Great design on that ship, and flawless modeling. Very cool stuff...

11-13-2004, 01:19 AM
wicked concept and modeling...

11-13-2004, 04:37 AM (

Just a quick ~5 min semi-detailed sketch for the military ship in my scene. I like to come up with my more precise details as I model. This type of ship is obviously more heavily armored and carries a huge payload of missiles among other weapons. It has a large collaspable docking bay on top. Thanks for the comments everyone! Enjoy...

11-13-2004, 04:47 AM
Forgot to mention - the small sketch on the bottom is for the rockets. They are highly manueverable with exchangeable warheads: low impact, high impact, camera/sensor probe, cluster/micro missiles, and EMP. Other weapons on the ship enclude various machine guns, nuclear missiles, RAIL guns, and volatile plasma cannons.

11-13-2004, 04:57 AM
:buttrock: great work so far!!!

best luck

11-13-2004, 07:49 PM
wow detailed designs, detailed models. your doing good.

11-17-2004, 05:32 AM (

I started on the military ship. I'd liked to make it pretty bulky and a bit more detailed than the scout ship. Enjoy!

11-18-2004, 04:22 AM
The modeling looks great as always. I still think you should highlight the one area in blue. Think it over, let me know. Love Ya Babe

01-06-2005, 05:49 AM (

I got sick of the other military ship and decided to try a different one...

01-06-2005, 05:51 AM (

I started the modeling process. I am a lot more satisfied with this one than its predecessor. Enjoy!

01-06-2005, 09:18 AM
Cool Stuff Here Welldone Model.......

01-06-2005, 09:43 AM
I said it more than once on renderosity, is there a limit to the detail you add to models?
or do you just go on till your puter(s) starts to moan & cry

more than impressive:thumbsup:

01-13-2005, 04:13 AM (

Hopefully I can get some serious time in to finish before the deadline...

01-13-2005, 04:17 AM (

here's a sketch for the main demon creature...

01-13-2005, 05:11 AM
Not Bad ....

01-13-2005, 05:34 AM
First time here. Now that I have finished I have time to browse other's work

Your concept is wonderful. The fact that the ships are trying to destroy that portal reminds me of my favorite SIM game: Freespace 2

Anywayz, that ship is a killer, and your demon there is screaming to be modeled. Good luck!

01-15-2005, 06:53 PM (

I started the modeling on the main demon creature. I liked the lighting on the right (though I realize there should be some subtle light coming from the right to show a little detail).

01-15-2005, 10:54 PM (

the demon is pretty much finished - added a little bit of texturing and lighting...

01-16-2005, 02:28 AM (

sketch of the collapsable fighters...

01-16-2005, 02:36 AM (

they'll be pretty small in the scene, so they are not too detailed.

01-16-2005, 05:41 AM (

Rendering the portal... I thought it had a nice dark feel to it.

01-16-2005, 06:14 AM (

playing with a little lighting and how I want the creature to arrive through the portal. Still rushing - about a day and a half left...

01-16-2005, 07:30 AM (

Just doing a bit of lighting and texturing.

Unfortunately I just realized that I wont be able to submit a final image as I do not have access to an ftp. Granted I am annoyed, but nothing I can do about that now. I'll post a final image in the regular gallery.

Good luck to all the entries!

01-16-2005, 08:07 AM
why dont you have access ? I thought you just upload it to
the cgtalks servers.

c`mon, your stuff is too promising to be left lying around
on your harddrive. :)

go for it !

01-16-2005, 08:17 AM
you have done a relay nice texture and lighting ....bravooo:bounce:

01-16-2005, 09:28 AM
If they run the same procedure this time as they did with Machineflesh you don't need to have any FTP servers of your own. You upload the final image from your HD to CGTalk's FTP, that's all.

01-16-2005, 05:27 PM
Yeah, I just read over the instructions for the final entry - looks like I can still play. Yay!
Thanks everybody!

01-16-2005, 10:55 PM
very good modeling & texturing skills

01-17-2005, 01:18 AM (

I have my basic composition rendered. I'm doing a bit of effects in photoshop. I'll also insert a planet in the lower left. Enjoy!

01-17-2005, 06:01 AM (

After having Rhino3D crash for the 20th time due to lack of memory, I finally got a decent render. The planet was rendered separately in Flamingo, altered in photoshop, and inserted into the image. Overall, I like how the image turned out. I would have loved for the scene to take place over an ancient ruined city, but that idea came too late. I tried adding explosions and missiles - in 3d and photoshop, but they really took away from the image - so I left them out. Good luck to all the other entries and thanks for all the comments!

01-17-2005, 06:54 AM
That, my friend, is incredible!!!
I really like the colors and the excellent marriage of perspective with composition. The portal and emerging beast are truly unique and fit well in the scene. It looks like a professional poster I'd see for some 3D movie. Without a doubt, you are a master!

01-20-2005, 08:30 PM
Thanks Sharga. I emphasized the perspective to show the scale of things and direct your attention to the portal/chase. I figured the oranges and blues in the image would give it a nice contrast. The portal vortex meshes turned out alright- I was worried that they wouldn't have the right effect.

01-21-2005, 07:13 AM
hey hey man... great entry and very good composition I think... best wishes for the following Eric

01-27-2005, 12:58 AM
Great composition, like the dragon creatur, and the ship. i think you could've put mor dents or something on the ship, they look clean. :) Good luck though!

02-16-2005, 11:31 PM

I really like your composition. Rhino 3d is a really nice, easy to use modeler.
Like to see more of your work in future. How did you get the geometry
to maya ? As OBJ or IGES ?

05-28-2005, 06:52 PM
WOOT! I thought I'd lost ya boyo. :) Great work Eric. Long time my friend, long time. Cheers!
