Here's a little update on her face and textures. Colors seemed to have been influenced a bit by the season! :) The white's stay, but the will most likely be changed in the final.

Is he the evil emperor or the loving father? Actually, he’s both. This is the story of a galaxy on the verge of transformation. An old race is being over-powered by a new race and the old emperor cannot let this happen. In this climactic scene, the faithful daughter of the old emperor faces off against her only true love – the greatest warrior of the new race…more to come!!! Of course, this is a sketch of the Old Emperor!

I like your work. You are doing a good job making it feel like a movie or book cover. I feel I should say that you should be careful with the whole "sabre" thing, you don't want to look too much like Star Wars. Perhaps futuristic metal swords? or a gun in one hand and a blade in the other, and have them grabbing each other's wrists like a struggle scene?
Anyway, excellent job with everything. I usually don't critique people but it is mandatory to talk to others on this forum, and if I say anything at all it should be something of use and meaning.

I like the concept a lot. Is the 2 figures fighting with the swords in the forground supposed to be the Emperor's daughter and the "New Race" warrior? (judging from your close-up sketch of the 2 figures' heads)

YES!!! That is absolutely correct. The figures are the daughter of the emporer - the princess, and the "Hero" of the new race. They are forced to fight for duty, but alas they have found love in the worste of places. Now, what will be the outcome....

hm. It's an appropriate story, more opera than most of the entries I've seen... I'm just not a big fan of floating heads. But if you must go the floating-head route, I hope you'll at least make the emperor look old and wise. Somehow I think an old, wise floating head is easier to digest than a younger, more masculine one. That being said, I suspect your concept will translate into 3d quite well.

OK well you did make the suggestion so I'm here :D . To be honest I liked the first composition better it had more focus, everything in that last composition is very central an d I feel it's killing it, I'd maybe rearrange the figures in the background so there's not all so symmetrically laid out, maybe the bady's face in a 3/4 view instead of front would add to it a bit as well.

Very cool, it makes me happy to see someone actually approaching their image construction from an iconographic point of view, instead of simply tyring ot make a "scene". THough i agree with flyingP that there's far to much symetry at the moment. Though maybe the symetry could be retained if another elemtent was shifted, such as angling out the side characters, bringing in secondary diagonals to the composition. Either way, keep it up man, I like alot.

Love your last concept sketch; looks more interesting and tells more of a story than the previous version. Only thing which concerns me are the swords (they resemble Lightsabers too much for my taste), but its up to you.

I like the approch your taking. Its like a movie poster or somthing. I think if combined your last two stetches, it will look even better IMO. Take the emperor and two chicks from your previous sketch and combine it with all the action and explosions from your last sketch.

Looks like you're definitely on track! Can't wait to see this in 3D. Bet there'll be a lot of intriguing character in these faces. With the battle happening in the background. Are you planning to keep it all in blues? If so, I hope that works out. I'm not too sure how passionate that icy blue will look, concidering the romance and battle.
I added a city in flames concept, and some spaceship fighting in the space art to a concept sketch in my thred. Let me know what you think...

I like that ship! Very unique! And please don't be offended by the SW thing, your work is great. I just thought I would mention it because I think you would improve your chances on winning without light sabres, but then again why should such things be limited only to SW anyway?

thanks for the comments...I'll be modeling the ship once I finish the girl (or until I get frustrated and have to move on to something else for a while!).
But, I just had an insight while modeling her head. It is MUCH easier to model in poly mode and then turn it into sub-d (this might only apply to lightwave 3D) When just working in sub-d, I tended to stretch things in ways they shouldn't getting wierd creases...so, I hope this info helps anyone else working in LW.

Here's a start on her head...start meaning that I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to approach it..but I think now that I've got a sense for it, it will go much faster. That is until I get to the ear...hate ears!!

I don't know if it help you coz you are using lightwave and splines? This is a ear I did recently, is box modeling, but maybe you can use it for reference :)

thanks for the ear advice guys...now if I can just get some time to work on it. BUSY BUSY BUSY... a little selfish plug..if anyone has the new X-Box game "X-Men: Legends" - I did the character animation on the girl in the intro...the girl screaming help. And Wolverine when he lands on Blob. If anyone has it, I'd love to hear what you thought of the intro. I gotta say though, it's all worth it...all the work, job hunting, and so forth...when you walk into a store and you can play the demo of the game you worked on. Good luck all!

Your story line is very interesting, it has a sort of spiritual feel to it. Your modeling start looks great so far. Your ship looks like a weapon of old(sword) but is technologicaly advanced . I like it.

I agree its looking good, ears are tricky. My best advice would be to do a flat shape first then extrude and bevel faces inward then outward to achieve that ear shape. Then follow it up by smooting. I use 3D Studio Max 6 so maybe a different approach works better in the software you use.

One small step for the character, one gaint leap for ears! Hi all, so I figured out the ear. I didn't want to use a tutorial so I tried it several different ways, and the way that worked best was to create a bevelled circle in the general shape, and then go one line of points at a time to shape the ear into the right shape. and although it's not done - since it needs to be attached to her head and look alien - tadda! here it is. Thanka again guys for the tips and tuts.

Here's an update on one of the ships, I still haven't decided if these are going to be the emporers ships or the rebels. I still have a considerable amount of work to do on it, but at least the major geometry is set. C&C welcome!

The spaceship design hit me with it's subtle elegance,especially for a fighter,
so it's something different. The light glow gives it a cool ethereal quality. I'm

great model, I like it .. is that big gun orientable in some way? I don't know why, but the position in your last render is in some way unnatural for a gun .. it should be probably more ahed oriented .. I am not sure, baybe is just me .. anyway if it is orientable than this can be regarded just as the rest position .. but apart from this, really great work here, looking forward to see it textured ..

I have a bit of a revision to the storyline.
...A long time ago in a galaxy pretty far away, their was an emperor who had to make a tough decision in order to save the life of an entire race. A nearby (couple of thousand light years away) planet had become endangered by catastrophic events and the entire population had to evacuate or die. So, the emperor decided that he would save these immigrants by allowing them to live on his planet as "helpers" - a.k.a. slaves. As generations went by, the lives of the slaves and the inhabitants - The Aren - crossed more and more until there were major uprisings. The slaves had realized that they were not in such a great situation and were beginning to fight the establishment. At the same time, the Aren's technology had become so advanced that they didn't need the slaves anymore, since they had robots to do their bidding. So, when the emperors daughter, Atara, falls in love with Kei - the greatest of all the rebel/slave warriors - and run away with him into the slave village, the emperor finds an excuse to attack the slaves in search of her. Of course, the emperor does this knowing that Kei would be drawn out by the fighting and could be killed. In my new compositional sketch - which should be arriving shortly - we will see the climactic moment when Kei and Atara are surrounded by the emperor’s army, while the slave city burns in the background and the emperor watches from above.

Great job so far...on that ship and the whole story...keep up the great work...maybe tone down the bloom on the renders a bit...just my opinion though it seems to wash away the detail a bit. Waiting to see more !:thumbsup:

Essecendesign - sorry about the bloom, it's just so much fun when it's just the raw model!! ;)
I've also added a bit more to my storyline. I think it's going to be an evolving epic;
But basically, here's what going on now.
The Emporer is in control not only of the planet Aren on which his empire is centered, but all of the planets in his solar system. So, when the Emporers technology became advanced enough to where he didn't need the slaves anymore, he began shipping them to other planets to work in mines and so forth. Eventually, on one of the planets where the majority of the slaves were shipped, they created a community and decided that they would claim this planet as theirs. Of course, this was unthinkable to the emporer. So when his dauther flies off to that planet with the rebel warrior Kei, he sends a full on assult onto the planet to put the slaves back into their place and to reclaim the planet and his dauther. But alas, this is going to be a much harder challenge then the Emporer expected!
Sketches to come shortly. Think burning industrial pipe-like cities with ships attacking and families fleaing, an army of robots surrounding the warrior Kei, his side-kick, and the princess, the emporer overlooking the entire scene and his planet in the background!

Your story line is evolving nicely. I really like your ships design, and it looks almost living but yet resembles a weapon as well . Very unique indeed. What is the scale of this ship , don't quite see it yet. It feels like it should be really big but I dont know for sure.

Personally i would suggest to experiment again even at the end of this challenge with this bloom effect u are doing in your renders..it kinda gives a magical look to it..If u can control it in your final scene i think it will be great..but i think we have time until then.

Hey man. Nice layout. Very old school. :thumbsup: Looks good so far, but I think the background sky could stand to use some dirtying up, like overlaying a texture over it to break up the perfection and cleanliness of the gradient. Unless you're doing this intentionally, then I'll shut up.

Hiespike, is the intro to the X-men Virtuoso is talking about
the wormhole type tunnel? If so I would like to say it was
a great job. I actually did one in 1972 with a rear projection
screen and sheets of clear plastic with black parallel lines
printed on them, the sheets of plastic were each bent and a
blinking light placed behind it. Several of these were placed in
a box with the rear projection screen in front. Tunnels were
randomly projected and the effect was similar to the X- men
intro, but done without computers, just mechanically. People
really liked it. One guy changed his furniture into sci-fi! Wondering
how you did your effect on computers.
Anyway, back to the future, the lady is turning out nice, I'm
sure you'll refine the curves on her legs later.

first of all, i'd like to state: perfectly love your work, all of it ^^ i've got a couple of critics though... her hands are to small, to straight... hands are a bit bulged... look at your own and compare... and then theres the head... it's to egg-formed, and the neck is a little to thin... anyways i think you're gonna pull this off nice! good luck :)

Like the redesigns a lot; as for the modeling it's very good, but a few areas need to be fixed, I think. I don't know if the hands are too small, but they are a tad too thin (if you look from the side view). Two things that are bother me are the crotch/groin region and the positioning of the arms and legs.
The way the groin is currently modeled is a bit "unrealistic" in terms of how the groin connects the legs; granted, you'll be covering that area with clothing, but it still might cause some problems with posing the character.
Second issue is the way you have modeled the position of the arms and legs; I'm assuming you'll be using bones to pose the characters, yes? The way that the arms are now, the shoulders will not deform correctly and look very wrong (I've done the same thing before when I first started in 3D); the legs I'm less concerned about, although I think they could be spaced out a bit more.
Other then those issues, your entry is looking great. :)

DANG, that's some wicked modelling. At first I felt the female model at the start was a little out of proportion, big arms and all, but now it looks great! Nice dynamic poses as well.

thanks guys, hope to have more shortly. The rigging is something I came up with by trail an error. Basically, the logic behind it is to use the bones not only as bones but also as muscles. In that way if a part of the body is not supposed to bend, I use bones to constrain it from bending. In theory, I'm assuming that you can build an entire shell for the body, making it as rigid as you wanted it...but that might be too much.

Model is looking really nice, HieSpike; the blouse might be a little "tight", but it depends on the type of material it's supposed to be. Your way of rigging characters is very similar to my own (mainly cause I never got used to using weight maps, cause they're such a pain in the @$$.... :rolleyes: ).

Awesome work on your character and ship. I think it's great that you jumped right in to rigging and posing at this stage. Impressive.
There were a couple comments about the hands, one of them said they were too thin. They look thin because of the area where the thumb attaches. Relax your hand and look at how the whole side where the thumb attaches hangs down and makes the hand look thick. It takes some effort to flatten your hand out to where your thumb is on the same plane as the palm.
I'm not sure but I think the nipples could be slightly off to the sides of the breasts. I don't think nipples point straight forward like that. They look good to me, regardless.

At this time I'm really stuck on the outfit. I'm not exactly sure where I'm going with it. But I figure I should just try something and if I don't like it, do something else. And I've also figured out what I want to do with her hair. In this universe, these characters don't have hair but feathers! what do you think?

Great character design i must say. there is something i am not sure; when is her neck ends and her cloth begins. Because i feel that she is inside a plastic cloth from head to toe. Well is just a though.

Nice work so far, I especially like the way her clothes are stretched between her breasts - but then i'm like that :)
At a glance it looks like her torso and thighs are a bit long.
Something doesn't quite feel right about her face. I wonder if her face isn't a bit flat and her neck a bit slim and long. Also her mouth seems a bit small...
I am making myself laugh whilst writing this as I recieved simliar comments about a female head I've modelled for my GSO. I kept thinking - what do you guys want the perfect female head? which wasn't what I was initially intending to do. I personally find there's a very fine line between intentional imperfection and incorrect gemoetry, particularly when modelling a young female, but it definately looks like you're headed in the right direction.

I was going to mention exactly what VisualAct said,
and I would add the backs of her knees need sexy hollows
below which the slow curves of her lower legs begin. I like her breasts
though. Move her thighbone up and shape her hips out more.
Her ankle needs to be straightened. Then we can get nice and
subjective about the lenght of her legs. Hey I have yet to design
my perfect lady! No easy task. You're way ahead of me! And
probably this is stuff you'd get to anyway, but it's cool to
emphasize attention to it!

See looks ok ,anatomically, now. She has a greeaaat b@t! :eek:
You fixed the back of the foot and I think you should give some more love on the front of the foot and the fingers (can't quite tell if you have already gave your love to the fingers due to the poses)
Regarding to the submissions thread, I had the same problem yesterday but I just pressed submit and waited for a looooong time for my submission to be accepted...but finally made it. If it's a general problem maybe some moderator can look over it.

Some more progress. Things I feel need fixing are - thigh, neck, face, shoulders, hands. And then I can put more detail on her clothes and texture her and stuff and I'll be done - with her! Then the male characters :) :(
Enjoy! Pose needs a bit more work to, but I'm still working on getting the rig to give me it's most before I do the final pose. As of now she has 435 bones in her!

Really nice work man, it seems that u are trying to make it be a tight Rig so that u will be free to pose her as u like anytime.... :thumbsup:
The issue between the thighs where in unfolds a bit wierd (inside of the thighs..) maybe u could work the way Stahlberg does in his models ...he gives i think some morph targets for that kind of movements in the legs...in this way he is always sure that the model will fold correctly in the difficult areas......hope i help...Cool stuff here :thumbsup:

Your model is looking great, the last pose you have here is looking quite natural and everything looks nice and balanced . The only thing I notice , is the neck seems to be a little too slender, I would make the neck a little thicker( only slightly).
Also the top of the boots look a little too loose, are the boots going to have a zipper or something. Just a couple of thoughts.
Wow , 435 bones in one character. I am just learning how to model characters , you give me something to shoot for.

Like other said, the texture is really great! There may be a little something with the proportions though. I think it may be the size of the head and the neck. From my point of view, I think they chould be a little bit bigger...

Great textures and fur (what did you use for the fur?). The modeling is really well done, but from some angles, it looks like she has no forhead (however, that could just be the angle of the render).
You'd think with all that fur, she'd at least put on a pair of pants! :D

Nice work in here, I´m amazed with your rigging skills, just not very good at that myself....actually never rigged a charater, as I have never made an animation. But need to work on that, really much power it gives in possing the character.
Didn´t she have bigger eyes in some of the earlier submissions. I don´t think she´s as beutifull as she was....Maybe, its just the facial expression, I don´t know.
Anyways, keep it coming, like it!
