10 October 2004, 12:09 PM
Hey Wiro, Grant here. Sorry I missed you at last week's party. Glad you're in the challenge. Really looking forward to seeing what you produce mate!

Hope to catch up soon.

10 October 2004, 04:30 PM (

I'm just playing with ideas, not quite sure yet about the setting. I definately want to stay planetbound but I'll be exploring a desert and maybe rock setting too. Depends on the colourscheme and composition. Landscape or portrait? Will try and squeeze in more doodles tomorrow.

10 October 2004, 04:35 PM
Posts, and I've not even started!
Thanks all, you do realise that you're pressuring me into finishing this :D

gjpetch: glad you say you're taking a backseat on this, hehe.
Duddlebug: good to see you're entering. How'd the Milo project go?
Unitstudio: dude, where were you!? And where's your entry? This should be right up your alley.

I was out watching Collateral so my entry is a bit late. Sketched the above pics at work (ahem) and a little at home...about 30-45 mins each. I'm not that fast on the Wacom

They feel a little kitchy maybe. I really don't have any specifics in my head yet, just trying out different things.

10 October 2004, 04:36 PM
Just toying with ideas? It seems like you've got a tyobox brimming with ideas. :) These are very sweet indeed. The palette and compositions read so well already. I'm interested in hearing more about the background to these images.

10 October 2004, 04:38 PM
It's there man, in the 2D section. I'll stick to 2D - I simply don't have a hope in hell of competing with you in the 3D section :D

10 October 2004, 04:47 PM
hi Wiro,
I like this sketch give it more details it'll be really cool one, you know... how about you make the planet looks more different, i mean colors water that looks like milk or something else not water.

10 October 2004, 10:58 AM
even if not seeing you @ cgtalk for a while ... i must still say: ....

10 October 2004, 04:22 PM (

Akh, this isn't going where I want it to. It still lacks a sense of grand scale but at least I think I've settled on a coulourscheme.

I'm putting in a large shipwreck in the right corner from which more smaller ships are fleeing, doomed to settle on this barren planet on which their modership crashlanded.

10 October 2004, 04:29 PM
Wiro, the design and the palette are strong. As to the epic scale of it perhaps you can introduce human figures into the image, which is always a quick and dirty way to demonstrate scale - possibly on the ground beneath the vessel. I think seeing more of the vessel itself, giving it more vertical scale would help establish scale and an epic quality...Another suggestion would be something in the foreground...

Otherwise however, its damn fine!

10 October 2004, 04:30 PM
Great coloursheme. I definitely think that a very big object in the background (your mothership) will give the sense of scale you want. Maybe some scale reference objects in the foreground too (humans visible in the foreground ship?).
Keep going!

edit : unitstudio was quicker and explained better :D

10 October 2004, 04:32 PM
Thanks for popping into this thread's good to be back with some personal work again. I've not really finished anything in...err...2 years already?
Too much work started to drain my energy from doing stuff at home too. Gotta get my gears oiled again!

10 October 2004, 04:35 PM
I'm going to like this one.
Great job Wiro. I bet your models will be georgeous.

10 October 2004, 05:21 PM
Great design and colors, looking forward to see more.

10 October 2004, 06:14 PM
Wiro, the ship in the foreground with the claw like structure, is that the good guy or bad guy? I mean is that ship going over to the shipwreck on the right to fix it or destroy it? It looks a lot like a repair vessel, It looks really slow-moving too, unless that's your intention, or else you could perhaps tilt the vessel and make it lunge forward a bit.

It'll be interesting to see some subtle cool colours in as well. One of the reasons why this might not be looking as grand as you wanted it to be, would be because of the size of the vessel, currently there is nothing to associate it with, it looks small unlike the 1st concept you posted which had the ocean to relate size to.

I like the barren wasteland look, it'll be interesting to see unusual rock formations in the distance, especially with so much wide space to play with.

10 October 2004, 06:24 PM
Great concepts, looks promising!.. the last one especially has very nice mood in it.. almost started to look for Roger Wilco :) The crashlanded mothership will surely add some epic scope in it. Keep it up!

10 October 2004, 06:31 PM
Very cool concept art. Sorta like Chiang's work.

10 October 2004, 06:33 PM
It does look promising and I think the idea has room for a very grand composition.
Keeping one eye fixed on this thread.

10 October 2004, 06:42 PM
I really love that one... The space ship is really really nice !

10 October 2004, 07:03 PM
Very nice ship design.

10 October 2004, 07:21 PM
Color scheme is the cats meow for a Space opera.................The ship concept has some fine angles and a indepth look to it's design.I look forward to the details once it makes it into the 3DWorld................I like the idea of a Shipwreck off to one side very much.............It's always a good idea to have the viewers eyes wonder left to right and then back again, always taking in more eye candy................

For me I think all is under order here.Perhaps I would think of going more Vertical with this.Look into that 4 to 3 aspect ratio. You can showcase the sky more, stretch out your terrain formations to the sky.In either case,a grand Space opera in the making is coming here, that's a sure bet.Go at it hard Wiro....................:arteest:

10 October 2004, 07:51 PM
nice landscape so far, keep it up!

10 October 2004, 08:19 PM
Wow wow wow Really nice art!

I wonder why you don't entry in the 2D competition. You've got strong skills in drawing.
About your last picture, would you set a big moon or the curve a planet to add some more "space opera feel" (just a suggestion ;-)

Can't wait to see the 3D final.

10 October 2004, 08:26 PM
Wow, that sketches reminds me of the "human-collectors" seen in the animatrix; looking forward for the cg-versions of your ideas...

10 October 2004, 08:41 PM
Hey wiro. :)

Like the colour scheme also on that last one. I do still prefer that ship design from your first pics though. Also as another poster has suggested a planet in the background would be nice, and would help to balance the composition. Maybe those ships could be looking for survivors of the wreck, or escape pods flying out of it.

Just some thoughts.

Looking forward to this one, its nice to see you back doing personal work again.

- John.

10 October 2004, 10:12 PM
You have been an inspiration to me for awhile, Mr. Wiro, I'm honored to be competing with you.

10 October 2004, 10:16 PM
I think you've made the right choice going with a horizontal composition. I think with what you're trying to show, vertical would be a little tight. Right now it's got that nice cenimatic feel.

10 October 2004, 10:46 PM
I like the landscape frame composition( i 've always liked them more...don't know why).
The ship man is scary ...i am curious where this will lead. .... :deal: :wip:

10 October 2004, 12:37 AM
unitstudio, m@, hom:
Yea, I really do need to put something in there for scale. Humans on the ground is one idea allthough they would only be specks at this distance. Maybe some vehicles kicking up dust under the ship. I was also thinking of putting in some smaller escort ships next to the big one (and also scale the big one up, lower to the ground).
Still not quite sure on the design of the crashed ship. I'd like it to be spherical but am afraid it'll look too much like the battle scene in SW Episode II

Hey Hom, are you back from Bali? Lucky b@stard!
It's funny seeing your avatar as I got that head on top of my monitor at work :D

There are no good or bad guys, only a bunch of unlucky travellers stranded on this planet. I intend it to be a sort of industrial vessel, maybe a terraformer or mobile base. Large in scale but still dwarfed by the mothership, so it will be relatively slowmoving.

As for the colours, I aggree. I was thinking of tinting all shadows more into blue or purple. As for the scale, I was actually thinking that the ocean would be problematic. I thought that cliffs and rocks would be better for scale but we'll see

Virtuoso, Steen, DimitriLiatsos:
Yes, composition is really important to me. I'm still working on things to lead the eye about.
I was toying with a portrait format too but I think that for this particular composition a landscape format works the best.

Hah! I think I'll leave the 2D stuff to the pros ;)
This is really the limit of my 2D painting skills...I'm not good when it comes to painting fine details and proper shading. Not to mention that I'm sloooowww! That sketch took me several hours this time. Mostly due to scrapped ship designs and other dead ends.

To the rest of you: thanks for your support!!

10 October 2004, 12:43 AM
beautifull illustrations man, sure your not doing the 2D one? It's going to be a pleasure to see your tutorial if you win.

good luck!

10 October 2004, 08:40 PM
Real great sketches. I like then all.
I`m sure the end product is gonna look totally awesome!!!
I'll be looking forward to your work Wiro.
Good luck!!

10 October 2004, 01:34 PM
Nice concept, Will hanging out to see more

10 October 2004, 07:53 PM
Would it make sense to add some small jets or helicopter size ships flying beside or in front of this craft to demonstrate its scale?

10 October 2004, 12:28 AM
Wiro and Pascal!!!...
I stand in awe.

Have you considered using atmosheperic elements to add scale?? Like clouds or a dust strom or perhaps even a kind of tornado ( the possible cause to the mothership to crash???)

Also supposing that a "mothership" has crashed, one could assume that this massive object simply didnt go plob into the ground and perhaps skidded for a great distance before coming to a complete stop? Maybe by including the vast wake of destruction of the motherships crash more scale can be added.

Besides long streaks of burn marks from a crash never fail to give a sense of desolation to a dessert landscape.

You have always been an inspiration, and just competing with you is an honor.
Good luck.

10 October 2004, 12:19 AM
Heya Wiro!

Dan here. Wicked concept sketches man. It looks like you do it with such easy. It motivates me to improve. I actually really like the top left of the first images you posted. It's got a calm, quiet eeriness about it that i really like. But which ever one you go with, it's no doubt gonna be very cool.

good luck man.

10 October 2004, 12:40 PM
Greetings mr Wiro!

I'm nowhere near your level, but I hope to make some useful suggestions.
Looking at your latest sketch, I get the impression that you're trying to convey a sense of moodiness and melancholy. As mentioned by the others, the sense of scale is still not there, but can be easily rectified by elements relative to your ship. But at this point I really like the feel of your sketch. Some cool colours might further enhance this quality. I would really love to see this quality brought out!

Hope to have helped!

10 October 2004, 01:31 PM
nice sketches

cant wait to see the 3d version..........

10 October 2004, 06:32 AM
Just rememberd how the heck i found CGtalk and how much time i was watching all of u guys before i subscribe in.....Yes i think also that u have to find some basic time and participate. :)
Yep, me too. It's amazing to see how much cgtalk has grown. I still remember how cgtalk used to look like.

Anyhow, wiro, we're still waiting for your update :D

10 October 2004, 06:38 AM
simoncvy, WazaR and keetmun;
All your suggestions are good ones. I definately will add some smaller ships; escorts, small transports, etc and atmospherics; dustclouds from the ships, suggestions of dust kicked up through wind, etc to the endpiece.
I'm not so sure about the crashwake though since that would implify great speed. I was imagining the ship to be so big that it's relative speed was low. It would look more like the Hindenburg crash, floating to the ground and crunching it's shape into the sand.

Yo man! Good to see you entering too. Several people have liked the ocean pics but I'm thinking that sand broken with rocks and cliffs would look more interesting than flat ocean allthough I too like the colours of the first sketches.

Well, I've been working late nights almost all week so no time for updates yet. It's weekend now so I'll get back to it soon after getting my hair cut ;)

Welcome on board!
waiting to see your concepts.

10 October 2004, 08:34 AM
I agree with what you just wrote above, the ocean ones look better to me because of the colouring. -I dont know why, I have nothing against warm colours usually:) But an actual ocean is a little dull in terms of cool rock formations and crashed starships.

So maybe if you consulted your drawing board you could come up with something different: like an ocean inside an icy desert (lake maybe). And there could be caves, glaciers, frozen stuff etc. all with blue and white.

But there really isn't anything wrong whith the desert idea though, I like it. And I like your starship alot, very original.

When i last battled wiro, it was using a technique called 'the art of modelling without modelling'

... and we both know who won that battle!

11 November 2004, 01:12 AM

12 December 2004, 12:52 AM
Due to an excess of work in the past 2 months (12-16h days almost every day) I've not been able to work much on my entry. I'll be off on vacation for a month over xmas but since I won't have my PC with me I don't think I'll be able to finish this challenge on time. I'll continue work on it though, maybe I'll get it done in time for Expose3.
Thanks for checking in!

12 December 2004, 10:43 AM
Get some rest man...i am sure that we will see your entry finished soon in any case  ..and will look ..we all know how...damn cool...Merry Xmass
