ok no more tweeking! :)

10 October 2004, 06:22 PM
I'd like to say Hi to everyone who is taking part in this cool challenge. I actually think this one is llong overdue! Anyways like I mentioned in the original thread announcing the challenge: I hope I get time to finish this one. I'll do everything in my power to. Good luck to again and talk soon! :)

10 October 2004, 07:39 PM
Good luck...hope u can finish it!:)

10 October 2004, 05:43 AM (

I don't know. cosy placess allways appealed to me. Not sure if this would qualify as a space opera though. anyone think so?

10 October 2004, 06:00 AM
hey crazybread :) that sketch might look really cool if you frame it vertically, and some really strong perspective from worm's eye view.

10 October 2004, 06:21 AM
I like the subject matter and agree that perspective could play a big part in making this work.

10 October 2004, 02:50 PM
Your concept is good. Just try to think of how it would be represented in an epic theme and you are on your way. It looks really good to me.

Good luck..

10 October 2004, 02:58 PM
Perhaps you could pull the perspective back a little to show a big cliff overlooking the gas bar. On the edge of the cliff stands a huge army, all waving empty travel mugs and suffering from caffeine withdrawal :scream:

Love the style, though, very cool.

10 October 2004, 03:03 PM
Hi crazybread ! saw your machineflesh pic , magnificient stuff ,
I really hope you get to finish this one !

Good Luck n Have Fun , dude !

10 October 2004, 04:01 PM
Beautiful concept, very clean.

Good luck to you

10 October 2004, 04:06 PM
nice clean sketch wanna see more details, can't wait:thumbsup:

good luck

10 October 2004, 05:28 PM
Great to see You again. Somehow SF fits You perfectly and most certainly I'll watch this topic.

As to the sketch- do not take me wrong, it's great as it is (if anybody would tell me it is concept made for StarWars I'd believe easily) but IMHO it is just somehow not "monumental" enough.

10 October 2004, 05:31 PM
cool sketch..wanna see more from you :bounce: :bounce:

10 October 2004, 05:51 PM
This is a real nice concept drawing... the atmosphere and colours are real nice.

i think it probably does need a little more grandeur and scale to qualify for 'space opera' though... though i'm still a little mystified by the whole 'grand space opera' theme!!

good luck developing this!!

10 October 2004, 05:54 PM
i remembered your alienware valley man i know you are going to do stuning thing here, nice start, keep up.:buttrock:

10 October 2004, 06:34 PM
Looks fine to me. I think it will be good as long as it's describing something iconic.

10 October 2004, 07:47 AM
That's a beautiful painting - I think it's actually my favourite so far - but I don't think it hits the Space Opera chord. It's quite serene, where Space Opera needs to be big and grand and maybe a bit stupid. (Though it *doesn't* need to involve a space battle - I've seen enough to last me a lifetime over the last week!)

Maybe if you pushed what you have into the lower left corner of a larger canvas, and left a lot of the rest of the space empty except for the contrails of a few descending ships? That would give you more of a sense of scale.

Whatever - let's see some more!

10 October 2004, 07:54 AM
Cool concept and the drawing is really nice...

10 October 2004, 04:49 AM
Hi All!

Panupat: Thanx for the idea. As it stands now I will actually think about it some more untill I'm comfortable with the setting. You know I'm not excluding the idea of a vertical setup. Who knows how It will be framed at the end.

riki: Hmm. I will for sure play with the perspective once I start to actualy lay things out in 3d. I can already think of a few docking bays in perspective. I mean the sketch just lays things out for me to ponder over. At some point I will have to make a decission to either look through the camera from the bottom or however and frame this piece.

Krulwick: Thanx, I will. I know I have to get more hapening in there, so it hopefully will come.

timothyD: You know TimothyD you just might be on to something with that cliff.... Hmm

Squibbit: Thanx. I hope so too!

pddaugusto, splotch: Thanx guys!

_RK_: Thanx. I almost frieked when I saw this one posted and said "Tailor made for crazybread" ...not really, but I really like space gear and Sci-Fi stuff. :bounce: Anyways this Starwars business shows that much ehh? Crap, I know that everybody is influenced here by something, and I'm not gonna argue that starwars is something I don't love, and if it shows that much.... then Ohh well People just have to bite it. You know what?, I'll try to make the next sketch less starwars looking :).

-Andy-: Thanx. Hopefully you'll see more. :)

duddlebug: Thank you Sir. Yeah a lot of people are saying that to me. I begginning to see the importance of grandeur for this project. I kind a like my concept and want to develope it further, so I'll be adding things, changing it arround. Maybe a city in the background of the cliff. We'll see. Whatever it is I hope I can convey a feeling of big.

Designer2: Thank you Designer2.

oshiroii: Thanx. Thats the plan!

Teapot-7: I'm thinking of putting a lot of things into this mountain, details on top of details, with bays, spaceships dicking etc. basically some sort of a gathering maybe a secret gathering of some major economic players of this world or something about to decide some grand scheme for ....... stufff. I dunno. I'm not really into weapons and killing and battles and things. I guess I'm just sick of it. Besides, I totally don't think that a space opera has to have a battle or it doesn't fit. I hope to achieve a grand scale with it though. thanx again for your suggestions. :)

gpepper: Thanx! :)

10 October 2004, 05:06 AM (

MMMmm... What to say, a lot of people are concerned with the size of things generrally. "Gotta be bigger man!" seems to come from all over this board. Ok I say, so here is the same idea (I know missing a lot of things yet) but a little bit more bigger. not sure if I'll go with the hole in the ground thing. Too starwars, I guess. Perhaps a city or town in the back, and next time instead of ther mining shaft, a station of somekind. Thats it for now! :)

10 October 2004, 06:05 AM
Yep, just what I was expecting from you. ;) Nice work, this ones going to look really cool.

10 October 2004, 06:26 AM
oh yeah...thats nicer man!...maybe u can grow also to the top with more bouildings or some and make higher your image aspect...vertical shape...just an idea...but this is getting nicer...keep :arteest:

10 October 2004, 06:12 PM
Looks pretty good.

But if you think the hole in the ground is too Star Wars...I wouldnt worry much about that. The whole picture is screaming Star Wars to me. The buildings look like a lot of the buildings you would find at SciFi 3D. The ship kind of reminds me of the medical frigate. There are 2 suns like on Tatooine. And the landscape makes me think of Tatooine. There is no doubt in my mind where your inspiration has come from ;). Dont think there is anything wrong with that. My ship kind of reminds me of the Suluca from Aliens.

I like what you have going so far. Keep it up!

10 October 2004, 02:54 AM (

I'm starting to test some textures of the mountain, and here is something I rendered that I'm happy with. I now have to translate that little test render and all its parameters into a full size mountain piece. This afcourse will mean my textures will have to be huge. (yes, I am a texture freek :) The whole mountain texture I suspect will be arround 8k high x 5k wide.

10 October 2004, 02:57 AM
ngrava, rattlesnake, TheRealFlyBoy: thank you for your comments guys! :buttrock:

10 October 2004, 03:27 AM
8k/5k mountain texture...insaane ,but rememering you Machine Flesh entry
you were pretty much into details :)

btw, u ever finished that pic ?

10 October 2004, 05:32 AM
Hey Squibbit, I feel I need this size of texture to correctly show a nice quality of mountain in a portrait layout, hopefully 5Kx3K. Plus, the stuff that is resized by the computer allways looks nicer (sharper) We'll see if my computer gives me crap and if it does then I'll start to size-down those pixels. I hope to use it large and if I have to I will start to put the image with seperately rendered elements (I know thats allowed). yeah, There is nothing more I love then details. I know that thats one of the reasons that I overestimated my time on the machineflesh, so I had no time to finish + some professional work landed my way and I had to drop out. See with me its this: either I give the piece the details it demands and deserves, or bye bye, I trash the project. If you noticed my machineflesh piece had a nicely finished sketch. I will not be doing a sketch like that for the Space opera. Instead I will put my energy into the final and see where that takes me. Shit, sorry for writing so much, I"m tired and I know I'm rambling. I'll go to sleep now.

10 October 2004, 05:57 AM
wow man, awesome textures... i really really freak out when i finish the modelling and have to start with the UV mapping and texturing...

8kx5k? damn.. i need more ram :P

about the size of the things, maybe it seems not to be big enought cause theres no objet compare with... but i think its ok, in the sketch seems to be "small" cause its plain, without docks or gates or any details , but if u r gonna fill it up with all the details u said, then they will define the size of the mountain, or i think so.

ps: is there a story behind this? write some! :D

11 November 2004, 05:34 AM (

Got little more done with the cliff. I'm finally getting it towards where I'm satisfied with the look of the rock surface, all dirty and different and hopefully not repeating. Its not as large as I'd like it to be but I may still change that. Th rock texture is now 3k by 5k and is displaying little rocks and spike dtails. I'll still put grass and tree shrubs as I go along and finalize it. As you can see I put a little scout ship against the rock (Just wanted to get a feel for a spaceship against the cliff. Its way too big right now but I'll shrink that when I start building the castle and all the docking bays. and yes I have lots of spaceships from freight to cruisers. :)

11 November 2004, 02:10 PM
ouch. haven't seen your thread before, and hell I'm glad i came across it. This is great work man. I feel the most crucial aspect of this image is to emphasize the size ration of the cliff to the rest of the bg... the buildings on top of the cliff could look really small .

I am also curious to see what is the relationship between the underground base? and the cliff. Really interesting piece.

11 November 2004, 03:08 PM
hey don't say sorry for long text , it was fun to read.
I couldn't see the texture repeating and all those details,
rocks , spikes , grass and three shrubs , I like them too,
su much fun adding all kinds of little details to a pic :)

11 November 2004, 05:13 PM
Nice textures! I think it will really start to look big once you add all the smaller things to it. Great job.

11 November 2004, 06:58 AM (

This is hopefully the last post of the rock by itself as I'm starting to lay out the castle geometry (as reference now) leaving the details for later. The top you see here is actually about 60% of the original and I think the size will be enough for the final. I'm starting to get memory problems (I aaaaaalways have them, especially with large maps, damn thing will just crash when rendering) soooo, I'll be putting stuf together from rendered elements.

11 November 2004, 03:32 PM
awesome textures - do you paint them by hand or are you using photographs as a base?

anyway great stuff love it

11 November 2004, 05:12 PM
really cool texture !

11 November 2004, 08:53 PM
Hi Marcin. that rock looks really great. Looking forward to seeing further stges. Good luck. Claireabella

01 January 2005, 05:31 PM
looking great, the rock is looking awesome....good luck

01 January 2005, 10:08 AM (

Wow. I'm gone for most of this challenge and soo much good work is gone on. just a quick wire frame from the modelling session.

01 January 2005, 10:12 AM (

Ok. I know I got to work fast. Been super busy so I haven't spent enough time on the challenge. I'm also cutting on my scene. I'll try only to concentrate on the tower and cliff, some spaceships.

01 January 2005, 10:35 AM
hurry up, this looks really promising.

01 January 2005, 12:18 PM
WoW, the tower is a really great work, the misc between the middle age achitecture and some futuristics composents is really great, the texturing is more realistic, very good work i wait after your final image

01 January 2005, 01:19 PM
Whoa man! That tower is brutal. Good luck and hurry up!

01 January 2005, 02:58 PM

01 January 2005, 03:04 PM
this couldvery well be top 3 and blow the other looooooooooooooooong threads out of the water in just less than 50 replies,:surprised:applause::applause::applause::applause:

01 January 2005, 06:31 AM (

Wel, its dressup time from here on untill the end. I duno what else to say. Hmmm I'll still have to add another spaceship or two. I have some built already I just have to finish them up. I'm thinking of adding a dark clowd to the highest quarters of the tower. ...and that ship taking off from one of the docking bays. Don't have much of a story behind it so who ever looks at it can imagine their own. Someone is trying to sobotage this gass station/repair shop/command post. :)

01 January 2005, 06:34 AM
....Thank you guys for all the support and your cool sudgestions. I guess there is no time to chat, but I want you to know I soo appreciate your kind comments! :)

01 January 2005, 06:52 AM
hey u got motion blur or something on that flyin thing ? should take it off in my
opinion, looks very wierd

the tower , while magnificient, truly, on the right ends up in midair , as does
the cliff a bit lower, but u probably knew this

remember to post closeups on the tower later pls

01 January 2005, 08:47 PM (

Well, here is what it will look like somewhat. Stil adding bits and pieces here and there. Some smoke from the tower (I think I mentioned that before). anyways, this is a tight one.

01 January 2005, 10:54 PM (

Well, here is also mine. What Can I say, It was a close call. LLLLots of really amazing work here. Good luck to everyone. PEACE!

01 January 2005, 10:56 PM
nailed it ....and below 50 replies ..:argh:
wow, just awesome concept and everything is perfect.its a great pic:argh::argh::argh::applause::applause::deal:
good luck

01 January 2005, 11:16 PM
go ...TO boys...its too real to let it slip...surely in my list of top 3 here:scream::bounce:

01 January 2005, 11:51 PM
Thank you jdsb. you wouldn't know why I can't upload my final Tiff?. I'm using LeechFTP, and it seems to be downloading untill it finishes and then this:

01 January 2005, 12:08 AM
oh man,i am not really sure , the server is acting weird today ,looks like a connection based timeout error, did u try again? otherwise pm the moderators, all the best man,i hope you figure out this problem...

01 January 2005, 12:32 AM
I'm not sure, but I won't be surprised if I'm out. It would not allow me to connect to cgnetwork server. Well if I'm really out then Good luck to everyone else. its been another cool experience.

01 January 2005, 12:34 AM
oh man,try pming the mods ....,anybody else around for any help

01 January 2005, 12:35 AM
try again and again man...

01 January 2005, 01:22 AM
the deadline is postponed i think man...all the best

01 January 2005, 02:15 AM

Thanx mate, you rock. I'll keep on trying!

01 January 2005, 02:26 AM
CRAPOLLA! When I check the status of my submitted milestones and images. The only one left that I need to upload (so it sais) is the final Tif. When I go and try n do it through Cuteftp it sais that there is already a file there by that name. I know that that sais to me that the file is there, but Its not registered and showing that through cgtalk. ???

...wierd, does anybodyelse have this problem?

01 January 2005, 02:34 AM
i think its because you had a server connection timeout error before in the mddle of uploading ,there must be an incomplete/corrupt file uploaded on the server.Nevermind,i think you can upload as many fiinal images as you want.the last one counts,i think so...not sure since i didnt participate in this challenge.
good luck

01 January 2005, 06:06 AM
All well now. thanx again Jdsb!

01 January 2005, 06:35 AM
Very good render Marcin! I wish u luck

01 January 2005, 06:58 PM (

I got a chance to change the rock, and it worked out for the better (I think). I was scared that my comp wasn't gonna handle the render as I was using a big texture map with displacement. I'm glad it worked. I'm leaving it the way it is here.

01 January 2005, 07:02 PM
Oh thank you Climax!

01 January 2005, 07:33 PM
Looks really nice.
The lighting is very well done.
best of luck

01 January 2005, 07:38 PM
great to hear its uploaded, all the best...:bounce:

01 January 2005, 07:41 PM
I love the textures and displacements (it borders on photorealistic), but... I kinda don't understand how this entry relates to Grand Space Opera. I mean, I understand the concept behind it, but the final image doesn't display the storytelling that your original concepts had.

Not trying to put you down at all, cause I really like the final renders: I just don't see the concept behind the final image.

well to me i looks like the concept "sabotage" co-relates to something grand and science fictional exactly the way the image depicts it.The proportions and scale of the image fit the idea of this challenge perfectly, the lighting/modeling/texturing/atmospherics,concept everything is nailed. It looks immaculate and the concept is perfect once again. It doesnt even take a thought or any brains to understand what the artist is trying to convey in this piece.its perfect ...and professional...and so are the judges...good luck

01 January 2005, 02:48 AM (

ok no more tweeking! :)

01 January 2005, 03:26 AM
oh yeah, theres the other planetary addition .....:buttrock::applause::applause::applause::applause:

01 January 2005, 05:50 AM
I like composition
great........... idea

01 January 2005, 09:45 AM
The rock is cool, but I would add some fog to gain the feeling of perspective.

01 January 2005, 10:35 PM
thanx guys!

you know what Alladin? .. I got some fog in just at the bottom of the rock to signify height like you sudgested. (not too much thoufg) Looks better. Thanx :)

Ok, look:
Just because I personally don't see how his entry best expresses his concept doesn't mean I don't "have any brains" or gives you any other reason to put me down; people have different opinions and thought processses, so don't give me that. :curious:
I understand (and like...) the concept and theme he choose, as well as his initial sketches. I just don't think the final entry gives a clear idea on what is taking place (this is my own opinion and I'm not asking anybody to share it)

crazybread: I wish you the best and good luck with the judging: you've done a very good job on this piece. (my little rant above has nothing to do with you ;) )

EDIT: Ok, maybe I jumped the gun a little. (eh, I don't know...)

01 January 2005, 11:20 PM
chill out mate, dont be suspicious ...i am not giving you any garbage, infact ,i am also stating my opinion in a way.You took offence for no reason.btw, good luck with your entry.

01 January 2005, 04:52 AM
aw-aw-awesome textures, dude!

PD: i found a skull in the rock :P

01 January 2005, 07:09 AM
This image looks so real, great lighting....great work :)

01 January 2005, 07:09 PM
rashaverak, element5: Thanks guys.

The textures are all somewhat high rez, arround 3-4 k for the rock. I had fun rendering it. I had to do it in 3 layers due to memory problems. I just wouldn't render whole at 4k so I had to render out 3 parts, top mid and low seperately.

01 January 2005, 07:11 PM
ps. rashaverak: I dunno about a skull but if you look closely in the higher rez version I put myself on the rock somewhere. :)

02 February 2005, 03:49 PM
i liked much of this image ... maybe two black clothed characters
on that roof there, stepping into an escape vessel, wouldve given the
pic a bit more excitement. Also , some trees down in the foreground or
some mountains in the back ground might have been good ...
the rock and tower are just so cool
