Jason Butler has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Lighting: composition & lighting (

trying to get my final scene and lighting scheme together.

i think my lighting approach will be very much along the same lines as a lot of my test renders. high-contrast, low-set sort of lighting.

the question is, can i possibly finish this in 48 hours?

10 October 2004, 06:07 PM
phew. well, i hope i have time for this.

got an idea brewing...

sketches, etc. to come.

PS - good luck to all the entrants.

PPS - but not too much.

11 November 2004, 03:23 PM
aw, hell.

i just returned from my honeymoon and before i return to work tomorrow, i figured i'd put some time in on this.

...and then i see the warhammer cinematic on the front page.

that scenario, almost exactly, is what i wanted to depict in my entry. the whole "lone remaining soldier planting his flag against all odds" kind of thing. but now i'm not so sure i want to do that.

what do you guys think? can i still pursue my original idea or would it be better to go back to the drawing board?

11 November 2004, 09:32 PM
okay, i've abandoned my original concept for fear of being accused of unoriginality, but i've come up with something new and, i think, better.

the new concept will be a 40's/50's sci-fi theme. think of the old buck roders in the 25th century comic strips or the flash gordon serials of the 30's. maybe a little mars attacks! thrown in there, too.

so. retro campy science fiction. should be fun.

sketches to come.

11 November 2004, 02:31 AM (

initial sketches for the hero model.

11 November 2004, 02:34 AM (

concept for enemy robot/vehicle.

another enemy robot concept.

11 November 2004, 06:49 AM
heya, welcome to the challenge! Really enjoyed your MF entry, I'm sure you'll rock this one too.

concept sketches look cool.. very retro ;p

11 November 2004, 07:46 AM
Relly like those concepts, especially the two last ones.

11 November 2004, 02:17 PM (

(very) rough concept for the moon base (which will be being terrorized by evil martians, if all goes well).

11 November 2004, 03:02 PM (

concept for martian saucer

11 November 2004, 04:57 PM (

i've got more sketching to do, but i was excited be the prospect of modeling a flying saucer, so i took a crack at it.

11 November 2004, 05:17 PM (

fleshed out the martian soldier a bit.

11 November 2004, 05:18 PM
Cool looking saucers, and I like the POV in your moonbase sketch. I'm enjoying your retro approach. After all these years, and the hype on UFOs, can you actually imagine traversing great distances in one or two seater? The big disintegrator gun is right on! Are you going to button-tuck those seats? Nice work. Looking forward to seeing this scene.

11 November 2004, 05:20 PM
thanks Versiden and mr_carl. this is a bit of a departure for me, so i hope it turns out.

going to take a crack at sketching the hero spaceship and maybe modeling one of the robots.

11 November 2004, 05:23 PM

-DM thanks. i'm not sure what i'm going to do with the interior at this point, really. the composition i have in mind wouldn't really have any of that stuff visible, i don't think. but we'll see.

i also have a martian foot soldier in mind that will carry a mini-disintegrator rifle around.

11 November 2004, 05:30 PM
nice sketches and overal style
are you planing on some kind of cartoon shader?

that martian surely looks like kiff croker - especialy from the pose and expression ;)

i'm going to try to keep the style a little cartoony and a little realistic. the shading and visual style i'm going for is something like this ( (mars attacks! cards). highly saturated colors and a sort of pulpy look.

11 November 2004, 10:18 PM (

started some modeling for the martian attack robot.

50-ies are back ! Great work! :buttrock:

11 November 2004, 09:17 PM (

just for fun.

there will be another earth vehicle coming as well, by the way.

11 November 2004, 09:31 PM
Oh man! This looks good! It remind me of Thunderbirds meets Futurama :)

11 November 2004, 06:42 AM
I don't care if you win or lose, I just want a model kit of that robot. And the rocket. And the saucer.

11 November 2004, 04:52 PM (

working on ideas for the earth tank.

11 November 2004, 07:03 PM (

just creating some low-poly filler buildings to go under domes (probably) on the moon base.

11 November 2004, 09:01 PM (

i've started roughly blocking in my scene. the composition is going to be a big part of this scene's effectiveness, so i want to get it just right.

by the way, the filler buildings that i posted before are the ones in those domes. i'm going to start sketching some more detailed foreground structures soon.

11 November 2004, 09:07 PM (

detail of the low-poly buildings with the destroyer robot for scale.

You are really moving quickly, I like the style of your sketches and your models look very cool and stylish as well. Not much to criticise , everything looks good.

My GSO entry

11 November 2004, 02:48 AM
dammit, another cool thread to watch...
well ok if i must... this is looking pretty cool thus far, i like the retro look personally...

11 November 2004, 03:24 AM
wow u got the fastest mouse in the town, pal :P
i really love the retrofuturistc aspect, and the illumination, that glow that things have, really nice

11 November 2004, 04:37 AM
thanks for the feedback, guys. much appreciated.

and i think it only looks like i'm moving quickly. keep in mind i haven't touched the human and martian models yet, let alone thought about texturing.

i think i just have a pretty clear idea of where i'm going, so i feel comfortable jumping around in the process a bit.

11 November 2004, 08:30 AM
modelling coming along great.. very retro, I especially like the robot and the rocket ship

11 November 2004, 07:44 PM
i've decided to re-tool the tank design. i like it okay, but i think it could fit better with my theme. new sketches to come.

11 November 2004, 03:57 PM (

modified tank model.

i'm much happier with this version. i think it fits the theme much better.

11 November 2004, 06:12 PM
I like the style of the models, like old sci-fi magazine covers... I thought about doing something like this too, unfortunately I'm probably not going to participate this time...

Good job, and good luck!

11 November 2004, 08:30 PM (

texturing the destroyer robot.

11 November 2004, 08:31 PM
as you can probably see from above, i'm going for a sort of insectoid kind of texture for the martian technology / vehicles.

11 November 2004, 09:05 PM (

textre progress on the martian saucer.

11 November 2004, 09:50 PM
Looking great Jason.... the textures and modelling are very nice, I like your stile ....

I'll be around here, continue the good work...

11 November 2004, 12:54 AM
That robot is sooo retro awesome. Great work on the look. In my opinion it would be hella awesome if you could find a way to make it look like the 50s-60s movies looked. With all the toy cars and buildings, strings holding up the "saucers". Either way its gonna be awesome to see this one come together.

11 November 2004, 08:15 PM (

almost done texturing the vehicles.

this is also a test to see how everything looks in black and white. i haven't decided if i'm going to go that route yet, though.

11 November 2004, 08:33 PM (

quick sketch for another martian vehicle i'd like to include if i can find a way to work it in.

11 November 2004, 08:53 PM (

there we go. quick and simple.

11 November 2004, 09:10 PM
lol, this is awesome man.. it looks like something right out of Mars Attacks

black and white also looks really cool!

keep the updates coming ;p:thumbsup:

11 November 2004, 09:13 PM
nice work here man...!

11 November 2004, 09:14 PM (

been a few days since my last update, thanks to this guy. i've never really tried a human face before, so it gave me some problems.

i'm working on the martian model as well.

11 November 2004, 02:05 PM
Love the retro style. Black and white is a must in my opinion, although admitedly it would be a brave move. Overall I think it's a brilliant idea!

The head is very good epecially as it's your first try. I'd suggest shaping the underside of the chin a bit more as he looks a bit saggy and rounded there and I imagine that an heroic chap such as he would have chisels on his chisels :)

Good stuff, i'm looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

11 November 2004, 02:36 PM
swamps - thanks for the input. good point on the chin area. i'll re-work him a bit to try to give him a little more of a square jaw.

11 November 2004, 02:57 PM
hey very nice meling man... seems like ur taking the classical approach to ur opera...very nice.. bet of luck mate...btw is the lips sealed in the head model?.... it just seems odd to be, but hey thats just me... orite man... best of luck... keep updateing

11 November 2004, 03:53 PM
I really like the mix of 50's style in your designs!
one suggestion from my side, I think you should give the human character some style to, and not strive for realism there. because if you do, it will most likely(for me atleast) kill the spirit of the rest, it's very hard to make realisitc characters appealing, as u did with the rest so far.. go for style, sharpen up his face, exaggerate some parts, remove unnecessary details and you'll produce something great I'm sure.

11 November 2004, 04:06 PM
Hi there Jason

Great concepts and overall retro style! I'm totally into this kind of stuff...
Awesome work with the shaders as well, altough I do have a few crits...

First, the chitinous "insectoid" material on the robot should imho be a little darker on the edges to bring out the color on the centre... a fallof mask based on viewing angle should do the trick.

Also the glass on the flying saucer is lacking a more defined edge... think Buzz Lightyear's helmet in Toy Story... it's 100% fake but it works wonders!

Btw, great job with the head model, especially being your first attempt at this

Congratulations and good luck! See ya :)

11 November 2004, 04:23 PM (

working on getting a reasonable looking moon texture.

11 November 2004, 08:52 PM (

here, i *think* is the final robot model, rigged and textured.

11 November 2004, 08:57 PM
really nice Flinder your robot rocks , the textures and the overall design is perfect . Are you planning to add some little details with bump maps or displacement?

11 November 2004, 01:19 AM
wow , look great and unique , soft effect made image look retro, remind me of movie sky captain :>

11 November 2004, 02:04 AM
i really love your style/models, this is just amazing, gonna check this thread every day
keep up the nice work

11 November 2004, 03:03 AM
Great retro-look!! Reminds me of SKY CAPTAIN as well. You've really created a fantastic, stylish world here. Great job!
:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

11 November 2004, 04:47 AM
Ooooo I loooove the 50's sci-fi theme and your modeling is very good. Keep it up and I am looking forward to the end product!
My humble opinion is that the human lacks the "coolness" of everything else so if he is going to be prominent, perhaps develop him a bit more

11 November 2004, 12:59 PM
hey that is bender right?;) I like models, simple but nice done and looking good.I think human is too boring,he is done good, but maybe more super human type is better I think, but just my thought.I like work here, you are doing good.

11 November 2004, 03:40 PM
Excellent work, i like the sketch, modeling and texuring!!!

Keep going!!:buttrock:

11 November 2004, 07:32 PM (

this is about the level of detail at which you'll see the moon colony in the final, i think. there will be a few structures closer to the camera (i'm thinking about a monorail, for example).

11 November 2004, 09:47 PM

this is truely excellent work, I like the flash gordon style, and the lighting is superb

I would love to see this animated, at some stage. cant wait to see the finished work

very ominous and serene feeling. I like it. Definantly wallpaper material. :)

11 November 2004, 11:29 AM
Splendid modeling!!!:)

11 November 2004, 12:48 PM
exelent style, I really love the retro look.

Is the finale image going to be black and white?

11 November 2004, 02:05 PM
awesome. Bump maps maybe?

11 November 2004, 02:24 PM
wow, yet another amazing output from flinder... very nice man... but dude, u can put some ore details in the structures..btw that robot looks soo great just an instent clasic man!. :D...keep up the good works

11 November 2004, 02:56 PM
Lovely robot - looks like he wants a hug :) Great style you got going here - looking forward to see where this goes, keep it up!

12 December 2004, 09:25 PM
looking good man. I think going the B/W route works well for your concept.

12 December 2004, 09:37 PM
Great design i loved them all the robot, the aliens, the tank, the saucer great style
great concept design

cant wait to see more of this

more put more:bounce:

12 December 2004, 05:03 PM (

haven't updated in a while. here's the martian head model, which i've zbrushed just a bit.

12 December 2004, 05:08 PM
It is strange to see threads where there is nothing to crit or to change:shrug:
I like him! And all your work. I'll be waiting for something that I could advice:bounce:

12 December 2004, 05:23 PM
woooo!! Another Amazing work, everything is good!! no comments!

12 December 2004, 06:20 PM
Awesome... I love the 50's feel and I'm you can pull this off in B&W!

Great ship / character designs! Can't wait to see it finished!

12 December 2004, 06:41 PM
Looks amazing! Not sure I like the eyes though. I've never seen a depiction of a "Grey" with whites around the iris...They tend to all have Silver->black eyes or Irises that cover the entire exposed portion of the ball...

12 December 2004, 05:16 PM (

modeling / texturing progress. took the advice of toning down the whites of the eyes. i like him better like this.

12 December 2004, 05:28 PM
Hi flinder

I love your Retro style, and lighting, maybe space suit could be a bit brighter, over all it looks fantastic, cant wait to see the finished work,

Paul P Patina!

check my link!

12 December 2004, 09:08 PM
I liked the old eyes you had on your alien... very Tim Burton "Mars Attacks"-esque. I think the darker eyes make this piece seem a little more serious than maybe you're going for?

Just a thought...

Looking great overall though!

12 December 2004, 07:43 AM
whoa.. the alien looks wicked man.. the black and white really sells it.. good call!

I like the eyes, so much life.. he's almost like a cross btwn ET and those aliens from Mars attacks.. hehe

amazing work man

12 December 2004, 08:26 AM
Extremelly wicked details on this model man... Hadn't seen this thread before.... Good luck with the contest...

12 December 2004, 05:27 PM (

modeling / texturing progress on the hero model.

12 December 2004, 07:10 PM
looking good, my only comments is about the arms. they look too rubbery and I think they are out of proportion as well. There are 3 finguers that look like they are broken. One more thing, the knees look a bit too sharp, but it could just be the angle... I don't know how much of the character will be seen in your scene tho.

12 December 2004, 09:59 PM (

*completely* re-worked the body model of the earth guy. he is, i think, in much better proportion now. i'm not a huge fan of the current detailing (straps, etc) on him. i'm going to re-work that as well.

using references kinda helps.

12 December 2004, 10:34 PM
using references kinda helps.

Looks much better. I think that the feet might be too long and the heels need to be a bit more prominent. There is still something with the hands... I dunno, maybe the finguers are too long...

12 December 2004, 05:21 PM (

much better. i re-worked all the extra suit details. i feel this is a bit truer to 50's sci-fi costumes (and to my original concept sketch) than the first model.

i'm going to try getting his head finalized next.

12 December 2004, 08:12 PM (

okay, i think this is the final earthman model. i may do a slight tweak to the skin shader, but that's about it.

12 December 2004, 09:24 PM (

slightly tweaked and more or less final version of the martian model, with the earth guy in the background for scale.

01 January 2005, 03:43 AM
:bounce:Excellent work Jason, I love it. Keep at it. Have a happy safe and wonderful new year!

01 January 2005, 04:07 PM
well, it unfortunately looks like the chances of me finishing this in time are pretty slim. don't really have the spare time at the moment. it's not entirely out of the question, but not likely.

but, even if i don't finish, to prevent some of this stuff from going to waste, i think i'm going to put together a little mini-animation featuring some of these models.

thanks again to everyone who provided feedback. much appreciated.

01 January 2005, 06:24 PM (

trying to get my final scene and lighting scheme together.

i think my lighting approach will be very much along the same lines as a lot of my test renders. high-contrast, low-set sort of lighting.

the question is, can i possibly finish this in 48 hours?
