Maximiliano Rocamora has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Post Effects and Compositing: composition (

Added some chaos to the scene, the textures on the Arg-Battlecruiser are still missing, Ill work on that this weekend. Im thinking on some attacking lasers from the Fighters or the frigate. c&c are welcome.

10-18-2004, 05:23 PM
hey! my first challenge, I hope to finish this one. good luck to all!

10-20-2004, 12:57 AM
well, this is my first idea.
I'm really bad with drawing, so my skecht is directly from 3d. I hope you guys can get the idea.
the evil emperor is watching a lost battle, the soldiers of the space liberation army are already abording the mothership, and are really to kill him, and blow the ship.
some feedback about positions, proportions, color schemes, etc, is welcome.
Also I'm looking for new ideas using this two characters, maybe tomorrow I got new ones.

edited due to new ideas :P

10-20-2004, 11:31 PM
edited, new concepts down

10-20-2004, 11:32 PM
idea 1, some alien space soldier concepts

edited, (down again)

10-20-2004, 11:34 PM
plan B
a epic battle on and unknown planet, agains a huge-alien-controled-beast (a friend of my suggest to put the point of view on a foot soldier, maybe can work and add some in-the-battle sensation.)

edited, final concepts on page 2

10-20-2004, 11:35 PM
idea 3 (my vote goes for this one)

The classic space movie poster (maybe the bad emperor in front persp?)

EDIT check page 2 for concepts

10-21-2004, 03:15 AM
concept #4
I will keep the alien army idea and the empire felling. maybe this with diferent background or point of view. maybe some battlecruisers on the space... I dont know..

EDIT check page 2 for concepts

10-21-2004, 10:30 PM
totally diferent aproaching, the classic space battle, but the alien races has a squid looking cruiser.

The human battlecruiser "IRON FIST" and the entire spacec fleet falls into Katar's ambush, the katar spaceships have cloacking devices, and the main katar cruiser attack the big ship with mechanic tentacles, also anothers spaceship apearing in the scene, some enemy ship will have the effect of uncloacking.

any c&c are welcome...

EDit: this is the cg sckecht, if you want to see my ugly draws check page 2

10-21-2004, 10:43 PM
I like the same idea as you .... your stile reminds me to Julio Verne's novels ...

PD: I don't know if its julio verne or berne ..???

10-21-2004, 11:52 PM
thanks emo, maybe I get stick with the last concept, my only problem is the "ambush" effect. well, a challenge is a challenge!

pd: is julio verne

10-22-2004, 12:21 AM

I think you will be most succesfull with the idea 3. The forground with the soilders is great, but maybe put something different in the background.

peace and good luck

10-22-2004, 01:23 AM
thanks hiespike, the main problem with the movie poster, is the good guy, the movie has the army, the battlecruiser (is hard to see it, I will clean the picture later), the bad bad emperor, but the good guy is missing, the problem is, make a alien head is one thing, but make a human head... is another :S

10-22-2004, 12:33 PM
hey plaguelord u goin gr8 man... i like the drawings... specially the #4. i suggest to make it big like u can make the speech taking place infornt of a huge futuristic palace and up in the air put some aweosme looking ships and a LOT of croud... put some numbers of suns and moons too and there u got a GRAND SPANCE OPERA!!... just some idea from this nutty guy.... keep those wheels turning and u'll b there in no time...brb when u update...

10-22-2004, 12:55 PM
o hey another thing... up load ur images through the cg surver or else ur progress will not be recorded... i made the same mistake b4.. dats y m alarting others too;)

10-23-2004, 12:12 AM
thanks 3doid for both advices!

10-23-2004, 12:17 AM (

concept #3 - classic space movie poster... I'm still trying to choose the best concept.

10-23-2004, 12:20 AM (

concept #4 - the emperor and his space army, maybe something diferent for the background...

10-23-2004, 12:29 AM (

Concept #5.
The battlecruiser "IRON FIST" and the human fleet falls into an ambush of the Katar's forces.
last concept before I choose one.

10-23-2004, 12:37 AM
well, I have to questions, maybe somebody can help me.

1- What I must do when I choose the final concept? delete the old? I can upload any amounth of pictures on each category?

2- I cant decide! the poster, the army, of the ambush? heeelp

10-23-2004, 07:57 AM
I like the idea of approaching this as a poster. Thats really cool, looks good so far.

10-23-2004, 02:50 PM
Very cool ideas.

Perhaps all three images would work together using a 'montage' effect?

Place the Emperor among the stars with his hand outstretched, grasping at worlds. Fade out about mid-way to depict the space scene. And finally, at the bottom in the foreground, row upon row of soldiers.

10-23-2004, 09:17 PM
Maybe this for an idea. Use the octy attacking the ship in the midground. In the background have armies of Octies heading towards us, and in the near foreground have the humans armies looking on in horror!! This way you create 3 planes!

10-23-2004, 09:20 PM
I like those suggestions.
It would make an interesting composition.
Think about doing it.

10-24-2004, 05:18 PM
thank guys, the overall combining idea is cool, but is too much work for me, so I choose the Concept #5... I'll post some concepts of the battlecruiser and the katar squid soon!

10-24-2004, 07:14 PM
The poster idea looks nice - although, it almost feels as though it's lacking the idea of any kind of turning point. The space squid concept has that idea :P "We were on a routine patrol mission when some giant space squid starting sucking at the ship" o_O

10-24-2004, 11:19 PM (

This will be the final concept, maybe some color changes, ship positions or desing, more planets, star, etc. But this a close aproximation to the final idea.

10-24-2004, 11:39 PM
hey great job!! I like the concept!! if I can suggest, I'd do the squid very very mechanical!(you know, there are a lot of mech animals, I mean in that style) can't wait to see more!

10-25-2004, 07:42 PM
The Background

This is the retouched version of the background, I made it directly from max, theres is no photoshop on the picures or textures.
I used 3 pictures, the surface of mars, a stars picture, and a nebulae picture. I put them and corrected using Color Correct plugin, this is to see color instant feedback without going through PS.
The Planet is made from a sphere, and two Video Post filters, I use SCANLINE render to make only the background. One filter is Glow to make the yellow clouds and another Glow to make the atmosphere.
The space is a big sphere with inverted normals, one Blend Material, with the nebula and the stars material separated with a Noise Fractal mask. For the stars I use multiple speckle maps on the self ilumination map, and mix it with pure black. And the nebulae use a fallof PP to make the gradient from bottom left to upper right, again mixed with black.
I like the idea of a Deep Blue/Black space, with a strong contrast of the Orange/Yellow Planet. Maybe later, I make changes on the surface of the planet, to look more alien and less mars.

thanks and c&c are welcome as always.

10-25-2004, 10:07 PM
[oopps I guess I was a little late in replaying ]
Just keep posting your new concept.

As far as the idea,... try and use ref. from Nazi era Germany,... particularly Hitler military rallies,... he was a master at designing awe-inspiring formations using large number of soldiers.

I would consider also trying a different angle to the composition as the "front" view is a little in active. I think with a more "extreme" and distorted perspective you could engage the viewer more.

Also it would make the whole fascist get together just that spookier.

10-26-2004, 10:06 PM (

The main idea is a mix between a cargo spaceship and a cargo truck. With the removable container. The main function of this ship is transport any kind of supply. weapons, fuel, medical, food, or wastes.

10-26-2004, 10:09 PM (

The back view and the container function. It still need geometry details, but the rest is texture, because you will see this ship from middle/far distance.

10-28-2004, 02:14 PM
Hi, i really like the concept of the movie poster!! It can be very original! Like WazaRsayed, try to use reference from Nazi. Like the "propagenda" poster. (Good word? )
And the other is very cool too! Keep going!! And sorry for my bad english! :buttrock:

10-28-2004, 11:41 PM (

I dont know if I will add more detail, because this ship will stay at middle/far distance from camera. But maybe I will put some minor changes.

10-28-2004, 11:44 PM
another view

I hope you guys like the boxy look, I'm going to some "Alien the nine passenger" style. remember you must wait for the battlecruiser for high detail ship. :P

10-29-2004, 01:04 AM

I don't think you'll have to delete the unused concepts... I mean, where's the fun, if you can't watch how other talented people work their ideas out? :buttrock: :)

The squid " la Jules Verne" is an original idea... I also liked a lot the movie poster approach.

Looking forward to updates.

10-29-2004, 01:17 AM
sorry about that double, but I delete the pict coz this is my first challenge, and I link the images instead of submit them, so I submit again in the good way, and delete the double picture post.

thanks 4 the reply, a lot of people like the poster too, but I feel more confidence the verne's squid, and my only goal its only try to make a picture from beginning to end. So I choose more boxy spaceship instead high res characters

10-29-2004, 01:29 AM
Hey Plaquelord,
I like the idea of the movie poster and your model of the cargo ship is great. Just a comment the colors on the cargo ship seem very bright , is this how it is going to be in the final.
Good job so far.

10-29-2004, 01:41 AM
seems everyone is going back and forth about your concepts so I'll add my 2 centZ...I really was drawn towords the one wih the octosquid was very original...and I really think that ones forst Idea can usually be their best....keep going with that one ,,,you'll kick some aSS

10-29-2004, 01:53 AM
I agree with essencedesign, the first concept looked great

10-29-2004, 02:59 AM
mmoir: thanks, I'm having problem with the colors, light in space its no so easy afet all I guess. Also I'm looking for another combination instead blue/green.
Also I'm refining the cargo ship for a more low poly version, about 10k only. because I need 6 on them on the screen and they are very far from the camera.

essencedesign: thanks dude for your comment, be original its one of the most dificult part on the challenge, so is great when I hear that, and more great when it comment from a so talent guy (I checked your entry, just wow!)

joshcxa: thanks!

10-29-2004, 03:04 AM
hey! great backgorund art! good luck!

10-29-2004, 07:36 PM (

The final version of the cargo, 10k poly, 3 diferent textures. I'll need 6 of them in my scene. Also you can see a little closer comparing the final camera distance.

10-29-2004, 07:45 PM
I think that the colour of yor ship is a litle be too light....... in my opinion

10-29-2004, 09:21 PM
thanks, other people noticed that too, except me...
but here's a little cold version, I put more dark green on the container and grey blue on the ship.
I hope looks better now!

10-29-2004, 10:08 PM
hey, i think your idea is great. And early on you said you might have troulbes conveaying a sense of ambush, well i had a idea, maybe have a few small enemy fighters in back already uncloaked or in the process and engaging and then show one or 2 shooting while in a clear cloaked stage so all u see is the lazer or whatever and the glow on the clear ship (like a ghost effect).just a thought oh and the latest render of your transport ship looks much better.

10-30-2004, 02:36 AM
Go with the second color scheme... it's more dramatic. The other was too bright, like this last correction you made I'm liking them a lot more.

10-30-2004, 10:33 PM (

The first version of the human space fighter, its a very wip, maybe tomorrow I can post more updates.

10-30-2004, 10:36 PM (

Another view. the copkit and weapons are still missing. more updates later!

10-31-2004, 10:48 AM
THe ship has a definite Sixties SciFi feeling about it and I like that.

11-01-2004, 02:14 AM
thanks double, but forget that ship, I delete it... O.o

I'm not satisfied with the shape, I need something more boxy like the cargo. I want to make the human ships with that alien I style. I have to check the movies again for inspiration...

11-01-2004, 05:29 AM
Again and again I am reminded (in my daily life) of your space squid idea (I don't know... maybe I'm having a nervous breakdown?). :)

The only crit I had against it was that (IMHO) it didn't convey a massive, epic scale.

Then I thought... what if it was much bigger? What if it preyed upon worlds? What would it look like (from a futuristic city upon the surface) when it wrapped its tentacles around the planet and began to feed?

Just a passing (and recurring) thought. I know you're well on your way with the original idea, but thought I'd mention it. And anyways, I can't really think of a way to portray more than a part of the creature.

11-01-2004, 03:00 PM
thanks double, but forget that ship, I delete it... O.o

I'm not satisfied with the shape, I need something more boxy like the cargo. I want to make the human ships with that alien I style. I have to check the movies again for inspiration...
Plague, the image is yours, you can delete whatever you like ^_^ :deal:

This said, I liked the look, but at the same time I realize that it wasn't according too much with the others you posted.

Looking forward to see more.

11-01-2004, 04:25 PM
Modeling is great! I prefer the cold texture for the cargo, the first one was too "flashy".
The new modeling is cool too!

Keep going! :wip:

11-01-2004, 06:43 PM (

second attemp, I guess this fit better on the desing, more boxy, no use of meshsmooth. low poly count and nice shape, looks a little to a x-wing, but it not intentionally. :D

11-01-2004, 06:45 PM (

ARG-Fighter Render, any comments or critics are welcome.

11-01-2004, 07:28 PM
Wow - pretty cool stuff.

I much prefer the later of the two fighters, as it fits in better with the cargo ship (which is also more 'boxy'). I think that all ships belonging to one species etc. should have a roughly similar look, as they would be based on the same principal technology (consider the cars we have, all of them have certain aspects - wheels etc. - , most of them have other things in common - 3 or 5 doors, windshield, rearwindshield etc. - but their design elements have quite a large variation ---dunno if this is any help, it was a bit of a stab in the dark).

Anyway, nice work (if a little post happy, lol).

11-01-2004, 07:28 PM
here we go!! this second model is way better than the first
I dont know if this will have a big role/importance in the pic, in that case I would suggest to elaborate a bit more the textures. (maybe just add some procedural to dirty it up a bit)
I would also make those cannons bigger and more defined!
cool progress! :applause:

11-01-2004, 09:23 PM (

I started to texture the fighter, this is an example the wing area.
I have the paint material, the metal plates material, and the mask. (all made in ps)
I mix all together with a Blend Material.

11-01-2004, 09:27 PM (

this is my progress so far.
I guess I'll use the same technique for all the spaceship.

11-01-2004, 11:12 PM
I've noticed that one of your ship-models-style looks different from the main concept you seem to be using. But that's not so important... Keep it up... BTW I really like the color choise :)

11-02-2004, 01:44 AM
what ship? the light fighter? because the concept are mainly boxes. Maybe you mean the shape. I started the the arrow shape but I dont like it at all, so I change to the classic airplane shape.

thanks 4 the comment!

11-02-2004, 02:51 AM
Great job on the textures and the ships so far...jeeze I can't beleive you've gotten to texuring already...hey slow down a bit and let us all catch up pleze... :argh:

11-02-2004, 03:39 AM
hy man!! nice work, and nice ships.. one sugestion.. try to chanfer the coner-edges to get a more quad curve!

keep up!

11-02-2004, 04:30 AM (

This is final model and texture for the light-figthers. For the camera distance its not necessary make paint variations like the cargo's.
The material is a little bit dense, multiple blend's, mix and mask's everywhere!
Let me know if you like it! :D

11-02-2004, 04:35 AM (

Bottom view, the most fighter will be seen from this point to the camera.

11-02-2004, 08:22 AM
My most favorite image of yours so far is the background you had blended. Plan to do any more adjustments to it soon?

11-02-2004, 08:39 AM
I love the way the texture looks like paint that has been scratched etc. - very nice texture work going on here!

11-02-2004, 08:49 AM
Hey plaguelord

I really like your model and textures too, really nice .. the only thing I don't like so much is the text on the wings .. it is (in my opinion) a little too big and probably there is too much text (and it is repeated exactly on both wings, I think that breaking the symmetry would be better) .. maybe I'm biased by photos of real airplanes where the text on the hull is really small and much shorter (typically only some letters) ..

but please, take these as comments from a really beginners, so don't take them too seriously .. keep up these cool project and let us see more nice pictures, good work !!

Bye, Riccardo :)

11-02-2004, 10:30 AM
Very good texturing indeed. I think orporick is right, IMO you should try to avoid the repeating of the text on both wings. Maybe just one of them?

11-02-2004, 11:47 AM
Texture looks good.
Though i would suggest lowering the bump a bit...
keep it up:)

11-02-2004, 12:31 PM
Yeah, i like you ARG Fighter, its pretty cool and the textures too:thumbsup:

11-02-2004, 05:32 PM
wow, thank you guys for the reply's, these really help.
The tips for the text is good, in one wing can be better, I intentionally increase the size, because from the camera distance is difficult to see anything :S

Now I'll start the frigate, then the main challenge, the battle cruiser and the squid.

Also I will put an update version of the concept :D

for the background I will plan to make some changes on the planet surface.

11-02-2004, 08:44 PM
the Arg-Fighter looks better, thanks for the tip!!

11-02-2004, 08:47 PM (

The concept with the cargo's and fighters added. I plan to make the first left fighter on the screen explode against the squid tentacle.

11-02-2004, 09:20 PM
Hey, nice work so far! Cool texturing and composition of the frame. The squid's gonna be mechanic, matrix-like? Cool concept and great progress. Keep it up! I'll be checking it out frecuently.

11-03-2004, 01:29 AM
the layout for the image is a very nice composition, the details in the textures of the ship are nice, have you thought of using a displacement map on it?

looking good so far, show me more

11-03-2004, 02:49 AM (

Its very new, but this is how its going, I worked on it for 2 hours now. Too WiP for say something yet... I hope to finish the modeling tomorrow.

11-03-2004, 02:53 AM
thanks for the nice comment guys.

pablo, the squid will be a mix between high-tech/matrix metal/dark space creature :P just kidding, the main objetctive will be a strong and scary look.
dshelton, no, I use only a bump map, you have an example a few pages back.

11-03-2004, 08:11 AM
The concept is - I like the composition, and your space craft look great when put into context with the rest of the scene.

One thing I'd like to mention though. Whilst it's great to get the modelling done and out the way early if you can, trying to finish the modelling in a few days - considering you still have the main character (squid) to do, might take longer - so don't skimp on quality for quickness - if time is needed take it, 'cos I'd hate to see you waste a great idea...

so good luck with ya modelling, and show us what ya do!

11-03-2004, 02:58 PM
thanks Steve, your advice is good, but keep in mind this, the cargo, fighter, and the frigate, will be far from camera, so if they looks good at middle distance, is enough detail :D

I`ll plan to spend weeks if I need it to make the battlecruise and the squid. I`m also a little new to composition and post-prod, so maybe Ill need a lot of extra time to add colors, smoke, particles and explotions!

11-03-2004, 04:45 PM
Es bueno ver a un compatriota en esta competencia.
Tu idea es muy, Suerte!

11-03-2004, 05:11 PM
That ARG fighter is looking good plaguelord. I have one crit though. What color are the wings? You have this grungy look that is great, but weathering usually appears at the edges, especially the leading edges, but you have a nice blue at the edges, making it look like the other dirtier white color is the main color. If it were mine, I would switch the colors.

11-03-2004, 09:29 PM (

I'm my first attemp adding explotions and some layer composition. I hope is going in the right way.
Also you can see a progress on the scene, the completed spaceships and the new texture of the planet, the name of the planet is Paladin.

11-03-2004, 09:32 PM
Nice composition, and the layout angle is a good one.Quite a wild happening going on there Maximiliano.........(Like your name  )............I think you are getting along nicely here, pretty far along, with good results.......Keep it going strong.....:arteest:

11-03-2004, 09:33 PM (

Now with the frozen version of Paladin Planet. Tell if you prefer the warm colors or the cold colors. I'll add also some dark blue smoke-clouds on the squid area.

11-03-2004, 09:42 PM
its a tough choice but im kinda thinking the frozen planet looks a bit better, not so much visual tension between that and the clouds as in the organe one. And you models look great in the composition.

11-03-2004, 09:42 PM
I like both colors actually, the colors are two of my personal favorites.......It really depends on the rest of the planned color scheme for your models etc,etc....Battle would call for the orange/yellow,but a more aqua or frozen area would call for the Blue tones......either way I think you have a very nice color pallette to choose from with both, not much help here I know, but I can confirm that you have two very nice choices....:arteest:

11-03-2004, 11:54 PM
I can't be of much help here... only giving my personal taste: I like more the cold color version. maybe because I'm associating space with blue more than other colors...

11-04-2004, 12:02 AM
Just an idea but i think the blue one help to look more the battle, but it depend that what you woul like to show, what is the "center" of your image.

I hope you understand what i want to say...

11-04-2004, 12:40 AM
thanks guys, well, all of you and my friend vote for the cold colors, so be "Paladin the frozen planet"
I'll try even more cold colors, like dark blue or black/blue clouds.. but I'm still working on the Frigate, Steve was right, I need more time. so I need another day to finish the modeling stage of the ship

thanks all

Virtuoso, you are a politic/diplomatic? because you say a big explanation a leave more confused  heheh j/k! (yeah, my name sounds a little strange on some areas of this planet!!lol

11-04-2004, 01:08 AM (

Well, this is the color scheme for the planet, and the corrected ilumination, I hope to get a nice warm/cold gradient with the explosions and the squid falling to the green/grey metal, blue planet and deep space. Also you can see a little bit of the new Arg-Frigate. well, I have to take a break now... I'm tired.. see all of you tomorrow!

11-04-2004, 03:40 AM
Id just like to say that youve made a great start on your challenge. :)

I think the grey on the planet should go. Make the entire planet blue. Make the part that was grey a bit darker. ATM the blue/grey mix doesnt really look that good IMO.

Just posting some constructive criticism so your work will look it's best.

11-04-2004, 08:27 AM
love the whole giant space squid idea lol. Keep it up mate! Wonna see more!!1

11-04-2004, 08:38 AM
Very nice concept.

Looking at that fabulous squid thing it seems a shame that he doesn't have one of the smaller ships caught in one of his loose tentacles. The fighter crashing into one of them is cool, but what if he had grabbed one of those little guys and was waving him around?

Great stuff so far,

11-04-2004, 09:01 AM
Just a quick note to say i am watching ur thread, great model, REALLY great texture cant wait to see more, go bro go.

11-04-2004, 07:07 PM
thank you guys for the support, Its really important to me.

Rhezz, all critics are welcome, the gray halo is because I forgot the change the fallof from the light blue version of the planet, this night I will post a corrected version, I made some changes on the space too, its more cold and dark now. Now the atmosphere is more dark blue/purple, look much better, thanks for the advice!

swamps, the fighters are very small against the squid, but maybe he can grab a cargo ship... mmm, I will play with that idea tomorrow.. :D thanks!

11-04-2004, 10:44 PM
Looking cool - the planet looks good, but I'm really waiting to see the updated version before I comment fully - as I think then it'll look damn awesome.

It would be so cool if you could have the squid holding a ship, any ship! lol - it would just make the squid seem more powerful - the ship didn't just crash into him, but he's also attacking him.

Good luck - I'm eagerly awaiting your next installment.

11-04-2004, 11:24 PM (

I finish the model of the ARG Frigate. Its a bigger ship so the detail will look better from the camera distance.
Its around 30k polys.

11-04-2004, 11:26 PM (

Another view.

Nicely done maximiliano.................clean and smooth........A nice amount of details as well......Your Opera grows nicely.............:arteest:

11-05-2004, 11:14 PM (

Here's the textured version of the ARG-Frigate "Morning Glory". (I hope you like the name =D ) Some textures are a little repeated or the tiles can be see, but is enough detail for the size and camera distance. I'm trying to keep the style on all human spaceships.

11-05-2004, 11:16 PM
lookin good man, keep it up

11-05-2004, 11:21 PM
that is a cool idea!
men I can't wait to see that octopus done.

11-06-2004, 01:16 AM
Looking cool.I do like the name as well. Now how are you texturing already........;) ...I got some pallette ideas.but far far away from texture time....back I go to modeling, and I think you got a pretty ambitious plan here Maximiliano, and looks like your handling real well....Keep working hard,it's paying off...................Morning glory is looking nice....:arteest:

11-06-2004, 02:28 AM
Virtuoso, Canche, Nrek, thanks a lot for the support!!! It help a lot when you spend a lot of time on the challenge, I have to work tomorrow saturday but then I have all the weekend free, I plan to have a final scene ready to show (except for the main both ships of course). I finally choose the planet color and retouch the space texture. I'll try to refining everything before start the most dificult part on my scene, the battlecruiser and the squid.

I also want to share this new idea to the concept, I plan to add a dark cloud around the squid, like the real octopus leave in the water when they want to escape, I think this will add balance to the scene, and more fx stuff on the battle side. I'm also trying to define the idea of a ship trapped in a tentacle.

I have to push a little more my brain :wip: :wip: :wip:

11-06-2004, 06:05 AM (

Main Scene Update, new colors for the Paladin planet, space background reworked, completed version of the ARG-Frigate "Morning Glory", added. Almost finished before begin the main battle cruiser modeling.

11-06-2004, 05:56 PM
I'll start the battle cruiser, and I'm looking if somebody knows a fan-site o something with material about alien I & II, I forgot the name of the main ship, I just looking for references/inspiration, maybe somebody can give some links. thanks!

also if any want to give some c&c about the colors and background is very welcome. :wavey:

11-06-2004, 06:43 PM
i like the battle scene, looks like a massive war. just the planet behind, seems that it lacks athmosphere, anyway it's not yet the final image. move on:thumbsup:

11-06-2004, 07:59 PM
Cool, great scene, lots of dynamics :) Like uwil said, the planet needs atmosphere, only crit.
Your fast in this contest, keep it up!:scream:

11-07-2004, 02:07 AM
thanks guys, can somebody showme some ref pics of web sites? I'll try to put more effort on the planet, its a important piece of the composition.
I also start to make the concept a little bigger, the ARG-Fighters are almost invisible at this resolution.

11-07-2004, 03:15 AM
its lookig awsome. i think the planet looks good now but it needs that clow like it had in previous renders.

11-07-2004, 08:22 AM
looks -the ships are coming along nicely.

I look forward to seeing the main ship and the octupus become refined models, with all the intricate details you're putting into the other models (be it by geometry or textures).

I agree with the planet lacking an atmosphere - shouldn't be too hard to create one though.

Good luck.

11-07-2004, 10:09 PM (

I worked again on the background, I hope the planet looks good know, please let me know if the atmosphere looks good or its too big or too bright.

11-07-2004, 11:08 PM
In my opinion, the planet doesn't look real. THe atmosphere is weird. Should be more dense and maybe thicker. Also there is one star that is almost in front of your planet. And other stars should not be seen beyond the atmosphere layer. And the bump on the planet to heavy. If there is an atmosphere then image of planet should be blurred and hidden by some clouds maybe...

Dunno, just my thoughts when i look on your planet. Maybe I'm wrong. Hope it helped.

11-07-2004, 11:27 PM
I think it looks very vibrant, even beautiful.I dont think clouds to obscure things are always needed.....I love the clear clean look.I think the bumps are right,I mean for what we know that planet could have mountains many times the hieght of what we have here.......It is fantasy/sci fi..........I like it,I think it's cool, and vibrant.......Nice!:arteest:

11-07-2004, 11:43 PM
Thanks Andrey and Virtuoso, both opinions are very very helpful, about the bump, I'm more with Virtuoso, I know its a little heavier, but I prefer in that way, about the atmosphere, Andrey is right, I did'nt saw the stars around the planet, I will work on that. A very little more dense and thicker and be good.
thanks a lot guys!

11-08-2004, 11:03 AM
Personally, I like a lot the strong bump on the planet. Makes it look... alien :)

11-08-2004, 01:07 PM

i like the planet too... it's not look real, but it's look cool!
I think, it give the image a "fantasy" look, it can be nice, depend of your final render, but for me, i think it really can be cool.
Otherwise, nice update man! Keep posting!! :buttrock:

11-08-2004, 04:47 PM
Yeah, I have to agree - whilst it doesn't look 'realistic', that doesn't matter -for starters what is realistic, how many of us have actually seen planets with our own eyes in that much detail - only the lucky few - and so it can be argued that anything that varies on what we concieve to be a planet could actually be a planet existing somewhere in our cosmos.

Also, I think it gives a very alien feel, and I like that - so I wouldn't personally change it.

11-09-2004, 01:16 AM (

I started the Battlecruiser! For the modeling, I divide the model into several sections, Engine, Lower Body, Upper Body, Front, Control Tower, and Cannons. I started with the control tower, this area is very important because it gives a lot of personality to the ship. I'm going for a Alien Nostromo and Sulaco, my main inspiration. Its a bit early, but c&c are welcome as always.

11-09-2004, 03:44 AM (

update, back view, this side is finished, it even not be seen by the camera, but I want to make the model with much detail as possible.

11-09-2004, 03:45 AM (

update, front view, It still need some detail. But it almost finished.

11-09-2004, 05:22 PM (

Last update before I start to adding the battlecruiser, also I start to make the picture bigger, so more detail can be seen. The position of the ships may vary but the concept its close to the main final idea. c&c are welcome.

11-09-2004, 07:45 PM
Very cool! Maybe this ee... octopus should wave some of its tentacles really vigorously, smashing some smaller fighter into pieces and some of the derbis (like parts part of the pilot cabin) fling is much closer to the camera ?? Anyway have fun :)

11-09-2004, 07:50 PM
...dude, can't you see the fighter getting explodorised top left of the image? lol.

Looking sweet - so very very sweet.

Moon Dragon
11-09-2004, 08:00 PM
As for the space background, I would suggest toning down the glow on the dark side of the planet as it is supposed to be...dark. Also I would advice you to bring a greater variety to the brightness of the star field

Keep up the good work, and good luck dude! :)

11-09-2004, 08:17 PM
hahahah "explodorised" dude you make me laugh!! hahah I must add that word to my dictionary now!

moon, thanks, I'll keep in mind that, and play with the glow settings later :arteest:

taavi, your idea is cool, but, with this point of view, is too hard to achieve that effect, at least for me, I may conform with the explodorised ship on the left.:D (if you press on the picture, you can see it at bigger resolution).

11-09-2004, 08:20 PM
lol man, didn't you know?? Making up words is fun!

11-09-2004, 09:23 PM
That ship is getting great, keep on dude!!

11-09-2004, 09:30 PM (

The control tower is finished, time to move to another area. maybe then engine, because it needs little detail only, it very far from camera. I will save some heavy polygon area for the front.
Thanks all for the support!

11-09-2004, 09:37 PM

The scene is coming along very nicely , I like the models and there designs . Your image looks very promising.

My GSO entry

11-10-2004, 11:37 AM
Towers rock! I'm really liking what you're modeling.

 I just can't wait to see how everything will fit together.

11-10-2004, 06:17 PM
very nice modeling. the background is a bit better now, but still needs refinement... keep on:thumbsup:

11-11-2004, 02:44 AM
Last update before I start to adding the battlecruiser, also I start to make the picture bigger, so more detail can be seen. The position of the ships may vary but the concept its close to the main final idea. c&c are welcome.
El detalle de tus modelos es muy bueno.

It is looking good, keep doing such nice stuff.

Buena suerte en el challenge!

11-13-2004, 12:32 AM
hey guys! thanks again for the support and nice comments, I've busy and I can post updates now, I hope to put the next part (the engine) of the cruiser in the next few days.

thanks and have nice weekend!

11-13-2004, 12:42 AM
hey this is sweet... i like those sturctures... and ur rendering test is really nice... i'm liking ur idea.. keep it up bro

11-13-2004, 07:01 PM
Hey there!
Very great control tower, cool details, like the antenas and pipes, thumbs up! Looks something like a deck on a cruise ship :)
Keep up the good work!

11-13-2004, 10:11 PM
really nice ! Modeling is great ! keep the faith !
The only comment I would do is that in my opinion, all the spaceships go in the same way... Should be nice if there's something more chaotic in the flight of that group of spaceships...

11-14-2004, 01:46 PM
Nice modeling for the ARG Battlecruiser Control Tower, great details!
Waiting for update!! :buttrock:

11-15-2004, 09:00 PM
The modeling and texture mapping is fantastic. I just have one concern. In your current concept art the ships are all facing forward. In the midst of all of this there is a large octopus creature attached to an obviously important large ship. The detail work of the explosion from the outstretched arm is done very well. I just wonder why other ships are not attacking the creature. I guess you could say, how did they entire fleet miss this thing coming to attach itself to this ship. I like the way its attached but it feels disconnected from the rest of the entire piece. Perhaps you might make the scene more chaotic with ships flying toward the camera getting enough distance to turn around, maybe so have completed the turn and flying back toward the creature for another pass. Anyway, I love your work so perhaps a few minor changes might bring your comp up to par with the rest of your work.

11-15-2004, 09:40 PM
hola dude!! what a great progress!! I love those towers, very detailed and good looking!!
the composition is good the texturing and lighting on that planet is really awesome!! I really like how this pic is shaping! keep rocking!

11-17-2004, 10:31 PM
I like your concept idea. The giant space squid into a surprise attack is very good.:bounce:
Maybe the entire fleet is a little too organized?
Keep up the good work dude!!

11-17-2004, 10:45 PM
me gusta mucho tu composicion plag' tal vez deberias poner la nave que esta atrapada por el pulpo como si ella se fuera hacia abajo debido a el peso del pulpo que quite la trajectoria de las otras naves le daria tal vez una impression mas dramatica...

translation attempt: i like very much your composition but maybe it cool be cool if the main ship caught by the spaceoctopus take a different direction of the other ships like goin down due to the strenght of the octopus could be more dramatic impression..but it's just a suggestion..sorry for my dramatic english:shrug:

11-28-2004, 07:19 PM (

The engine (back view)

11-28-2004, 07:22 PM (

another view, the details are not visible to the camera but I want to model the entire ship.

11-28-2004, 07:25 PM (

I started the hull, its far from finished but I want to share the wip. This is more the camera view perspective.

11-28-2004, 07:44 PM (
click on the picture to see it bigger

overcontrast: thanks man

kaksht: thanks! Yeah, me main idea it make it look like a naval ship deck, to make the ambient for the squid scene.

gpepper: thanks for the opinion, yea a lot of people are saying that, too organized fleet... I will work on that!

SuperXCM: thanks a lot!

DM: (I cant read your nick! lol) thanks dude, originally, tha idea was a \"ambush\", and thats why the other ships still not see it, but I guess I failed to transmit that idea. Maybe I will change the idea of the scene more to a space-battle.

oblivionblack: Thanks a lot for the kind words, I really like your entry and your work is impressive, its really good to receive your support!

proctavian: thanks man, yeah, the same organized problem!

jaba153: muchas gracias! Coincido contigo, el crucero va a estar inclinandose hacia el calamar, esta en esa posicion porque todavia no lo termine de moledar :P
T: thanks a lot, I agree, the battlecruiser will be fallin to the squid, is in that position because Im still modeling it!

Now about the picture:

Hi again, I make another render, with the updates on the battlecruiser and another color for the squid, plz let me know what you think. maybe its too strong...
Im really busy so thats why I can post updates on the week, maybe the next weekeed I can post the battlercruiser finished.
Thanks again to all for the support, and sorry for not having time to reply on your entrys, but believe me Im following all of them!

11-28-2004, 08:40 PM
Nice update, i like the engine excellent!! Keep it up!!

11-29-2004, 02:53 AM
Just wanted to say that it's coming along nicely. Good work!

11-29-2004, 09:28 AM
The engine looks really cool. Looking forward to seeing the ship textured.

12-12-2004, 08:56 PM (

weekend update

12-12-2004, 09:01 PM (

another view, still left the most important area (the front) and some minor details. I wont and more detail coz the poly count is going high and most of the detail cant be seen from the camera view.

12-12-2004, 09:05 PM (

Battlecruiser updated, I will need more time to finish the model and texture it.
Also I will need two weeks for the squid... I dont know if I can finish it in time =(

thanks to all for the support, the nice coments and feedback!
To the next weekend!!

12-14-2004, 02:34 AM (

I finish the model, I added the last details more to the camera view. It has 50k polys. The result is not what I have in mind when I started modeling it but I have to hurry if I want to finish the picture in 1 month.

now I will move to the textures or maybe I start to model the squid...

12-14-2004, 08:47 AM
your concept is really cool, it 20000leagues meets space adventure..
wicked stuff, great modelling

12-18-2004, 09:46 PM (

the space octopus, I choose a simple body with some details, I dont want to put too much detail on it cause the battlecruiser had enough high-tech level. For the ock I choose more metalic and rustic style, because its from another civilization. I hope looks good and fits well in the scene. Now Im moving to the texture of the battlecruiser.

12-23-2004, 03:03 AM (

Added some chaos to the scene, the textures on the Arg-Battlecruiser are still missing, Ill work on that this weekend. Im thinking on some attacking lasers from the Fighters or the frigate. c&c are welcome.

01-14-2005, 01:38 AM
Well guys, Im off from the challenge, not enough free time to finish it. I just want to say thanks to all for the support.
I saw really good work here and meet cool people, my best wishes to all!
