Latest Update: Texturing: Mountains Shading (

I started texturing the mountains . This is far from beeing finished but i would like some comments/crits if this goes into the right direction to looking good .

Ok here we go :bounce:

Storyline :

We are in a galaxy far far away on a planet where the nahoe live .
The nahoe are a very primitive humanoid civilization who are not very far in evolution ( they just found out how to make fire ) .On another planet in their solar system are the tynar living . The tynar are much further in evolution flying to the stars and knowing a lot . The tynar see it as their task to make sure that the nahoe dont get disturbed and are able to live their simple and peacefull live . But one day the carim come into the solar system and try to get on the planet of the nahoe . The carim dont have an own homeworld they are heading from planet to planet taking all natural ressources and kill or slave the native . So the tynar decide to defend the nahoe .

This is what my picture will show the final battle between the tynar and the carim and an old nahoe watching the fight from high up on a mountain

Concept art will follow in some days i have to first get my scanner back from a friend

There are still some elements missing that i will ad asap . 2D sketches will follow as soon as i have my scanner back

Wow. A lot of things going on here! You've got a lot to do :)

It looks like there are a bit too many ships in the sky but that might just be me...

10 October 2004, 02:24 PM
Wow nice concept. I like the story line. But it looks more like a rally than a battle at this point. But I like it nonetheless.

10 October 2004, 02:32 PM
Hi EvilE. Looks nice! I like the terrain and POV.

Will the Tynar and the Carim have ships the same size (all the ships in the sketch look to be the same size)?

If one race had a few very large ships and the other had many small ships it might add some drama.

The Nahoe would certainly be frightened by the battle. Perhaps they (a couple of their bravest warriors) would be peering from behind rocks in the foreground?

Just some ideas. Great work... I look forward to watching this work progress.

Quick concept sketch made in painter

10 October 2004, 09:40 PM (

Heres a lil wip of the Tynar fighter . I still have to refine the form a bit more , join/blend the different surfaces and model all the finer details ( but not today ) .

10 October 2004, 10:09 PM
Very nice modeling on the fighter ...true to your concept....I agree this will look killer when you've got it all finished....

10 October 2004, 11:10 PM
The fighter model has tidied up very well from the sketch - all the curves and proportions are better in the 3D version - it looks great.

Your composition looks a bit flat at the moment. It separates too easily into four equally sized horizontal stripes:
1) Foreground
2) Midground with lots of people
3) Mountains
4) Sky with spaceships

Anything you might do to mix up the regularity of these stripes would enhance the interest of the composition. The mountains have a slight U shaped arc, perhaps that could be increased. The foreground is a slight diagonal, perhaps it could curve instead?

The armies (?) in the plains are grouped in two sections, but within the groups are very evenly spread - clumping them together more could make it more interesting.

Looking forward to seeing your other concept sketches for this.

Thanks for the comments guys and keep em coming .

Your composition looks a bit flat at the moment. It separates too easily into four equally sized horizontal stripes:
I already thought about that and what i came up with is :

1) The Foreground ( where the old man stands watching later ) should stay a bit seperate from the battelfield
2) I will remove the canyon in the middle of the scene and run a little particle sim to mix up and distribute the 2 armies better
3) The mountains are also still standins and in no way look final so they will change quite a bit
4) maybe i can connect sky action -> ground action by making some of the planes shoot in ground direction and make some transporters drop troops so that it looks like 1 big battle and not one in the sky and one on the ground

Very successful POV in that first block sketch

Good luck!

This should be enough detail for the size the jets will have on screen and i am also quite happy with the overall design . Now to the texuring of this baby :)

EDIT : Click the image for a larger view

really really cool ship model, wish you best of luck :)

10 October 2004, 03:31 PM (

This is only a little test to see how many jets i can render in one pass without asking for trouble . In the picture are around 3500 Jets rendered in around 1 minute @ 1280*1024

10 October 2004, 07:12 PM
Wow, thanks for the test render - I know lots of other people are going to be battling with how to render so many ships at once with this challenge (Including myself).

This is the sorth of thing that is a bit easier for a 2D artist - just paint 20 good looking spaceships then a mass of messy strokes to hint at the rest - the eye makes up the detail itself.

I am very interested to see how you manage to turn a sea of little ships into a dynamic composition - I am guessing it will be quite tricky, perhaps involving some broad sweeps of dense ships to give some form to the overall impression. Good luck!

10 October 2004, 08:28 PM (

I worked a bit on the backgrounds mountains i am still not really happy with them but have not much time under the week . There will be way more updates on the weekend :)

10 October 2004, 08:36 PM
I've got one of those weeks as well - I feel your pain :D

You've at least got some mountains started... Sidenote: it's usually a bad idea to make testrenders on a black background as it gives you a totally skewed impression of the object and the shader.... good rule of thumb is to render on 50% grey most of the time...

10 October 2004, 08:58 PM
I like the basic concept of the initial idea although I agree that it seems a bit busy, especially the sky. It seems as if there is just too much going ono up there. Is there two armys that will be shown on the ground battling it out for the hill or is it just one army advancing? Just curious, so that I can get a better idea of what you're going for.

10 October 2004, 08:59 PM
Thanks for the hint .

10 October 2004, 09:18 PM
Those are two armys on the ground but the positions of the soldiers as the positions of the airplanes in the first pic will change totally they are just there to give me a sense for the scale and as a help to find the best camera position. And they are not fighting about the hill but about the hole planet.
I hope that clears things a bit up

10 October 2004, 09:22 PM (

Remodelled the terrain again . I like the overall form way more than the other . What do you think ?

10 October 2004, 03:52 PM
Just got some work on the table that will need nearly all my time
So no or only very few updates till mid december .

10 October 2004, 04:56 PM
Too bad about the work... But you'll still have a month to go afterwards then - you'll make it :wip:

10 October 2004, 06:03 PM
... and what i didnt tell : i am 2 weeks @ home over christmas so time enough then

11 November 2004, 09:38 AM (

Ok i know i suck at drawing :)
I tried to make him look more primitive than a "real" human by making the mouth and the nose getting more in the direction of an apes mouth/nose.
Comments and crits are very welcome

11 November 2004, 10:35 AM
so primitiv schaut er gar nicht aus. gib ihm eine breitere stirn und einen flacheren hinterkopf und vergiss die augenwuelste nicht. viel spaß so lang ^^

11 November 2004, 10:51 AM
coming along nicely.
you succeeded in making him look more primitive, but I agree you can exagerate it a little more to get the idea fully through.
The mouth comes forward like a primate, but imo it should be a little bigger, specially the upper part and pulled down a bit.

but if you don't want to go for imitating real creatures like apes or primitive men, yours is looking great as it is, just unique

good luck and hope you find the time to work on it further :)

11 November 2004, 10:53 AM
Englis(c)h please :)

Hey, nice terrain...
I think it´s not easy making such good looking

11 November 2004, 08:32 PM (

This was FOR SHURE the last time i redid the terrain there will only be some minor tweaking on this one . Comments and crits are welcome :)

11 November 2004, 09:38 PM (

I started texturing the mountains . This is far from beeing finished but i would like some comments/crits if this goes into the right direction to looking good .

11 November 2004, 09:57 PM its a pain in the b... to have several terrains with several subversions in the same folder . I started texturing the wrong terrain
...anyway the same material ( when i have finished it ) will work on another terrain too

11 November 2004, 04:52 PM
Nice, the canyon looks really good. I wonder though what it looks like when your not a mile in the air. :D

Good texturing

11 November 2004, 06:45 PM
Looks really good

11 November 2004, 11:40 PM
