Latest Update: Rendering: PS test (

Please read the following:
This is just some single renders, tried to make a collage in PS, to find some sort of comp. Thats why the light on the objects donīt match the sun position. I really have a hard time trying to figure out a way to position these objects, to make some sort of sense.....a little clumsy in this attempt, hopefully Iīll get there.

See you all

Got started a little late. This is my idea; First of all, have decided to make the story around the moon as we know it...only some 100 years from now.
A big astroid has collided with the moon, which has created an astroid field. We(earthlings:)), is mining this field. Big colonies is spread all over the astroid field, which contains lots of rare metals etc. Especially fragments from the original astroid is in big value. My story is simple; some has good fragments, others donīt. So the story has no aliens or anything else, only people from earth, fighting each others fragments.

I think Iīll go ahead with this idea.
By the way, Iīll build cities at the moon also.

11 November 2004, 02:41 PM
Like the idea.

If this sketch is what you want in frame for final image, you may want to lose the block at the very top. Cut off a bit much, hard to tell what it is.

11 November 2004, 04:44 PM
Hi again

Well, the blocks...I know itīs hard to tell what they are, because they are just blocks. They are stand ins for som great ships, maybe. Only know that something big is going to be over the city. -(and a lot of smaller things atacking the city from these big crafts...).

Thx for the reply

11 November 2004, 10:04 AM (

This is a little idea of a flag, made out of the following flags; russian, chinese, U.S.A and EU. This should be a part of the texture for my international police force in space, protecting the fragment colonies from one another...hehe, Still not sure if I should go forward with this. My concept lacks a little adventure feeling, and I have trouble finding a way to make my background starfield interesting, as it is a little boring around earth, compared to what I see in others works. But alot can happen in our neighbourhood out there in a couple of hundred years, so maybe I\'ll figure it out.

11 November 2004, 10:11 AM
LOL! The idea is interesting, and I think that flag you came up with is hilarious. Not in a bad way. I mean it looks PLAUSIBLE, which is what's funny about it. One day, who knows what the geopolitical landscape will look like. Maybe yours...

11 November 2004, 01:26 PM (

This is a sketch of a figther carrier, designed to fly the distance, then launching thousands of smaller figthers from itīs big docks. There will be some kind of energy shield between the four main sections providing normal atmosphere in the two main docks. Hope to have some models soon (right now working on a big city)

11 November 2004, 01:54 PM
Hi there and welcome! Nice idea here! But I don't understand why you would like to include only humans in it. Doing that, you are in my opinion limiting your imagination, because all the ships/construction should be close to our reality. Not too much freedom to make some unique stuff. You can for example place humans and some aliens who want these matals, and united humanity that is protecting it. I think this would more epic. But it's your story:) . I like the general idea, and like your fighter carrier:thumbsup:

Good luck dude!

11 November 2004, 02:19 PM
You can for example place humans and some aliens who want these matals, and united humanity that is protecting it .......yeah...I know....Well, I will be limited in my imagination. But then, as said earlier, a lot can happen in a couple of hundred years. And I think it would be a challenge to make this picture interesting. And as I havenīt seen anybody else making it without aliens, it could be the originality it needs. I donīt know, it might change, because itīs a good idea to let aliens attack!.......hmmmmm

11 November 2004, 04:03 PM
It looks very promising, also like the story, plz let us see more ^-^ keep up the good work.

11 November 2004, 05:46 PM
I find it so interesting. I mean, its our moon, so simple, yet you're totally right, anything can happen 100 years from now. I really think it has potential. I just dont see the humans fighting ofr the metals... maybe if there are some pirates? or just the good ol' aliens as someone mentioned...Good luck!

11 November 2004, 09:35 PM
It looks very promising, also like the story, plz let us see more ^-^ keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot. -and I will, donīt have time right now to really get started, but weekend is coming.....!!!

I just dont see the humans fighting ofr the metals... maybe if there are some pirates? or just the good ol' aliens as someone mentioned

The reason they mine metals; (hehe) At the time I submitted that entry, I did not know how to describe it, english isnīt my native language. I meant minerals generaly. The pirate idea isnīt bad...hmmm, well any person or group attacking another for goods could be described as a pirate, so maybe I'll call them that from now on.

Now my moon idea; What I see of potential in the moon is a lot. Iīm inspired of the movie "Contact" with Miss Foster. In the ending she travels through some worm holes, with breaks sometimes. In one break sheīs outside an alien planet, where you can see that an intelligent life form has retouched the surface. I can't describe my visions for the moon better, but if I can make something in that direction, it would look awesome...

Love to see when someone has an opinion on this work, even though it's so much in the sketching fase...(hope I can soon show some quality work, as I see it in this challenge all the time!)

11 November 2004, 12:17 AM
impresive scope there man .... shaping up to be a very impresive image when its done

11 November 2004, 08:51 AM (

My carrier is taking form. I still need to work on the front, the bridge, and the guns(my first attempt with the guns is present here, it looks more like cactus needles, hehe). Have started texturing the outer wings, even though itīs hard to see in this picture. Have tried to make the overall shape a little...hmmm, donīt no the word for that, but the opposite of smooth and round...!!!(?)(Blockish(?))...The figthers will be more smooth, as they are build to fly in atmospheres as well as outer space.

Hope you like it.

11 November 2004, 04:08 PM
Kragh, I like the design of the ship. Definitely work on it. It has lots of possibilities for incorporating landing bays, cannons, observation areas, etc.

I think it is easier to model something when you first:

- decide the function of the ship
- incorporate the creating race's aesthetics into the shape
- delineate where the major parts of the object's functionality are located

Then, you think about how things are constructed and attached. From there, I add details as I go along.

11 November 2004, 09:23 PM
 very good start!! everything looks very promising :bounce:
the sketch is great and the modelling is good too!
the city/colony task can be a suggestion is: plan it first! and take it easy.. (unlelss you have a render farm :p)
I'll be surely looking how this develops!

11 November 2004, 03:50 AM
Looks good to me. I might add the gouge on the moon
made by the impact. Maybe make that look spooky,
like it could come appart more.
The Guidelines state something like this(my words/interpretation):
This challenge should involve more than just humans, our earth
and moon, our near neighborhood. The basic theme
is supposed to be grand in scope as in beyond our solar
system. That is exactly why you noticed that nobody
else uses just our solar system. You might just give the planet
a weird alien name, and if
you want that same flag could be used adding an alien
planets colors too, something like that. Because it is a neat
concept. Hey, that's why this is a challenge, because of
the guidelines we all have to adhere to yet be as original
as possible. That's what makes it fun.
Just click on the introduction button on the far left of
the Grand Space Opera challenge page, that explains it.

11 November 2004, 04:40 PM
Hey man, cheers for you C&C on my thread, I though i'd return the favour.

You mentioned that you are thinking of giving up on this one and cracking on with the 2d comp instead, but I reckon this would be a mistake. The ship looks very promising to me and the concept is definately sound so jacking it in now would be a shame.
It does get hard to find the time though doesn't it? I'm making the most of my girlfriend being away in LA on business for a month. Once she's back i'm sure she'll put an end to my nightly vigils :)

Anyhow, i'd offer my critique but really everthing you've done so far looks good to me. Let's see some more, you don't really need that job of yours, do you? :)

11 November 2004, 11:23 AM
The ship concept is good and the modelling is as good as the designs. You said you working on a big city? Let's see it. Speaking of time, I have an exam on friday and im still doing 3d

11 November 2004, 02:31 AM (

Oh, my entry still exists??:)...Well, havenīt updated this in a while.
Have worked some more on the fighter carrier, as it needed some details. The back, even the jets, havenīt been designed jet. So still a lot of work in this one. Also, the front is very simple for now, need to work on that part too...-and the Lower deck...Havenīt even started on that...(!!!)- Damn, Iīll never make it!
But anyway, here is some wip shots of it.
Btw, have also worked on a figther, Iīll post some pic of it in an hour or so.

11 November 2004, 06:53 AM (

Hereīs a figther I,ve been working on. Needs alot of work i.e. the nose is too pointy. Also the wings have some problems. Started out by modelling the most aerodynamic shape I had in my livingroom...; My logitech mouse. But it became too clumsy when I attached wings on it, so had to stretch the body, making it longer. You can still see the original mouse, though:)

Need some c&c on both the carrier and the figther(especially the fighter, just not sure about it), just to get back on track. tomorrow Iīll post the city I have made. Itīs supposed to be in the background so itīs pretty low-poly.

bye for now (And goodnight!!!)

11 November 2004, 03:29 PM
wow man... thats some kick ass modelign u got there... great ship design... ur just amazing.. keep up the good works... i'll b keeping my eyes on this thread

11 November 2004, 08:24 PM (

Hi there

First of all, thx for the replies. It seems that it could be a problem with my nearby concept around the moon. I have desided to follow the advice about an alien attack, just to make sure it wonīt be an issue in the final judgement. Thx overcontrast for the kind words, that made my day!!!

About this picture; Itīs, as I wrote in my last post, a pretty low-poly city, as my computer just canīt deal with more. Also, itīs supposed to be in background as Iīm planning to make som foreground buildings with some more details. Still need to work on some of the maps, especially the colormap, as it is a little the same all over the city. Also the black-white mask that controls if the lights in the windows is on or off, needs some work as it doesnīt match that well(meaning, in some windows there are half lightning and half darkness...!).
But in this testrender it doesnīt seem to show that much of that problem.
Btw, the background is added in photoshop, just to check somethings. There is supposed to be some mountains behind the city, as it is placed in a crater on one of the fragments(see concept description)

C&C are welcome, also on my two last posts!!!

11 November 2004, 02:18 AM (

Have made some extra detailling work on the carrier, and have made a basic texture for the receiver dish. Hope you like it. (c&c?)

11 November 2004, 02:32 AM
Yes I do like it Henrik..............The overall idea is a good one,and your modeling is looking very nice.Good attention to details and the plan of yours will work well...........It's all very nice work,my favorite for now is the has some fine lines and a nice flow.......Keep up the nice work, your doing quite a good job here.....:arteest:

11 November 2004, 03:01 AM
Hi again

Iīm pretty surprised that the fighter should be the best...:) That was just not what I thought, personally. Maybe itīs due to the fact, that I, at the time, only see all the failures in it (intersecting polys on top of the wing, too pointy nose, bad connection between the body and the wings) At the time Iīm just not satisfied with the fact, that this fighter was supposed to look like a logitech mouse, and that it just not looks like I had imagined.

But thx alot for the kind words, as they makes me :bounce:
I thought I wouldnīt post anything in your entry, seemed too crouded:)
But Iīll return the favour when time is for it.

11 November 2004, 07:42 AM
Hi Kragh,

nice idea. It looks like your planet could be the home planet of my aggressor spezies :-)
I like the idea of a "dark planet". Keep going...

11 November 2004, 12:25 PM
Hi again

I enjoy so much, when someone comment my work, but this last one is off track...:) -has nothing to do with my concept anyway. Just to clear up this mistake; I have no "dark metal planet" in this entry, but I understand why you could make that mistake, so no problem. The reason my city looks like a planet could be the shape of the city. It has an overall cirkel shape at the outer border, because itīs supposed to be placed in a crater. But as I havenīt made the crater, and have placed a starfield behind the city, I do see the planet.

But it isnīt!!!

11 November 2004, 02:20 PM
great modelling, and design style unique for the fighter and carrier

keep it up

11 November 2004, 07:21 PM
Hi Kragh,

sorry about the mistake. My fault, as often I just looked at the images and read the headers.

11 November 2004, 12:46 AM (

After deciding that some aliens should be the attacking force, I have tried to make an alien ship. Itīs supposed to be some sort of symbiosis between an alien creature and some mechanical devices. Now, this is very much wip, so please ignore wholes etc., as I have only worked on it this evening. Have also tried to make some colors, but itīs very unlikely that this is the final color scheme for this ship.
-And yeah, I know itīs a little clichee with this bug look-a-like form for the alien, but I donīt care for now.

C&C would be appriciated...!

11 November 2004, 08:34 PM
Nice modelling, I like the design as well. The mothership and fighter no comments! Great!

11 November 2004, 09:57 PM
Hey! Big jump since I last visited. Looking very impressive. Inspiring me to
get on with some texturing. I've been photographing textures. Your insect-
fighter looks cool (as do all the others) and it seems like you'll have some
fun texturing it further. My 2 cents is keep up the texturing, now if I can just
do that...Maybe the bug could use some slimey textures and some dry cracky
ones...or am I nuts?

my 3d entry (

11 November 2004, 10:12 PM
I like the Bug look in alien craft. Looks like a pond skipper?

Very cool

11 November 2004, 10:53 PM
Man..your spaceships are great...many details everywhere...the only ship that strikes me a little bit wierd is the alien one(your last)....mainly becuase it looks a bit like an amphibian (pond reptile..sorry don't know the word in English)..but maybe texturing will give it the alien look u want more :) .....nice stuff

12 December 2004, 06:02 AM
wow.. you have some great modeling here Henrik!
very cool stuff and i like it a lot!
this huge city/moon panorama is great as well! low poly? very good textured though..
great stuff mate overall! keep it up and cheers..

12 December 2004, 10:08 AM
Impressive modelling and quality... wow  the city is really amazing...

12 December 2004, 05:51 PM
Great modeling & textuting; the city is ... enormous.

12 December 2004, 11:21 AM (

Hi again

Now, I worked on my alienship last night...and Iīm pretty sure I donīt like it that much. I have changed the original plan of making it a symbiosis between an alien and some mechanical stuff. Now itīs just weird mechanical stuff......I think this is probably the weirdest thing Iīve ever done. And it still need so much work to look just a little bit good. Think Iīll drop some of the "landing" legs...

c&c hopefully

12 December 2004, 01:20 PM
That carrier is awesome and the alien ship is great
the city is awesome excellent design:arteest:

cant wait for more:bounce:

12 December 2004, 02:16 PM
tzktime: Thank you, youīve made my day twice now

userBrian: No, you are not nuts (well, a little, your entry is crazy...:)). As I thought I had dropped my idea of the alien creature/mechanical stuff idea, I would say no slimy things here. But Iīve just rethought it, and I think Iīll dump everything I made last night, and turn it back to the original idea (the symbiosis). Also, the model has not improved in quality, with my last effort. So maybe some slime afterall...?

VHashishV: thx mate. Well, I donīt know what a pond skipper is...I know what a pond is, and I too saw a froggy shape, so I think we agree. I was trying to remove this look(the "Dimitris" effect:)), mainly altering the rear legs. But my new attempt looks shitty imo. So back to start, what the hell if it looks like a frogg, they are scary anyway...:)

DimitrisLiatsos: thank u very much. This is actually the first time I try to really work on details. I normally do it with maps, but saw so many great, detailed designs in here, and had to try myself. Glad it looks good. Think Iīll go for the pond reptile look, but I think it will look better, when I attach some mechanical stuff on the rear legs.

greentek: Also, thx for the kind words. Seems Iīm heading in the right direction. The city is ofcourse not low-poly, if you count all polys in the entire city(Around 1.500.000). But as this is a newyork sized city(I guess!!!), that is not much. Iīll make a closeup shot on one of the buildings, so you can see for your self, how simple they are...And believe me; The textures are very simple as well! It was just a test to see how it would work. But I guess they are okay, as there is so many other things to work on, so Iīll leave them as they are.

jddog: Thank u for the energi boost.

JPCohet: Yeah, it is kind of enormous...thx pal.

Lelantos: Very glad you like it...VERY.

Thank you all for the kind words. Thats makes it worth the effort!!!

Iīll work on the alien ship for some days now, to make it better...see u.

12 December 2004, 02:20 PM
Oh, forgot one;

Versiden: Thank you, pretty amazing stuff you got yourself!

12 December 2004, 02:46 PM
cool:thumbsup: The model is very original, and I think functional. With this great texture it looks amazing!
Keep this level man:buttrock:

12 December 2004, 08:57 PM
Hi there Henrik!
Well, the design of Your last ship is quite good and original, sort of like bug of some kind. But the textures are to shiny, bit to much of metal :) Maybe try some organic a like material, that would give it something like bug look. Good luck!

12 December 2004, 12:42 PM (

Hi again

Now, this is my attempt to go back to the alien symbiosis again. Have added tons of details, and improved the alien skin. Iīm much more satisfied with this attempt, hope you are as well...?

And kaksht; you are so right about my last submission, hope this works better.

See u

btw, will be offline this weekend, but hope to have something monday.

12 December 2004, 01:16 PM
I like your organic alien design better than the mechanical version - definetly coming along nicely!
Really looking forward to seeing the spaceships together - right now I get the impression that the alien ones are somewhat smaller but that could just be me :)

Hled og lykke med det!

12 December 2004, 01:34 PM
I like a lot the last version of the alien ship!Goof job!

12 December 2004, 06:25 PM (

Well, I said I wouldnīt be online this weekend, but I couldnīt.

Have worked some more on detailling the alien ship, tried to make some attachment from the alien plates to the middle area. Also added some other details....damn, so much work in this one...havenīt even started working on the legs!-And the engine is still just two cylinders.
well, hope itīs getting better...

12 December 2004, 06:38 PM
btw, thx for the kind comments...

Overchord: Are you a danish guy or do you just pretend? Og hvis du er, så selv held og lykke, og tak for de rosende ord.:)

12 December 2004, 06:39 PM
That most recent ship is great. REally different, and very detailed. Your entry is really coming along.

12 December 2004, 07:03 PM
Wow. There is such rough competition here! That alien ship is fantastic, and very original.

12 December 2004, 03:00 PM
Man your alien ship looks ace so far!

12 December 2004, 03:08 PM
those are pretty cool designs u got there , especially the alien ship and the fighter.
I also liked the flag design and the moon story , but you're not going with that anymore ?

12 December 2004, 03:44 PM
Thx terraarc and Squibbit for the kind comments.

The concept is the same; One moon, one earth in background, a lot of astroids around the moon, a big crator in the moon (as "userbrian" suggested), a big city/colony on one of the astroids, some spaceships.

Only thing changed; the attacking force is alien, suggested by "arturro".

I will not work on the challenge for a week, as I will work on a callendar(2005) for a firm, to be used as a christmas present. I really donīt want to, but need the "money/stuff" soooooooo much (one of the thing theyīll pay me is a...ready...wacom drawing board, size A5 !!!. I need it so much in this challenge...but canīt afford it. So go, go, go.

Wish me luck:thumbsup:

12 December 2004, 08:35 PM
congratulations, this is awesome work. your human ships seem like something we would design and from my point of view they seem to be modelled with precision. from a modelling point of view, i can't critique anything, but from a futurists point of view, i have to ask about the utility of the receiver dish. it's wonderfully textured and stuff, but i wonder if it's not a little exposed (tactically speaking) for 100 years in the future. just a thought, but it would be a shame to loose it. so, actually, nix what i said and keep up the great work. i can't wait to see the finished comp...

12 December 2004, 12:14 PM
Hi phlebas9

You have a very good point there...also thought so after making it. Well, I donīt know, as I donīt have the time to carefully think about everything I make, I just thought it would be cool. And it looks so human, which was the original intention of making it. Also needed something to remove the symetrical feeling in the overall shape, but if I made a new attempt, Iīd probably make something more futuristic. But Iīm already so much behind schedule, so Iīll leave it at that.

I appriciate that kind of comments so much, thank you.

If others have some crits, Iīd appriciate to know:)

12 December 2004, 02:26 PM

That ship just keep getting better - keep up the good work man

Og ja jeg er dansker - ikke fake :)
Held og lykke - har ikke selv haft tid til at deltage i denne Challenge men haaber paa at finde tid til den naeste - omend jeg slet ikke naar dit niveau!

12 December 2004, 12:31 PM
very nice henrik. The tones the pallette the designs are very nice. The non symetrical look goes over excellently as well. Some real nice work here,I hope to see more all the time.Keep at this ,as your efforts are surely paying off.

12 December 2004, 09:07 AM (

Hi, back after 1 week of other work(1 week to make a complete picture challender, retouching 24 pictures, designing, layout etc....that was a tough one....)
Not much to say, worked on the legs. I not totally satisfied, shrimp look-a-like color and so....hmmm. Have shortend the front legs a lot, just couldnīt make them work, got too clumsy.
Also made the last connection between the middle area, and the alien plates.

Thanks for the critique and comments, I want more:)

12 December 2004, 09:35 AM
Hi there Henrik!
Nice update here! Front and side legs look much better now. Have one q: Is the armor in the front gonna float like that or is it gonna be attached to something?
Nice avatar change btw :)

12 December 2004, 09:50 AM
Hello there Kaksht! Welcome back! :)

The work on feet is looking great so far!
I'd suggest adding some joint between the leg parts, and the volume of the feet isn't quite obvious (maybe needs some "texture love" to fix that...) Coming to textures, the inside of the shrimp works fine! Maybe add some color variations, glows from lights inside....but not a strong suggestion on this one....
I think for the outer shell you should go with a more metalic look, stronger highlights in places, which I think would help on the volume of some areas (like I said above...:D Am I repeating here!?)...

Keep it up this way!!

12 December 2004, 09:54 AM
very very very nice design there! it is same as whale + leggs of bug :)
and the textures are very nice!

12 December 2004, 11:10 AM
Awesome models! I really like that alien ship - details looks great and the overall design is pretty unique. Looking forward to see more!

12 December 2004, 12:02 PM
excellent model
saw this from the gallery and it looked really interesting, good work dude

I would love to see more dents and tiny horns from the outer metal shell, but it's up to you..
keep it up

12 December 2004, 12:33 PM
Hi all

thx for the comments

Kaksht: No, the "armor" is going to be attached, havenīt figured out how to yet. Maybe Iīll skip them(?)

terraarc: Iīm not sure about the it is going to be a living thing....But maybe the aliens has attached some joints on the alien legs, to streghten them...Actually that would be nice I think, will work on that for sure.

markovicd: I hadnīt seen the whale, but you have a point, thank you very much anyway. As for the textures, they are pretty simple, just to test. I think the many details underneath is making them look more complex. But Iīm behind schedule and I think Iīll keep them, as people seems to like them...(?)

Gunilla: Thank you very much, was hoping for the uniqueness

Versiden: Thanks again, glad you like, great entry yourself

See you, am in a hurry

12 December 2004, 07:04 PM
wow great works here mate!!... amazing detail, texture and design... very neat and the contrast between the alien force and the earth force is very visible... i dont have anythign to crit... just keep up the good works!!

12 December 2004, 11:51 PM (

Well, I tried to make some texture work on the alien ship...Iīm not really sured this is good...(?). In some ways the test texture was more "cool", more scary in the old version. The new attempt is a little cartoonish. I just cant find time to keep working on this ship, have to move on...So here is a question: Should I just keep the test texture(old version), or does the new one has some qualities...What about the red light, maybe keep that...?...please help, as Iīm really confused here.

12 December 2004, 01:02 AM
I think that the "New Text." would be without that red light just .. GREAT! ;)

12 December 2004, 01:13 AM
nice ship, very original as said! the new texture almost makes the ship look like as if made from the shells of a gigantic creature. the old texture makes it look more like a ship . i dunno which is better , both are wow:thumbsup: .

12 December 2004, 05:32 AM
I like the new texture, to me the old texture looks too much like
a metal model. But I agree the red sash looks off. Maybe if it was
broken up somehow, modulations in light within, yellow to orange to red.

My 3d entry (

12 December 2004, 06:18 AM
I LOVE the look of your alien ship. The second version looks definitely better than the first one. However I feel that glowing tube feels too alone (it's the only glowing part on the ship).

BTW do we get to see another update on the fighter you posted on page 2? (or was it page 3???)

My entry ( :deal:

12 December 2004, 06:54 AM
Hi Henrik,

I think the Alien ship is really good looking, but I somehow prefer the minimalistic look of the old texture. Somehow it looks more evil. I would also drop the red glow. What about adding small parasite ships around the alien ship? Good luck, looks good anyway!

12 December 2004, 10:01 AM
Hi henrik.....................i think i liked the older version better......But........I also like the newer version in some ways......Possibly you could create 25% or so of the newer versions changes to the original......?A blend, getting the best of both Worlds? The red band is to glaring,it takes away from the rest, possibly a softer hue of some kind to depict as a color band......

Well anyways..................I like your work, looks nice, some real fine modeling and texturing, just some tweaks, but those are always around for us all......Go at it hard, all the best, looking nice for sure.....:arteest: :arteest:

12 December 2004, 10:06 AM
Nice going Kragh! The only thing that strikes me on the new text is the red lights....I think they dont fit with the rest texture....
Apart from that it's looking great :)

12 December 2004, 10:21 AM
I liked the old one too. Agree to previous posts about the red lights.
The thing about the red lights and the new textures is that they hide
much of the cool detail that is in contrast with the smooth exoskeleton.
The new texture seems so flat , seems like there's not as much detail
there as there was. Also , you could add some detail to the edges where
the exoskeleton plating joins the ship . I think even the white lights might
be too big , you could use smaller lights... also add a few lights on other
parts of the ship , not too much tho.Hmm... on the other hand that
one concentrated area of lights doesn't seem sucha bad idea...maybe give it
more look?
I did enoy the organic look of the limbs in the new pic, but I would have
kept the plating on the hull smooth , maybe use the pattern on the limbs
for added color.

12 December 2004, 10:31 AM
personally I prefer the old one, the textures on the outer plating works better I think.
The red light looks a bit out of place, maybe try a white light instead to match the other white lighting. Hope it helps

12 December 2004, 10:44 AM
Well, Iīm glad to get so many opions, sure helps alot.

So hereīs what I get out of it;

1) drop the red lights, or change color (I think Iīll drop them)
2)Both textures has people on their side. The funny thing about texturing is, that the quality doesnīt match the time you use at all. I have spend about 20 minutes on the old texture and 3 h. on the new...And I think I prefer the old.....damn!
I think Iīll take the old color of the alien plating, and add the bumps of the new. The metal of the old seems more used, but rust in space??? Needs oxigene to make that chemical reaction...
BUT WHO CARES(!!!), as long as it looks good...:)
................................what to do ???.............................................

Anyways, thank you very much for your opinions.

12 December 2004, 11:40 AM (

As I work with lots of image parts at the time (To be able to come back and watc some work with fresh eyes), hereīs some work with the moon and the crator. Please donīt say that the moon is too orange...I know from a realistic point of view, it is. But as my scene would become too black and white if I did it realistic, Iīve decided to strengthen some of the color tones. Our nearby neighbourhood in space, just is a little boring, no nebulas, no black holes, no galaxies(well ok, one), no supernovas(good for us!!!).
About the structure in the crator, I hope youīll get it. The image just isnīt big enough to show any details.

See you soon, and thx again for the replies!!!

12 December 2004, 01:08 PM
Hi there Henrik!
Man this image rocks dude! (and it really does, as i was reading Your post coment, The Prodigy - Climbatize was loading up :scream: ) Man this is awesome job of Yours! Great detail (altough as You said we cant see much of that) and the textures are really superb man! Are those buildings sticking out of the crator?

12 December 2004, 01:20 PM
The last image is looking great! Coloring is good too....Nice going mate!

12 December 2004, 01:53 PM
a very nice angle really shows the craters vastness:) . and the structure gives the illusion of a... i dunno mysterouse!!!.

just an after thought maybe u could spice up the terrain to make it look more rugged!

anyway the image rocks

12 December 2004, 02:31 PM
You've got a great sense of scale in that image. Looks great! As for the moon being too orange/brown, the lunar regolith is somewhat brown in color. Check out some unretouched NASA/Apollo photos.
Keep going!

12 December 2004, 02:35 PM
death star2 ? :)
really nice work that planet

12 December 2004, 03:53 PM
Man I don't know how i didn't notice your work... But it looks totaly awesome :). I love it... and one things for sure, i won't miss anything from now on :)... Keep it up!
BTW only one crit... on the alien ship the red glowing things don't really look that good... just a thought... Post soon

P.S. Moon is simply great :)

12 December 2004, 07:02 PM
Hi Kragh,

I love this crater with structure. It reminds me a bit of the death star in SW but of course your`s looks much better :D Maybe someone had the idea of digging there for minerals...

Oh by the way... do you know the film LEXX the darkzone?

12 December 2004, 01:02 AM
Thank you all for the comments. The crator was originally not my idea, but suggested by someone in here. And ofcourse it should have that...I mean, as the moon in the future has a saturn like ring surrounding it, it must have been a big size astroid hitting it. Making this giant crator. Why people have build these structures in it, I have no clue. Maybe because the crator made access to the deeper layers of the moon, with more rare minerals...but I donīt know, just thought it would look cool. That it would look a little like the death star, I had not planned. But cool enough, the death star is not the worst object to copy. If you had said it looked a little like a giant apple, with teeth marks, Iīd be sad.
But thank you. And yeah, I had actually not realized that the real moon isnīt just grey, but has a brown tone, thanks I have no doubts that this will be the final color tone for it.

What I need to do now is making the rest of the crators on the moon a little more real. My bump map is not good enough...

thank you guys, my motivation get a boost everytime I get an external reaction:)

12 December 2004, 01:09 AM
Btw, Iīm surprised no one is commenting the lightning difference between the moon and earth.
I made the light for the moon first, and when I added light for the earth from the same direction, it became just a rounded line, which made it impossible to see it was the earth.
I guess the outcome is more importend than the realism, hope you agree...

see you

12 December 2004, 06:10 AM
Man that is just too cool... The lighting doesn't really matter i feel. Since nobody has said anything it's probably just fine.

12 December 2004, 01:08 PM
Excellent Grand work man!:applause:
Hope to see the other stages!

12 December 2004, 03:26 PM
I LOVE that crater. It looks very familiar... maybe "the time machine"? :D
outsanding work

12 December 2004, 12:00 AM
The models in this thread are amazing, and that moon is crazy, would love to see a close-up. Can't ot see whats next.

12 December 2004, 11:44 AM
I cast my vote for the old textures on the ship. Your moon looks awesome--great sense of scale, and an implication of backstory--the structures make me wonder what happened here? was it a battle? is the moon really hollow, or manmade? good stuff.

12 December 2004, 12:35 PM
i'm for the new textures - seems darker and more metallic. Also bigger.

I want to see a flyin into the crater :)

12 December 2004, 12:11 AM
yeh, the crater is awesome, definitely grand!!

12 December 2004, 03:54 AM
You mentioned that there is no oxygen in space to create rust. But there are frozen
water, ice, molecules in some asteroids. And if a ship travels thru a bunch of these
in space, maybe the results are rust. The speed of travel could even accelerate the
chemical reaction and create a super rust. Huge pockmarked metal. In fact (the Italian wine
is writting, opera experiment no. 99) the lack of competing oxygen in space might have
a peculiar localization effect, where the rust would shoot thru the ship like a tunnel. Such
tunnels would increase the oxidation effect, progressively rusting out the rear sections of
the ship. The ship would become a giant rust eating (read oxygen eating) "whale" much
as giant earth whales eat tiny plankton or algae. OKAY, so now you KNOW i'm weird.

my 3d entry (

12 December 2004, 04:33 AM
maybe if during flight it melted all those frozen water elements... but still rust takes a long time to appear, it's not like you pour some water on a metal plate and next day you see rust

however this is a CGI contest not a chemestry class :buttrock:

12 December 2004, 04:52 AM
I was thinking the force of speed would create the localized crash heat on a molecular
level and accelerate the whole process. It does take time to happen. Traveling at the
speed of light would be necessary to avoid this. This involves an equation of the space
time continium. Time would be altered by distance and speed.Of course at the speed of
light no rust could occur. But below that time would definitely be altered. Actually in such a case time is reduced to such intense levels of nanoseconde that a ship could rust in the blink of an eye. Seen any aliens lately? Rust is actually only a very slow fire. Move something
faster thru oxygen and you have an accelerated rust, called fire. The end results of rust
and fire in the space time continum are identical.Time is only what you know and think
it is, it is all relative. Going beyound relativity illusions is the trick.Seeing true relativity is an art of the imagination. And very clear logic.Even Einstein could not distance himself relatively enough. Though he was really out there, in the Grand Space Opera you gotta think REALLY
BIG, relatively.

12 December 2004, 05:41 AM
 wow... anywayz what if they were using some kind of stainless steel :D

12 December 2004, 05:44 AM
You crack me up! Of all people you should know, if you go too fast you
burn in hell! LOL!
Combustion levels are irrelevant. You will be assimilated.
Stainless steel would also rust, in a space time continum you would
never live to see.
Stainless steel contains carbon, which is harder to ignite than wood.
Now does this mean less is more?
So we enter into the realm of black holes, I see...
Of course less is more, not in volume, but in density.
I am about to finish my bottle of Italian white wine, Bella Sera,
and Grand Space Opera experiment no.99 may come to an end... but it
has been exciting and positive to me, you are all a great bunch. I should get
to modeling!
See you later!
Returning control of your monitor to Kragh.

12 December 2004, 06:22 AM
Henrik, great job, your efforts are worth their price. Keep it up!

12 December 2004, 11:43 AM
Well, feel free to discuss anything, specially when itīs as exiting as that. I want to add something. Ofcource you can imagine some kind of rust creating chemical reaction in space. I donīt think water from astroids could make it as the water here is without oxygen. Yeah, I know that water molecules contain oxygen, but they ar hooked up on hydrogen, and will not(I think...(?)) make chemical reactions with the metal.
As for light speed speculations and "super" rust(:)), I have no comments. No one is able to say that couldnīt happen anyway. But you are crazy (userbrian), but I like it. Thank you for writting wierd, but interesting stuff in here, most refreshing:). And thanks nemirc for keeping him going. Thank you all for your kind comments. I will not be working in the christmas holyday, need to spend all my time with my daughter and my ex-girlfriend(her mom...). Think it could make me come back with totally new eyes, to review my work.
I will still check the forum, and other entries, including my own, so Iīll not be totally gone...

Thanks, and merry christmas.

12 December 2004, 02:35 AM (

Found an hour to work on the fragments, still streching in uvw, but just to test. Sun added in photoshop, to test.

Merry christmas to all of you

12 December 2004, 03:01 AM

12 December 2004, 02:32 PM
Hi Kragh,

what is this in front of your crater? A moon? A asteroid? A plug for the crater ;)

12 December 2004, 12:56 AM
The comp looks great so far....I like the open space on the right side....

Always here watching! :wavey:

Merry Christmas and nice holidays (if working days are really off, this year' really blew holidays!!) mate!

12 December 2004, 07:54 AM
Hi Kragh,

what is this in front of your crater? A moon? A asteroid? A plug for the crater ;)
I was wondering the same thing...
maybe a debris from a previous battle that destroyed the other half of the moon?

12 December 2004, 12:51 AM

Seems I wasnīt clear enough:

Those are fragments from the original astroid impact to the moon(which created this massive crator!) Iīll have to work alot more with them, just not clear enough that they are populated(the fragments). Also a lot more fragments will come, ending up creating some sort of saturn ring around the moon. Have to figure out a way to make a blend between geomtry and some kind of map, to make this effect. Just donīt think my computer can deal with a geometry based saturn ring...:)

Thx for the comments, means alot

12 December 2004, 12:52 AM
Btw. Good night, really need to sleep now!!!

12 December 2004, 01:12 AM
now it is perfectly clear

Have you thought of using the LOD of the geometry based on the distance from camera? high rez for close ones and lowrez for far ones... you could even use 2D cards  . Just an idea

12 December 2004, 01:16 AM
Still needs too many objects, to make a complete ring, I mean, we are talking millions, to make something that looks as closed(untransparent) as the saturn ring. But Iīll figure out a way, I always do....:)

12 December 2004, 02:12 AM
You could always add a ring in photoshop after you render out everything; saves you from rendering out millions of goemetry to make a silly ol' ring:shrug: .

12 December 2004, 07:37 AM
Hi Kragh,

think you just got the same problem I had with my image. The answer to this is your final comp. wich more or less gives you a hint where to put detail in and where not. :wise:
Sound wise... hehehe... but seriously for sure it will work with a nice map and some bigger modeled rocks in the foreground. Maybe you even could add some particel system for the fine tuning. Besides... where are your updates!!!

12 December 2004, 08:06 AM
maybe u could try sprite based astroid particles at the background and instanced geometry at the front :)!

but its looking good !

12 December 2004, 08:46 AM
oh and havent seen ur ships for a while :)!

12 December 2004, 10:55 AM
Have a happy safe and extreme new year eh! Hehe. Best wishes for the new year.

12 December 2004, 03:30 PM
hi Kragh just dropping by to say ...

:) A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR ----- :bounce:

12 December 2004, 08:27 PM
Happy new years kragh, hope you have enough fun to look like you do in your avatar this new years:scream: .

01 January 2005, 10:55 PM
Wishing the best on the year that just popped in and on your work too!!

01 January 2005, 02:06 AM
Hi all

Iīm soaked in blood at the moment...luckly not my own, but a friend of mines. He was hit by a bottle, while just talking with some others. From BEHIND. What the hell is wrong with people. Well, Iīve spend the whole day at the place where the party was held, and have just arrived to my own home. So havenīt had a chance to change cloths yet. Man I look and feel like shit. hehe.
(Should mention, that my friend is now allright, just had to get some stiches at the e.r.)

Thanks for comments and crits, and to ace4016; If I had been wearing sunglasses at the party, Iīd probably been looking very much like my avatar. But my eyes matched the ones shown pretty much:beer:

I might give up on the challenge, havenīt desided yet. But it begins to feel impossible to make the remaining work, with the amount of work I have to do else where in january. If it should be the case, I hope to see you in some other challenge or similar, I just love this place.

See you all

01 January 2005, 03:14 AM
Well considering what you just went through it's not a surprise you feel like giving up! But I think you've got some great work here. Maybe you could take a break and continue it later when you're feeling better. Don't worry about the challenge, we're here to improve!

Have a Happy New Year! :buttrock:

01 January 2005, 05:02 PM
hi there Kragh sorry to here that, hope there ul are fine. hmm... if ur taking a break maybe u could still drop by to comment us! it helps a lot !

01 January 2005, 07:56 PM
Hey, sounds like you had a great time (maytbe except for the part where ur friend got hit over the head), glad you enjoyed this new years. Its always good to take a break from big projetcs, its no big deal if you dont finish the challenge, there will always be a next time.

01 January 2005, 08:14 PM
hi kragh ! hows the rendering coming! :)

01 January 2005, 08:22 PM
Ouch - sounds like you have had a tough start on the new year! Hope the rest will be better and that you find time to complete the challenge... you have made such good work that it would be sad to not finish it. Take some sleep and get back some energy - good luck:wavey:

01 January 2005, 12:50 AM (

Working on the mothership texture, man that is hard. Well, tried to put it together with a render of my moon, to check if they fit together. This image has nothing to do with my final composition. Hope to get some comments.

See u all

01 January 2005, 01:13 AM
finaly :)! hmm thats one big ship. yeah i can see it needs work specialy if u plan for a close up. looks like a carrier ship nice.hope to see more details soon anyway take it easy hope im not disturbing u too much!:)

hey im off now gotta get some shut eye was up even last night to help build the tsunami website of maldives. and there are some net bandwith problems here.

and thanks for ur comments !

01 January 2005, 07:06 PM
hi Kragh! hows things going for u? good i hope:)

01 January 2005, 07:13 PM
No, not really. Things wont work as I want them to. Also having a har time finding a composition, and even the ratio for my image...Book cover format, or widescreen...hmmm, really donīt have a clue. But thx form concerning.

Hope you are doing better(?). I think you have something right in that landscape, you submitted yesterday.

See u

01 January 2005, 10:55 PM
Hi Kragh,

glad you did not give up the run :bounce: Your mothership looks really promising. It only needs a nice light map and you could enhance the detail factor a lot...

01 January 2005, 11:29 PM (

Please read the following:
This is just some single renders, tried to make a collage in PS, to find some sort of comp. Thats why the light on the objects donīt match the sun position. I really have a hard time trying to figure out a way to position these objects, to make some sort of sense.....a little clumsy in this attempt, hopefully Iīll get there.

See you all

01 January 2005, 11:40 PM
hi Kragh

i think u can make the view wider that way so u can show more of the mother ship and a lot of action :)! just a suggestion! hey btw whats at the bottom of the image ? i meteor close up?
you will get there dont worry :bounce:!

01 January 2005, 11:45 PM
Maybe making it wider...hmmmm....not a bad idea, think Iīm have been kinda stuck to the 16:9 widescreen format. Maybe would help me a lot avoiding this crouded composition. Still needs the fighters also. The front human mothership(the one seen from behind), will be motionblurred a lot, cause it will be a fly by in one of the fighters. also, more carriers will be added. And more astroids, to make the ring around the, where to put all that stuff???

01 January 2005, 11:48 PM
The thing below, is the city I submitted a long time ago. There will be mauntains behind it, as it is supposed to be in an astroid crator...

01 January 2005, 11:59 PM
oh i think missed that ! sorry! then how about making the moon a little far out into the scene this can also give u space! i think now the moon is too close now ! :) since the final render will be huge i dont think ull miss any details :)! what do u think?

01 January 2005, 12:08 AM
Well, I think it wil be better when the perspective and all, matches the different objects. As the aliens is supposed to be attacking this city, it needs to be below the action...but Iīll think about it, maybe I should change a lot to make this work.

01 January 2005, 12:35 AM
Well, I think it wil be better when the perspective and all, matches the different objects. i think ur right! btw dont try too hard just relax :)!

01 January 2005, 12:53 AM
first there are atolls ! click [kaafu Atoll]- North , another map will come. at the bottom there is a red dot called male :)! the island only about 1.5 kilometers in diameter! and also the capital.

01 January 2005, 07:05 AM
damn goooooood welldone:thumbsup:

01 January 2005, 12:02 AM

I canīt do this, have to surrender. Too much other work. But has been very funny, and learned a lot! Hope to see you all in another challenge some time.

Thanks for crits, comments and concerns (c&c&c), has been great.

01 January 2005, 12:08 AM
come on! at least try! see how much work I have to be done before the end:) we have to fight. And your work is very promising, and one of the best on this chellange!

01 January 2005, 12:20 AM
oh u know its very sad ! like arturro i agree completely!! but yeah with lot of work its going to be difficult for u , i understand!:) but still u can do what the time gives ! i dont know whether even ill also finish but ur crits and comments have been a driving force for me and i know a lot of others in this challenge!

hehehe just changed the avater , just for the fun of it:)!

01 January 2005, 12:55 AM
come on! at least try! see how much work I have to be done before the end:) we have to fight. And your work is very promising, and one of the best on this chellange!
I second this one... I am only halfway there but I won't give up. I will post a final image even if it's only half the image it was intended to be :D

01 January 2005, 01:19 AM
Iīm so happy for those last posts. You have no idea how much I want to do this. But as a freelance worker in databasestructures and graphics, I just have to work when work is offered me. Have just been hired to make fake vacation houses, you know, houses that has not been build yet, but need to show in a "Vacation houses for rent" catalog/brochure. And itīs really a borring job, building an almost photorealistic house. Not exactly what I want to do in 3D, making doors, windows...building walls and making roofs. I want to make aliensships right now, but need the money so much. So, nope canīt do. And even if I just submitted what I have now, I still need to work out lights for the different objects, and make some kind of engine work, as this fight just isnīt that hot, if the ships are just watching each other, not moving at all. And thereīs no way Iīm submitting a static kind of image as my latest submission. Then Iīll rather call it a day, and wait for the next challenge. But thanks a lot for your words, no time wasted, when such words came out of it!

Thank you

01 January 2005, 02:52 AM
Well at least you have a job :deal:
There's no question that $$$ is very useful and you have to take a job when they offer one to you.

Well, at least I hope we will see this one finished in a near future, even if it's just for fun.:buttrock:

01 January 2005, 03:07 AM
hey man...youre doing a great job!

01 January 2005, 10:12 AM
wow, I love the detail.
I am sure you will work out the comp.
I am still messing with mine too.

01 January 2005, 04:34 PM
CAN't stop my fantasy!!!. and I love your detail.

01 January 2005, 07:32 PM
Things happen mate! It's a dynamic world and everything is mixed with everything.....

Your work so far is impressive and grande enough....I wish you'll find some time mixing a final image on time!:)

01 January 2005, 07:43 PM
I also have to draw boring houses for my employer! 5 days a week, crazy, but the money...
But i`m still trying to finish it.

01 January 2005, 05:22 AM
Man I am happy for you and sad for us.. Your entry was top notch, and I was really looking forward to the finished product. Hey do us a favor if you absolutely cannot finish it now, then please, please, post it up in the gallery section when you are done. I wanna see it!

01 January 2005, 12:02 PM
henrik...............I second what Richard mentioned........Take it into the WIP section, get this done as you had hoped. There is some fine work here, and it deserves this justice.......PM me if you do so.I would like to support you there.I like what you have, and the potential of it would be nice to see come to fruition.......Best to you,and good luck in all you do........:arteest:

01 January 2005, 01:28 PM
Thank you all for this strong support. I appriciate it very much. Iīs so sad for me too, DMW(Richard), really wanted this to finish.

But Iīll be back in the next challenge, I almost promise. I have really enjoyed being a part of this community, so many skilled and great individuals in here, have learned so much, just by watching.

Again, thank u, see u all.
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

01 January 2005, 09:14 PM
bravo nice pice of gso:thumbsup:

01 January 2005, 09:48 PM
Hi Kragh

looks nice your comp. One thing only: maybe you could think of rotating this big rock besides this moon on the z-axis so the viewer would not only look on the cut off side but would see also a bit of the rock structure behind. I also would place your big mothership into the mid plane. Where it is now I thought it was something new like a space station. I didn`t realized that it was a space ship.

But Kragh! Keep going it already looks cool just some more view tweaks

01 January 2005, 03:47 AM
As you said..
"And even if I just submitted what I have now, I still need to work out lights for the different objects, and make some kind of engine work, as this fight just isnīt that hot, if the ships are just watching each other, not moving at all. And thereīs no way Iīm submitting a static kind of image as my latest submission. Then Iīll rather call it a day, and wait for the next challenge."
Wow! Very inspiring latest post was what I thought my final would be too, but now I have to add some engine glows to both the Opera ship and the Space Fokker, but i'll just paint them in photoshop in post...If you can make
me keep on going, you can make yourself! But if not, thanks for your crits and a fun time. This has been an experience I will never forget. Oh, I won't get my fires in...but se la vie.
Yes, hope to see this as a wip then! Looks intriguing, wonder how this spelling will look tomorrow? My new years resolution is to think way more about my paying work!

my 3d gso entry (

01 January 2005, 05:06 PM
To bad you have to stop this - but good luck in completion later. This will definitely be worth waiting for :wavey:

01 January 2005, 08:33 AM
Yeah like Michael said man let us know if you need anything to finish this!

01 January 2005, 01:55 PM

Man agree with Richard and Michael....take this to WIP and finish it! It's a pity not incorporating a final for some little adjustments....and all this work you've done? Keep it up deadlines this time!! :bounce:

Motivation ps: I'll try to finish mine too!!
