i defiantly want to try to create an image that encompasses the whole scope of space opera. From the lowest peasant digging up artifacts in the mud to the huge scale battles taking place which will decide how that peasant lives his life.
So I thought an image, a thin tall image. The very bottom has that peasant digging up artifacts through right at the top the epic battles. In between shows the civilization. the streets, city, landscape, sky, atmosphere (buildings penetrating the cloud layer into space) and space. But not just that. The person digging in the mud has found a bowl with a symbol on. I want that same symbol to appear on the space craft at the top. To show its all linked. They have history and even though the pilot and the peasant have never met. They are all connected.
I also like the idea of planets of various sizes. May be even a planet the size of a football in a street. And how that planet effects the street it is above. The quote 'size matters not' is really inspiring me at the moment.
This is an exciting project. I dont really know were im going tbh.

On the left is what shape im after, a long thin image.
The main image I wanted to show here is on the right. A street scene, with some sort of structure holding a planet. Another planet is orbiting it. These two worlds are having a space battle all of there own. A small thing in a grand scope. A young person, peasant is picking up a broken bottle that is imbedded in the structure holding up the planet. On the bottle is a symbol. The symbol will be on the space craft at the top of the scene and is seen on the planet as an island chain. All connected.
I really want to get a history behind my image.

Edit - I had to edit this post because the version I uploaded to cgtalk was way way! to big. Could a mod please upload this image ive put on my personal web space as a concept entry for this comp? I dont know how to edit an image ive already uploaded.
I find it really hard to get my ideas down on paper so that others can understand them. I hope I wont be punished because my concepts arenít works of art all on there own. I think im going to start making stuff in 3D now. Hopefully over time my idea will become more apparent. Ive tried to do a kind of collage here of basic 3d models, Photoshop drawing, hand drawn etc just trying to get it all down. I donít think ive succeeded very well :) Ill give it another go once ive started to get some 3d work together.
Anyway it starts at the bottom. A person is holding in his hand a world, orb that is letting off light making a kind of holographic map. That world hes holding in his hands is in itself having a battle with another small world in the image. Behind him ive got the archeology site were artifacts are dug up. People repairing monuments in the heat of a battle and troops running through war torn streets. Further up is the cityscape. With huge buildings. Some that penetrate the atmosphere into space. Fighters patrol the skys. Right at the top a 'Planet birther' is creating new worlds whilst under attack from ships in a space battle. I really want the epic but always thereís the individual as well.

These are two of the hand draw parts. Again not very good but for me they get across what Iím after. The Planet Birther on the left I really like, I love the idea of a ship that creates planets. The huge 'net' at the back which releases the bodies. The skyscraper on the right. I like the suspended circular sections.

I really like the planet birther. I think it's a great concept. Imagine the species that can create whole new planets! Apart from those in HitchHiker's Guide of course :)
I hope you'll keep with the planetbirther, it has a great potential and is very different from what most of us are making. Great creativity.
Keep emīcoming and good luck with the challange

Just started to model the planet / orb which is being held at the bottom of the image. I really want to make this look like an old pocket watch.

interesting concept... make many, many little light bulbs in the city :D

Last night in bed I think Iíve come up with a better idea. I wanted to make it more fun. So image a huge battle. With a large army running down to a building with space ships in the sky.. all hell breaking loose. Typical star war really.
Now the same scene but after the battle has ended. A women sitting on the broken shell of a tank reading a book. Two children playing with model shape ships running down the same valley the arm was.
So I thought I could do a sort of montage. The after image would be prominent but have faded patches of the war torn image/battle on top. So the women sitting on the tank. The tank would be 90% derelict but you would see the gun firing.. you get that sense that sheís remembering the battle by seeing faded memories.
Another example. In the war torn scene, there would be a central marine holding the world orb (still like that idea) showing a galaxy map in holo form. In the after image. You might see a faded version of that marine but also the broken orb lieing on the ground.
Im still going to have the planet birther in the sky though :)
What do you think ?

I thought your first idea was good also, but this new one has potential too. After reading your description I got the image of a gradient fade from left to right, with the war going on on the left and the woman and children on the right. The war is clear on the left but fades the more to the right you get. The same for the woman and kids but opposite, right to left.
just my vizualisation, though.
Generally though, a lot of guys are doing spacebattles, I was going to do one too, so if you're going for originality, you might want to reconsider the war scene and just go for the aftermatch scene.
Yet another scene could be the woman reading the book, like your idea, but have a clear destinction between the warscene and the peacescene, so it will be clear that it is the woman remebering the past.
Like what your're developing here. Keep it up!

nice work, looking foward to seeing more modeling. Good luck
10 October 2004, 05:25 PM
Thanks for the reply zem. Yeah I really wanted to focus more on the women/children and book remembering there ancestors long ago who faught on that ground. I definatly dont just want another war scene.
Really helpful reply.
Ive started to model the scene but at the moment ive gone home for a week/2 from uni so I cant post any images. I will when I get back.
10 October 2004, 05:53 PM
Yes I know this is utterly terrible but Iíve gone home for the week with no scanner, Photoshop, zip :( So this was taken with a digital camera, in a room at night.
Anyway I thought id get something online to get feedback. This is mainly just some playing around really. I want to do something different and this came to mind.
I am so busy at the moment with university that Iím wondering whether I will get this entry finished in time, fingers crossed that I do. I really really want to!
Anyway the bottom part is a planet of some kind, water planet maybe. It is still in the palm of someoneís hand, that small. Surround it is some kind of smokey, mage like object I suppose. The main part is the bubbles floating upwards. I was thinking inside each bubble could be a still from one Myth, one Legend from this civilizations history. The cool part is maybe if the bubbles collide, whatever is inside each bubble starts to fight whatís inside the other bubble until they float apart. I thought that was quite cool. It also allows me to show some history to go with whatever the rest of the image will be.

Ok ok, i know i really need to get something posted here image wise but im getting to that :)
Ive just been to see Finding Neverland.. totally stunning film it was! Anyway it got me thinking. I still like my idea of a women, book, children memories scene with fade in's of the past battle. But how about all that on a play stage. Imagine the scene. In the forground you have a play theatre with 1 person sitting with his feet up watching this play.
On stage you would have the scene ive described further up in my thread but as a play being acted out. People wearing cardboard spaceships around there chests. A person in black holding up a sphere pretending its a world and hes not really there etc etc.
I lov this idea! it gets across the space opera but also in my mind gets across history and culture because of what the scene is. You make the scene as epic and universe as you want it to be. Its your imagination.
Please give me some feedback. What do you think ??
10 October 2004, 01:05 PM
Well ive started to model the theatre. Made a start on the chairs and started to think how many rows I need/look good. Im going to try to really push on with the modeling now.
10 October 2004, 01:24 PM
You have several different types of scenes in your imagery. How do you plan to combine them all together?
10 October 2004, 02:03 PM
Heres the start of the stage. I really want a victorian look to the stage, I suppose to everything really. With a futuristic, civilisation play being acted out on the stage. Behind it space and beyond.
10 October 2004, 02:09 PM
Well I plan to have the play house at the bottom of the screen. With 1 person watching this play being acted out. The play itself will be the previous image I wanted to make. The old city warn and torn from battle. A women sitting reading a book whilst children play on the street remembering the battle that took place. There will also be fade ins, flashs in the scene of the battle that took place. Read up were ive described it better.
That scene is what is being acted out on the stage. With projections, light pannels and backdrop paintings showing the two scenes merged together.
As the scene goes up, I want the play house to stop and open out. As you go up you see space, planets and shape ships. You think these are all part of the illusion created in the play house, and indeed they could be. But they are infact a view of space behind the play house. I could even include the planet birther in there.
I hope thats made it more clear.
I need to get a drawing of all this to describe it better. Concept drawing, not my strong point :(

I really enjoy doing things like this. Get really basic models, a camera and start playing around with the composition. I think Iím getting to how I want this image to be arranged. Not quite there yet. Iíve got in my head a feel for this image I want to get across, I really want people to have to look hard to decide whatís real (i.e. in space) and whatís on the play stage.
A good example would be the guy holding up the world. I think is got a lot of depth that small part. You first think itís a planet, then you notice the poor guy holding it up and realize itís a prop. Itís got a historical quality, itís got a power quality. This person is holding up the world, he owns this world. He can crush it in one fell swoop, if it was real of course. But its not, itís only a prop on a stage. Thatís the feel I want, each part to both be huge, magnificent... but at the same time just a prop on a stage.
It will be a challenge. I might be going off on one here but Iím really really enjoying this :)
10 October 2004, 06:24 PM
Still playing with the composition. Ive decided to give the image more height. I also needed some structure to top off the building so ive added something in. I also like the idea of part circle ships in such a position in space that it they look like moon rises over the planet in front. Ive sneaked that in half way up the image.
I cant decide whether the lonely person sitting in the audience should be a gentleman in a top hat. Or a classic 1960's space man. Either way hes going to be in silhouette.
I can definalty get my images structured better in 3D than I can on paper, it allows me to see it in all possible places and angles.

I decided I wanted more space themes in my play. So ive decided to borrow an idea from Musical Stage Shows.
Im going to have a person in black, pushing a cycle across the stage. The cycle has wheels, moving parts all covered in shape ships (ship design hasnt been decided upon yet). These ships move, and sway with the pushing of the cycle across the stage.
I think i will also have people dressed up in planet cities etc, moving and dancing across the stage.
