View Full Version : Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Roshan Lohani

10 October 2004, 01:52 PM
Roshan Lohani has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

10 October 2004, 06:44 PM (

Far away in a galaxy there is a city named "Kohan". People in this city have seen lot of good days,It is a progressive city. Recently Scientists have created a new invention, an -"Electricity Power generator". This generator has been created so that good amount of electric supply can be provided to the people. Lifestyle is too much artificial, almost everything is dependent on electricity so electric supply is of great importance for the
people living in Kohan.
But no one knows how the hell aliens know about this generator and here they are, A huge number of alien- fighter space ships have attacked the city. Their main target is the generator and they have already started destroying it.

Well this is the concept. What I am going to generate is the City, Electricity generator and the alien fighter ships and also some special fx to show the destruction.

Forgive me for my bad sketching, my sketching sucks but it will give you the basic idea about how the scene will look.

10 October 2004, 06:48 PM (

Sketch of the generator.

10 October 2004, 06:50 PM (

Alien ship sketch.

10 October 2004, 06:54 PM
Good concepts and story too!! But how the hell did the aliens found out about the power generator?!

10 October 2004, 07:03 PM (

Another concept for alien ship.

10 October 2004, 07:05 PM
Lets pretend, these Aliens are quiet advanced.:)

10 October 2004, 07:38 PM
Welcome and good luck! :bounce:

Interesting concept, show more pictures but this time, try to paint the whole scene that you want to create, this way I can visualice more your idea

10 October 2004, 07:50 PM
Hi Arsa, thanks for thr reply. Some how I fear If I start painting I wont be able to compelete
this challenge, I am too rookie for painting. But anyways you will get an idea when I actually
start generating the scene in 3d.:)
Once again thanx for replying.

10 October 2004, 07:53 PM
Sorry for the misunderstood, when I typed "paint" I wasnt talking about painting as in colors, it is more like "create-draw-ilustrate" the scene, with some more details :D

For example I want to know more about the way the city actually will look in the final piece, like where will be the fire, the aliens, the ships, etc :D

10 October 2004, 07:54 PM
great concept!

good luck!

10 October 2004, 08:34 PM (

Well some quick work in photoshop, I think this will give an idea about the
final scene.

10 October 2004, 08:54 PM
Hi there, looks like a nice concept and I like your ships. Is your focus the generator or the ships? My only real comment is that I feel the composition is a little stiff/flat. Maybe if you variate the skyline of your BG buildings so some are in front and some a pushed behind they would create some more depth. Let your copsition breath. I just thought it might help push the eye to a focal point. Maybe use them compositionally as framework to guide the viewers eye to your focus. Hope this is helpful in some way. I really dig the idea. Best of luck.

10 October 2004, 09:03 PM
Well my main focus is the generator. I feel I must now start modeling the city.

10 October 2004, 09:27 PM
Hi Roshan....................Nice to see you going for another of these challenges.:arteest:

Your ideas/concept is quite dynamic. It has tha makings of a grand battle/conflict.........

eahartz.......brings up some very good points......I too think that once you are into 3D modeling of this set piece you should give a nice variety to the skyline,by arranging your buildings in a more nonsymetrical way.BG bldg's behind even more BG bldgs....Otherwise it could appear to be too much of a wall..................this will give more depth.........
It looks like you got quite the plan, and I wish you the best, now better get to it,we only got 13 more weeks or so.............All the best to you..........

10 October 2004, 09:39 PM

...i agree ...Virtuoso is right ...this way also u will have more freedom in your camera place when it comes to final composition....oh...and about the Aliens ..they came 'cuase i told them... :scream:

10 October 2004, 11:16 PM
DimitrisLiatsos, Virtuoso thanx for the replies. Now I am fully inspired and I have already started
modeling the city.:)
Best of luck to both of you too.

10 October 2004, 11:57 PM
Great! now I can sugest something :D

Add a sky to the composition, where you can place the mothership :D

10 October 2004, 06:28 AM
Very intense so far so good.. Good to see local challenger participating 'all the best' fellow indian... (

10 October 2004, 01:53 PM (

Ok I have started modeling the city.
The generator will be connected to this portion.

10 October 2004, 01:56 PM (

I have modeled some buildings to populate
the scene.

10 October 2004, 02:02 PM
This is not a contest of speed modeling ! :)
Nice, I will go back there later !

10 October 2004, 02:12 PM
Hi gpepper, I know I am going too fast, But the deadline is also little short.:)

10 October 2004, 02:52 PM
yust 90 days left! lol :p
anyway keep it up, the models look cool so far :)

10 October 2004, 03:06 PM
no no no .. too fast.. let the rest of us catch up ;p

too cool man.

one crit.. the buildings in the background are almost all the same height. Maybe make one the tallest building to make it stand out and add to variety.

I agree on the deadline tho.. 3 months isn't enough ;(

10 October 2004, 03:10 PM
it can easily be done in three months, yust forget school and work. they're useless anyway ;)

10 October 2004, 08:51 PM
very nice start

10 October 2004, 09:54 PM
Lookin good. Nice amount of detail so far.

10 October 2004, 10:05 PM
ok... where is the fire :)))
nice nice and nice

10 October 2004, 10:09 PM
Like they said, a very nice start. The building in the left foreground looks close to finished, making the others look bad in comparison :D Take it easy on the speed modeling though

10 October 2004, 11:00 PM
Yeah slow man...and just one thing that strikes me is that angled S pavement...couldn't that be just a curve ? :bounce:

10 October 2004, 11:27 PM
Yeah!! Very nice start dude!!

10 October 2004, 07:15 AM
Versiden: Thanx for the reply, You are right the buildings are of almost same height and also
because of this the city is looking flat, I will fix it.

PreatORiAn, arlutik, WyattHarris, markovicd, JamesMK, pBarrelas and DimitrisLiatsos thanx for
the replies.
Now I think I must slow down.:)

10 October 2004, 07:26 AM
The result you are aiming for promises a bunch of details.
Keep on the good work.

10 October 2004, 07:56 AM
Hi Therion, thanx for the reply. I am doing my best to add more details in my scene.:)

10 October 2004, 08:13 AM
detail + light here will make brutal combination :D
keep them coming

10 October 2004, 10:01 AM
Hi Roshan, wowow you're Žreally fast - Respect, man!:applause:

Hey, I like your concept. I really can imagine the scene, yuu have described it very good and
your sketches underlined your statements. I'm looking forward to see the generator (u know I love this style:D )...I wish u a ll the best... cya

10 October 2004, 11:50 AM (

I have modeled the generator with wires.
Now again back to the city, I am trying to add more details and variation in the

10 October 2004, 12:22 PM
I just wanted to know, whether the thick wire on top is looking bad, because it is little more
thick on one side, I mean the starting point of the wire, from generator to the building.
Should I add connectors so that I also get a chance to add more detail.

10 October 2004, 01:42 PM
I just wanted to know, whether the thick wire on top is looking bad, because it is little more
Didn't strike me as odd at all... What you need to look out for here is scale, I think. Those big tubes/wires sort of makes the whole object look smaller somehow, so the way you texture that generator will be crucial to maintain the feeling that it is indeed a very large structure.

10 October 2004, 01:47 PM
Looking good man! Wow you really going for the 3D really fast :)

I like the way you are picturing the conflict. I'm looking forward to see how are you going to develope the figh :D

- cheers!

10 October 2004, 01:48 PM
Very nice modeling, i like the city!

and yes, for me, i think that the generator must have more details.

10 October 2004, 04:35 PM
what about adding some more cables, plugs, gears...

10 October 2004, 06:27 AM
JamesMK, ARSA, SuperXCM, thanx for the replies.:)
I like your suggestions adding more cables will be really cool, the generator will look more
detailed and complex.

10 October 2004, 06:45 AM
hey madshooter, nice progress man... i loveed ur previous models and the power generators looks really awesome... keep is up... i'll b waiting for updates

Gluteus Maximus
10 October 2004, 06:50 AM
:)I love the look of those generators, especially the wires, I'm not exactly sure what it about them, but I do really like em! :)

10 October 2004, 08:20 AM
3doid and Gluteus Maximus, thanx for the replies. I am glad to know that you like the
Concept and my 3dwork.:)

10 October 2004, 08:26 AM
hey Madshooter.......................Slow down young man, your making the rest of us have to speed up.......................Looking good, nice start and nice overall compo thus far.Details, and more details, now stop reading this, and give even more details..............:wip:

10 October 2004, 11:53 AM
You know what, I think you could add some antenas, antenas with light bulbs, you know, so flying sousers do not crash with it :D

10 October 2004, 07:25 AM (

Ok I have added some more wires to the
generator. Later I will be adding some
electricfx on the wires, which has got cut due to alienship attacks.

10 October 2004, 07:27 AM (

I have attached the generator to the building. Let me know how it looks.

10 October 2004, 08:50 AM

I like the copper wires sticking out, I think make the wires hang a bit more, to give the feeling of gravity/weight.. what do u think?

besides that, the details are coming along nicely...

10 October 2004, 09:00 AM
your sketches really gives me hope
ivŽe just seen DimitrisLiatsos
sketches and thought i here lost under professsionals
syour idea of visualising electricity can be very intressting
excpaccially that everything depends on that one reactor
iŽm asking hown does it change a civilisation if electricity is the eternal force?
how would they look like ?

10 October 2004, 09:25 AM
Hello there. Going really fast there! I like your idea and progress so far. I agree that you should add a lot more detail to the reactor to make it look massive and enormous!! That would add a lot to the buildings' proportions too I believe. Keep it up!

10 October 2004, 09:52 AM
Great effort, Roshan! Maybe one suggestion: I would prefer much more watchable, thinner cables involved than one thick cable going outside the generator. The impression of hugeness is a bit to less for my taste, 'cause such thick cables wouldn't hang like a small one in our kitchen:rolleyes: I've got the feeling to look inside a technical device with a microscope.

...but lets go to the compliments ;-))) The perspective is absolut great- very nice focus!
...maybe some depth of field in the final?...and your progress is amazing. I'm a little bit envious about your speed, man!!

Keep it up, dude! This is coming along very cool!!!

10 October 2004, 10:12 AM (

I have improved the city by adding variations, now there are big and small buildings.

10 October 2004, 10:40 AM
It's pretty cool Roshan, but in my opinion, you should make the background buildings defer between them. They look like they were projected by the same architect....:)

10 October 2004, 10:44 AM
hello roshan,

good to see ur work and its GOOD !! :scream:

maybe, i agree with the others.. the buildings in the BG can be a bit variant.. and

ur work is progressing good !! looks cool..

10 October 2004, 10:45 AM
hello roshan,

good to see ur work and its GOOD !! :scream:

maybe, i agree with the others.. the buildings in the BG can be a bit variant.. and

ur work is progressing good !! looks cool..

10 October 2004, 11:48 AM
Thanx to all for the replies. Ok I will try make more variations on buildings.:)
Also one more thing once I apply fog to my scene most of the distant buildings won't be seen.

10 October 2004, 09:08 PM
I'm a little late to this question but that one cable does look a little strange being wider at one end. Mainly because non of the others are. Typically cable doesn't bulge like that but then again most cables aren't 50' around or however big they are supposed to be. :)

In case you haven't thought of this. One thing that would help establishing a size reference would be to put lots of other items on the cables themselves. Monitoring equipment, or in the case of these monitoring stations. Most companies with items that take up large amounts of real estate have them perform other actions as well. It's not uncommon to see a process unit with weather tracking equipment or security cameras stapped on the side.

Might be a little early to think about that now.

10 October 2004, 09:35 PM
look great, go on ! continue !

10 October 2004, 09:42 PM
Ok cable size....................Covered.

Ok Building variations topic covered...................

As for what you do have,it's looking real nice Roshan. It's got a bit of a "minority report edge to it,but still more "spaced out"....A good thing.Keep it coming, looking good.

10 October 2004, 10:58 PM
I agree with the rest of the party animals here ...your perspective is refined and buildings are looking great...(i would like a little thinner those wires...just for not loosing scale on the building part...just a thought) refine it....and slow down..u still are running...BUBBLE!

10 October 2004, 12:34 PM (

DimitrisLiatsos, Virtuoso, gpepper, WyattHarris thanx for the replies. Okay
now I have made the wires more thinner.
All c&c's welcome..

10 October 2004, 01:05 PM
Very nice composition. I hope you put some ships into the scene. :) Great work so far.

10 October 2004, 02:12 PM
AirbORn, thanx for replying. Well right now I am making a new spaceship ship concept. I am
trying to make a compact and a very sleek spaceship model.
Thanx again:)

10 October 2004, 02:25 PM
hey man nice ! like it a lot...
just one thing i think that some building are hard-edged :(
their edges are to sharp... try fixing that
BRAVO

10 October 2004, 02:43 PM
wow so much detail already!!!love it

10 October 2004, 02:46 PM
Hello there!

Add antenas to the buildings! Also I think the edges in the buildings are too thin/sharp, also (my personal opinion: A city so futuristic looking will not have cables hanging just like that, I think you have to add some sort of system where the cables look nicer, like bring the cable from the top to the botom along side the mesh/generator and then connect it to the building/generator)Is looking Very good, I like it :bounce:

10 October 2004, 02:48 PM
Arsa has point there :D
maybe remove cables... and put INFRARED connections ! :))
i think it would be great to see rays passing...

10 October 2004, 02:49 PM
great architecture! good work!

10 October 2004, 02:50 PM
The story rocks. That's it, for me. Sketches are good, and I understand where you're going...

10 October 2004, 03:19 PM
Doublecrash, luciano berutti,markovicd.,-Andy- thanx for the replies.
Arsa, you have suggested a very good point, adding antenas will really look cool. Ok The purpose of making cables hang like that is, so that I can show electric fx running through them
as they are destroyed and then the current catches the building to which the generator is
attached, I guess you understand what I am trying to show in my scene. And surely I will be adding the antenas.
Thanx again for the replies:)

10 October 2004, 03:33 PM
Ok about antenas, I was thinking of adding dish antenas.
Any suggestions, all c&c's welcome.

10 October 2004, 03:34 PM
I understand your point of view, but what I was trying to say is. "the city is like a really clean city, you can still do the same thin "idea", but this time arrange the cables, and show how one of the cables have been "shooted" by an enemy, and it will look pretty much the same.

I will hardly suggest to re-arrange the cables in a more "elegant fashion"

Thank you!

10 October 2004, 03:46 PM
ARSA, hey I got your idea, you mean to say that I must show some clips attaching the cables
to the generator so that it looks neat and organised, cool I will do that.

10 October 2004, 03:58 PM
Yeah! pretty much thats the case :bounce:

Hey some more thoughts I got while I was staring at the image...
1: you can add banners, holograms, plasma "something" (like signs, promotion) like a commercial zone. Like in real life, when we go through a commercial place, you see all sort of "elegant" looking banners in the building, promotions and stuff.

2: You can add a clock tower to the scene, that marks the exact time the attack was performed.

(remember this is all my personal opinion)

10 October 2004, 04:07 PM
ARSA, Man you are give me so many cool suggestions, thanx a lot. I like your ideas of add banners and tower clock. I will certainly add all those elements in my scene.
Thanx again:)

10 October 2004, 04:09 PM
you are welcome

10 October 2004, 04:18 PM
hey man love the idea and concept...i was looking at your last update everything looks great its just the wires seem like there floating and are not affected by gravity especially the cut one...unless you plan on it just recently being cut by a passing ship that too is crashing down and starting to fall with sparking coming out of it...i still love it great work so far keep it up

10 October 2004, 05:13 PM
funkymunkey90, Thanx for replying, I will be surely fixing the gravity problems.
Thanx again:)

10 October 2004, 05:43 PM
Great Update!! You did a lot! :bounce:
I like the city, you work very fast.. but i think that the generator can be more detailled  ,
Just an idea ;) .

Keep going!! Update!

10 October 2004, 06:13 AM
SuperXCM, thanx for replying. I am trying to add more details to the generator, but there are
other things to be compeleted, you see days are Quickly passing away, January is near.:)

10 October 2004, 09:57 AM (

I have added a digital tower clock and some signboards. Also I have added some clips which holds wire on the generator, I can't do that for all the other wires, I guess you will - understand after you see the image. Later I will be adding some glow fx on the signboards.
All c&c's welcome.

10 October 2004, 10:54 AM
I have not added antenas on the buildings, Just wanted some suggestions, should I really add
antenas on the buildings, cause my scene is already filled up, I mean I also need some space for adding the Alien spaceships.

10 October 2004, 11:40 AM
hhahah started adding commercial
put giant commercial paper " VOTE FOR MADSHOOTER" :)))))
hahaha kidding just had an idea... well things are going good here ... continue like that i`ll stop by here later
see ya :applause:

10 October 2004, 11:47 AM
To add antennas or not to add antennas, that is the question. Wouldn't mind - throw in some satelite dish thingies too while you're at it. The neon signs add a lot me thinks... think Tokyo here...

10 October 2004, 12:27 PM
markovicd., JamesMK, thanx for the replies. Well I will try adding some small dish antenas later.
Rightnow I have started working on the alien spaceship.
Hey now I feel that it looks like tokyo.:)

10 October 2004, 12:47 PM
I guess now the gravity problem is solved.:)

10 October 2004, 01:00 PM
Nice looking city.I'm also doing a big city scene.

It looks like alot of work?

10 October 2004, 01:24 PM
Well, about the antennea, if you look at any city scape anywhere (even here at modest Baton Rouge, LA) skyscrapers are loaded with antennea, communication arrays, transmission towers, satellite dishes, etc. Remember this is supposed to be print resolution so at that size your image won't be that cluttered. Make sure you keep that in mind when you are designing.

10 October 2004, 04:18 PM
I like the city a lot. As for the signs, my suggestion is to go crowded. So, you'll dig into the imagination of everybody recalling the Blade Runner environment. For what I understood, it will be a crowded scene, so (always MO, of course), if you're able to make it messy without losing focus, it will be a blast.

10 October 2004, 06:59 AM
SONIC-X, WyattHarris and Doublecrash thanx for the replies. Ok I got the idea , So I am
going to add some antenneas and more signboards to give my scene a crowded feel.
Thanx again for rocking suggestions:)

10 October 2004, 07:15 PM
hey madshooter, no signboards, think HUGE LCD screens. :scream: Keep it up.

10 October 2004, 07:44 PM
What about some traffic like in 5th element or something like so to make the city full of inhabitans.
Best wishes

10 October 2004, 08:51 PM
Good to see you progress, coming along better everytime.I like the idea of glow FX eventually.Plus nice large LCD's as Dom suggested would be great to see.................Nice work Madshooter, looking good.:arteest:

11 November 2004, 06:19 AM
dom: Hey thanx for replying, Yeah idea of huge LCD screens is really cool, But what should I
put on those screens, need some suggestions.

kajaba: I will be adding alien ships, so there will be traffic like feel in my scene.

Virtuoso: glad to know, you like my updates. I will surely be adding huge lcd screens.

11 November 2004, 11:16 AM (

I have compeleted modeling the Alien ship. All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 11:20 AM
He he, that's a pretty cool design!

The only thing that strikes me as a bit off would be the feet. They just don't seem very functional. Just a little harder edges and a slightly more mechanical shape would do the trick me thinks. The rest of it looks really nice, with its own peculiar style

11 November 2004, 11:26 AM
Really cute ship - like it! Will it be small, as some kind of sledge - with the alien standing on it, or is it bigger? If it's a sledgeship I think the feet are cool - a bit birdlike.

11 November 2004, 11:30 AM
Yeah, very nice ship dude! cartoon style, keep on

11 November 2004, 12:09 PM
JamesMK: hmmm, I think I need to work more on feets.

Gunilla: It will be a small ship as compared to the generator and It wont be alone, there will
be many ships attacking on the generator.

pBarrelas: hey, is it really looking cartoon style, then I better change my design or maye be
it wont look cartoonish after the texturing is done. Well I am just trying to give it the alien feel.

11 November 2004, 12:17 PM
If you really don't want a toony style, you should look into steering clear of the smooth subdivisions, or at least tighten up the mesh by introducing extra cuts along the edges.

While textures may provide a more realistic surface, they don't really change the way we percieve the actual volume of the model. But you're doing a good job here, so just get back to it and make adjustments to get it closer to the style you're looking for

11 November 2004, 01:22 PM
If you really don't want a toony style, you should look into steering clear of the smooth subdivisions, or at least tighten up the mesh by introducing extra cuts along the edges.

Agree with this, otherwise it look very cool!! Nice modeling! Keep going! :arteest:

11 November 2004, 06:04 PM
The alien ship looks a little cartoony, with all the smoothing going on. If that's what your going for, looks good. The environment might need a little more cartooning if that's the case.

11 November 2004, 08:14 PM
Hi's a very nice addition,I like the lines, the shape and feel........I think some mesh deformation would go very well with this. Some tweaks and dents, bends in the structure of the vessel.Show that it's been through some rough space battles.........Also some added details,a couple extras (I'll leave those to you) would be good to see..............Your work is turning out quite nicely, quite a bit too.I see lots of promise, and already some work reaching that promise here.Keep at it,your hard work is certantly paying off.......:arteest:

11 November 2004, 09:27 PM
To be honest Roshan, if you don't want the ships to look cartoonish you should look to the poly version of the image you've submmited and start from's just my opinion:thumbsup: !

11 November 2004, 08:29 AM
Agree on the cartoony look and suggestions to overcome it, but the ship design is great! Maybe a dad opening the middle spikes would give some more aggresive impression to it. Also great progress in the city! (been a while since my last post)

11 November 2004, 08:32 AM (

Ok, I have modeled a new Alien ship. I guess now it doesn't looks cartoonish.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 08:37 AM
JamesMK, SuperXCM, neble, Virtuoso, pBarrelas, terraarc, thanx for the replies. Well I have
made a new version of the space ship, let me know if this ship works, All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 08:50 AM
lookin cool man..

personally I wouldn't make the top fin so big, the balance seems off .. looks like it might top over if it landed. just my 2cents

11 November 2004, 08:53 AM
That certainly looks tighter. With good textures I think this could be passable - assuming that I understand what you're going for of course ;)

The big tail wing thingy doesn't really work though. It's proportionally off (in my eyes at least) and thus reintroduce another toony quality. But you could fix that easily by just making it thinner, sharper... sort of. Also try adding some sharp seams on those big cannon barrels... a little greebling... and it should be good to go

11 November 2004, 12:35 PM
Yes i think it is better but i agree with the other opinions if your not going to a photorealistic type rendering. You're getting there dude:thumbsup: !!

11 November 2004, 12:59 PM
Versiden, JamesMK, pBarrelas thanx for the replies. Well I will fix that fin and make it more thinner and sharper.

11 November 2004, 04:06 PM
Interesting architecture style on the bulding at left, just you will need to find some other style for your bulding on the background... great image and modelling until now.

11 November 2004, 11:55 AM (

I have done the texturing of space ship.
I have given it a dirty, rusted metal look. Also I have totally removed the fin from my ship model.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 11:59 AM (

Well this is the texture. I have used photoshop for texturing. Its not totally
hand painted, I have used some
Photosource and little paint job.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 12:39 PM
jddog, thanx for replying. Well I will be adding Huge Lcd screens for variation.:)

11 November 2004, 08:40 PM
very nice textures... am not really good on that part:banghead:. keep up!

11 November 2004, 08:43 PM
hey mad like it very much!

11 November 2004, 12:05 AM
Very nice!! I think that your ship is much better now! Well done  !!

11 November 2004, 06:19 AM
uwil, markovicd., pBarrelas, thanx for replying. I am glad to know that you all liked my spaceship:)

11 November 2004, 07:38 AM here now...i saw your modeling and texturing...and i think theyre good ...the textures youre painting looks nice...but something is wrong about specular ...the material seems like plastic...maybe it needs more metalness for the material....and also try to make harder edges for the ship...well is just a little advice...ill be following your work man....

11 November 2004, 08:37 AM
Nice but I think it would be better if you paint different parts for each surfaces... The texture tiles too much, in my opinion...

11 November 2004, 01:10 PM (

This is quick work in 3dstudio max. I have created this space scene for the lcd screen display. Eveything is done in max, modeling texturing and for stars and glows I have used videopost filters.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 01:13 PM (

A small update. City with Lcd screen, some sign-boards and lamps on the bridge.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 01:18 PM
gpepper, rattlesnake, thanx for replying. Well I am still working on the textures and Yeah I also
have to make it look more metal. I will do it.:)

11 November 2004, 02:48 PM
wow, slow down ;p

your scene is coming along nicely..

suggestion, how about a alien babe instead in the lcd? but then It might look too Bladerunnerish

how about panning the camera higher up so that the scene has more of a horizon, atm it looks a little dense, so by showing more of the sky, u have a cleaner area to look at, then all the detail of the city below...

11 November 2004, 03:19 PM
Looks like it is coming along nicely, but i think there isn't to much space left for much more (or are you going to do much more on the foreground?

also i have to agree with rattlesnake, the buildings look a bit plastic (or at least to "nice")
how about the sky? you could make it another color, red orso (you can see what you want) maybe you could also add some stars, a moon or other nearby planet.

11 November 2004, 03:49 PM
:wavey: Yo! great progress I see...

First of all I don't want to sound too bossy, lol! so my apologies for the long post. Here are my crits so far :)

For the space ship texturing = looks good, but I thing is too shiny, I mean lets be real, that ship traveled long distance and others planets, just think of galactic dust. I think is way too specular (shiny). Another think is the exhaustion (rockets in the back) I think you should add some really heavy dust in this area, make it black, like in real life mufflers or any sort of exhaustion, has residues because of the exhaustions :) Another little thing that caught my eyes is this: This people/race (the people with the ship) have enough intelligence to build and drive those ships right? So that mean there can be millions of those things around, right? Here is my point now: Give it some sort of personal identification, like in real life we use plates in our cars, motorcycles, etc... Even space rockets have some sort of name going across the surface, etc.

Regarding the actual scene = First of all, add the sky dome, it will help visualize the "city" and my brain will try to stop thinking that I'm looking at a giant prop set in some studio. Regarding the lights in the scene, can you show me where r your lights in the scene, I mean I see light bouncing everywhere, but some of the stuff in the scene do not have any light effect in some of the surfaces. For example, the LCD doesn't have any effect on that bridge.

and neither the spot lights in the bridge. Regarding those spotlights, I think white light should work best than yellow light.

Regarding the bridge: First "Is the bridge Floating?" because I don't see any sort of support for it. Like columns or something (gravitational orbs, gravitational disk, gravitational platforms?)

Overall scene = this is a huge city right? Big cities have this sense of density, Versiden has a point there, I think you should give it a try, moving the camera just a tiny bit upwards, showing more sky would be nice. Also I suggest you can use the 3/4 camera view give it that cinematic look. It will help you spread some of the stuff around and will help you focus on one thing rather than having it all in a square "box" see!?

Well your work is excellent and has improved a lot! Keep that great job man!

Remember this is only my way of thinking; you do not have to follow any of this stuff. But I really suggest checking 2 things, your camera and the lights, if you want to go the 100 miles I here to help!

- peace and cheers!

11 November 2004, 07:12 PM
The overall night style here will work very well I think. You will need a lot of various lightsources to sell the final shot... and what ARSA said about showing more sky is a very good suggestion if I may say so... it feels a little too crammed in there right now (a futuristic city is obviously going to be crammed, but the image doesn't have to be... if you see what I mean here).... Good job so far

11 November 2004, 08:18 PM
wow.. great modeling.. could use some more bilboards =)

11 November 2004, 12:33 PM
Man, I am glad to see so many replies. Versiden, |-|ČO, ARSA, JamesMK, vrhead, thanx a lot for replying:) . Ok according to the suggestions things I have to do are,
1) Chane the camera angle
2) Add a sky line
3) Lighting
4) Make the spaceship look metallic.
So below are some updates.

11 November 2004, 12:36 PM (

Ok I have created this sky using sapphire plugins in After-FX.

11 November 2004, 12:40 PM (

Well I have changed the angle and fov of my camera. Now sky line is visible, also I have added two tunnels downwards near to the generator.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 12:44 PM (

Ok this is just a lighting test. Well I am trying to show the light of Lcd screen reflecting on bridge and the generator area.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 12:47 PM
Your render is much better, but i think that you should decrease the amount of color bleeding on the bridge and generator, just a litle!!

11 November 2004, 01:34 PM
pBarrelas, Thanx for replying, yeah it is bleeding too much, I will fix it.
Thanx again:)

11 November 2004, 03:14 PM
Pushing the buildings back gives a much better scale to the city, much more vast. You may want to lower the interlacing on the "LCD" screen since LCDs don't interlace. I would suppose that's to make it look more like a screen but I would suggest a grid pattern instead. At hi-res it should show up pretty good.

What is generating the colors on the bridge, the screen or lamp light?

11 November 2004, 08:24 PM
hi...modeling is looking nice mate...about the light test i think that the lcd screen doesnt have too much power to generate that kind of lighting effect...i think that this effect needs to be very soft...

oh and i really like your new tunels mate are they going to be cristal?

11 November 2004, 06:57 AM
WyattHarris: Thanx a lot for replying. Well the screen is generating colors on the bridge. Right
now it is bleeding too much, I still have to fix it.

rattlesnake: Yeah you are right the screen's light is not that intense, I will surely make it more soft and mild. Actually I was thinking of giving a metalic look to the tunnels but crystal feel will also look cool.

Thanx again for replying:)

11 November 2004, 11:44 AM (

I have adjusted the lights intensity, I guess now the lights falling on the bridge looks soft and mild. Also I have added fog in the background.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 11:50 AM (

Well now the bridge looks empty as if no one uses it. So I have modeled this transport truck, which I will be adding later in the scene after the texturing is done. I have not added lot of details as it is not a very important part of my scene, Just trying to add some elements on the bridge.

11 November 2004, 11:54 AM
really cool composition madshoota!colors are comin' good! i like the way the background fade like smoke..keep goin'

11 November 2004, 12:05 PM
amazing progress, congrats

11 November 2004, 12:34 PM
Jaba153, jddog thanx a lot for kind words:) . Well for creating that smoky feel I just done a small trick, I created a plane in Max and just added an opacity map of the same skyline.
Thanx again for replying.

11 November 2004, 12:44 PM
Just keep rolling along roshan......More and more.....Don't forget you got to texture all these........;) :arteest: .........Looking good, vast and quite complex.....You have some nice depth as well in the scene........Keep it going strong......:arteest:

11 November 2004, 12:50 PM
Virtuoso, thanx for replying, Yeah lot of things has to be textured, generator, building and all other small elements which I have added in my scene, But as per my plan I guess I might be able to compelete the finished scene.:)

11 November 2004, 07:07 AM
that's looking much better man.. wow

so much more sense of depth with the fog you added

11 November 2004, 11:46 AM (

Well this is a rough composition. I have just added all the elements in my scene. In my final scene there will be more number of Alien ships.
Modeling is compeleted, only thing remaining is I have to add some kind of support to the bridges.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 11:52 AM (

Started texturing the building.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 11:55 AM (

Also I have started texturing the Generator. All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 11:57 AM (

All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 12:02 PM
nice looking textures, it should be cool seeing this when it's finished, maybe you should put some more streaks of dirt/rust comming down from where those tubes go into the wall

11 November 2004, 12:18 PM
Versiden and itsruinedmylife thanx a lot for replying.:)

11 November 2004, 12:28 PM
Whaouw... you work so hard and fast Roshan...

I don't read all, but I've watching all picture... you like building I think :D a lot of good things...

Your truck is really funny... maybe too different if we compare it with the other peaces of the scene... but for what not... with good texturing, I'm sure the result will be perfect, no ?

11 November 2004, 12:41 PM
gr8 work mate! just slow down little bit... :D

11 November 2004, 12:54 PM
Nice update!! I like it!

The texture are very cool too! Perhaps the generator can be illuminate a little by the front, because, i thinks that this dark shadow hide a lot the modeling... but it's just an idea...
(i don't know if you understand what i want to say  )

But, you do a very good work on the modeling and texture, keep going man!! :buttrock:

(SuperXcm waiting for his computer to continue the challenge.... ;) )

11 November 2004, 12:55 PM
wonderufl progress and well... really fast !

11 November 2004, 02:14 PM
Hi Roshan,
what a big step forward...:applause: Haven't visited your thread since one week ...and what a progress! Fantastic, dude!

I like the dynamics from the ships and the trafic...Keep it up like that, mate!:bounce:

11 November 2004, 02:36 PM
I like the composition, gives a clear view on the ships and still keeps it filled.
textures are looking sweet.
you're doing a great job on this one:applause:

11 November 2004, 05:13 PM
I will add another comment/critic as soon as you post a render with light and textures of all the objects in the scene, like an overall render... So far so good, looking good, keep it up :D

11 November 2004, 05:40 PM
I really like this scene so far. WOW :) Press on - your doing a great job.

11 November 2004, 05:57 PM
It's looking good

You should however consider going a little easy on that coarse bump on the building walls. Fact is that it ruins the scale a bit. To perform a little test, you can try switching off the bump channel, load the bumpmap as a specularity and/or reflection map instead, and maybe scale it down (or increase the tiling)... render and see... I'm sure it will make the building look bigger.

11 November 2004, 10:38 AM
Good start on the texturing there! Kind of too dark so far but waiting for updates

11 November 2004, 11:09 AM
Hi Roshan......You are going at light speed it seems......:wip: ......Your compo and models and now texturing at full tilt........I have weeks of modeling still, and am just doing texture tests as I go......So when I see your deep into texture phase it is something.............I think James brought up my exact thoughts on the "Bump" of the walls.....I would agree to tone this down some, sometimes less is better in many things......Also I think you have too many colors/textures,it seems a bit loud, too much going on,perhaps you should cut a couple colors out and add some of your favorites in there place? This of course is just a taste thing, for me it seems right, for you I may be completly wrong in my thoughts, but I like to call things as I see them......................:)

Ok it's WIP for a reason, and you sure have alot done, doing a good job here, just keep at it as you are...........All the best Roshan...........:arteest:

11 November 2004, 12:35 PM
Wow so many replies, Lemog, markovicd., SuperXCM, jddog, Saschi0815, KennyM, ARSA, Daniel McMillan, JamesMK, terraarc and Virtuoso thanx a lot for replying, glad to know that you all are following my post. Well About the textures I agree with James and Virtuoso they are too loud and litle bigger in size, so I will manipulate my textures again in photoshop and make the colors more or less same and also I will increase the the tiling. The generator rightnow looks little dark, I am still working on the lighting part.
Thanx again for replying.:)

11 November 2004, 12:40 PM (

Ok the transport truck is textured its almost done. All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 12:43 PM (

I guess now the ship has a metallic look.
All c&c's welcome.

11 November 2004, 06:55 PM
ohh yes...i love the rusted look on your texture...good work man!

11 November 2004, 07:42 PM
Nice work !!!

And good luck for the challenge ;)

11 November 2004, 09:32 PM
I really like the way the ship is looking now, but to be honest the truck has a cartoonish look. I know that you don't want this kind of look so i suggest you to change some things on it, like the midle wheels (try to put them more in the front or back), increase the detail or try to use diferent textures for the diferent parts of the truck. I hope this could help!!:)

11 November 2004, 10:34 AM
Progressing well there! Agree on pBarrelas comments on the truck. Also I would suggest going on a different color scheme for the alien ship than the one used in the city, in order to show better cultural and technological differences

11 November 2004, 01:02 PM
rattlesnake, Dravenfr, pBarrelas and terraarc thanx a lot for replying. Well you all right, now the truck is looking little cartoonish, I will try to make it more realistic. You all have to excuse me, say for one or two weeks, I have got stuck in a deadline job, I wil try to compelete it and get back as soon as possible.

Thanx again:)

11 November 2004, 01:06 PM
Good realisation, but I think you're idea is a bit... classical. Remind me a bit Blade Runner.

11 November 2004, 04:10 PM
hey, i don't know if you allready corected it or not, but in the textures of the building..the holes looked a bit..big, it still is iron, isn't it? it's just a suggestion though :D

11 November 2004, 05:12 PM
Hi Roshan, back again... stunning eye candy here  - very nice textures as mentioned above....and the idea with the different color schemes from terraarc is a good point to think about...

keep on and all the best to you with your job:bounce:
Looking forward to "see" u soon....

11 November 2004, 10:51 AM
heya dude.. just checking back, you've made some good progress mate. Keep it going, the final image will look kickass.

11 November 2004, 01:44 PM
NicoDN, |-|ČO, Saschi0815, Versiden thanx for kind words, I am trying to finish my job as soon as possible.
Thanx again for replying:)

12 December 2004, 01:49 PM
Great, great... I see everything is comming along nicely. I will suggest de-saturation for the colors and lowering the "glossines" in th eship. For the truck, I will suggest removing the yellow lights on front and replacing it with a flat surface, since thats low poly. Add the lights texture based. I dont think you should put that much effort into that truck, is not even a strong element for the comp.

keep it up!

- cheers!

01 January 2005, 02:05 PM
Hey Roshan, my friend, have u break up???

Love your entry, so pls. finalize it, mate:bounce:

01 January 2005, 06:58 AM

I am sorry I couldn't compelete my final image, got busy with some commercial jobs.
Anyways best of luck:thumbsup: to all of you for final renders.
