Well here we go. Finished at last and learned a lot. Just to finish was a struggle, phew. Thanks for the comments. Good luck to all.

Hello everyone and good luck. Sometimes the problem with SciFi is that it all seems to have been done before. Mine is along the lines of a planetary invasion looked upon by the indigenous lifeforms. Unfortunately the invaders will come off worse. The background structure indicates an advanced civilization. Ooops :o)

10-19-2004, 02:26 PM
This seems to be a good idea. I seem to recall some stories by Isaac Asimov that dealt with looking at the 'bigger picture" from the perspective of indigenous forms of life on the planet which the story took place. It's an angle I don't see used often.

Good luck to you...

Just a few thoughts relating to the landing craft. It will be seen unfolding in the final image. Will leave the texturing until later.

From the first sketch there is no mid range features. So I've included troopers. A lot of work to do. Need to sort poses and work on the overall perspective. No firm idea on the foreground yet.

I was getting nowhere with my previous concept as I couldn't see how it would be an iconic image, so I have changed tack. I have moved to the construction of a super massive spaceship. The story behind goes like this. Even with faster than light drive (1000c) galactic distances are still an obstacle. To span the known galaxy still takes a lifetime. The thought of moving between galaxies still a dream, until now. The construction of a new ship with exponential light drive is under way. Journeys that would have taken thousands of years will be reduced to days. With the combined knowledge and abilities of the known galaxy a new stage in there civilisation is about to begin.

Dabbled with a sketch of the transporter/work horse. By its nature it is nothing glamourous. There will be a few in the foreground and used to show the scale of the ship under construction. Aim to now model this to get a feel for the other ships.

10-30-2004, 08:15 PM
i really like ur ship concepts they look real cool...:D

Basic structure of the transporter. Used the sketch as a starting point. After some rejigging I came up with this idea. I like the heavy feel of it. Need to refine the model and add the detail. Only 78 days to go :0)

When I started to flesh out my transporter nothing seemed to fit so I've had to go back a step. Here are the storage tanks (need greater detail) but the basic idea is now sound. Gosh this is not at easy as it first appeared. Everyone who finishes should get a "I've managed to complete the Competition" badge :o) Good luck to all

Slighty more detailed. Ignore the colour its just an aid. Need to add some central body work (always try to make a structure possible). Then add the front shield and back control rooms and engines. May leave it at that point and come back later to complete the texturing.

Have now got the jist of the transporter. Will have to refine the engines and control rooms. Lots to do.

Hi All. Added some more to the transporter. Still at a very rough stage. The front 'shield' will change. Also I may increase the length to carry double the cannisters. I will also produce different cannisters representing different cargo. Comments greatly welcome.

11-09-2004, 04:46 PM
Hey Paul,

I like the storyline , I think it conveys an epic moment for travel. The model is coming out okay but I don't get a sense of scale yet from the model, maybe the small details will help out here. Nice work so far , I agree with the badge for completing the contest too.

My GSO entry

11-09-2004, 08:57 PM
Thanks for your comments Mike. The model will be used in the foreground and an entire fleet will spiral back to the 'giant' ship (well thats the current thinking) I'll use this sweep of craft to provide the idea of scale. Good luck to you.

Just returned to the concept to flesh it out a bit more. Excuse the simple sketch. I tend to return to the beginning to build up for the final image. That way I can further identify objects requiring modelling and make the image grow. I think the concept is sound. The focus of the image will have to be sorted.

Doodling over a lunch time. Came up with an idea for my giant ship (BTW the front is to the right). Thought I'd put it in. Will model it next. Due to its distance in the final image I think it will be mostly detailed with texture maps.

Extended the transporter. Added the engines. Now to finish off the front 'shield'. Then requires texturing. Dont panic....58 days to go

11-20-2004, 11:23 AM
I really like the concept you had for your first sketch with those creatures looking upon the landing. I mean that like screams to be made. You if make those ceatures all super furry and cute with big eyes.. the background with a really nice atmosphere with like 2 big moons ...

are you still doing this and the rest of theses sketchs are adding to the first sketch?

11-20-2004, 02:48 PM
Hi Xero'

The latest models are now part of my second concept, that of a space scene with a massive ship. I moved away from my first concept as for me it wasn't hanging together as per the remit - Space Opera. Also my skills will modelling are not up to scratch for doing characters and creatures in detail. Your modelling skills as per your entry are far superior to mine. Good luck.

Linking together the docking tower with the transporter. A quick test to see how the overall picture is developing. Added sketches to build on the modelling and give me a way forward.

11-21-2004, 11:33 PM
This is very interesting. Looks like you got a ton of work left to do?

Just the start of the texturing. Playing with bump maps then need to think of a colour scheme. Also watching the size of the files. No need to have huge maps which are only in a small area on the final layout. :)

11-24-2004, 12:02 PM
pretty cool concept. this looks quite promising

keep it up

An upload of the docking arm. Applied bump maps now need textures and some rejigging.

12-04-2004, 06:08 PM
Nice work being done here... I would advice to add more plating on the surface. Just cut with some grey color your bump map:) those platings should be less deep as the present bump.

12-04-2004, 09:07 PM
Thanks for the advice arturro. I'll look to add greater detail, now that the basic maps are complete. Your ships look great  , very detailed.

Im going to add texture then review the detail and lighting before jumping in. Only 44 days to go  I've also toyed with adding detail like minor meteor strikes (Im sure the docking tower has been in space a long time)

Good luck to you.

Just a quick download to keep my hand in. Basic transporter engine. Nothing fancy just an Ion drive. Love the fact that the real ones have a blue exhaust. Got to texture etc. Good luck to all.

Added engines and finally come up with a front shield. Looks like this type of transport will bulldoze its way through space. Next is texturing texturing and texturing.

Update to the 'rough' final layout. All one scene at the moment but will split out to background, midground and foreground to ease the next stages. I also need to come up with a backdrop. Dont want to use a real one. Will think of one of my own (using particules probably). 36 days to go, good luck, dont panic.

An update. I've split the foreground out and textured the docking tower. Now I've added the transporter and have to texture it. Also added a planet in the background as a start of that plane. Good luck to all. Fantastic work guys and gals.

Used particles to generate the star field. Then added a moon/planet. Also the image contains a prototype star ship. I think the foreground imagery takes up too much space on the final image, so may shift it down to the left. Comments gratefully received. Good luck to all.

Trying out the background lighting. Im yaking space as being dark blue rather than black. Using the ship as the test subject. I need to finish off the modeling/texturing and include the detail lighting and primary light.

Lighting test. Back/mid and foreground included. Hmmm 14 days to go. It looks like its going to be close. I need to add and mod lots of things. Good luck to all.

01-03-2005, 11:45 AM
I think you should work on the textures you could improve them with sure :)

01-03-2005, 04:35 PM
Thanks for your comment. Yep I need to work on the textures. I hope to make them more detailed than the ones I've used so far. Good luck

I've revisited the textures and added lighting on the tower and made them more detailed. Pity they dont show up that well on this resized image. I should have rendered at this size instead. Added a control room and need to sort the windows. I will sort the textures of the foreground transport and the docking arm this week. The background needs a lot of work and that is what I am working on at the moment. Good luck to all.

An outline of the giant ship. Cut and paste with the last image to give me an idea of how it fits in. I like the size and reminds me of a sword. I will light the 'dark side' with nav lights and engine glow.

01-09-2005, 03:08 PM
How much more work you have to do on this?

01-09-2005, 07:17 PM
Hi jfelrod1960. I've got quite a bit to do, but I think Ive got it straight in my mind the steps I need to do to achieve a finished product. Time is getting should but with a fair wind in my sails I should be able to achieve everything by the 17th. The large ship will be mostly texture and the middle ground ships are already modeled but will require tweeking. There is bound to be a surprise on the way but thats part of the fun.

I've changed the background ship, so here it is. There is more work to do on it (further mapping, lights and geometry). Got this weekend to tidy everything up. Phew its going to be close. Good luck to all.

01-14-2005, 09:47 PM
Good luck to you too Paul. I hope you finish in time. Looking forward to seeing the final image.

Added docking ports to background ships. I will have ships going in and out. Cut and pasted the foreground to give me an idea how it is coming together. Thought I\\\'d let you see. Please excuse the blank area I interrupted the render as I had what I needed. Good luck to all.

A rendering test for the foreground. I did it at full size and took an hour. Phew. A few tweeks and its done. I just need to do some touches to the background (that renders in an hour) and link through with the middle ground. Then build the final image. Its going to be tight. Good luck to all, the entries are great.

Just added some lighting to show the docking bays. Hope it shows up in this reduced image. I'll now use this image (the true size one) as the background to the middle range image and so on to the foreground.

Last day. Used lights to hightlight the mid field ships. Here is one example. Mid field is rendered. Now I'll use the image as the background to my foreground (if you know what I mean). Good luck to all.

Well here we go. Finished at last and learned a lot. Just to finish was a struggle, phew. Thanks for the comments. Good luck to all.

01-19-2005, 06:37 PM
Hey Paul,
Congrats on finishing , its a very nice image. I especially like the G5 tower on the left very nice.
Good job and Good luck.

01-19-2005, 06:55 PM
The ships and buildings are well designed (vey clean looking); noticed a few areas that look a little artifact-y, though (did you use antialiasing?).
Good job on finishing. :)

01-19-2005, 07:29 PM
Thanks for the comments. One of my aims was to finish.

The tower is my favourite part and the thing I burned the hours on. If the competition was about towers phew....who knows where I would have come...:)

I did use antialiasing but on one or two parts I tried to reuse texture maps etc (lesson learned). Artistic Visions, which parts have the artifacts (I bet they are where I rushed)

The image is too clean and for the foreground transporter a bit boxy, I needed to add some grubbiness (if thats a word) to show things had been in space for a long time...e.g. meteor strike repairs.

There was a lot more I would have liked to have done but dont know how to do it at the moment, but I'll be better next time :) . Also I rushed at the end. Next time I'll plan better.

Next competition Plan
Item 1. Make a plan :)

Good luck to you

Ah, that might explain it (yes, it's where you mention that has the artifacting); if it had been blurred just a bit, it would be noticable (it just needs a softness to it to take away from some of the hard edges).

01-19-2005, 08:49 PM
hi, good style! and what software used? I love your work. ,good luck

Thanks eatbug. I used Truespace and Paintshop Pro for the textures etc.
