Good luck Torsten - bring on the space donkeys :buttrock:

10-18-2004, 11:01 PM
torsten.....................Good luck, and may the space opera be an epic one for you.I'll keep a watch for your entry.Have fun, until later......................:arteest:

10-19-2004, 12:38 PM

thanks for the warm welcome. This is really a fantastic topic. I already have an idea what kind of picture I want to make. The story is evolving in the moment an I hope I will be able to show a concept soon.

Let the fun begin and May the Schwartz Be With You!

Ok here is my concept.

The distant future. Global warming has made the earth a hostile place and mankind had vanished long time ago. Only one place has been left, where life was still able to resist. Antarctica. But now slowly the atmosphere starts to diffuse into space bringing the same fate to Earth as to Mars millions of million years ago.
So the last inhabitants of earth prepare for the final voyage which will take them far into the unknown regions of space to find a new Antarctica.

10-20-2004, 05:19 PM
cool , I like the spacesuits :)

10-20-2004, 05:25 PM
Looks like a commercial picture, like you can have an audience starins at a huge tv screen :D

10-20-2004, 05:31 PM
Waaahaa! Very much in character for you, Torsten - Penguins in spacesuits... that just can't go wrong, can it? :D

here are my first modeling attempts for the penguins in spacesuits. I am just wondering how to make the creases into the suit. May be I will try via texture.

Some update for the penguins in space suits.
The helmet needs more attention, but it starts to take shape.

C&C are welcome.

10-24-2004, 10:48 AM
Ha ha! Excellent, love it! Though I would prefer to see more a voluminous belly on them, just really chubby like penguins often are.

10-25-2004, 08:32 AM
yea and some wrinkles on the suit maybe ?

10-25-2004, 11:49 AM
Thanks for the comments.

@JamesMK: There will be some more penguins in the scene than shown on the concept. I promise there will be some really fat among them. :D

@Squibbit: Wrinkles on the suit is something I also want to have. The problem is, I have to take care that the patch-count isn’t rising to high otherwise my machine will give up. I will try to get some wrinkles via texture.

Right in the moment I am working on the space-ship. Maybe this evening I will be able to show some first impressions.

here is a first model of the spaceship. Still very basic.

10-26-2004, 03:56 AM
i like your concept very much:)

10-26-2004, 04:49 AM
Penguins in space suits - love the idea!

As the penguins have to work day and night to get their space ship ready in time, they need some lights to work during the night. Here is an overview of the ship and the four lights.

And here a detailed view of the lights.

10-27-2004, 08:25 PM
You really have the most strange ideas, man. You know that? But I like it a lot!

I imagine the balloons will come in all bright colors, like at a birthday party... Keep going :wip:

10-27-2004, 08:54 PM
hahaha :applause: what a cool idea (no pun intended :) ) and original, I really like it

10-28-2004, 07:05 AM

Here is the missing part for the balloon-lights. The control point and the tanks for the filling.

10-28-2004, 07:22 PM
that's the sort of in depth detailing I like , fill up station :)

10-28-2004, 07:42 PM
Alright Torsten...................I like the fresh angle/approach you are taking. That "Penguin vessel with it's contraptions are fun and fresh.A funky like style and interesting to look upon, keep this coming, very nice effort.:arteest:

10-28-2004, 10:04 PM
Hey, a world full of penguins!! This is very optimistic.
Cool and funny idea. And nice modeling skills you have!
Definitely, this will be a very nice image.
Torsten, I'll be looking forward to your work.
Keep it up!!

I blocked out the final layout. I decided to place a city in the background and therefore I needed a connection between the city and the place where the ship is build. So I modelled this sky train. I didn't put to much detail on it, because it will only be quite far in the background. Just the pylons we get some more attention.

Here is a small crane. It will be located on the ship to lift some of the heavy steel beams.

10-29-2004, 07:58 PM
:applause:I really like your concept!! Very cool! And Original! :applause:

And nice modeling too!! Keep going!!

Good work, very original!!:buttrock:

Just a small update for the space ship.

10-30-2004, 08:31 PM
Keep on bringing it Torsten................These details grouped as one in the end will pay off big time.Go for whatever you can get away with poly wise in your models.Calculate the entire scene now,see just where you are headed. But try and give as much poly count to these models in the end.Leave the low poly counts to games of old.If you need help with compositing tips etc,etc...just PM me when the time is here,I'll be glad to help, this will open up many options for you.................Ok keep going hard,I like your plan and overall design.Keep bringing it.:arteest:

10-30-2004, 09:22 PM
This has got to be the coolest concept i´ve seen so far in this challenge. Definitely looking forward to see more of it. :)

10-30-2004, 09:50 PM
not sure about the final layout there Torsten almost looks as though the penguins might be bigger than the train at the moment... or I a reading it wrong  , all the same keep going you seem to have managed to find a mix between fantasy an logic with this concept that I really find most fascinating

10-31-2004, 01:42 AM
you penguin guys can't even see the 'box' -your uniqueness and dedication to thinking outside it is inspiring!

i see you haven't really gone into textures yet but i wonder if you are thinking how the spacesuits, even the spaceship, might convey or incorporate the penguins' natural colors (penguin tuxedos)

-guess i'll have to wait and see...

10-31-2004, 07:52 AM
Just stopped by to thank you all for your wonderful support. All this kind words are even more valuable than the amazing prizes. So I have already won. I am really glad that you like my entry and I will give my very best to reach your (and my) expectations.:bounce:

@Virtuoso: Thanks man, I will definitely come back to your offer. I will put as much detail into the models as my machine can handle. Also the program I am using (Animation:Master) is a little bit limiting as I can only model with splines. So no polygons. Only 4-point and sometimes 3-point and 5-point patches.

@flyingP: I hope you are reading it wrong. :DMay be I will become more clear when the actual model will be placed into the scene. Also the train will be full of penguins, which should show the dimensions.

@jamming: I have not jet really thought about textures. But the ship in a tuxedo is an interesting idea. May be I’ll give it a try. :thumbsup:Thanks.

Thanks again everybody

10-31-2004, 07:57 AM
- - - Also the train will be full of penguins - - -
To me that translates to:

10-31-2004, 08:25 AM
@flyingP: I hope you are reading it wrong. :D

wouldn't be the first time Torsten

I agree with the wabbits transation too :D

Ok, I have split the spaceship into different parts. The hull and the inner “under construction” part. Both in one model is something my machine could not manage. I have to compose these elements later. For now I have started to remodel the hull. Here are two parts. The wing with the engine and one part of the landing gear.

Have fun,

11-01-2004, 02:06 PM
Well done refinements to the ship parts. And to think it's all made with spline patches makes my skin crawl! :D Jolly good job.

Just a small update of the space ship.
This is really a great challenge especially for my machine. It's already getting slow, and the ship is not jet half finished.

A close up of the bow gate. It will be build into the ship when this will be finished.

11-03-2004, 01:41 PM
hey Russel , how about some polar bears in the pic ?

great progress , btw

11-03-2004, 03:18 PM
Thanks man,

polar bears would be a nice idea, if I wouldn’t be a biologist by education. So it is impossible for me to place polar bears an penguins into the same picture. :argh:

Here is a small car for the penguins to drive around. It's for tow to three penguins, but if necessary there is space for 10 more on the back.

11-04-2004, 08:21 PM
Those cars merely proves you're nuts. They look very good and fit the overall style perfectly.

Funny thing about the penguin/polarbear connection btw... There's an MTV show here called 'MTV Up North' specifically airing scandinavian bands, and what do they show in the introduction/logo stuff every time? Penguins. Up North=penguins?

11-04-2004, 08:48 PM
a penguin pickup .......

really like the landing gear on the ship too :applause:

11-04-2004, 10:56 PM
The torsten space fleet is going strong.........the style all fits with one another, and the overall scene looks like it will be a fun and unique one for sure, nice work torsten.............Keep them coming.........Make animation master proud.....I will always be found of it as it was my first app............a while back now,but I have nice memories..........:arteest:

11-05-2004, 06:46 PM
Those cars merely proves you're nuts.

o yea forgot them pengs n bears dwell on different poles

anyways , great job u doin here

Since the construction of the space ship is by far the most significant event in penguin history it has become quite a tourist attraction. So Tabnatu, a very clever business-penguin had that brilliant idea of opening up a sushi-bar next to the construction area. And what place would be better than the rooftop of the Epic Voyager, Inc. tower.

11-06-2004, 02:44 PM
The penguins definitely had to have SUSHI, totally hilarious, yet so logical.
Love your overall design, so coherent. Keep them coming!

11-06-2004, 03:00 PM
Oh my goodness, I've never laughed so hard at a thread before. This is fantastic! Technically virtually flawless. Golden!

11-06-2004, 03:40 PM
haha very original and extremely funny

Tell me how did the penguins get so intelligent?
Mad scientist passed his DNA before he died or?

anyways, keep up the great progress, im lovin it :)

11-06-2004, 06:05 PM
Thank you very much for your kind words. I really appreciate them. It’s very encouraging to know you like it.

@JohanL: Thanks man, well the answer is quite simple: Evolution. (Oh, and lots of fish of cause:D)

Just an elevator to the sushi-bar.

11-06-2004, 06:16 PM
lol, its a good mix between funny concept and originality  the lobby-bar is really cool!

11-08-2004, 10:06 AM
Hi Russel!

Great scenario for a "Grand Space Opera", and great to see your advances in Animation:Master!

I'll definitly follow your thread, keep up the good work! :D

Happy splinin'

11-08-2004, 01:11 PM
Man, i love your concept and your modeling are very cool!!

Specially the Eggy Car .... it's very original!!
Keep posting!! :buttrock:

11-08-2004, 11:57 PM
Oh, just occurred to me... extra points for making the elevator doors penguin shaped... really honestly can't wait to see how all this comes together... if all else fails, I'd like to order a round of sushi.

11-09-2004, 01:32 AM
Impressive concept Torsten , those penguin looks so funny , the car rocks too . it will be funny if you put the penguins in the back of the car with some beers and having fun heading to the sushi bar . Not the final image but just for fun hehe . Keep the good working

11-09-2004, 11:44 AM
A World is born.........Fun and interesting to follow,i like your recent additions again Torsten......I have a Scalawag tavern in the works myself..........But have to say there is no cooler "penguin Bar" in the universe......The bar is for the penguins right?.......I like the progression, the extra models,I think your doing a fine job,a unique one, something outside the "BOX".......keep at it Torsten,........:arteest:

11-09-2004, 05:31 PM
Wow, so much feedback. Thank you all very much. This is overwhelming. :bounce:

@ JamesMK- Nice idea, may be I’ll give it a try. Thanks

@adr. Thanks, I will try to fulfil your whish, but time is very limited at the moment.

@Virtuoso (godfather of polygons) Thanks man. The bar will be for penguins and if my machine will allow it will be full of them. I think I will have to book a flight to CA and use your machine for final rendering.:D Really looking forward to your Scalawag tavern.

Now back to work.:arteest:

11-09-2004, 09:26 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1100035609_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1100035609_large.jpg)

I start modelling the hull of the tower. There will be rooms behind the windows. I will have to model them separately and compose them together later.
I am not jet 100% satisfied with it. Lets see what I can make better.

11-11-2004, 12:15 PM
Grazy,hilarious,delire!!!Nice modelling and top idea!!!
Indeed it could really be cool to put some icebears in there doing the hard work or as doorkeepers at the sushibar:D :applause:
Sure bell watching you,excellent!!!

11-12-2004, 02:24 PM
Thanks OKMER but sorry I have to stay hard. No polar bears in the pic. :scream:
After adding one more level of skin to the tower I had to stop following this approach. My machine can’t handle it anymore. :hmm: In the meantime it takes up to 5 min just to copy/paste some patches. :banghead: The challenge would long be over and I would still model the skin of the tower. So now I have to think of a different way.

11-12-2004, 02:29 PM
Good to hear you stand your ground on the polarbear issue :)

About the technical challenges... I get the feeling that you could get away with very simple geometry for that particular structure, and simply add windows and their air conditioners (?) using bump and colour textures. Fingers crossed here!

11-12-2004, 02:36 PM
Yup, that was exactly the way I want to try next.
But my texturing abilities are quite basic. So a lot to learn in the next days. :wip:

11-12-2004, 02:43 PM
Tips and tricks:

Since the structure is pretty much tile based - model one window section as you would like it to look, then render out a square view (section to be seen in straight top or frontal view) and use that render as a template to paint the texture. You can even render out a depthpass (z-buffer... assuming that A:M can do that) and use that as a bumpmap tile... works a treat, and looks better than any bumpmap you've ever seen before (might need to blur it slightly... small tweaks... but you get the idea)

11-12-2004, 05:47 PM
Hey, thank you very much. Very interesting approach. :bounce:
Now I have to find out if this z-buffer thing works in A:M.
Already played around a little bit with Photoshop but nothing yet to show.

Back to work :arteest:

11-12-2004, 05:53 PM
Now I have to find out if this z-buffer thing works in A:M.
Even if it doesn't, there's a cheat you can use in almost any package:

Use ordinary distance fog/mist. Adjust it's near and far limits so that it goes from no fog to full fog over the depth of the object. Make the fog colour black, and the material of the object white using luminosity/self-illumination (just to prevent it from being shaded). Switch off all lights. Render. This should make parts far away from the camera black, and the closer they are, the whiter they are. Hey presto, a Z-buffer!

11-13-2004, 03:15 PM
Thanks. I think it is possible. I can render the depth as an extra file in A:M. It only looks quite wired. Very colourful. But there is a tool to convert it to an greyscale tga image. But this I have to find first.

Thanks again,

11-14-2004, 10:58 PM

Here is my first attempt in creating a texture for the tower. Just played around with the layer styles in Photoshop.

11-14-2004, 11:42 PM
way to go ! and it's so allright, cause u can come up with amazing
stuff with those layer effects , even by accident !

11-15-2004, 07:29 AM
Ah, good schtuff  You'll save zillions of polygons this way!

keep in mind that those photoshop bevel effects have an implied light direction... it might look weird once mapped and lit in A:M :wise:

11-15-2004, 02:55 PM

@JamesMK: yeah those implied lights are something I am also worried about. I think I will get rid of the bevel & emboss effects and try out how it looks like with just a bump map instead.

11-17-2004, 09:33 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1100727201_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1100727201_large.jpg)

Well painting a texture is one thing, applying it to a eggy shape is the other. Those dammed contortions are driving me mad.

11-17-2004, 10:54 PM
Well painting a texture is one thing, applying it to a eggy shape is the other. Those dammed contortions are driving me mad.

yea i can imagine ! dunno how to help there , maybe use perspective tool on the texture
or sumthin ?

one question : is the wall like really thin ?

11-18-2004, 08:42 AM
one question : is the wall like really thin ?

Good point. I was so fixed on that contortions that I've not noticed that point. :banghead:

Ok, back to work. :arteest:

11-18-2004, 09:11 AM
Hmm... I'm afraid I don't know how A:M handles texturing at all... It looks like the approach as such will work though, so keep at it. And don't forget to check how the egg in question will actually be displayed in the final image - maybe you can cheat somewhere that will not be visible or occluded by something in the foreground.

11-18-2004, 04:32 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1100795554_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1100795554_large.jpg)

Ok, I ran into a dead-end street with my texturing of the tower. Before I go on trying to solve this problem I want to get on overview of the total scene. If I have found the final composition I will hopefully know how to handle this tower problem. So here is a first render of the final scene.

11-18-2004, 07:25 PM
haha I love this mate.... I'd almost try lowering the horizon a bit but....

11-18-2004, 11:17 PM
:bounce: The bubble nut amazing penguins...listen to flyingP and lwer a little bit your Horizon's line...imo

Thanks for your suggestion.
Here is a version with a slightly lower horizon.

11-19-2004, 08:44 PM
bit more perhaps, it'd be nice to have the penguin ship breaking through a bit, you can always go back to the first if it doesn't work. I just feel it may give it a bit more scale though :)

11-19-2004, 08:44 PM
This is one fun entry.......I like the scope,it's turning out nicer all the time........I think you should tilt the camera(View) up just a touch,a bit more sky would be better, just a touch......The compo and layout looks good, nice placement of the pieces

I think you can give the tower a Fractal map Torsten..........it's really a displacement that flat shade the facets of perturbation like they were polys.....they will dynamically subdivide the patches they are applied to.......I also think you should look into the weathering command.....just make sure the patch normals are pointing correctly before doing so......

Have you thought of possibly going the toon route with this? The toon bias would work weel with your models and style here...Just a thought......:arteest:

...........Your doing a nice job here Russel........Give it all the cylinders, keep it going hard............... :arteest:

Thanks for your comments,

Right in the moment I am rendering a composite with an even lower horizon and al slightly tilled camera view.

@virtuoso: Thanks man. Now I will try to understand the middle part of your post concerning the texturing. Lots of things are totally new to me. You read my mind concerning the toon shader. Actually today I was thinking of giving it a try in the final render.

Thanks for all your support.

Ok here is it. I don't think I can lower the horizon much more. But you never can tell.

Ups, I lost the moon:D
I will try to find him tonight and bring him back tomorrow.

Torsten....................Just look them up in your manual......It will make more sense with a full page of instructions..........Just look up Fractal map and weathering command.......Yes I thought toon shading might me a neat trick for your praticualr creations here, and fun theme almost needs it............Yes that last shot is just the right angle. ...It is just what I pictured in my minds eye.cannot be set better for your shot........It works perfectly........Ok I'll be watching, hit it hard...........:arteest:

11-21-2004, 04:18 AM
 I like your idea... very funny. Keep going

11-22-2004, 02:42 AM
beautiful work, Russel...

as a whole, i think you've got something really great going on here, but i wonder if the proximity of the left penguin to the light by his head and the generator/stuff behind him seems confusing; almost like the hose/cord thing is coming out of his left arm (flipper?), which for me, ties him to the middle ground and it's messing with the scale of the foreground penguins. this, with the way the foreground's horizon line is not very defined almost makes it seem like the penguins are too big to fit into their spaceship.

this is probably just me and anyway, these may not even be issues once you get textures and lighting going -just thought i might mention it; i really don't mean to be nit picky or anything because you've got such an original concept with clean, detailed modeling and a well thought out scene. keep it up, man

11-22-2004, 08:01 PM
Thanks for your comments, it’s always a pleasure to read them.

@virtuoso: Thanks for the tips. I will dig through the manual.

@ jammin: I am really glad you like it. You are totally right with this mixing of for- and middle ground thing. I will move either the penguin or the one light a bit to solve this issue. The foreground’s horizon line should be more visible when I start texturing. Thank you very much for your help.

11-23-2004, 05:37 PM
There is only one thing which is better than working for this challenge, and that’s:
Holiday with my wife.
So no more updates in the next few weeks. Thanks again for all your support. Already looking forward to come back.

12-29-2004, 09:42 AM
Thanks guys,

right in the moment I am not really in the mood to continue my work on the challenge.

We spend our holidays in Khao Lak (Thailand) and left the beach on 22. of December. I just can not stop thinking about all the people we met who are most probably dead by now.

My heart is with all those people affected by these events.

12-29-2004, 10:14 AM
Yea I heard of all Thailand Khao Lak got hit the worst .

My bro's in Thailand too , but I heard he's over 200 kilometers
east of Bankok so was mostly unaffected by the disaster. His two Belgian
friends elsewhere in Thailand nearly got killed tho

Take your time to sort things out, I hope you can still continue
the challenge and finish your entry

Best Wishes

Here is a small update for the spaceship. I reached the limit of my machine. Ever new patch takes up to 3 min, which is really taxing my patience.

Hi, here is an update of the overall scene. Modelling is finished. I will only make some minor tweaks here and there. The rest of the time is needed for texturing and lighting.
Right now there are 22 penguins in the scene but most of them cannot be seen in this low resolution. May be I will add a few more, depends on my machine.

Back to business

01-02-2005, 02:06 PM
good to have u back working on the pic , that new years pic was great, too!

I think I found about 15 of the 22 penguins :)

01-02-2005, 02:25 PM
Very Very Lovely Object.... Happy new year

Here is a first try of bringing some colour into the scene. I think I will use mostly just colours where it fits. It will give the scene a comic like feeling which fits the overall scene quite well to my mind. And it helps reducing the render time of course ;-)

And here is a coloured version of the eggy car.

So here is a fully colored version of my picture

C&C are welcome.

01-07-2005, 07:44 PM
nonono, dude, u got yellow snow

01-07-2005, 08:23 PM
lol, looks good man:)

01-07-2005, 08:37 PM
hey, they landed on desert! You should add some haze for more depth of Your pic! But the concept is just : :buttrock:

01-07-2005, 08:42 PM
Thanks for the comments. Actually my first idea was, that there is no more snow and ice in Antarctica due to global warming, but I might rethink this.

01-07-2005, 09:53 PM
uu gonna give me nightmares if u make me dread something like that lies
beneath our polar caps... :)

since your scene is pretty much flat u could put a simple planar texture on
it ... ? rocks with little snow on it ? or just change the color to say dark brown or
what have u :)

01-08-2005, 12:32 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1105187556_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1105187556_large.jpg)

I created a rough texture for the ground. It looks more healthy now. I also tried a snowy version, but the white ground makes the scene look very flat. If I will find some time I may add a few boulders lying around.

01-08-2005, 12:43 PM
but hey looks much better , doesn't it ?

01-08-2005, 05:38 PM
Here is a larger render of the scene. I added a few boulders, an more penguins. Now there are 38 of them in the picture. Right in the moment I try to get some haze and DOF to give the total scene more depth.

01-08-2005, 05:44 PM
yea and maybe a little atmosphere to show in the background ? the balloons couldn't
be up without it ! gonna go n find all the quins now

01-09-2005, 02:20 PM
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1105280426_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/3760/3760_1105280426_large.jpg)

I tried different lighting intensities. I think the upper right is a quite good one. I will have to put some more lights in it to highlight the two penguins in the front, the ship, the train and the sushi bar. I hope this will work.

01-10-2005, 06:54 PM

Here is a small update for the lighting process.

01-10-2005, 08:43 PM
Hi Torsten............The upper right is urely the best choice.A little more vibrant and crisp than the lower left (My second choice)........You got it close to the finishline,i can only say give it your all,and all the best in your final tweaks and work....Until next time ,take care..............:arteest:

01-12-2005, 07:23 PM

I rendered the 3 layers of my picture separate. Now I will have to compose them in Photoshop. The middle part took nearly the whole day to render. Fore- and Background took each about 2 hours.

01-14-2005, 02:14 PM

Here is a first composite of the final image. I added the background and some haze and clouds.

01-14-2005, 03:15 PM
Here is a quick render just to keep a promise. Its Tabnatu the owner of the Eggy Top Sushi Bar. As you can see he is one of his best customer. :scream:

Ok, here is my final image. I hope you like it.

C&C are welcome.

01-15-2005, 03:29 PM
And here you find a larger image. It's 50% of the final image. Final resolution is 3636 x 1546.
