View Full Version : Where is the rest of my HD?

10 October 2004, 04:30 AM
This HD is supposed to be 20Gb, but according to Magic Partition & FDISK the HD is only 9.797Mb!
I don't get it!
How can this be?
The weird thing is that in the Partition Info (MagicP) it says:
Total Physical Sectors: 20,065,122 (9,797.4 Mb)

So why can't I see nor have access to the rest of the HD?

Btw, I already ran all the Maxtor PowerMax tests, including the low-level ...something, the test that obliterates everything. And all this made no difference :(

Should you need more info please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

is this a new drive or do u have an OS already on there? Plug the drive into a Windows 2K/XP based system to see if the system will detect the full size of the drive. We need lots more details before we can give u a good answer.

This is a used HD (Quantum Fireball), in which I'm trying to do a clean installation.
Right now it's not even formated, last event was the low-level erasing test I did with PowerMax. But like I said before, even now fdisk tells me the same thing.

i highly doubt u have a bad mobo.... the problem with the mobo (older ones) was a weird problem that prevented drives larger than 120GB from detecting properly... clearly this drive is nowhere near that. The only other thing i can think of is that there is a partition on that drive that has a foreign file system on it that cannot be detected by traditional PC based ways. Is there Linux or a Mac OS partition on that? If not, u might have a fried drive.

Nothing strange there. Sectors do not equal bytes.

[9,797.4 * (1024^2)] bytes / 20,065,122 sectors = 512 bytes/sector. Fairly standard.

You have yourself a 10GB drive, my friend.

As much as I hate to say it, it seems you speak the truth, Elvis :(
Thank you so much.

I can now continue with the OS installation... :)
