View Full Version : Environment: Lighthouse

I am working on a Lighthouse and I think I coudl use some critic. The modelling is allmost finished (just some edges that need beveling) and took about 5-6 hours so far. The next step would be texturing. I think that the lower part of the tower will be made of bricks while the upper part will be paintet iron (red and white stripes). Finaly I would like to put it into a scene with some cliff and ocean.
Right now I am looking for critic on the modelling:
- do the propotions look right?
- is it detailed enough?
- did I leav anything important out?
- anything else?

I like it alot. I think the textures are really going to make or break it.

The modelling and detailing looks great...no complaints. I'd also really like to see how it turns out with the texturing applied.

I like a lot, but is very big, no? It's like a 13-storey building. I donīt know if there are lighthouses so tall in reality...

I think Runciter is right, although I think an estimate of 13 stories is a little nice... Even if you assume the doorway is 6 feet tall (which is really small), an extremely rough estimate I did (using a mouse and the grid lines, and I tried to err on the side of being conservative) puts the tower at over 250 feet!! If you look at the picture you referenced, and assume that the white part of the two houses on either side are approximately 10 feet high (which is a rather tall house), then that puts the lighthouse at about 110 feet at most. You could easily get rid of one of the center sections and still have a lighthouse that's quite a bit taller than 110 feet. Now, maybe that's what you're going for--a goliath of lighthouses, but the scale seems a bit off for a "realistic" one.

I really think Runciter & truism are right there is a scale/proportion problem. but I think the door is too small for the building not the other way around.
Some of the windows are almost twice as the door's size, and usually light houses uses small windows.
If you used real units for modeling you might want to put an abstract human figure so that everybody can see the true scale of the structure. if you didn't use real units, try and specify the dimentions to see what's wrong if there is any.
and I don't know if this is your first Enviromental image(I don't think it is) but always specify measurments before grabing the mouse, and draw to scale.

Just looking at the buildings across the road from me i can see all sorts of little objects attached to the brick work, lights, burgular alarms, drains, air vents, signs, lightning conductors, service hatches, fire escape ladder - the devil is in the detail.
also the walling around the steps seems a little chunky/cuboid for my liking, like Lego
