Could we plz see an example of what you're referring to as "blended colours"?
There are several ways to do this in PS, so a specific example would help clarify your needs.

It's pretty simple really....
I've had to muck around for ages to learn things like this, so don't feel as if you're 'just not getting it' http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif
I looked at the picture you posted to see the purple and black blend.
Blending works best on layers. I'm not sure how much you know about layers, but it lets you blend different colors and allow changes with that color without ruining the others.
For example. Black background...
Make 2 layers and name them DarkPurple and LightPurple... Hide the top layer so you see the color underneath and play around with a large brush and strength on say about 30%. It involves a log of clicking but the lighter the strength the 'less harsh' it turns out.
When you have a suitable pattern or whatever for that layer, leave it on and turn on the top layer. Again muck around with the brush strengths until you get a strength that you think makes a nice blend. Play around until you get the colors blended nicely......Take your time as rushing things, even if it is 'just a blend' can mean change your whole piece.
If you're happy with the result you have the choice to leave it in layers to come back to later, or you can 'merge' the two together and make one layer.
Here's something i just ruffled up as a 2min example.
Hope it helps. When i started out with photoshop i was TERRIBLE. I'm not too bad now http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/clap.gif Have a look at some of my work here if you like.
