This is what I thought of when I read the 'Film Production Design'
Mainly I thought about what would be used best for color and lighting.
Photoshop 1.2 hours. I think i want to expand on this idea someday. I really like how it came out, all moody and all.

10 October 2004, 01:46 AM
10 mins Wings 3D for basic shapes and perspective.
1.5 hours photoshop with mouse

10 October 2004, 05:58 AM
Finally back from vacation....really missed my internet.

OpenCanvas1.1 :: 1hr :: WPE (
PhotoshopCS :: 15min :: levels, reflections.
~edited :: gave it a glow +5min OpenCanvas1.1
here is the previous version before the edit (

GrizzlyBrice :: I like it a lot. The only thing I would change is to make the queen look more like a female. It kinda looks like it has a beard or something. Maybe some breast highlights would help.
ElysiumGX :: Nice,,,, a mouse....thats tough.
DrawMonger :: sketch looks great.
robinayles :: Funny.

Art2, fantastic lighting!! what do you think of painter 9?

10 October 2004, 11:17 AM
Art2, man, I'm sorry, please forgive me, but what the heck...this is the best piece I've seen from you so far....this is absolutley positively outstandingly brilliant!

What the hell!

C'mon...tell us something more about it! It's just too brilliant really! Brilliant style, brilliant execution, brilliant posture....I'm fcking blown away!

10 October 2004, 11:39 AM

10 October 2004, 11:54 AM
Thanks guys! That's too much praise really, I'm blushing...
I still have lots to learn regarding light.

Drawmonger: I have Painter8, this I made with the demo of 9. What really stood out is the speed. In my eyes worth the 147euro upgrade. So I'll be upgrading soon :)
At the surface it just looks like 8, but I haven't explored every bit of it yet.
I heared Ryan Church finally switched from version 6 to 9, because he thought it was worth it. That's gotta mean something, heh?

Taron: dude, what's there to tell? I wanted to make a black queen, the rest I decided to make up as I went. The canvas was a lot bigger than what you see now. But I just didn't have the time to complete the rest of the room. I definately wanted to add volumetric lighting, because I thought I should push my boundries. Just curious if I could pull it off.
I wasn't satisfied with the final result in Painter, so I called in the help of Phshop. Played with the levels a bit and achieved the final result.

Still feels a bit like cheating really :(

Cheers fellas! :beer:

Taron: 8min :eek:? Sillhouettes are fun, aren't they.

10 October 2004, 12:32 PM
HAHAHA...I think Ryan just switched, because he doesn't have to "register" his layers over top of eachother after copying them anyway.....dear god...that little thing made me disrespect painter even now I also believe it may be a great piece, but I'm still not really comfortable with it....havn't checked out how to tie brushes to keys and such things...without it, it's just not enough like painting, but rather like handling the interface with occasional paintstrokes. I'd love to get some tips there....

However, Art2, your volumetric light ain't it at's the shape and lighting on the character that is so pretty and full of style. Whereby the light kind of works, it still is a bit funky. The chair also has some funky parts...the legs at the bottom look nearly copied from one side to the other and suggest orthographic perspective...strange...I would prefer a bit more's really the figure that brings it all of it...except the foot is too small.... GREAT WORK!

Great work SalamanderCoral. You really get the feeling some bad mojo is about to go down!:D

10 October 2004, 11:38 PM
1 hr 40mins Painter/Wacom with Reference

This one went through quite a few versions, not if this was the best. That's the hardest thing to do I think, knowing when to stop working on the picture. Still so much to learn agggh.

Nice work everyone :thumbsup:

10 October 2004, 11:49 PM
didnt read the that part about prod. design until after i finished...anyways instead of using a pencil and paper i decided to do the outline with a pen, scan it, then add color in photoshop...with a mouse, i dont have a wacom... is what i got...

(the ants are suppose to be black...oops)

10 October 2004, 12:09 AM
Art2 ( vbmenu_register("postmenu_1632259", true); Great composition, love the pose mate. She could sit on my throne anyday.

10 October 2004, 02:31 AM

10 October 2004, 06:13 AM
3h photoshop+wacom
If you see nothing increase the brightness of your screen.
The light of your last pic is very beautiful, Taron333.

10 October 2004, 02:13 PM
Hm wow 1 hour and 30 mintues, I had envisioned something very different, but it came out like this... hm, as always I have problems with backrounds, that is what I will have to learn to do,,, tips>? etc for better backrounds?

10 October 2004, 02:41 PM
30 mintues more, playing around with backround. I decided tojust make it a solid color, and then add more columns so it would nto look so empty. then play some with lighting, its not perfect far from it, but I think it looks better than the first backround.

10 October 2004, 03:40 PM
wow sagi_13! that has got to be one of the, if not the, best of your works i've seen...great job! those columns look awesome!

10 October 2004, 04:52 PM
thank you captain, i am glad I changed the backround, because the first one was definetly not working, I am glad I discovered the wonders of the burn and dodge tool for highlights and shadows,
:) thank you!

Incredible work as always everyone... someday I will catch up to your level!

10 October 2004, 05:51 PM
wow post a quicky on a seemingly dead thread, and booom. Now I come back and see all of the great work. I need to do another one so I don't feel so emabarrased. :sad: awe shucks!

vitrolic - Most energetic one of the bunch.
jasel - well done.
Kieronh - reminds me of world of tomorrow. looks very large.
taron - so soft, feels kind of like the inside of a body or something. fantastic.
bloody joy - very nice, reminds me of a mike hussar painting...I've been so into this guys work I think yours is my favorite today. very nice.

10 October 2004, 07:57 PM
still doesn't compare, but at least I feel better about it.

OpenCanvas1.1 :: 40min :: wpe (

10 October 2004, 12:19 AM
@erilaz ( thank you man, i'm pleased that you like the pic... what a pity that it turned out a bit to small, i can hardly see the queen...:sad:

taron, wow, i like both sketches of you very much, though the second one is really awesome!!! great work :applause:

with kind regards

10 October 2004, 12:22 AM

I did so much tweaking on this, but it doesn't seem to have come out right. I think it lacks "depth"...any tips?

Hi there..
This the First time i participate in this sort of competetion, and i am glad to.

Really Black Queen is Very inspiring, actually it seems to bring alot of dark images to ur mind, but as for me , i want to add a twist.

tools: Pensil Sketch for now, about to be colored using Adobe Photoshop
the idea and the scene took like 40 min, sketching took like 35 min

I think you just need more contrast between your light and dark areas. If you're drawing entirely in grayscale, the extreme foreground (the mouth of the cave) should be mostly white with flecks of black and gray to provide texture. The walls of the cave would have less white and more black as you progress into the tunnel since there would be less and less direct light. I like how your spider blends into the dark background. Creepy!

Keem -- Great work! I love that you borrowed the languid "send him away" pose. Great composition & perspective.

10 October 2004, 02:31 PM
1:30 min more of coloring and computer work, colored on Photoshop

i really liked that theme and i think i am gonna fully color this sketch, may be do some color changes too , any way its just a sketch!

10 October 2004, 04:25 PM
Keem -- the light from the tv looks too intense, like she's staring into a floodlight. I'd suggest a light blue glow along the edges of the tv screen and a similar highlight to characters or items in front of it. BTW, I'm not a mod or anything but you should probably start a new thread for this project in the WIP section. :)

ur absolutely right, i agree with ur openion, and actually i was just tracng my light so that i can trace my high lights and my shadows, actually i am working on it so that i can finalize it and post it in the Galleries and on my website too.
