Painter - 2 hours - Wacom - (used my hand as ref)

10 October 2004, 03:42 PM
Andrewley - absolutely gorgeous! I hate it when you post first, you are a very tough act to follow!

10 October 2004, 04:12 PM
Bah! Andrewley, you had the same idea and executed it a lot better than I did. I am regretting going with a cliche fairy... I guess I am not feeling very creative this morning... probably because I am stuck at work for the whole weekend. Oh well.

This was my first daily sketch, hopefully I will keep up and do these on a regular basis... great practice. All you guys do great work btw.

1.25 hours, Photoshop, Wacom (used my hand for ref)

10 October 2004, 06:30 PM
Cheers Robin - very kind

DigitalSkunkwrx - I expected someone else would do this idea - its not very original. I also painted a fairy but it didn't look right so I did the lady instead. Good work btw

:) Here ya go

10 October 2004, 01:54 AM
Painter 9 Trial is available from Corel's web site, click Painter IX on the main page, then Sneak Peak and you'll get a link to windows and macintosh's version of the trial.

Here's my entry for today, as you can see, I've tried to work my shadows (and realized too late that some highlights are wrong, especially the one on the metal container).

Anyway, 2nd drawing for me since I joined the sketch of the day fun only yesterday :)
OpenCanvas 1.1, something like 45mn, haven"t really payed attention to the clock...

here's the WPE file (

Wanted to draw an ugly woman in the back, speaking to some sort of vendor, telling him something like : " What do you mean when you say I should get the big one ?", then I changed my mind (mainly because it wasn't that funny and because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to draw that situation without confusing the reader).

By the way, you OC pros, is there an easy way to add a background using layers without even caring about other layers ? I mean, if I add a layer to my drawing, and place that layer way down the layer list, and paint it all black, no matter what type of layer I choose (add, substract, etc...) I can't manage to have just exactly the same drawing but with a black background (I mean without altering my already drawn objects' colors). Is that normal, or did I miss something that would help me obtain that effect ?

10 October 2004, 03:57 AM
WOW everyone! Great entries!
PS w/Wacom about 1 hr 45 min.
ilikesoup - funny parody! (1st one) and I love the 2nd one!
HenningK - she's a beauty allright!
lopoly - my Dad would want that ship!
shaitan - very nice, especially the mood
Brötje - you are too hard on yourself - I really like it!
jeroentje - she's fabulous!
Dutchman - nice use of the thimble and magnifying glass to show how small she is!
Baramin - similar idea to mine
berice - OUCH! That's like the saying that there are no ugly women just before the bar closes!

10 October 2004, 07:32 AM
I couldn't believe how fast this charicature went.
Watch the wpe, I am very happy with how quick I got what I wanted. I don't think it is a perfect sketch, but I definately felt the magic at work on this one.
This one was definately more about the Idea than the sketch. ...Oh so fun.
OpenCanvas1.1 :: 35min :: wacom
OpenCanvas.wpe File (

Oh By the way Mr.Goro.... I hope you do this for a living. If not you should really think about it.
Again, speachless.

Thanks you guys,
I will take off the bottom line explaining who it is.
You know how it is when you draw someone else. Everyone sees people differently. Just wanted to make sure that no one missed the joke.

robinayles - I think it is funny that as I look at these I see so many of my Ideas too. For some reason this topic especially. Its kinda spooky.
btw. I like your idea too. I think that it is peculiar how many hands made it into these. Everything seems to be from such a personal perspective. Hmmm.....thats beaty I guess.

Taron - took me a while to see it. Nice!

Jasel - good painting and Idea. Like 'em'

Baramin - Don't think it is possible. The great thing about OC1.1 is that you really have to think ahead , as if it was a real painting. But you still get the speed of digital. Here is my approach.
1. figure out what I want, where it will go, and how it should look. (of course it can chage).
2. Lay in BG colors.
3. make a new layer and sketch out Idea (I sometimes skip this and just start painting, depending on how confident I feel about it). may want to hide BG when doing this.
4. Lay in base colors . ..... and keep painting.
5. As I paint I start turning the opacity of the sketch down, so I can work all the edges out.
6. Sometimes if I need a nice glow (sun/clouds, or Rocket thrust/nuke[misguided heroes]) I will make a layer on top of my BG Layer, make it black . Set it to multiply and use a soft edge brush to pull the light through. It gives a really cool glow look.

I have been posting all of my wpe's so you can check this out.

good luck.

HenningK - love the texture feel. Makes me miss my sketchbook. Very fun.

Good job everyone.

Chris Reid

Thanks for your nice comments! It's encouraging... I still have a lot to learn, and this forum is a great expierence, so I'll try to make one sketch a day before I start college in the middle of October. I'm not aspiring to reach such heights as Taron, Goro (I'm officially in love with your fairy  ), Andrewley, Supervlieg, etc (too many great names...) in such a short time, but I know I'm going to learn loads around here!

10 October 2004, 06:27 PM
Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my question, Chris ! :)

I'll try the method you describe, seen you using it with that earth+moon+rockets sketch (was 2 days ago I think). Thanks a lot for the WPEs you post by the way, but I'm bad at staying focused even when the show's interesting, so I guess I need to play them several times to get any benefits from watching them.
