View Full Version : 3d Character, Keytoon Animation Studio (3D)

Title: 3d Character
Name: Keytoon Animation Studio
Country: Espana
Software: 3ds max

We are Alex Mateo (Alez), Jaime Maestro (TACK) and Jonatan Catalan (Sytron). After years working in different companies and studios we have decided to join our efforts in a same project: Keytoon Animation Studio.
This is our first character in the Studio, his name is Dr. Maxwell. We are in the preproduction of a 3d animation shortfilm called "Maxwell Beach". This image is not for the shortfilm (he will dress beach clothes and sun glasses), this is only a still with "Doc" teaching in his university class ;)

UPDATE: The final image rendered with Maxwell Render (

this is a good work i like it:applause:

09 September 2004, 05:18 PM
looks a lot like larry david of seinfeld and curb your enthusiasm. Good work.

09 September 2004, 05:27 PM
Great character! The rendering and lighting of the piece is very good indeed, the detail in the chalkboard and wood surround works well, as does the quality of light on his skin. Only minor crit is the way the material of his lab coat meets the buttons, which looks slightly odd in places. Look forward to seeing him animated!

09 September 2004, 05:28 PM
niiiice! I like the shaings and the lighting a lot too :D

09 September 2004, 05:34 PM
Excellent modeling and rendering.
Keep up the good work!

09 September 2004, 06:02 PM
I´ve seen this grow and i love it, and knowing what you keytoon guys are up to, seems more exciting even...

Superb work, specially like the lightning...but that comes as no surprise...

I hope this makes the frontpage couse it deserves it :D

09 September 2004, 08:24 PM
Cool , good work :applause:
i love character design

09 September 2004, 08:28 PM
his coat, or whatever it is called, could use some stains and dirt.... should fit him :)

09 September 2004, 08:33 PM
Absolutely gorgeous!
I think he should have some hair on the backs of his hands and fingers, his hands look too pristine.....oh and a pocket protector with some pens hehe
I'm not much of a "fanboy", but this definitely deserves a plug!

09 September 2004, 08:59 PM
The Docter's gesture so~ funny...~~ nicel~~job~~

09 September 2004, 09:09 PM
Wow! What an excellent project. The character feels alive and lightning makes a good ambient. About minor details, I suggest more detail in hands: wrinkles, hair. Clothing also needs a little dirt, some stains, wrinkles... less perfect. Amazing job with the chalkboard.

Anyway my first 5 stars rating go to this job. Congratulations!

09 September 2004, 09:13 PM
Wonderfull work you,ve got there men, congrats, i like a lot that funny expression and the scene mood, can,t wait to see it animated

09 September 2004, 09:16 PM
Incredible, lively character. Nice render, looks like clay.

09 September 2004, 09:17 PM

09 September 2004, 11:56 PM
Great character! I love the lolling tongue :D Is the background CG as well? That chalkboard looks excellent. So is he a just some mad old nice guy or an evil genius? :)

Plugged on the front page for you!

09 September 2004, 12:12 AM
Congrats on the front page guys!

Maybe is the time to show us some making of, some wires and stuff...

09 September 2004, 02:32 AM
Excellent lighting. Great job.

09 September 2004, 02:36 AM
Thats so damn great! I like it so much., very nice job you've done there!

09 September 2004, 02:50 AM
Nice Render too!

09 September 2004, 03:01 AM
nice character and rendering.

Only 2 crits:

-His Right arm could be weighted so that the forearm deforms better where it meets the bicep. Right now it is losing volume.

-There is a bit of a tangent where his left hand's finger meets the body. It might be a good idea to either hide a bigger part of the hand behind his body or bring it closer to the camera, overlapping the body.

buen trabajo y suerte :)

09 September 2004, 03:36 AM
really like this one, the face, especially the mouth to me, is most impressive

09 September 2004, 03:38 AM

09 September 2004, 06:51 AM
really good work love the proportions of the character really good face and hands...
going to your site now... can't wait to see more of the character...

good luck

09 September 2004, 06:55 AM
My only comment on this would be the glasses. You could tone down the reflection so you can see more of the eyes, they are a little hidden under the brow and behind the glasses. It makes it hard to read the eyes so to speak. You could also add a little highlight in there, to make them more alive. Eyes are the windows of the soul and at the moment the windows are hidden :) Don't get me wrong, it's still a great work, but I think bringing out the eyes a little would really help making it even more awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing your animation!

Heh, in the time it took for me to write this message you got one page of replies :D And I agree with previous poster, wires please! :)

09 September 2004, 06:58 AM
i like very much your character because i find him easy to "read" although i agree with the comment about adding hair to his hand to be congruent with his face and age, may be even a wrinkle or two could live over there, who knows (well, YOU kow, of course, haha)...and may be it´s just me but his right ear reminds me mr. potatoe ears. :)

09 September 2004, 07:25 AM
Congratulations on the fantastic work! Excelent character, pose and lightning!
Mucha suerte con vuestra aventura!

09 September 2004, 07:43 AM

09 September 2004, 08:11 AM

09 September 2004, 10:36 AM
I really really like/love it!!!

It kinda brings me back to my childhood... Let me explain: this scientist gives me the same
feeling to look at as the scientist in "Maniac Mansion : the day of the tentacle",
with who I had lots of fun... hehe

Keep up the good work.

09 September 2004, 10:41 AM
Bravo! Inspired work!

I see powerful character design and modeling, but most of all - (based on viewing the stills) - I see that a great comedic personality has been created - and that's what it is all about!!!

it's work like this that makes us all try a little harder!

Every success in your work

Gord MacDonald

09 September 2004, 10:48 AM

The skin shader looks perfect for such a toon character.

09 September 2004, 10:53 AM

Cool char.
But I think he have some troubles with his bones. It seems they were cutten
away. Particulary his fingers look like they made of plasticine. And maybe there is some troubles with his elbow.
The material of the blackboard would look better if it will be solid black or some other solid color.
However I like the char, rendering and colors

10 October 2004, 12:32 AM

Fantastic detail in the mouth, Especially the 'non' perfect teeth!

10 October 2004, 04:25 PM
I had seen this already, excellent job guys.

just being picky, considering the detail you've put on his face, wrinkles, etc, I see the hands slightly simple. I'd love to see some wrinkles on his fingers, so the whole thing had pretty much the same amount of detail.

can't wait to see what you end up with, really. good luck.

un saludo.

10 October 2004, 08:06 PM
The deatail in this project, right down to the teeth and facial hair is incredible. I hope with practice to get this good. Keep up the good work!

I'm curious if any of you Keytoon guys can comment on the Maxwell renderer? I see from the maxwell site that you guys have been using it! I'm assuming that if you're doing animation with it, it must be fairly fast? And how is it with animation? I'm assuming good!? lol.. so yeah, I'm really curious about the speed.

10 October 2004, 01:31 AM

Excellent images! Is the Maxwell render alpha out yet?! When can I start using it?

The Alpha is out, I just ordered and downloaded it today. I'll be giving it a test drive over the next few days to see if I like it. It looks as simple, if not more simple to use than Arnold did in the way of controlls. One of the reasons I like Arnold was it's simplicity in use, no pages upon pages of parameters to confuse me. Maxwell does indeed liik like a spartans dream

As a lot of people knows, Maxwell render is revealed. We can show finally Dr. Maxwell rendered with Maxwell! :D

Here there are some images rendered with Maxwell beta... ( render time - 10min )

And finally some comparisons, new images with maxwell render vs vray images...

I hope it likes you ;)

Best Regards!

This guy is hilarious...I love it. Great work on the chalkboard, the chalk looks really realistic on the board. I also think the lab coat is modeled really well!
