I started this model a while ago, but then I never finished it. Now I've started up on it again and I'll need some critiques.
The goal for this project is to make it look as photoreal as possible.
I'm using poly modeling in 3ds max 5.
You can view other WIP shots of the model here...
Most of the old WIP shots have been removed. I will only post the current model and replace the old images with the new ones.
This is the most recent update image for the model.

looks very good, by now the only critic is the stomach area, the abdominals look a little boxy. I like the head.

Yeah, I'm going to randomize the model when I finish it with soft select. I already did a small test with it and it looks pretty good.

The horns seem to go out a bit much, giving a kind of silly pigtails or big ears look. I think they would look more threatening if they went back much more. Most predators have a very aerodynamic look, plus its more dramatic.

I made his neck a bit longer
made his abs stick out a little more instead of going in like before.
Added some hands
Started work on the lower body
Made the legs longer
Attached the torso and legs
Moved the shoulders in a little.
Remodeled the connection of the pec. to shoulder.
Now I'm getting exited, it's really taking the shape of what I had in mind.
Still needs a lot of work though.

Added muscles to the trunk of the horse body.
Now I'm going to start on the legs.

exceptional model i really like it, the only thing that bugs me, is he seems a little short, i think you could make him seem a little more powerful if you made him taller from the waist, its like, try to imagine him without the horse part and just with legs, it seems he would be a little short, considering how wide he is, im talking he has mass! maybe im wrong and it would mess up the proportions, but.. something to think about, anyway way better than i could do, just my opinion, but looks really really good

just my opinion, i think it would look cooler (continuing on from my last blabber) if you raised the human/devil part higher and joined the spine to the horse part right at the lowest of the lower back, so where it would turn into his butt, it instead turns into the horse parts shoulder muscle, again it might not look right though, just an idea, and again GREAT MODEL

OK, I made him taller.
I stretched the torso up and the legs down. What do you think?

I like him this tall. I think the hind legs should be more powerfull, they do not convincingly support his massive body at a fast run to my eye...

The height is good :thumbsup: I agree, I think he looks better like this.
And I'm going to detail the legs today, look for an update later in the day.

A small update
Stretched the back of the horse body.
expanded the rib cage side ways.
added an extra muscle to the buttoks
made the hooves
Added spikes on the back of the fore arms.
pulled the front end of the hip bone forward
Moved the hip bone in towards the spine to round out the back end.
Moved the top of the butt down a little to make it more pointed.
Edited the abs a little. Rounded them out some.
And I moved the lower part of the thigh forward some so it looks more realistic.
I'll see if I can get some more work done by tonight.

I haven't worked on him very much the last couple days, but here is a small update.
I made the shoulder and butt muscles larger.
I moved his abs forward.
I still haven't done anything with the legs, I'm trying to get the shoulder area right, but so far I'm not happy with the way it looks. http://www.chemicaldust.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif

I have another thread for this same character over at http://www.chemicaldust.com/ and Fabricio Torres was kind enough to do a quick paint over for me to point out some things that should be changed. I think he did and awesome job.
So....I edited him real quick to match the paint over. It took less than 5 minutes. So I just got the basic shape of the paint over.
I like this look better.

I just think there is something strange with the proportions ... maybe the horse body, and the abdomen of the "human part" is a little short. In the abdomen, you can put it upper, and use the begin of horse body like the Hip of the humam body and not like a part of the abdomem, like is now... And about the horse part, I think you can simple strech, to be a little large.
I don't know if you understand me, but I can try explain in a different way, if you want.

Looking really good. My critique would be that the melding of the two bodies isn't convincing at the moment, we really need to see their musculature working together...some of the muscles in the back need to span across the division between horse and man, and same with the front...(you could use those two front muscles of the horse that you think look like nuts as the bottom of an elongated abdomen...) I agree with the horses shoulders being the hips of the human, it helps weld the two together more seemlessly...I think thats how others have done their versions as well...

OK how about this...
I have the lower abs stretched down.
Then the 2 long muscles running along side would be like your neck muscles, then at the bottom where the 2 balls are, it's more like pectorals.
then on the side and back I have the Gluteus Medius on the side and the Gluteus Maximus on the back interlocking with the horses shoulder muscles.
then the 2 long vertical muscles in the lower back blend in to the horse body's spine all the way back to the tail.

OK I finally started working on him again http://www.chemicaldust.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif. I edited his torso some and stretched him out too, he's taller and longer. He doesn't look stubby any more.
I'll try to update more often like I was doing before.

I had started a centaure myself a long time ago, to help a friend who had the exact trouble as you have connecting the two bodies...
Yur hips are stil way too large ( horse ) and the torso (low part of humanoid body) should continue a little bit more down on the horse part ( hope im clear enough ;) )

OK, things I like:
The proportions of the horse half to the humanoid half are great. I love the curve you put on the back of the horse...Brilliant! :thumbsup: . I like the big hooves and the editing to the upper torso. I like the top of the head and the huge horns are much better. I also like the thick wrists, it makes the hands look more powerful.
I love it...
Things that I think I will still edit:
Motaro has a long face, like the butlers in looney toons. So I would stretch it down some more to keep it closer to the original look. The triceps need to be thicker to match the mass of the torso. The legs need more mass, they look a bit weak still. I think maybe widen his hips a tini bit more. Maybe make the horse half a bit taller also. The Mortal Kombat 3 Motaro has calves on his front legs, so add those in. The lower abs where it merges with the front of the horse looks boxy, so add more muscles or round it out some more.
I think that's it.
Just some minor changes.
I can see what My problem was before, I was trying to keep things looking too true to real life. Editing some things to work better together like you did didn't even cross my mind till now.
What you did with this model is outstanding, it totally opens my eyes for future works. I can't thank you enough. :)

I used some of the ideas you gave me and I think they helped. I'm happy with the proportions now.
Or maybe I've just been starring at it too long. :shrug:
Anyway I'm just gonna move on to the muscle detail for the legs now. The proportions look good to me and I'm pretty sick of tweaking it. :rolleyes:
Actually, looking at it now, I think I'll just make the head a little bigger.

I edited the torso some more.
Rounded out the shoulders, pecs and the rib cage arch.
I added a small indentation where the clavicle, shoulder and pectoral meet.
Widened the rib cage, rounded out the ab muscles some more and a little bit of remodeling on the pectoral and the rib cage arch.

Great Model :D~!
Im not sure if your working on really detailing it out but...
-The pecs dont have a nipple.
-The hands dont seem to have any detail what so ever..
-The shoulder muscle I think would look better if you add those 3 muscles groves into it.. um if I knew what they were called it would be easier.. The thing above the bisped.
- He is missing muscles that are suppose to be below his pecs. where you seem to have made this hard rib cage show. although those could be it but it looks odd right now..
-The back of the forearm I think would look better if you bring out those muscles that are located there. I mean this guy is ripped and they should be showing.
-The pec muscles stretch from the shoulder bone and its werid have u have a kind of straight grove there that doesn't seem to go any where....
Sorry I forgot what he was suppose to look like ...my comments are towards a human being XD.

OK, now I added the muscles to the fore arm. fixed his ribs so they show more like in a comic book. Added a little more muscle def. to the back and shoulders. I flattened out the split between the pectorals, gave him some nipples, added more bone definition to his hands, added some muscle def. to the shoulders. And finally I got some work done on the front legs.

Something just doesn't look right (or maybe it's just my eye.)
Look at the model from the side, and cover everything except for the humanoid body and the front horse legs. Doesn't it look awkward? Sorry I can't explain it any better. Maybe the horse body is a bit overwhelmed; mess with the proportion and see if you can get a better look

Nails on fingers are suppose to be curved not flat :O
I think the hand needs work.. the hand has quite an arc to it when you put it out like that...
um its hard for me to explain the other stuff about the hand....too bad I can't just show ;p
maybe I will...

I got the back legs almost finished, I refined the muscles of the front leg. I totally remodeled the butt muscles. Added a vein on his rib cage and stretched his legs down a little.
I think I'll have all the modeling done tomorrow. :buttrock:

A quick test animation for the face.
I noticed that the wrinkles aren't as easy to define as I had hoped, so I'm gonna have to add more geo. to the face.
I'll add 1 more loop around the mouth area and some lines at the outside edges of the eyes for some wrinkles. A couple loops on the eye brow ridge too, it's a little boxy.

I think it would be better to make bump map that changes depending on the blendshape used or a displacement map.
More Geo sucks ;_;

I think he's saying the face is too relaxed. You've already heard this from me. Basically the modeling is done, now give him some character.

The very first animation test.
I haven't started setting up the vertex weights yet. I just messed around a little with the envelopes.
I still have a ton of cleaning up to do on him.
Sorry, I can't put big files online, I don't have much room in my host.
Also the model is not finished yet, I still have to make his armor and textures, but I need to have him moving today. I have to show it to someone....
