View Full Version : PA Challenge - Character - muckywetnoodle

After nuclear and biological warfare has ravaged the planet, few human and animal lifeforms remain. The Anteater is a human remnant born into this world and fitted with a custom breathing and bug collection/processing unit. This humanoid character wanders the dry desert landscape, prying up rocks and rubble in search of insects, most often cockroaches, for their high water and protein content. His staff is fitted with a large blade used for the prying and also doubles as a weapon should conflict take place. Not the brightest of beings, his only armor is a cup and his large upper-body, honed from daily labor in his search for insect life, serves as a menacing presence to any thinking of challenging him.
So here are a couple designs for him so far. One kinda bare-@$$, the other with gloves and pants and more normal sized hands. All his clothing and items are white to reflect as much of the beating sun as possible. His skin will probably be the weathered leathery variety. I'm still working on the bug processing unit which mounts to permanent fixtures on his back. Let me know which you prefer. :) I did this in painter so it's easy to make changes and add things.
and a slightly larger detail
Thanks to Brom (http://www.bromart.com/) for the character inspiration!

I'm curious to see, but your pic didn't load.
02 February 2002, 07:26 AM
Hey Mucky I'm really loving this style and sketch bud, it reminds me of how I like my own proprotions :) The glove one is better imo but this is an awesome concept so far, let's see how far you can take it in 3D...
02 February 2002, 07:35 AM
i think you should have a glove on only one hand (the left hand with the spear), and keep the pants for sure.
maybe you should add some more detail aroudn the eyes? and maybe have some more tubes coming out the back of the head
can't wait for the 3d version.

This is a particularly wonderful design. I'm very fond of the large hand style and the low slung head. kinda lends itself to the s-curves that I try to keep in my drawings.
he needs a plume of hair or something to counter that snorkel.
Just my suggestions.
-stop stoking the fire, my ass is roasted.

Awesome! Thanks a lot for the feedback. I'll try to post an update tom.
JoeCosman -thanks! I'll probably try messing with the hand scale once I have the model roughed out. I'll see what works.
Krugar-thank you also. I like the one glove idea. I think I'm gonna add some rippage to the silk-like material of the upper glove as well.
lildragon-Thank you sir! I tend to add a lot once I start building. I'll try to keep it under control though :)

02 February 2002, 01:41 AM

02 February 2002, 11:44 AM
Wow! I really like the sketch, and the model is looking great so far. Love that attention to minute detail!
02 February 2002, 04:17 AM
I'm gonna finish up the gloves today as well as the pants and boots. I still have another round of work to do on the figure to tweak proportions and definition. C & C welcome!
Thanks alot for the comments also. Forgot to respond.
02 February 2002, 04:39 AM
I am loving the proportions my friend. and I like how you do justice to the sketch . . .
02 February 2002, 12:43 AM
Here's another update. Working on the pants and boots right now.
02 February 2002, 01:39 AM
You have some of the best geometry layouts I have seen. great work! I love the shoulders, especially the chest area.
02 February 2002, 02:58 AM
uau muckywetnoodle!!! It's amazing!! excelent!!
Very clean modelling! Great concept! The proportions are awesome.
I'm very impatient to see more!!
02 February 2002, 05:12 AM
I'm loving it man, we seem to love those odd proportions :D they're fun to work with huh? keep going bud we need to see a smoothed version
looking at the hands, I would adjust the first digits in the middle and ring finger, also make the middle finger a lil longer
02 February 2002, 05:49 AM
Cool, thanks for the comments guys! I've been doing a lot of erasing and reworking of the mesh to push myself away from the extruded look. I agree about the hand proportions. Once I get the pants and boots done, I'll be tweaking the proportions overall as well. I'm not too happy with the stomach and neck yet. I have some detailing to do on the torso as well for it to smooth properly so I haven't posted any smoothed versions yet. Coming soon... Here is a smoothed pic of the hand since it's closest to done.
03 March 2002, 02:01 PM
I still need to work on the torso and pants before I rig him.
Lildragon, pabloz and Joe, thank you! Still going....
03 March 2002, 02:15 PM
Mucky, great modelling, Nice work on the muscle definition and the wrinkles in the clothing... :) Nice mask too
The only thing, maybe you could define the elbow a bit more, make it stand out more...
03 March 2002, 04:27 PM
That is so great!Fantastic modeling! He is qoing to be perfect when textured. If you dont have time to texture him until 8th texture him later and post.Peeeeeeeease!:)
03 March 2002, 04:54 PM
very good mesh and concept !
maybe the head need to be detach more respect the body ?
03 March 2002, 05:42 PM
I added more stuff and did some fine tuning. I need to rig him and break up the symmetry going on right now too. Having fun on ol' bug sucker.
Let me know what ya think!
patrick Fodéré-Thanks, that's a good point about the head. It's something I've been thinking about but haven't really come up with an answer for yet. Been thinking about what the head would look like under there too. :)
Cgkoko-thx! Glad you like it.
Hmura-Thank you also. I'll be tweaking joints when rigging. I'm kinda curious how the elbows will work.
03 March 2002, 05:54 PM
I would like the head bigger, but maybe wouldn't be so original model.
I suggest you add more "violence" in the model. Maybe a weapon more killer... See medieval stuff.
I hope you texture it before the deadline!
03 March 2002, 05:55 PM
It's a really great original character!
I like it a lot...
Just 2 critics: The thumbs are strange!
And feets are maybe not enought detailed...
But the rest is so perfect!
Proportions are good,all is ok!
Come on! Add textures...And finish it!
You 've got the time!(Just don't sleep! :D :D )
03 March 2002, 07:02 PM
Looks awesome and the sketch is great too. I know you posted earlier mesh shots but could we get one of the whole body? I hope you get him textured by the deadline, it looks sweet!
03 March 2002, 12:31 AM
Yem yam-Thanks, here is a pic of the wireframe:
Totitch-Thank you also! I need to touch up the fingers a bit too. You just had to mention texturing too :D I don't see that getting done. Maybe some basic colors. Kind of a busy week ahead.
pabbloz-Thank you too. I am probably going to hold off on texturing for now short of colors. I want to take my time and hand paint him. I've been thinking about how to embellish his weapon some. I think I'll add some stuff to the handle. I'll mess with it tonight.
03 March 2002, 12:45 PM
Very cool. I'm jealous...
03 March 2002, 02:38 PM
love the proportions man !
03 March 2002, 08:31 AM
Thanks for the compliments :)
Here is my final update. I built the skeleton and skinned the character but still have to assign all the DOFs and adjust deformers and skin displacements so the movement right now is still pretty crude.
