- I really like the fish and the penguin.
- The frog looks a little out of place with the other images though.
- The smoking buzzards make me laugh.

09-16-2004, 03:07 AM
Thanks man, glad you like em :)

Yeah I agree about the frog. It was the first render in this series I did. I tackled it differently so it does stand out a bit. Thanks again man.

Here's a few wires and screens of some of the animals

09-16-2004, 03:16 AM
:buttrock: :buttrock:

wooooo the fish and frog renders i like the most
fish one has a good style to it

09-16-2004, 03:18 AM
That's awesome stuff!

Very Disney style,, love it

the frog in the pond is the best of all!

09-16-2004, 03:35 AM
great work as usual !
love the buzzards especially

09-16-2004, 03:48 AM
Hey thanks!

The fish and frog are probably my favorite too, I loaded them full of facial expressions. Dreamtalks did an awesome facial rig on the frog, and lisa lewis did an awesome facial setup on the fish. They are a blast to animate.

Theres a few people animating these animals too. I had some emails asking me if they could animate with them. Ryan Hagen (Remi) is animating the vulture, and I believe Dreamtalks did some animation with the fat frog for his demo reel.

Thanks again!

09-16-2004, 03:53 AM
Beautiful work PiSong :) I especially love the renders...

09-16-2004, 04:31 AM

Thanks so much everyone, you all rock :buttrock:

kretin: thanks dude, I've always been a fan of your character designs so your reply means alot

deg: thanks man, glad you like them

maud'dib: hehe thanks, I always like to add that kick of personality into my little critters. They seem so much cooler when their pissed.

Liseelulu: Thanks! And thanks so much again for rigging my animals. You do the coolest rigs. Especially your facial setups. You rock!!

Davey: Thanks man, really appreciate your reply. Let's hope I can do some more designs. Modellers block sucks :P

Ecleposs: Man your work totally rocks. Love your arabian market. Thanks for the reply man. I appreciate it.

Thanks guys

09-16-2004, 09:52 AM
You are truly an inspiration Pi! i just freakin' love your syle and your characters rock!

I think you should put out a coffee table book of all your characters.

How'd i miss the cgchoice award?? Congratulations my friend!

09-16-2004, 12:01 PM
Amazing work, Pi. You know that, I know, think most of people around know it too .)

Still the Bat is missing in this animal presentation.

09-16-2004, 12:06 PM
Thanks man :)

ahh the bat. Yes He is finished, surfaced. However still needs a rig. In the end Jonny (Kretin) was kind enough to offer to rig the bat for me. Jonny rigged the infamous "martin bird" so I'm really excited about checking out his rig

BTW, you can see a little render of the bat on my splash screen on my website as well as these animals in this thread.

Sorry theres not much else there, its going through a redesign.

09-16-2004, 01:57 PM
Dude these all suck and you know it.

Stop holding out!

Just kidding mate! These are some beautiful little critters and I can't wait to see what happens when the cat is let out of the bag? :deal:

Keep rocking my man!!! :buttrock:

09-16-2004, 04:31 PM
Yep I remember these on LWG... love them especially the smoking buzzard :)

09-16-2004, 06:53 PM
your thread finaly got the lot of stars .. that your work deserve !! :buttrock:

09-17-2004, 12:22 AM
Perfect characters Pisong. I'd kill to animate those!

09-17-2004, 12:24 AM
Great clean meshes! The character design and faces are so simple, yet show a lot of expression. Do we have animations yet, or did I miss them somewhere? :D

09-17-2004, 12:27 AM
Terrific work. Extremely clean meshes. I get so sick of reading on and on about how Lightwave's modeler sucks since it doesn't have ngons and edge-weighting. Your work proves that when in the hands of a capable artist Lightwave's modeling is very capable. Keep it up.

09-17-2004, 12:29 AM
:bounce: Wow, I really like the fish, they look like they could belong in Finding Nemo. As soon as I saw them the voice of the puffer fish from the tank came into my head. Wonderful Work!

09-17-2004, 01:09 AM
Great work man. I love your style:applause:

09-17-2004, 01:12 AM
wow these characters are really represented well. the scenes themselves say so much to be still shots. i was totally fooled and thought they were hand rendered but to find out you did this in 3dsmax was a shock to me. especially since i am not a 3d guy. checked out your site also nice work all around

09-17-2004, 01:25 AM
I'm inspired by your work. I'm very impressed at the simplicity, yet expessiveness of your characters.
( ...I can't figure out which I like best. )
I think you rate as one of the most inspirational character artist on this site.

09-17-2004, 01:32 AM
work like this makes me want to work even harder to make better models.. now i put pi in the catogorey witn remi,kertin,proton,xtrm3d,policarpo and allthe other "cartoon fell" modeler..

09-17-2004, 01:40 AM
Wonderful character!! always like your style... inspired me indeed, simple yet beautiful and unique :applause:

09-17-2004, 01:44 AM
Well you know I enjoy your characters, Pisong! :)

It's hard to pick a favourite, but I'd have to say the vultures. But they're all great with lots of personality. That frog looks very unimpressed with his lot in life :)

It's nice to see that you do work on your shading too, to create variations on different types of skin, etc instead of using plain shading on everything. I know it can be tricky to draw the line as to how realistic/toony surfaces for toon characters should be, but I think you've found a really good balance - giving enough hint about the different surface qualities without trying to make them realistic. It suits the characters and helps to give them a toony tangibility :)

Now I've said it before and I'm going to say it again... put all of them into a single scene and do something crazy with them!

09-17-2004, 01:57 AM
wow these characters are really represented well. the scenes themselves say so much to be still shots. i was totally fooled and thought they were hand rendered but to find out you did this in 3dsmax was a shock to me. especially since i am not a 3d guy. checked out your site also nice work all around
That's Lightwave Kansai, not that there's anything wrong with max.
You holding out on me Pi???? :scream:

09-17-2004, 02:18 AM
I wanna see these characters moving around. They look like a lot of fun to animate.

Do you have any video to show?

09-17-2004, 02:36 AM
Congrats once again!

09-17-2004, 02:51 AM
Wow thanks! You all rock

Imatk: Thanks dude, cool that you remember them from LWG

xtrm3d: hahaha... its about time you posted somthing too! Hows DNA??

Sheep: Dude, if you want to animate them. Email me ;)

Erilaz: I personally have been working on a few animations for a reel. Nothing to show for it yet. I did have some tests up on my server that I could of shown, however my host was hacked and I lost all my files off my server. Just started rebuilding :)

gabe28: Thanks man, yeah LW's modeller rocks :)

dcp: haha funny you say that. I made the fish shortly after watching finding nemo

jjburton: Thanks dude. I've always loved your work too so its cool to see a reply from you.

Kansai: No 3DSMax, Lightwave. BUt thanks, glad you like them

Vegan: Wow what a cool compliment. Thanks so much man.

xasty: hahaha thanks dude. I finally joined the ranks?

Filik: thanks man. wow so cool to hear I inspired someone else for a change

Leigh: lol I think the vultures are a pretty popular favorite. Have to say I had so much fun making them too. Thanks for the comments on the surfacing also. Comming from you that's a very very cool thing to say.

And about the full scene with all the animals. I still need to think of a scenario where we would find all these various animals in the same habitat :P

Carbon: Thanks dude. Yeah you know its Lightwave haha

Floyd. Nah sorry dude. No animation cllips to show yet. I've had lots of requests if people can animate them so hopefully we will both see somthing soon

Carbon(Again): hahaha yeah just saw that not long ago. Totally cool :buttrock:

09-17-2004, 02:54 AM
And about the full scene with all the animals. I still need to think of a scenario where we would find all these various animals in the same habitat :P

Pi...these are so Hurley!!

You RULE!

09-17-2004, 03:22 AM
the renders just blow me away... i mean great characters, but the; the fish looked as good as nemo to me (or atleast ridiculously close)

09-17-2004, 03:31 AM
Front page! cool stuff as usual Pi :)

09-17-2004, 04:38 AM
LOVE the buzzards! Awesome.

09-17-2004, 04:39 AM

09-17-2004, 05:03 AM

09-17-2004, 05:27 AM

09-17-2004, 05:32 AM

09-17-2004, 05:52 AM
wicked! cool work, I love these cool pixar renders ... thanks for the desktop images ,, just what i need for inspiration!

09-17-2004, 06:55 AM
sweet great work!!

some nice inspiration!:) i'm also working on some cartoon fish, frogs, bird characters at the moment for some kiddies music videos!!

09-17-2004, 07:12 AM
I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but:

The way your characters are lit, they seem to be self-illuminating... Try concentrating the light from one or two directions, and your models should receive more volume.

09-17-2004, 07:38 AM
great work as usual !
love the buzzards especiallyyou took the words right out of my mouth =)

keep it up man, you're doing great =)

09-17-2004, 07:45 AM
Haha, those are great, almost made me laugh out loud in the comp lab :) I'd like to see a few variations on the birds, like different expressions, sizes etc. Otherwise it's pretty much all great

09-17-2004, 07:56 AM
Thanks :)

Jason: Make sure you let me know when you show off your birds fish and frogs. NDA providing ;)

gagn: The self illuminating was intentional. However I like your idea alot. I could try toning the illumination down a bit and allow a more directional light source to shine through. Thanks man :buttrock:

Taharez, Heres a few head tests I did when I finished modelling the birds head.

It's still not alot of expression but its more than what you have seen currently :)

The bird wasn't rigged for the renders, so I didn't spend too much time with his expressions. For future projects I'd like to get full range of motion out of that beak of his :)

Thanks again

09-17-2004, 08:42 AM
ok, i wrestled up some better wires :)

Thanks again everyone.

09-17-2004, 09:46 AM

Love "the look". Very Pixarish. You and Kretin are probably me favorite 2 artists right now. Awesome. Thank you for sharing.

-Mike Pauza

09-17-2004, 03:40 PM
wow thanks guys. Really happy you like these critters :buttrock:

Blackhorse: No more animals :P I will do some more shortly. I need to do a few other designs to freshen my mind. I used to have a ton of renders on my site, but when that went down I lost all my files. Need to reupload everything and redesign the site.

xtrm3d: ahh cool to hear your having fun at DNA! Are you working on Neutron or a film? Can you tell us that :P Is your family over with you yet?

Mike: thanks man, so glad you like the designs. And wow what a cool compliment. Now I just have to make sure the next designs are as good haha.

Thanks again to everyone who has replied, I really appreciate your comments :buttrock:

09-17-2004, 03:55 PM

09-18-2004, 12:56 AM
The characters are really wonderful, so expressive. I only wish that one of them had the larger eye on the other side- or is that a style issue with you (like a trademark).

09-18-2004, 08:54 AM
Wow thanks so much everyone. Makes me really happy to see people like this style of work :)

Sinecruist. The different sized eyes are a little tradmark signature thing I do with my animals :p

For humans, I have been making one pupil larger than the other also :)

Thanks again everyone

09-18-2004, 12:52 PM
The Frog Rocks! It's his subtle look that makes you think, he just did something and it ain't good!
I think he's the best!

Rock on!

09-18-2004, 02:45 PM

09-18-2004, 03:23 PM
Looks awesome. Very nice job...the frog rules! :scream:

09-18-2004, 07:25 PM
Beautiful characters. what can you tell us how you go about designing the character? how you work?

09-18-2004, 09:19 PM
Fantastic, I really love your critters, especially the green fish and the frog. I am not a modeler or animator(wish I could do it!), but I love coming here to look at all the great models and animations. Really good stuff, keep it up. :)

09-19-2004, 12:21 AM
Very nice...I realy like 'em :)

Very stylish-funny-lovely. I can write here every single nice word :D !

congrats for the frontpage btw!

09-19-2004, 12:50 AM

A while back, I created a buzzard and frog character myself.

Your's and mine should meet! ;) (

 Coooooooooooooolll.
Fine colour correcion, nice models and good render............

09-24-2004, 02:12 PM
Wow thanks everyone! woohoo

As for designing the animals or characters. I really just like to look at the animals natural personality. I often see animals as being really pissed off with the world they live in, and their lack of control over it. I often like to bring this out. Other times I like to humanize the animals by putting a cigarette in their mouths, or given them human like emotions.

As for the structure of the animals. I try to stay pretty true to the original animals, just add my own bits for flavour :D

Wesball: Dude those rock. Especially love the frog. You have a really cool illustrative style

Thanks again to everyone else who replied. And to cgtalk for the frontpage spot and award.

You all rock :buttrock:

09-28-2004, 02:04 PM
really cool characters - love your style!

best wishes piranya

09-29-2004, 06:24 AM
Great work!!!
But the illumination and shading of the vultures is really impressive :applause: Just two questions:
Did you use Global Illumination for that image?
Which is its render time?
Really nice! :)

09-29-2004, 07:56 AM
Thanks :)

For the vultures there is no GI. Just the different colour lights set to higher intensities and a very slight glow to the vultures surface.

Two area lights, and a few point lights.

09-29-2004, 07:24 PM
These are so wonderful! Very comical and expressions convey a lot of information!

David

09-30-2004, 05:19 AM
Ha! Wow! that is more impressive yet :applause:
You should consider to make a tutorial about this

10-15-2004, 11:12 AM
Hello again Pi3141...I just read through this entire thread and felt compelled to mention how notably humble you come across in your responses. Respect

Oh yeah and 'course your creatures are mental. I especially dig your explanation of how they came to be.

10-15-2004, 11:23 AM
this is great!
you managed to capture both cartoonish and character personallity.
id love to c more of you work...

10-20-2004, 07:54 AM
wow thanks everyone :) I'm really happy you guys like the animal characters. I'm working on a few more designs in a similar style but with humans so hopefully I'll have more to post soon.

Thanks again, I really love the support.

11-05-2004, 06:06 AM
These are really great, I particularly like the vultures. With the exception of the fish, who seem outright angry, your animals have similar, irritated faces which deffinitely suit the personalities of frogs and vultures.

11-10-2004, 03:57 AM
love the frog and the vultures.. really creative

11-18-2004, 12:01 AM
nice models, good character design. the onyl thing is i think the light on teh frog is too strong. but the model looks great

11-19-2004, 09:16 PM
Like this. The vultures are really great,so fun and troublemaker looking.

11-28-2004, 10:34 PM
