View Full Version : PA Challenge - character - lildragon
02 February 2002, 08:13 PM
Heya guys, it's great to see some very good and early entries, I'm really looking forward to completing this model :)
Ok a lil background.
Kar is a warrior of the Kaloas tribe. Kaloas are peaceful by nature, but now very battle worn by recent wars that unfortunately plagued the land. Such wars caused massive desolation of the lands and inevitably contaminated the earth and air.
The freak appearance of the Kaloas such as their elongated and extreme limbs were caused from extensive experimental radiation poisons leaking into once clean waters.
The Kaloas rely on their quickness and evasion skills, so masterful with melee weapons they find that the use of guns are meant for weaker races such as man.
Kar is one such warrior Kaloa, and he now steps out to aid his tribe and help rebuild what was once their peaceful land.
Ok enough of that here's the concept I'm planning to model. I'm leaning towards his left glove. He has no shoes, that's because they're no shoes comfortable enough to be worn ;), plus their skin at the bottom of their feet protects them from the radiation, but they still need to detoxify their feet every few hours, or their skin starts to react like man's would. He'll have a detox kit on his belt.
02 February 2002, 08:24 PM
sorry guys my host is acting up, you should be able to see the image now
02 February 2002, 08:50 PM
good start and very origional
02 February 2002, 09:12 PM
good start indeed. tho you HAVE to make his helmet connect to somewhere :D that would be awesome.
02 February 2002, 09:28 PM
Cool. I like how you've exaggerating the feet and hands. I think this is the first Alien entry so far. :)
02 February 2002, 11:20 PM
Equinoxx: great idea, will definitely add
MadS: yeh I was going for crazy limbs and a fun challenging character in general, can't wait to see the result in 3D ;) and I do believe you're right about the entry, altho it's still early... thanx again
02 February 2002, 11:31 PM
Wow...this one ought to be a fun challenge to model. Excellent start my friend.
02 February 2002, 12:20 AM
like I said very nice character lil it hard to come up with some origional for this challenage and you got a great start there . good work
02 February 2002, 12:47 AM
I love the design of your character because it s not like the others...
I m waiting to see your wip with interest :)
Good work lil and enjoy...
02 February 2002, 07:38 AM
Taoizm: oh yes and thanx ;)
Dan Dixon: I hope it goes well :) thx
Cédric: yeh I'm waiting to see also heheh :)
now to 3D I go
02 February 2002, 10:53 AM
just blocking it out and nailing down the proprotions, also started some detailing.... crits welcomed
if the above acts up, you can get it here http://www.playazz.com/temp/body.jpg
02 February 2002, 11:13 AM
Ah....proof as to why I think its better for me to stay away from character modeling/design...
I love the concept (I have a thing for characters with big hands), really neat. Cant wait to see what he looks like when you are done..and even further..id love to see you drag out a walk cycle with him...
02 February 2002, 04:12 PM
thx NowInc, I'm definitely making a walk cycle, think of how the Tauren walks in World of Warcraft, (you have to watch the trailer);)
02 February 2002, 08:26 PM
do you have a link buddy? nice start by the way ;)
02 February 2002, 08:38 PM
try this one for the movie >
02 February 2002, 08:40 PM
here you go pascal http://planetmirror.com/pub/blizzard/WoW/movies/WoW-ECTS-2001-CinematicTrailer.avi amazing work by Blizzard as usual, and thx for the crits gents
02 February 2002, 11:18 PM
Allright! Very nice!
Like them feet! Very... big and scary! Love the proportions.
One thing though... wouldn´t he(?) look great in an elegant tail?
02 February 2002, 02:26 AM
looking nice, looking nice. :)
02 February 2002, 05:07 AM
hey i want to see the head of your character NOW hehehe, it can be great :)
02 February 2002, 12:02 PM
I Love the helmet. Is it going to be his only gadget gizmo deal? Perhaps a hip/back pack with a 'gas converter' (I dont know what your dude breathes :p ).
But I really like the almost atlantian mix of natural and man-made bits.
Is that thing on his left shoulder a tattoo ?
02 February 2002, 06:40 PM
Henrik Hörlin: thanx ;) about the tail I was thinking that, an "elegant" like you stated would be something worth investigating, thanx for that :)
Taoizm: thanx bud more on the way ;)
CerberusC: I'm taking a different approach this time around, and leaving the head for last :) well b4 all the accessories
Bug_Eyed_Earl: Yeh he'll have more gadgetry once finished ;) he maybe tribal but they're an advanced race :D about the thingy on his left shoulder, yeh it's going to be a tattoo tho not that scrrible :)
thanx guys more renders on their way in a few minutes...
02 February 2002, 06:55 PM
ok Just blocking in some details and adding more refine muscle structures... if you have any comments are questions feel free to ask....
That's it until after work :)
sorry 56k modem users, the file size is a bit high for you guys...
02 February 2002, 07:58 PM
I am in awe! Not only is this a great concept (and awesome feet!!!!) but you guys (the big boys on this forum) model so fast!!!!!!!!
02 February 2002, 09:04 PM
sing with me now....He's a supa' freak... whooo-hooo :D
Looking good pal. I really like the way the muscle structure is coming along. Maybe a little more detail around the toenail though. After the great lead in they sort of fall a little flat.
02 February 2002, 10:28 PM
damn thats really looking good.....
02 February 2002, 12:40 AM
the Rev.: thanx bud :), as for modeling fast is good but not really important in this challenge, keep that in mind ;)
Taoizm: I'm singing check me out http://188.8.131.52/forums/images/smilies/sing.gif http://184.108.40.206/forums/images/smilies/guitarist.gif heheh gracias mi amigo, the toes will be more detailed for sure, I'm just all over the place here trying to grasp the form better :)
Titan Gracias ;)
Some more updates coming tonight/tomorrow, and I'll be most likely starting the head this weekend...
02 February 2002, 09:02 PM
Some more updates....
- I've added some temporary hands as I was getting tired of seeing the stumps ;)
- refined the detail a bit more on the muscles
- And most important I started the armour ;) don't worry to much about the lil hoops on the chest as of yet, it's there for a lil surprise, plus the one on the right will be gone once finished... stay tuned
02 February 2002, 09:14 PM
I'm lovin the armor my friend.
and ya know the rest ;)
02 February 2002, 09:33 PM
Cool stuff lildragon:) I like the way you did the armour and muscles on this character - very nice:)
02 February 2002, 11:32 PM
Equinoxx:thanx bud, below are some closeups
ether::) thanx ether, I'm having alot of fun with this actually, and I've posted some closeups below... I really hope you're deciding on joining in the fray... ;)
- some minor updates and a closeup of the armour, I had to make the loop thingie swivel, so some of you should have an idea what it's meant for ;)
02 February 2002, 11:56 PM
really nice.. love the muscle definition... i think its looking really good..
just one thing though.. from the back view.. the ankles look a little streched... like bent clay..
02 February 2002, 03:09 AM
thanx oozeballz(funny name :)) yeh one of my biggest challenges for myself is to make believable muscles since he's not going to be covered up but too much... I'm still learning tho, about the ankels yeh I agree, I'll fix that thanx... and here's a lil test I was playing with.... thanx for the rig Cemre
I'll be modeling all this weekend most likely
02 February 2002, 07:59 AM
Lookin good man, There's only one thing so far that kinda bugs me and it's the fact that there's no way he could stand up. The part of his feet that touches the ground is to far forward. He would just fall backwards. And I think his wrists are a bit too.... thick :) That is of course IMO.
Handsome fella though.
02 February 2002, 08:37 AM
[There's only one thing so far that kinda bugs me and it's the fact that there's no way he could stand up. The part of his feet that touches the ground is to far forward. He would just fall backwards. And I think his wrists are a bit too.... thick]
I disagree. from the looks of it the legs will work just fine... especially when he is running full speed, digging those talons in!. as for the wrists. I think they are pretty cool, besides maybe the nuclear survivors need to eat lots of spinach. Anyway I just didn't want to see you change the wrists I love them and gives him a unique style. Great work man, now if I can just get on with my own entry...;)
02 February 2002, 02:41 PM
you and shaun lupton seem to both be taking a xdugef aproach to your anatomy ! good stuff !
02 February 2002, 02:50 PM
looks like the Xdugef approach is getting popular. im thinking that for my next model i will have to try that approach.
02 February 2002, 06:05 PM
I love your hands :D
I m waiting for the head, héhé... :)
02 February 2002, 10:03 PM
Firstly I didn't like.... but now... he's going better and better so I don't know if he will my prefer one :)
02 February 2002, 10:12 PM
Damn :) I seriously think that recently your modelling skills have multiplied 10 fold. This guy is really coming along.
Is that a nail on the back of the foot/leg pointing straight down? Can we get a better shot of that?
02 February 2002, 02:49 AM
guys, what is Xdugef ?
BTW, it looks cool, really like the design. :)
Radiation can do a lot of bad things on lezards !!!!! :D
02 February 2002, 02:54 AM
nice musculature you have going there! The hands and wrists are still looking kinda chunky relative to the rest of the model though. Maybe add more definition to the wrists and elongate the fingers some.
02 February 2002, 05:16 AM
rendermonkey23: yeh I fixed the feet lots, updated below, and the whole wrist hand area is temp, got tired of the clubs :), like the head
felix_man: heheh nice explanation, I did update the feet tho, and about the wrist hmmmm
Martin-K- : although I'm using the Xdugef approach, it's still unique as they're no parcated polys ;)
Cédric: heheh, the start of the head is below ;)
pabbloz: heheh thx :)
Taoizm: :D and yes it is a nail, I didn't render a close up, forgot :) but I was playing around with a 360 degree rotation vr type animation below
Joebount: Xdugef :D ask cerreto for the correct meaning ;) and thx
muckywetnoodle: yeh like I mentioned above the whole wrist/hand area are temp for now...
thanx very much guys for the great feedback, keeps me driving, happy modeling
02 February 2002, 05:19 AM
ok guys here's another update
fix the feet and as you may noticed started the head ;) I know it looks wierd but you'll see where I'm going in the coming updates... http://www.eyecandystudios.net/renders/kar_with_head.jpg
I've also been playing with a 360 degree rotation animation, it's not perfect and it's buggy but have some fun :) you can also right click and zoom in
VIEW ANIMATION HERE (http://www.eyecandystudios.net/renders/kar_rotate.html)
more to come, crits welcome
02 February 2002, 05:32 AM
Hey LilDragon. You already know how I feel about this latest update. Looks like it's heading in a much "friendlier" direction. I'm a fan of evil-badass looking, but this is still cool. If your GF says this is the way to go, then listen to the woman! :D Anyway, I am surprised that you decided to take the Xdugef approach on your modelling there. I don't know if I would want to adopt that technique yet, as I have problems with parcated polies, but it looks much more advanced. I guess I will have to wait and see! :)
02 February 2002, 08:26 AM
thanx madS oh believe me, he's not that "friendly" really, more of a protector, the beginning of the mask fools you into believing otherwise I guess, but there's alot to be added to the mask still :) and the parcated polys you mentioned happen only with the xdugef approach, but we all knew that :)
02 February 2002, 08:30 AM
seems like alot of people want to try the xdugef aproach without thinking about the parcated poly problem its dificult but if you know what you are doing id sugest starting with form first
02 February 2002, 08:31 AM
What is the xdugef approach? Do you have a link or anything to some info on it. I feel Ive missed something. Great work Lildragon
02 February 2002, 01:09 PM
It is just a modling method that lets you manipulte the polys difrently by doubling them at certain places and maunipulating them in a way formaly not used often ! afterwad deleteing the control poly but you can get parcated polys if your not careful ill get the article on it in a few days too dificult to explain if you ve never used the method or seen it
02 February 2002, 07:14 PM
Cerreto, I'm looking forward to seeing that paper. I've been scratching my head about the xdugef approach, and ummm....what the heck does it stand for?
02 February 2002, 07:21 PM
ah yes the xdufeg appraoch. I was wondering what it was I saw bout your model . . . now I know.
Damn hard indeed . . . and even harder to explain . . .
cerreto, dig up that article man . . . it needs exposure . . .
02 February 2002, 09:35 PM
heheh thanx guys :) I'm sure trav will post the explanation soon ;) (he better)
I'll have another update tonight...
02 February 2002, 10:55 PM
02 February 2002, 04:29 PM
HI guys, I know this is a wierd update, but he'll have more armour and greebles, keep in mind he's tribal
The hands and mask and basically everything is just the blocking out stage, I'll add all the extra detailing last
SEE A 360 DEGREE 3D FLASH VR HERE (http://www.eyecandystudios.net/renders/kar_rotate2.html)
02 February 2002, 04:31 PM
ya know what I think bud ;)
love the loincloth. not to sure bout the thighpad & the gray maskthing.
I'm sure you have it all figured out tho and they are just "early" references :)
02 February 2002, 05:07 PM
Excellent stuff lildragon
I like where you're going with the cloth and armour - especially the cape. Are you using Sim cloth for that? Anyhow cool stuff;)
02 February 2002, 10:40 PM
Coool! Lilldragon! Only 1 thing... make the shadowmaps bigger... I asume this is 3dsmax :)
02 February 2002, 02:44 AM
Equinoxx: thanx bud, the thigh pad will be refine for sure, and the face mask umm, I have lotsa work there ;)
ether: thanx luv, yes for the simcloth, if I can get reactor going then probably that, tho I don't think so, I'm adding more to the armour and stuff later when I detail... and I hope you'll be entering soon ;)
Error323: yeh I use Max, and I know the shadows are kinda blah huh? :) well I'll take your suggestion and give it a whirl ;)
thanx guys more to come tonight / tomorrow ;)
(maybe I'll find time to fix those bloody hands :))
02 February 2002, 07:05 PM
just an update, blocked in some more details, feel free to ask any questions. 360 Flash VR is rendering right now
and a closeup of the belt
02 February 2002, 11:13 PM
Pretty cool update. I like the necklace addition. works well with the belt. The arm wraps really help, but they're too symetrical. Break up the wrappings a bit for each arm, and maybe have the end of the wrap peeking out somewhere. Good work mate. :)
02 February 2002, 12:32 AM
One word: Supreme!
But i think that if he is going to stand like that he will fall backwards... right?
02 February 2002, 01:13 AM
I specially like the legs muscles and the detail that tendons give to the feet. It looks very clean. Same for the armor and forearms, I like them that oversized. For me the head is maybe the weakest point although maybe it's still on an early stage to rate ;) . Very good job anyway, I love the overall!
02 February 2002, 06:04 AM
here's the 360 view
VIEW 360 DEGREE ANIMATION HERE (http://lildragon.cgcommunity.com/test/Kar_rotate.html)
Taoizm: thanx bud, and about the wraps peeling at the ends, most def ;)
Sir_Manfred: thanx, umm not really he seems pretty balanced on the legs...
Danko: yup the head is next on my list, and thanx much for the crits
more to come this weekend
02 February 2002, 06:21 AM
hay bud the wrap on the hand are on the button good job, but i'm not sure about the cape anymore but it could just be me. but it coming along great man.
02 February 2002, 07:27 AM
look really cool ,you make a great job ,one thing weird on the 360 .swf he look smaller when we see him from the back, but who care about that iam hurry to see when he will be finish . you can put more detail on the cape and the clothe beside is legs like little wave ...
02 February 2002, 07:44 AM
I just saw the update, I really like! The arms are really lookin good with those wraps going on. I like where this is going!
02 February 2002, 02:02 AM
Really cool ! I really love the design and especially the gloves (uh, I guess it's gloves ?). The real challenge will be the mask IMHO :-)
Impatient to see the next update !
02 February 2002, 02:17 AM
I love your character...Especially his helmet, very nice.
I also like his big hands and feet, makes me think of Final Fantasy IX(Which by the way has some great character design).
Can't wait to see more updates;)
Keep up the good work.
Oh, and feel free to rip apart my character. http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2435
02 February 2002, 02:54 AM
Hi there! Great model u have, love his muscle structure, esp the thighs and feet. Is he a super hero of some sort? he looks like that with the cape and mask. Hmmm..creature design, now why didnt i think of that??!!! :D
I've got something started too, comment it. Wanna know where i can improve. Thanks!
Comment dom's work here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2405)
Oh by the way, thanks for setting up the preview pic page!
02 February 2002, 04:42 PM
Dan Dixon: Hey dan thanx a bunch, as for the "cape" that's the thing it's not a cape :) it's a sash of rank, they'll be more done with it..
Gabe: Thanx Gabe and yeh I'll be fixing that problem in the swf soon :) and the cloth will be more detailed when I get to the last stage thanx
Adam Klein: thanx bud, more to come
Joebount: Actually if you ever saw the hand wraps that Kickboxers or boxers use, that's what these are... as for the head, I'm eager to work on it too, keeping checking, thanx buddy
Haldir: THe head is the worst part :p heheh but thanx, and I think many peeps seem to like the big feet/hand style, which is cool.
dom: Actually no, he's not a superhero :) as I mentioned above it's actually not a cape, it's a sash of rank in his tribe, a sash of rank is worn aver one shoulder and a cape is fastened at the neck and worn over both shoulders :D
thanx very much guys, back to modeling I go, update coming later today
02 February 2002, 07:56 PM
Yah I love the leg design....the walk for him will be very cool.....
not sure about the yellow IMO....but who am I to say..... : )
I think you've got a great thing going keep it up
02 February 2002, 06:54 PM
ooh yeah, lovin the belt my friend.
and teh tape round his wrists and hands are mucho phunky :)
you might want to give his loincloth a little thickness round the edges.
lovin it so far man . . .:D
02 February 2002, 08:30 AM
Hey Lil dragon,
I guess when I said I loved the helmet. I meant in the illustration. I hope to see you capture the the same quality in the model(could be hard). I personally really like the cape/sash. I see where you're goin' w/ it and I dig.
One suggestion. With all that weight on those six toes, you might consider spreadin' them out a bit more and maybe havin' them compress a lil to give the character some weight. Maybe you hadn't gottent to that yet, just an suggestion.
Either way, keep it up... The model is lookin' nice. The proportions good. Are you gonna texture it? I Can't wait!
Here's mine if you wanna take peek.
02 February 2002, 04:57 PM
bRoKEn_CycLE: yes I've been thinkiing about the walk now all this time while I was building him :) the yellow I changed, I guess too many peeps didn't like it enough to prompt a change :P
Equinoxx: thx bud, the loin cloth will hopefully look thicker once I'm done
Haldir: ah ok :) unfortunately tho I changed the whole design, and I believe it's for the better :), you'll see it later today, once I get a good handle on the look of the mask, about the compression of the toes, I agree but for modeling I'm leaving it out, that's better suited for animation :)
02 February 2002, 05:12 PM
new color and took off that crap noise material on the leather, I'm thinking of going duotone tho :) next update
02 February 2002, 06:48 PM
LIl,, cool,, noww, start whit textures,, nice model,,
02 February 2002, 08:01 PM
- I completly redid the head
- Got the goggles pretty much done
- Started the mask and yes it's intentionally suppose to look like a face a bit :) intimidation I suppose
- yes I changed the color :P
02 February 2002, 08:04 PM
NIce,, LIl,, soon textures,,, i mean,, nop,,?
02 February 2002, 08:30 PM
Looking real nice Lil'd. i like the addition of the mask. although the strap seems a tad too big. Maybe thin it down or split it. IMHO. like I said, looking good. :)
02 February 2002, 01:58 AM
thanx guys, definitely look into that tonight Taoizm ...
here are the 360 degree rotations
I'm already aware of the shadow hiccup ;)
here are the "Flash VR" 360 degree rotations

02 February 2002, 02:06 AM
wooh cool character LD. Coming along real nice. Love the definitions in his anatomy. The bandages are a nice touch. The mask is cool, maybe add some more detail to it like thin slits for breathing, like a vent maybe. The Head is lookin waaay better. Nice work bud.
02 February 2002, 08:14 AM
i really like new head.
02 February 2002, 08:51 AM
yep really cool ,you are going on the good way budy ,the 360 are good but not perfect ,look your shadow attetively but who care this not the challenge
and hey if you a minutes check this and comments
i'am a new 3d users since 4 or 5 month so dont be to mad :
02 February 2002, 05:35 PM
sigma: thanx Sigma, yeh I'm still on the mask, ut I have the base down, so all that is left now is some detailing :)
Gabye: yeh the glitch in the shadows are an error on my part, will be fixed next time... and you're plumber dude is cool btw, I love the Benz symbol :)
02 February 2002, 06:40 PM
I dig a lot on the new face!
It's a pitty that the mask hides the nose and mouth, you could try to make a smaller mask/rebreather. Just a thought ;).
02 February 2002, 01:52 AM
Just have to say that I wish I was this good!!! - he is amazing and the mask and goggles make him look really mean - heck he just looks totally menacing - keep up the good work:D :D :D :D
02 February 2002, 06:38 AM
I don't know if I have said this yet, but, This guy is really cool. I love the porportions and the weight in the design. He feels like he wants to be animated. Actually I would love to animate a dude like this. He has very good legs for running and jumping. Almost like a kangaroo with a very bad attitued. Actually it reminds me a little of one of the characters in Tank Girl. very cool indeed.
02 February 2002, 10:52 AM
What a Freak! Major improvements in the body and more improtantly the face. Though a little more detail can never hurt :)
The feet still kinda bug me though, they seem a little flat, maybe look at the bones of a kangoo's foot ? (there is some odd lump about halfway up his foot) Awww who knows I'm no expert on what ever he is ;)
02 February 2002, 06:36 PM
Thanx again guys,
Danko: yeh I know but it's cool, he can take it on and off
Jenn: hehe thx, and as for the menacing comment, awesome I'm glad it's showing thru
KOryH: you and me both, I'm itching to animate him, just gotta add more detailing to the mask, feet, armor e.t.c , b.t.w love your style man
l_farley13_l: nice suggestion will look into it
and here's the sword he'll be carrying
02 February 2002, 10:33 PM
Hey lildragon -
Cool sword:) Like the handle. Is it your own design?
02 February 2002, 01:53 AM
very cool ! sorry no crits just looks nice
02 February 2002, 03:58 AM
Hey thanx ether :) no it's not my design, it's a dwarven battle sword from the game rune :)
Cerreto, thanx bud more coming
02 February 2002, 01:08 PM
Really nice sword Lildragon!
02 February 2002, 02:27 PM
very nice mate. likes a lot. with texture that sword should really shine
02 February 2002, 08:08 PM
thanx guys, here's the final update then I'm texturing and rigging...
- the accesories have to be attached
- I posted big renders so you can catch the details
- I'll be adding more as I texture
so here's the updates
c&c welcome of course
02 February 2002, 08:11 PM
love the 3rd render. now if you could only make kickass textures to compliment it. id be happy :D
02 February 2002, 08:14 PM
wow, lil'd . SCHWAY model. the hair plugs are the best touch. :)
02 February 2002, 08:48 PM
lovin it lovin it, but since you allready know that, and there ain't nothing usefull in gettin some lovin, here's some crits that you can consider my friend ;)
1st off, the hairplugs . . . make more, make em fatter and rounder.
the gloves, tho an excellent extra, are lookin not all that imho. they go thru the mesh at verious places and look a little to uniform to be casually applied "boxing" tape. but I'm sure you allready noticed that.
the bo, is an excellent weapon good job on that. I think that it could use some peeling "skin" I don't know the english word for it, but you know what i mean . . . bark I think is the word :D
that's about it . . . lovin it as a total man :)
02 February 2002, 10:02 PM
he's getting better and better, i love his new mask.
looking forward seeing him textured :)
02 February 2002, 01:58 AM
EQ, I agree about more hairplugs, but the staff is pretty good as it is. Last thing you need is a rough staff giving you splinters. :)
02 February 2002, 03:24 AM
Hot dam! that model improved alot. Love the detail in the mask.
Only thing that continues to bother me are the ears. I cant see the ear cavity.
Maybe its the shadows?. Great work LD, looking forward to seeing him textured.
02 February 2002, 07:42 AM

02 February 2002, 07:50 AM
holy **** , i havent checked the challange section for a week, i am simply amazed how the concepts turned into reality.
wonderful model lil-d , no critique here , just envy.
time to start modelling :)
02 February 2002, 10:08 AM

02 February 2002, 12:48 PM

VIEW ROTATION HERE (http://lildragon.cgcommunity.com/wip/Kar_final.html)
you can now see the feathers and stuff behind him ;)
02 February 2002, 08:48 PM
You already know how I feel about this guy. I just wanted to say, you are making me jealous with your fancy dancy presentation. :D Am I going to have to hire a hitman to stop you now before you texture that bad boy? Awesome job so far. I especially dig that velvety cape.
02 February 2002, 09:04 PM
man, o man...amazing that they let this sort of talent in here. Freaking nice. :D Now a little texture, and him wailing on someone with the staff. ahhhh yeah!
02 February 2002, 10:35 PM

i LOVE the model, but i like so much the first head...but i LOVE your model (i like that muscles hehehe )
02 February 2002, 04:13 PM
CerberusC thank ye :)
ok guys I was setting up the rig last night and was so impatient I had to slap it on Kar :) I did a really nasty quick motion test, but it turned out descent enough to show (I think) I didn't even adjust any envelopes(3DS Max 4.2) it's really noticable in the tip of the ears :)
but anyhoo here ya go, crits especially needed on this, as I'm what they call a "raw animator" :)
THE BONES TEST HERE (http://lildragon.cgcommunity.com/wip/Kar_bone_test.avi)
THE MESH TEST HERE (http://lildragon.cgcommunity.com/wip/Kar_mesh_bone_test.avi)
02 February 2002, 06:15 PM
damn lil'd...for a quick dirty test that motion came out pretty smooth. I'm impressed. :D Even with the default envelopes he looks pretty good (ignoring ears, and the major joints)
02 February 2002, 07:40 PM
thanx Taoizm :) and yeh I have a full weekend to tweak and pose this beast,
Martin K mentioned the darkness of the mesh render and I have to agree so here's an updated animation, divx fudged the colors good tho :(
btw you'll need divX http://www.divx.com/download/downloadlist.php?typeid=1 if you haven't guessed :)

02 February 2002, 09:59 PM
Its always cool to see a model taken to the animation stage!
Great work man, keep it up!
02 February 2002, 11:38 PM
that look great the deformation look good . the ears seem off but it a test .I'll tell you it sure is coming along awesome bud.
03 March 2002, 07:10 AM
Many thanx guys, and Dan yah the tip of the ears aren't influenced by the head bone that's why it floats... this was just a simple test that I enjoyed doing :) much more to come, also does anyone have any reasonable good ideas for animating cloth in MAx? I'm thinking simcloth, prob is the calculations can be murder!!
let me know,
03 March 2002, 01:55 PM
you could always try the flex modifier, but you won't have collition detection . . .
03 March 2002, 07:04 PM
actually I went with simcloth, hear me all simcloth is AWESOME!! here are some quick test, I will have tons of time to tweak it later, oh and don't pay attention to the pinned sash at the end :o
and I know about the EARS :) there's no envelopes for them :)
THE CLOTH BONE TEST HERE (http://lildragon.cgcommunity.com/wip/Kar_cloth_test.avi)
and the mesh test ;)
pardon the cruddy render
CLOTH MESH TEST HERE (http://lildragon.cgcommunity.com/wip/Kar_cloth_test_mesh.avi)
03 March 2002, 02:32 AM
it kinda reminds me of soulreaver, good work thou. like it a lot, keep it up =)
03 March 2002, 04:03 AM
well didn't get much response on the last post other than tilt's thanx bud so here's an update
here's the final motion test, I'm not working on this any further, time for textures
things I'm already aware of
- the cloth sticks have to change the slip in the parameters
- The left arm pops a bit towards the end of the motion
- the hair is not animated
- the strap on his left thigh goes thru it, have to use surface contraints for both that and the necklace ;)
finally the motion isn't solid and there's hardly any secondary motion, but this is just a test
you will need divx and it's 950kb
VIEW THE FINAL MOTION TEST HERE (http://lildragon.cgcommunity.com/wip/Kar_motion_test.avi)
03 March 2002, 04:20 AM
I like the character, great hands! I think he'd look good with some toe movement in those steps and with some buckling muscles on the thigh/quad area especially due to the stance and leg style. and maybe a bit less dramatic torso bend too, just a thought. just a test I know;)
keep it up!
03 March 2002, 04:39 AM
fix the above mentioned, and you have yourself a grade-A piece there. :) Looking very, very nice lil'd. Just a few more days to tweak the settings. ;)
03 March 2002, 06:18 AM
Hey first off i dig the motion test to see how the character works, as with everything, to achieve greatness takes time. More though, I would vote for your character as one of the best because your one of the few who actually started from nothing and went through the stages to show your work from final to end as well as answer questions the same time, that I appreciate for we are all here to learn and get better, that is the purpose right!?!. I have a question for you though, I was wondering as far as how you achieved the green background spotlight effect where it was smooth, did you just get a plane and tilt it up and then create a greenspot light or is it some plugin in 3dmax. Curious? Also I know you already said there is no secondary motion, but what would be nice is to get those hands moving, just wondering if you binded them yet to the skelton. There so big and developed, you can almost bring the character to life if they moved. Great to have you here by the way....
03 March 2002, 07:28 AM
awsome lil great work on the cloth and binding can,t wait to see the animation that you were talkin about bud
03 March 2002, 06:09 PM
Adam Klein: Yup that's all planned in the final movie I'm going to animate him in ;) think Blizzard's WoW trailer
Taoizm: thanx alot buddy, yeh I' having tons of fun with him
Shaun: wow thanx shaun, that's really appreciated, for the green bg effect it's pretty simple actually, it's just a plane on for the floor (not tilted) and the illusion is caused by using a gradient ramp for the enviroment bg, I will send you a .max file to look it over ;) and for the hands believe me I know what you mean heheh, thanx again
Dan Dixon: thank ye Dan, speaking of cloth, I can't believe how well you got yours done, do you have any good cloth textures? or for that matter does anyone?
muchas gracias mi amigos
03 March 2002, 06:26 PM
VERY VERY VERY GOOD !
You can rest now :)
Will you work on the textures ?
03 March 2002, 07:45 PM

03 March 2002, 04:13 PM
thnx much guys, Bassit I actually found an amazing high quality texture resource that I think everyone can benefit from
to the rest I'm texturing this badboy believe me, but I spent most of last night re-rigging his legs, man they were bad :)
more to come
03 March 2002, 04:34 PM

03 March 2002, 11:52 PM
I 've just seen your Final motion test!
It's really great!
What about a run-cycle!
I will enjoy see his massive legs stretch!
A little short with him runing and jumping over a ravine will be so nice!
Great work! Waiting for texturing too!
You started very well!
03 March 2002, 01:27 AM
Nice work duder! For the motion test it would be nice to see some movement in his hands as well. The rigidness of the hands really stands out. I really like the motion of the cloth. The texturing on the leather is looking good too. Keep on rockin.
03 March 2002, 12:43 PM
Thanx, guys, I haven't gotten what I wanted done for the challenge, ie texturing, (but then again it's a modeling challenge right? :)) but here he is nonetheless
After this challenge I'll be continuing work on him in the coming weeks as I'm very excited to get him animated into a short movie, roughly a minute in length, it'll be an adaption of the World of Warfcraft trailer ;) ,yes that's right full musical score and the whole shebang :) this will be posted in the 3D artworks section,....soooo without further adue, here's my final piece (to bad there's only 24hrs in a day :))
I can just imagine him textured :)
03 March 2002, 02:16 PM
Very good modeling! I love it!
03 March 2002, 03:27 PM
Ah yeah bud :)
I love it... And i like the pose very much... Good stuff... :D
03 March 2002, 05:27 PM
nice one indeed. I like it MUCH MUCH more now without those basic colors you had on him before.
it's great modeled and it would be a perfect character if the future textures hold the same quality. *looking forward to the short* :)
03 March 2002, 06:47 PM
very cool lil'd. this model really came together. something to be proud of. Can't wait to see him textured, and animated. :D
03 March 2002, 08:26 PM
Thanx much guys, I'm glad you like it, and the animation I have planned will definitely be shown on cgtalk :) and yeh Taoizm I'm extremely proud with this model :)
