Heya guys, it's great to see some very good and early entries, I'm really looking forward to completing this model :)

Ok a lil background.

Kar is a warrior of the Kaloas tribe. Kaloas are peaceful by nature, but now very battle worn by recent wars that unfortunately plagued the land. Such wars caused massive desolation of the lands and inevitably contaminated the earth and air.

The freak appearance of the Kaloas such as their elongated and extreme limbs were caused from extensive experimental radiation poisons leaking into once clean waters.

The Kaloas rely on their quickness and evasion skills, so masterful with melee weapons they find that the use of guns are meant for weaker races such as man.

Kar is one such warrior Kaloa, and he now steps out to aid his tribe and help rebuild what was once their peaceful land.

Ok enough of that here's the concept I'm planning to model. I'm leaning towards his left glove. He has no shoes, that's because they're no shoes comfortable enough to be worn ;), plus their skin at the bottom of their feet protects them from the radiation, but they still need to detoxify their feet every few hours, or their skin starts to react like man's would. He'll have a detox kit on his belt.

Ah....proof as to why I think its better for me to stay away from character modeling/design...

I love the concept (I have a thing for characters with big hands), really neat. Cant wait to see what he looks like when you are done..and even love to see you drag out a walk cycle with him...

I Love the helmet. Is it going to be his only gadget gizmo deal? Perhaps a hip/back pack with a 'gas converter' (I dont know what your dude breathes :p ).

But I really like the almost atlantian mix of natural and man-made bits.

Is that thing on his left shoulder a tattoo ?

Looking good pal. I really like the way the muscle structure is coming along. Maybe a little more detail around the toenail though. After the great lead in they sort of fall a little flat.

Some more updates....

- I've added some temporary hands as I was getting tired of seeing the stumps ;)

- refined the detail a bit more on the muscles

- And most important I started the armour ;) don't worry to much about the lil hoops on the chest as of yet, it's there for a lil surprise, plus the one on the right will be gone once finished... stay tuned

just one thing though.. from the back view.. the ankles look a little streched... like bent clay..

thanx oozeballz(funny name :)) yeh one of my biggest challenges for myself is to make believable muscles since he's not going to be covered up but too much... I'm still learning tho, about the ankels yeh I agree, I'll fix that thanx... and here's a lil test I was playing with.... thanx for the rig Cemre

Lookin good man, There's only one thing so far that kinda bugs me and it's the fact that there's no way he could stand up. The part of his feet that touches the ground is to far forward. He would just fall backwards. And I think his wrists are a bit too.... thick :) That is of course IMO.

I disagree. from the looks of it the legs will work just fine... especially when he is running full speed, digging those talons in!. as for the wrists. I think they are pretty cool, besides maybe the nuclear survivors need to eat lots of spinach. Anyway I just didn't want to see you change the wrists I love them and gives him a unique style. Great work man, now if I can just get on with my own entry...;)

Damn :) I seriously think that recently your modelling skills have multiplied 10 fold. This guy is really coming along.

Is that a nail on the back of the foot/leg pointing straight down? Can we get a better shot of that?

nice musculature you have going there! The hands and wrists are still looking kinda chunky relative to the rest of the model though. Maybe add more definition to the wrists and elongate the fingers some.

ok guys here's another update

fix the feet and as you may noticed started the head ;) I know it looks wierd but you'll see where I'm going in the coming updates...

I've also been playing with a 360 degree rotation animation, it's not perfect and it's buggy but have some fun :) you can also right click and zoom in

Hey LilDragon. You already know how I feel about this latest update. Looks like it's heading in a much "friendlier" direction. I'm a fan of evil-badass looking, but this is still cool. If your GF says this is the way to go, then listen to the woman! :D Anyway, I am surprised that you decided to take the Xdugef approach on your modelling there. I don't know if I would want to adopt that technique yet, as I have problems with parcated polies, but it looks much more advanced. I guess I will have to wait and see! :)

thanx madS oh believe me, he's not that "friendly" really, more of a protector, the beginning of the mask fools you into believing otherwise I guess, but there's alot to be added to the mask still :) and the parcated polys you mentioned happen only with the xdugef approach, but we all knew that :)

seems like alot of people want to try the xdugef aproach without thinking about the parcated poly problem its dificult but if you know what you are doing id sugest starting with form first

It is just a modling method that lets you manipulte the polys difrently by doubling them at certain places and maunipulating them in a way formaly not used often ! afterwad deleteing the control poly but you can get parcated polys if your not careful ill get the article on it in a few days too dificult to explain if you ve never used the method or seen it

ether: thanx luv, yes for the simcloth, if I can get reactor going then probably that, tho I don't think so, I'm adding more to the armour and stuff later when I detail... and I hope you'll be entering soon ;)

Pretty cool update. I like the necklace addition. works well with the belt. The arm wraps really help, but they're too symetrical. Break up the wrappings a bit for each arm, and maybe have the end of the wrap peeking out somewhere. Good work mate. :)

Great job!
I specially like the legs muscles and the detail that tendons give to the feet. It looks very clean. Same for the armor and forearms, I like them that oversized. For me the head is maybe the weakest point although maybe it's still on an early stage to rate ;) . Very good job anyway, I love the overall!

I also like his big hands and feet, makes me think of Final Fantasy IX(Which by the way has some great character design).

dom: Actually no, he's not a superhero :) as I mentioned above it's actually not a cape, it's a sash of rank in his tribe, a sash of rank is worn aver one shoulder and a cape is fastened at the neck and worn over both shoulders :D

Hey Lil dragon,

I guess when I said I loved the helmet. I meant in the illustration. I hope to see you capture the the same quality in the model(could be hard). I personally really like the cape/sash. I see where you're goin' w/ it and I dig.

One suggestion. With all that weight on those six toes, you might consider spreadin' them out a bit more and maybe havin' them compress a lil to give the character some weight. Maybe you hadn't gottent to that yet, just an suggestion.

Either way, keep it up... The model is lookin' nice. The proportions good. Are you gonna texture it? I Can't wait!

Haldir: ah ok :) unfortunately tho I changed the whole design, and I believe it's for the better :), you'll see it later today, once I get a good handle on the look of the mask, about the compression of the toes, I agree but for modeling I'm leaving it out, that's better suited for animation :)

wooh cool character LD. Coming along real nice. Love the definitions in his anatomy. The bandages are a nice touch. The mask is cool, maybe add some more detail to it like thin slits for breathing, like a vent maybe. The Head is lookin waaay better. Nice work bud.

It's a pitty that the mask hides the nose and mouth, you could try to make a smaller mask/rebreather. Just a thought ;).

I don't know if I have said this yet, but, This guy is really cool. I love the porportions and the weight in the design. He feels like he wants to be animated. Actually I would love to animate a dude like this. He has very good legs for running and jumping. Almost like a kangaroo with a very bad attitued. Actually it reminds me a little of one of the characters in Tank Girl. very cool indeed.

What a Freak! Major improvements in the body and more improtantly the face. Though a little more detail can never hurt :)
The feet still kinda bug me though, they seem a little flat, maybe look at the bones of a kangoo's foot ? (there is some odd lump about halfway up his foot) Awww who knows I'm no expert on what ever he is ;)

lovin it lovin it, but since you allready know that, and there ain't nothing usefull in gettin some lovin, here's some crits that you can consider my friend ;)

1st off, the hairplugs . . . make more, make em fatter and rounder.
the gloves, tho an excellent extra, are lookin not all that imho. they go thru the mesh at verious places and look a little to uniform to be casually applied "boxing" tape. but I'm sure you allready noticed that.

the bo, is an excellent weapon good job on that. I think that it could use some peeling "skin" I don't know the english word for it, but you know what i mean . . . bark I think is the word :D

that's about it . . . lovin it as a total man :)

EQ, I agree about more hairplugs, but the staff is pretty good as it is. Last thing you need is a rough staff giving you splinters. :)

Hot dam! that model improved alot. Love the detail in the mask.
Only thing that continues to bother me are the ears. I cant see the ear cavity.
Maybe its the shadows?. Great work LD, looking forward to seeing him textured.

You already know how I feel about this guy. I just wanted to say, you are making me jealous with your fancy dancy presentation. :D Am I going to have to hire a hitman to stop you now before you texture that bad boy? Awesome job so far. I especially dig that velvety cape.

ok guys I was setting up the rig last night and was so impatient I had to slap it on Kar :) I did a really nasty quick motion test, but it turned out descent enough to show (I think) I didn't even adjust any envelopes(3DS Max 4.2) it's really noticable in the tip of the ears :)

but anyhoo here ya go, crits especially needed on this, as I'm what they call a "raw animator" :)

damn lil'd...for a quick dirty test that motion came out pretty smooth. I'm impressed. :D Even with the default envelopes he looks pretty good (ignoring ears, and the major joints)

Martin K mentioned the darkness of the mesh render and I have to agree so here's an updated animation, divx fudged the colors good tho :(

btw you'll need divX if you haven't guessed :)

Many thanx guys, and Dan yah the tip of the ears aren't influenced by the head bone that's why it floats... this was just a simple test that I enjoyed doing :) much more to come, also does anyone have any reasonable good ideas for animating cloth in MAx? I'm thinking simcloth, prob is the calculations can be murder!!

you could always try the flex modifier, but you won't have collition detection . . .

actually I went with simcloth, hear me all simcloth is AWESOME!! here are some quick test, I will have tons of time to tweak it later, oh and don't pay attention to the pinned sash at the end :o

and I know about the EARS :) there's no envelopes for them :)

well didn't get much response on the last post other than tilt's thanx bud so here's an update

here's the final motion test, I'm not working on this any further, time for textures

things I'm already aware of

- the cloth sticks have to change the slip in the parameters
- The left arm pops a bit towards the end of the motion
- the hair is not animated
- the strap on his left thigh goes thru it, have to use surface contraints for both that and the necklace ;)

finally the motion isn't solid and there's hardly any secondary motion, but this is just a test

I like the character, great hands! I think he'd look good with some toe movement in those steps and with some buckling muscles on the thigh/quad area especially due to the stance and leg style. and maybe a bit less dramatic torso bend too, just a thought. just a test I know;)

Hey first off i dig the motion test to see how the character works, as with everything, to achieve greatness takes time. More though, I would vote for your character as one of the best because your one of the few who actually started from nothing and went through the stages to show your work from final to end as well as answer questions the same time, that I appreciate for we are all here to learn and get better, that is the purpose right!?!. I have a question for you though, I was wondering as far as how you achieved the green background spotlight effect where it was smooth, did you just get a plane and tilt it up and then create a greenspot light or is it some plugin in 3dmax. Curious? Also I know you already said there is no secondary motion, but what would be nice is to get those hands moving, just wondering if you binded them yet to the skelton. There so big and developed, you can almost bring the character to life if they moved. Great to have you here by the way....

Shaun: wow thanx shaun, that's really appreciated, for the green bg effect it's pretty simple actually, it's just a plane on for the floor (not tilted) and the illusion is caused by using a gradient ramp for the enviroment bg, I will send you a .max file to look it over ;) and for the hands believe me I know what you mean heheh, thanx again

Dan Dixon: thank ye Dan, speaking of cloth, I can't believe how well you got yours done, do you have any good cloth textures? or for that matter does anyone?

to the rest I'm texturing this badboy believe me, but I spent most of last night re-rigging his legs, man they were bad :)

I 've just seen your Final motion test!

It's really great!

What about a run-cycle!
I will enjoy see his massive legs stretch!
A little short with him runing and jumping over a ravine will be so nice!

Nice work duder! For the motion test it would be nice to see some movement in his hands as well. The rigidness of the hands really stands out. I really like the motion of the cloth. The texturing on the leather is looking good too. Keep on rockin.

Thanx, guys, I haven't gotten what I wanted done for the challenge, ie texturing, (but then again it's a modeling challenge right? :)) but here he is nonetheless

After this challenge I'll be continuing work on him in the coming weeks as I'm very excited to get him animated into a short movie, roughly a minute in length, it'll be an adaption of the World of Warfcraft trailer ;) ,yes that's right full musical score and the whole shebang :) this will be posted in the 3D artworks section,....soooo without further adue, here's my final piece (to bad there's only 24hrs in a day :))

I can just imagine him textured :)

nice one indeed. I like it MUCH MUCH more now without those basic colors you had on him before.
