09 September 2004, 02:32 PM
I downloaded the XSI Foundations Demo.
the Manuel, tutors talk about these tools also.
it has 3 deferent subdivision systems, particles, explosion, fluids, softbodys, cloth, in black, there active.haven't learned how to use them all yet. (
this list don't have Hair in Foundation.
Foundation has a hair lite ?

got the 30 Day Foundation Demo and I get all these tools with Foundation ?
or this is all the tools that ya need Advanced to get and once ya get $$$ Foundations the tools will be grayed out,not active ? the Advanced,Foundation Demo is the same Demo ?

Hi RorrKonn, from Zbrushcentral, right? ;)

What you get in the Foundation demo is exactly what you get in the full Foundation. There's no hair, unfortunatley. Have a good read of that list... that way you'll know exactly what is missing in Foundation, and what you get in Advanced. Also, have a read of the posts here and at to understand the limitations in more detail.

Thanks R10k

Getting familiar with the app,XSI Foundation is a blast.
Going threw the Doc's alot to take in.
I have yet to figure out how to customize the interface.
Can ya customize the interface make hotkeys and change them and make icons, tabs and all ?

Yes. Go through the HTML tutorials and part of the first one or two deals with setting up custom buttons. You can download them if you haven't received the package yet.

Thanks Coryc.

Right,Left mouse button "s" and "p". these move the views around.
how and the heck do I make icons for them and put the icons next to the camera, eye ,x in the view ports ? it just strikes me as odd there not there to start with.

People actually use those things?!

09 September 2004, 12:06 AM
yea i see no use for those either , just use the S key.

Gwot,Sheep Factory What can I say really want those icon in the viewports.

I know I deserve to be mocked and horse whipped for asking any question before reading the Manuel 10 times, but it's Sunday and I half to go back to work tomorrow.trying to learn XSI in one day just ant very practical is it.but you all have been helpful in my crash cores of XSI Foundation.

I take it that ya could make the "s,p" view icons with SDK.
My experience with Coding is extremely limited.
I don't know anything about SDK or much at all about coding.
Anyone every wrote a viewport "s,p" SDK script ?
To Run XSI do ya need to be good with SDK ?
Coding is not my normal gig.

I'm not sure you'll be able to get the icons and functionality you are looking for without touching the sdk. I think the most you can do is create scripts and commands that you can run from a custom toolbar or shelf. Generally just dragging a chunk of code from your script editor to a toolbar will create an xsi button for you that runs that piece of script. But embedding your own icons into other parts of the GUI like the viewport borders is beyond that. XSI is definitely customizable but not to that degree - at least not for guys like you or me (yet).

You could also try making synoptic pages. They are a way to create more customized toolsets that you might use often. You can use whatever icons and gfx you feel like with those because they are more like working with an html page.

I'm fairly new to XSI as well so sorry for not being of more help on this.

Thanks Gwot.any and all info appreciated.
guess ya could always make custom tool bars that go above the viewports.
I will look in to synoptic pages also.
XSI fells like a dump truck.the comfort of the driver is not the main point the work that the truck does is.
Heck, want a 3D App to fell more like a Rolls Royce where the comfort of the Driver is the point.

What do you all do about forest ?
use Worldbuilder,Vue or something like that ?

you can create a couple trees and instance them over a geometry with a couple of scripts.

I dont think you'll like XSI much seeing you come from lightwave and it seems you are very used to having a plugin to do everything.

I come from Lightwave and RorrKonn your not in Lightwave anymore, XSI has it's own work flow just except it, you can't animate and model while holding your cup of coffee in one hand as you did in LW  XSI has the most used keys sitting under your fingers uses them:thumbsup: !!

Plus unlike LW, XSI keyboard shortcuts are very well setup all the shortcuts are the same no matter what part of the programe your using

I personally like how XSI makes you put your hand on the keyboard the whole time
In lw i only used about 10 or 12 keyboard short cuts for both Modeler and Layout, in XSi i seem to have learnt and uses alot more then that in the first 2 weeks :)

Well Demos our to see if the App's for you.
XSI is killer, just not for me at this time.
Ya never know about the future, not giving up on XSI.

You all have been grate thanks alot for ya help.

I think you are looking for the wrong things in XSI. I come from LW too and the biggest reason I switched was because XSI is a powerhouse for character setup and animation. It's not the most elegant UI in visual terms, but that means less to me than the tools it offers, performance and better workflow. It's kindof ugly and not up to modern visual standards but it's very well designed from a usability standpoint.

it's not so much the inter more about the scripting.and plugs.
never been that crazy about LW's interface either.
but the interface wouldn't stop me from using XSI or LW.

need a main app the uses WB,Vue etc etc + Poser or something like Poser.
all as a plug.that I can afford.the afford parts the catch.

Maya,Max has a Poser+World Builder.plug.Max Charter Studio would be better then Poser of cores.
Can't afford Maya or Max.

I think LW supports Worldbuilder but not Poser.
I think C4D supports Vue but not Poser.
when ya a oneman show in a hurry Poser is very useful for background characters.
Poser is very affordable for those of us on a budget even has hair, cloth.
So don't rag me to hard for using Poser.or judge me buy the lame renders some artist make.
there are no lame Poser Renders at Atomic-3D.

XSI seems to be strong with Character animation but rather dependent on scripting.
apparently hair cost alot in XSI.
Seems Maya,XSI hair is only in the $7000 versions.
Don't know if there's a $500 hair plug somewhere or if ya can make hair with scripts.
LW has sasquatch lite.LW,C4D has $500 hair plugs.

I'm more from TrueSpace then LW.
Started in TS3,4 since gotten 5,6 it's now at version ts6.6sp2.
First LW version I had was LW 7 now have LW7.5c.
I haven't gotten LW's still a possibility I will get LW8.

I am still checking out Demos deciding what I need against what I have to spend.

I am just a Hobbyist that gets paid from time to time.
Since my studio is always undermanned it depends heavily on plugs to make up for the lack of man power.
always on a budget so always looken for the value.

Not sure where I am going to go from here.

Good Luck any way. All I can say is that I understund Your point, and wish you Good Luck.

Hi RorrKonn

C4D has a motion cap format that works with poser very well i've read
Tho i have never seen it in action only read it in the C4D forums here a cgtalk

Lw can import Poser character but take some work to get good weight map working on the hips area

and XSi i have not done a poser character yet, but like LW it would work the same way but better due to seting up the weight maps in the animation view really speeds these thing up plus i'm sure it may have the mocap option as per C4D but again yet to try it

XSI is great i'm moving in as quick as my brain can learn it :buttrock:
