Battle Angel
OpenCanvas, Photoshop/Wacom/About 1,5 Hours. (15 minutes Photoshop)

I was tempted to do a battle angel alita (, but that is best left untouched. So I decided for this one instead. A little experiment in light.

Block01cube: Dont know gimp, but then again I dont use linux. I dont quite get the angel part in that pic. Or the battle part. What am I missing?
Elmasfeo: Lol, he looks pissed.
Edouard: Great style! very iconic. I like that style.
Drumwhore: What can I say, you keep churning out this high quality stuff. Does he look like you btw?
Hawk: Where's the pic?
JhonnyGoo: Hehe, Terminator angel.

No Pressure,,,,,, but I cant wait to see Rasdasa's on this one.

(Its just that all of his could be battle angels. )

I'll start one in a few...

Cool so far:
Pooby - that looks so drugged and innocent....damn cool.
rhemrev - nice mood, I really get a feeling of power from that one. But somehow still delicate. vbmenu_register("postmenu_1554897", true);

09 September 2004, 09:50 PM
Drumwhore - very cool as ususal

Supervlieg - Cheers dude

pooby - I love the colours and the contrast of the violent act with her peaceful expression - well done

Laeng - Very dramatic :) Lighting is a little inconsistant but I like it

The Daily sketch forum seems to be picking up momentum - looking forward to seeing the others

dargon cool pose, nice feathers. not sure about the background
telemaco new style? cool mech!
buzz3d nice pose, nice overall mood, I like the expression
laeng cool idea, too bad you couldn't finish it!
pooby nice picture
rhemrev nice! maybe work out the hands some more then it would be a great picture! I like how it flows into the background, head nicely done too.
andrewley favorite so far, unique style (and there is a katana ;))
supervlieg nice, i think the lightning is cool. maybe too strong.
drumwhore heh very cool angel, nice pose

I have no time to participate these days I am moving.

09 September 2004, 06:35 AM

09 September 2004, 07:39 AM
Photoshop , 6 hour , tablet.. i hope you like my idea

Taron : Amazing Work, nice lightning and colors, i see your work getting long time but results are perfect..

buzz3d : Perfect colors and style too much fantastic . Crazy work man

i can't see Telemaco, Grizlybrice and goul's work. somethings wrong my proxy settings i think.

Nice works friend keep going..

09 September 2004, 08:55 AM
Some really great sketches people!

Dargon, Rhemrev, Taron, Halil, Telemaco, Buzzz3D just to name a few. Great work.

Taron, maybe try to blend the different layers some more, I think I can see some
hard edges in some part of the angel (head and hands). Your skincolor kicks ass :)

Dargon, great design!

Halil, that's a disturbing, but great rendering of evil.

Here's a little manga inspired sketch. Painter, tablet.

09 September 2004, 09:12 AM
Here's mine. About 5 hours (ugh.. too long to sit in one place =p). Painted in PS7 with my beloved Wacom (see a picture ( of it, heheh O:) ).

Yeah I know she doesn't have a visible weapon, or wings for that matter; but beware the wiles of a woman...

09 September 2004, 09:37 AM
block01cube: What exactly is 'gimp' anyway? Hey know what, block01cube? I really appreciate the effort you give each time, even though your work might not be as great as some other people's here (and that's not something to be ashamed of. I don't know if your sketches are you best effort. You could be some great artist and I not know it - but I notice you try - and that's more than you can say for alot of people.) I'll be honest, I don't quite get your pictures - but I still like them.

elmasfeo: I like it. That guy looks like it'd be fun to play with =p.

Edouard: Hey a fresh style. I'm likin' it - good job.

Drumwhore: Guys in toga-type attire scare me =p, but you did a really good job with it.

hawk: I'd really like to see your picture, but I can't seem to make it show up : /. Maybe its just my computer?

JhonnyGoo: Nice job. Yours looks like more of an angel than mine does!

Supervlieg: Really cool. I like the texturish stuff on the wings.

andrewley: Awesomeness. The style is cool, and that stripe in the background really helps tell your eyes where to look.

rhemrev: I love the mood! That's somethin I'd put on my desktop background.

pooby: Looks really good; those eyes scare me though...

Laeng: Nice work, man. That looks like a hard scene/perspective to pull off well.

J_Grieve: Spiffy first one, but I really like your second one. Great idea!

buzzz3d: I really really like those wings and lightning bolt. I should get you to put wings on mine : ).

Telemaco: I always love your style. Cool stuff, man.

thebigxer: I like it, thebigxer; though for some reason the first thing I thought of was the first boss in Donkey Kong 64... why, I don't know....

Goul: Not what I would've drawn, but you did a great job with it.

majofo: Hah, I like it mustache. That pink lighting really helps.

Grizzlybrice: Pretty great. Nice touch with the 'heaven's gate' and stuff in the top left.

Dargon: Just plain cool perspective. Good job.

Taron333: That's one scary dude... (or is it two? I think I see a skull to the left). Those fingers are gonna give me nightmares.

Anubis-Halil: Very clever. You have a very nice style.

Art2: Cool sketch. I think it'd look great colored. I like the wings and guns.

Hope I didnt miss anyone. Now I'm off to bed... I've been up for nearly 23 hours, and been running on only five hours of sleep as it is. I'm stupid to stay up so late... heh. O = ) Guess we all know how that goes though...

G'nite sketch group people. *yawn*

09 September 2004, 09:57 AM

"but beware the wiles of a woman..." - heh heh heh - so are we going to get to see her in "battle mode" Andyman? :D

09 September 2004, 10:43 AM

09 September 2004, 10:57 AM
Thanks andyman!

Some great entries here!

Pooby: Great stuff. Very nice color choice.
buzzz3d: Another top entry. Great choice of colors.
Telemaco: Great sketch, Reminds me a bit of those gundam bots.
Taron333: Amazing skin tones.

09 September 2004, 11:27 AM
WOW! what did you had for breakfast today? today's entries are great!

I'm trying to learn from you people, so I have a little question for you in general.... how is the mental process that you follow when you do sketches like these? I mean, do you "see" the finished image in your mind and you go for it, or do you just start painting without thinking too much and after playing with it for a while a beautiful image suddenly appears? how do you choose your colours/compositing/perspective/that kind of things?

09 September 2004, 11:47 AM
I spend five to ten mins thinking about the sketch, without touching anything, then I get two or three ideas. I play with whem with the wacom tablet, doing real sketches to decide composition and/or size of the main bodies. Depending on the time I want to spend I start detailing in a new layer, based on the whole picture I did in the "real sketch", so I have no trouble with proportions. First the line, then colour, rush, shadows and lightning. Generally I decide lightning in the middle of the process, but everything can change in the middle, and most of times It does.

09 September 2004, 12:04 PM
pshop 2.5 h - women are hard to draw (at least without reference...)

09 September 2004, 12:13 PM
Taron... I must say I'm impressed with your skin shading.. on another note, I also saw on your site that you have a 3d skin shader for lightwave.. is it available?
Buzzz3d... Very nice lighting.. especially coming through the feathers.
Anubil-Halil... I like your stylised approach a lot.
Telemaco... nice Moebius style linework
andrewley.. Great layout design

09 September 2004, 02:14 PM
Thanks, drawMonger! =)

09 September 2004, 02:39 PM
My entry for the day...

Photoshop and a Wacom in 4 hours

*Edit* Sorry Andrewley, I didn't mean to steal your idea, just saw it now, really like it though! Drumwhore's is great as well

09 September 2004, 02:54 PM
 just wrote a comment on nearly all the entries when my browser crashed :banghead:

GRRR. I think Supervlieg had this before once, I know how you feel...

In short:
Thanks everybody, happy to see the weekend-editions are alive too.
Thanks Andyman for writing all those comments. Great entry you have too man, she doesn't need the wings man. As a small suggestion to make the image even better: maybe you can put a few dark clouds on the horizon on the right behind her so the eye doesn't fall off the page on the right.

J_Grieve: Liked your medic-image too, maybe spend a little more time on it to make it a finished piece.

Pooby, DocBoom, Art2, Taron333, Anubil-Halil, andrewley: all great entries.

09 September 2004, 03:20 PM
Andrewley: that is one awesome sketch!!! I love the background, the lights and pose... what else to say? exelent!

Taron333: I like your concept and colors.

Anubis Halil: I love your style and colors! nice concept too...

09 September 2004, 03:36 PM

Literally: HOLY SHIT!
Man...I really love it! Fantastic, Romero! Stunning.

09 September 2004, 07:48 PM
Newbie here, decided to start joining in with these sketches. My work is sub standard, but it sure is fun joining in.

Wacom and Paint Shop Pro 45 mins

09 September 2004, 09:52 PM
Your work is once again astonishing... There are times, and this is one of them, when I dont really seem to understand your art, but then again it looks really really indiscribable.

I guess this battle angle was the one we all have been waiting for ;)
(but this STILL seems like one of the hardest topics ever to decide for my favourite sketch...)

09 September 2004, 10:51 PM
Man, I got so hyped while looking at all of your entries (especially rasdasa/romero/talon, brilliant stuff!), I just had to do another one! And since my last one was a female angel, I thougth I'd do a male one this time...enjoy! :)
5 minute pensketch / 3h painter 8 / wacom

09 September 2004, 11:02 PM
My stylistic version of a "Battle angel". I'm not satisfied with the ending result.

Photoshop, Wacom, 2hrs

Thank you tuzz.
Think about it like this: You are a spider on the wall, the demon is against the wall under the blade, his hand stretching towards your direction. You are looking at the scene from the side/above and your head is tilted.
the angels left foot is semi-propped on the wall, his right is supporting most of his weight.
Look at the demon he has in his in his right hand and you'll see which way is down ;)

I know they are confusing, but I do it for the extra strain of challenge.

Thanks again.

09 September 2004, 12:46 AM
wow, not one Alita so far . . . I'm surprised. Might have to fill the void if I can find time.

09 September 2004, 05:10 AM
she hates it when the guts stick in her hair.
