Title: Wood Dragon
Name: Chris Lomaka
Country: United States
Not actually inspired by LOTR ents; i just can't help it if it took me forever to actually finish this one... Chinese mythology has a dragon for nearly everything, so this is my interpretation of a wood dragon.

- It looks great!
- The leaves in the foreground are a little flat looking.
- Sort of a cross between realistic and painterly image.
- The bark looks a little "soft" to me.

Great style!! I love the lighting!! Any partictular chines story inspire this?? If so where could I find some of those stories?? (I've checked my local library and nothing)
09 September 2004, 02:22 PM
I like it a lot, especially the lighting. As Ed said, the bark is too soft...
09 September 2004, 02:26 PM
volumetric lighting rocks!
09 September 2004, 03:00 PM

09 September 2004, 04:18 PM
overall the colour is good. But one thing that i don't like is that there doesn't seem to have any depth.
09 September 2004, 05:22 PM
Very good. I like a lot your dragon :applause:

great render !
09 September 2004, 12:14 AM
I'm curious if you've done any changes to your dragon from when you first posted it back in February?
I happen to love dragons and liked the direction you took with your "wood dragon" so I downloaded the JPG of your model back then. :)
09 September 2004, 01:55 AM
Very nice work. I don't realy know exactly why, but i actualy find important appeal to scene which represent nature and other green stuffs. Maby it remind me that i spend too much time at staring at my flat screen: nevertheless, this one is realy nice!
09 September 2004, 04:58 PM
The words aren't coming into my mind. It's fantastic. The volumetric lights and, the face of the dragon, is amazing. Quite nice work man.
In my opinion the pictures like this are the best. The feeling of the picture is better than anything what i have seen.
09 September 2004, 07:21 PM

Good character and beautiful image. Maybe more bump in the dragon skin.
09 September 2004, 03:02 PM
huh, looks like my email is being flakey in updating me about this... sorry it took this long to reply to you all.
EdHarriss, T[iNs]S, HapZungLam, Niphilim-
You're definitely right, there is a definite flatness to a few areas, and the bark could use more roughness. Ironically, the thing that caused this problem is the very thing that enabled me to complete this project: Photoshop. This guy was on the burner for a long time, and the deadline for Expose 2 gave me the kick I needed to get it done. All the leaves were done in PS, which is why a lot of them look flat. (Now that I have time, I could map those leaf images onto geometry...) And the bark... well the bark was part of why he was sitting around for so long to be completed. I just absolutely could not get the whole dragon's texture to render/map perfectly. You know the story- looks good except for a few spots; fixing those spots messes up the ones that were good. So there's a lot of touch-up of the bark in PS, too.
Flex Giddy, kim young hwan-
It started ages ago with a gods and demons challenge, and I thought it would be a good excuse to make a dragon :) I found some misc webpages that talked about 4 elemental dragons: wood, water, fire, and air (i think). I did sone sketches of a water dragon, but the wood ones were better.
Napa!m, Ufu'uk, Lord Dowswell-
Hate to break it to ya, but the sun streaks are PS :( (I can get close to the same in LW, but time was short, and I was having trouble getting it 'just right')
Thanks for remembering:) This post was mainly because I saw the new proceedures for submitting images for the gallery here. I'm not sure if I changed much, but the last things I messed with are the dust motes and carving my name into the rock at the bottom left.
It took me a year in the desert to learn how important nature is to me (especially green, healthy things)
Thanks! I did many, many sketches before even starting, and more all the way through.
And to all the rest-
Thanks for all the compliments and critiques! They are appreciated!

09 September 2004, 09:56 AM
is very good!!!
l like that
09 September 2004, 09:59 AM
Nice idea! Wood dragon..
Maybe a rock dragon, or maybe a dragon looks like a chameleon. No matter where it stays, its skin turns to the same texture as the objects.
09 September 2004, 07:29 PM
WOW!!! Great work:applause:
09 September 2004, 08:45 PM
09 September 2004, 10:31 PM
Excellent job!!!. Nice texture and lighting too.
09 September 2004, 09:45 PM
Mega, mega cool image!!!
Is the dragon UV textured? no stretching problems?
I'm looking for a fix.
09 September 2004, 11:16 AM
Great image!! especially render:thumbsup:
09 September 2004, 11:27 AM

09 September 2004, 12:36 PM
Impressive idea of a "tree".
09 September 2004, 03:22 PM
This is really cool, I like how you put some of the conecpts of the tree into it.
Try some of the others then you could have a collection kinda like the battle of the elements.
09 September 2004, 08:38 PM
It is an amazing image. It is really wonderful indeed. (im am in love with dragons so... :)
Keep on this (fantasy) way. VeryVery good. Grretings from Hungray ^__^
09 September 2004, 01:08 AM

Really nice, I like it a lot!
09 September 2004, 04:43 PM
Well, since no one else has said it yet...Lightwave ROCKS!!! I want to thank you for creating such a nice piece and doing it in LW, it nice to see others using lightwave. Anyway, keep up the good work and hope to see more of your work soon.
09 September 2004, 09:53 PM
A very interesting concept, I like it, good job :-)
Hummm...everyone on this site seems to be stuck on how dark or light someones work is....so many out there really take pride in what they accomplish...folks post what they have created and are proud of...its all great and all intended to be posted to share with members as an accomplishment....and it is all a great addition to this site.
09 September 2004, 01:34 PM
pensart- the dragon is all sub-patches/meta-nurbs, so I couldn't really do uv mapping, plus since it's all curvy, the unwrapper kinda goes nuts trying to take it apart. I used a combination of cubic and spherical mapping with masks, and photoshoped up the errors.
WhItE CoFfEe- i've done some good sketches for a rock dragon (especially after seeing how nice the rock here turned out) and a cave dragon. I have a few other projects going at the moment, but you might see them them realized in the future.
09 September 2004, 06:35 PM
wow! it's a great work!
09 September 2004, 03:46 AM
Hello, could someone help me with putting my own pic in my avater please :)
and also in my signature
Thanks alot
09 September 2004, 09:25 AM
well, i don't like the idea of fixing the final image in photoshop. the textures should be prepared so they look well already in final rendering. that's my opinion. despite it the picture is great.
09 September 2004, 01:20 PM
Your work is realy cool! Hello from Moscow =)
09 September 2004, 04:24 AM
awesom, totally cool.
09 September 2004, 04:02 PM
I think that you molodec!
09 September 2004, 12:59 PM
Marvellous work! I like the concept very much, something reminds me for Lord Of The Rings designs and that's great!
If you take advises from noobies like me,I'll just say that the bunch of leaves positioned infront of the dragon's right arm(at the left side of the image) looks very flat.My opinion is to remove it.The DOF effect isn't so important, bacause the dragon is just great!:)
P.S. Please tell me how did you make the trees in the final render, are they composed in Photoshop or whit Maya's Paint Effects and sorry for my poor English:)
09 September 2004, 04:10 PM
All the foliage (fore and background) were done in photoshop. Had I the time, I would have mapped it to geometery, but I like how it turned out :)
09 September 2004, 09:26 AM
This is great... composition, color, design, everythying... it makes me happy looking at it.
09 September 2004, 04:28 PM
looks good, but if you dont mind i have a few crits. first off everything is green in the picture, te dragon looks to be made out of bark yet he is green, i havnt seen green back before. know i know that you might not be going for realism but if you changed taht green on teh dragon to aa brown, or even a blue white, aspens are taht color, then that dud woudl pop right out. also does he have wings, im asuming that the sticks going up from te sides are wings, but teh wing looks liek a tree and totaly blends in with the background. if they are not wings give hiom some, all dragons have some sort of wings, and what good is a dragon that cant fly. also you put some tone on the close arm, but no where else, just woundering did you try other places and it didnt look good or did you get lazy? lets see... also this is a person prefrence but teh volumic light just doesnt work. it doesnt feel like its in the picture as much as it feel like its a comp job, plus its a verry warm yellow which if that was the sun source it would be making your white rock yellow. other then that cool image, tweak some stuff and it will be tight, i realy like the rock that he is on you did a realy good job with the texture and such. anywoh keep it up man. _Matt
09 September 2004, 11:28 PM
If you animate it, it would be awsome... ps. nice work:buttrock:

Amazing... the idea, techics, etc just brilliant...
01 January 2005, 07:37 AM

You choose a great lighting (time) for this rendering!
The morning sun light make the dragon so real!
I think the leaves at the back of the dragon is the "wing" right?
but it's hard to recognize....
Anyway! Good work!!!

If this is the medium version I wonder what the high quality version looks like (hint)!
Cool concept and very nice executed :applause:
07 July 2005, 12:29 PM
It is indeed huge, at 2250x3000 pixels; the largest thing I've rendered yet. It does however, look very nice when printed :)
