08 August 2004, 04:56 PM
Hello all. My first try-out to make clouds.

I used a very old story and based the idea of the drawing on it. So get going giant, up , up to the city in the clouds!
Nice style supervlieg by the way.

Here is my entry for today. I am pretty happy with it, but supervileg is right, clouds take to long to get right.

Here is mine.

I asked Drumwhore what size he normally works at and so I worked at the size he does and this is what i got. Thanks Drumwhore!!
It's nowhere near as good as the stuff he does but it's a start I think.

08 August 2004, 10:37 PM
Hi everyone,

Here's my entry, ~2h30, photoshop, Wacom.

Wow, it looks a lot like Drumwhore's (especially at the bottom) ... oh well, great minds think alike? -- I hope!

@Rasdasa : Those buildings look alot like those in morrowind (the telvannii towers and such) .. That's a compliment!

@Drumwhore : Wow, really nice!

@Everyone : Great work so far, Crits are more than welcome

@DmageXVII : ... oh wait, that's me!

08 August 2004, 10:42 PM
Thanks for the comments! :D
I've been asked several times to write a tutorial or something like that.. So for those interested, you can check it here ( :) It is based on today's sketch.

08 August 2004, 10:46 PM
Great tute Drumwhore! Many thanks :)

08 August 2004, 11:11 PM
very cool topic! Romero, excellent work, great mood. Drumwhore also excellent piece. I can't participate this week, I'm "welcoming" the new guys on our students community but I'll defininately do this one later.

08 August 2004, 11:15 PM
Thanks for the kind words gents (and ladies), but I'm still not taking my pants off :D

08 August 2004, 11:50 PM
Photoshop... 45 min.. to 1 hour.. (not sure.. lost track of my time somewhere in there). Im actually surprised how my clouds turned out since I'm horrible at it. I guess that keep practicing make perfect. :D It's futuristic type... so... don't make fun of my buildings, etc. :P They are *delicate*! :P

Great job drumwhore and rasdasa... both of yours are my favorite so far! :D Keep it up!

Edited: Yucky... with my other computer w/ a lcd monitor that I use to paint, the contrast (at least thats what i thought) was good... but on this monitor it is horrible. Seems very uncontrasted. Does it look ok on ur monitor? This monitor Im using right now is very old btw... lol maybe it has some problems. :P

2nd Edited: Ok I updated with more correct adjustment... think it's better now. :)

09 September 2004, 12:22 AM
...28 minutes in openCanvas1.1
...1 hour in Photoshop

...1h28 minutes altogether then...haha, cool! :)

This seems to become my kind of sketch combo! :buttrock:

So, I shoved things around a little bit and did some occasional changes to it,
while I couldn't quite focus on it, but I think it is very much done now....still
just a speed sketch, but now it has been stretched all over the course of
today...funny how that happens....anyway, here it is....

09 September 2004, 12:43 AM
Taron33... the idea of that is very good, but that black stuff... that turns me off! :/ In reality, there's no absolute black color especialy in shadows.

Would help a lot if it is more like blueish. or decrease the contrast and add blue to it. I like the part where it looks metalish... try to add that to that black part.. would help much.

Just thought I would comment on that. :)

09 September 2004, 12:48 AM
Hahaha, that's awesome! Thanx Dream! I have this thing sometimes, where I just complete desaturate the image and overlay it over top to crank the contrasts. I do that to lousy images or not so interesting ones, like this one for instance, or simply when I feel a bit lost. In this case I completely ignored everything and just did it, but you're perfectly right!

Maybe it deserves some more love...hmmm....I might squeeze it in at some point tonight and take some more extra special care. That would change the specs a little I guess hehe...not that that matters, but I'll update the info then, too!

Thanx a whole lot! :buttrock:

09 September 2004, 01:00 AM
Taron.. no problem! I can't wait to see your updated version! I know what you mean btw. :D

09 September 2004, 01:16 AM
Wow, some truly great cities posted already and after the comments about blackness Im even more afraid to post my pic, even though it contains no true black at all...Oh well, you live you learn I guess ;)
Done in Open Canvas 1.1 and then brought to Painter 8 for finishing touches..All in all +-30mins, learned quite some things again (especially about what not to do next time :), so I guess for me it was a fruitfull exercise..

09 September 2004, 01:30 AM

Great topic again today, I like these non-hell related ones for a change ;)

Ball-point pen, about 45 minutes, photoshop, about an hour, wacom.

Some great work, as usual:

Drumwhore You've really come along a long way since the first ones you posted here! Good job!
mdme_sadie Great different take! I should've been as clever. I like the textural look too!

09 September 2004, 02:23 AM
I'm with you on the topic Dargon, I just don't have a spare minute to do anything.

09 September 2004, 02:57 AM
Taron: You are really improving on controlling your colors. I think you could now desaturate them a bit and it will lean you a bit more toward realistic (if thats the direction you want to go). (I know where you started ... so I can say.... Excellent improvement)

I typed up a bunch of kudos to everyone, but when I tried to change a simple spelling error I lost everything...aaarrrrrr. Anyways

There were so many great posts today that I spent some extra time on mine.
great job to all.

Drumwhore, you rocking again. Seeing all these wonderful stuff from all of you, am almost ashamed to upload mine, but am determined to learn and the only way for me to do that is tag along. Just think of me as that annoying little sister that keeps following you around cos she thinks you are the greatest :D
**I got in trouble AGAIN, with perspective. Finally saw a pic of a stairway and used that as reference.
Thanks Drumwhore for the tut.

nice stuff so far!
I especially like erikoinens - nice style

09 September 2004, 10:18 AM
Thanks DocBoom. :) I was about to say that I like your image so far the best, but then you said that you like my style in that pic which makes me even more happier to say this. :) Your pic makes me think of Super Mario. :D

09 September 2004, 10:39 AM
This thingie is addictive. I keep tapping on my desk, hitting refresh, waiting for Roberto to wake up ;)
Maybe I better do some work :D

09 September 2004, 10:40 AM
Queensoul, me too! :D Although, I do things at the same time. :)

09 September 2004, 11:05 AM
First of all I want to thank You all for the nice comments. I didn't think anyone would like the pic that much since it has no story to tell, it is just a scene.
The technique is completely after Goro's tutorial, so I'm a little bit ashamed to read compliments that ought to go to his address... ;)

- csmallfield: Every-time I see your pic I like it more, especially the hair, although it could be a little more dense towards the head I think.

- Erikoinen: Beautiful colors, great texture!

- Drumwhore: Absolutely cool, thanx for the tut! And man, 1700x960!
:banghead: And I thought I was doing something wrong, because I never got those fine details, working on 640x480!

- Rasdasa: You shouldn't have writen this "fluffy peas & ass" stuff, now it always seems to me the trees and houses bend and arch because of the smell... ;) I can't help it.
Great drawing though, as always.

- Taron: Did you already change the pic? I don't see any black at all! (On the other side, I'm on my PowerBook right now, everything is brighter on a Mac...) Actually I do like the colors on this one, reminds me of "The Abyss (" or "*batteries not included (" (Yes, it's that bright!)

- PaulZ: I think black (or very dark color) is okay when You have a dark mood in your pic, it's only to much when you do something with a huge amount of ambient light like Taron did. Just my 2 cent...

- Dargon: I Like them buildings and the hight you got from opening the clouds.(Is this Great Britain down there?)

- meta_Nerd: Beautiful mood.

- MasterMan: Lol :)

- 3db2: I'd love to see some more of this style, cool architecture and aircraft!

Okay , phew, thats it... Althoug I'm extremely talkative today I couldn't comment on every single one, sorry.

09 September 2004, 11:19 AM
....I thought this is probably the most cheesy topic of them all and it totally makes very much everyone paint the same two pictures...and yes, we did, but's beautiful! I can't believe how of all topics this one would bring out nearly the best of everyone...incredible!

However, although I really neglected it in the beginning I now finally updated mine, too, which (oh go figure) brought it also to 1.5 hours of work..hahaha...seems to be another standart for this kind of topic....

I'm not exactly sure what the point of sketch of the day is, unless that puts the entree into a gallery (I must have missed the informations on that concept!?). However, today I would wish to see several pictures make it into such a gallery.

I can't make a list of favorites, too many perls!

Regarding my update...
Hey dreamMaster, what do you think about the blacks gone, but I miss them now?! ;)
Hey meta_Nerd, ehh...I think it is a bit desaturated now, but damn, I made it a lit-candyland! I miss a bit of the punchiness....

Ok...I can't help it, I have to give at least a few favorites:
meta_Nerd: ....incredible! Absolutely stunning drama monsterously beautiful and ominous.
The depth and the threat that vibrates through that damn piece of art is outstanding! :buttrock:

Rasdasarambazbamba: You're insane...a permanent disorder. Love it! :applause:

Drumwhore: print it, sell it, it'll pinch all the kinkates off the walls...hehehe. Glorious!

r0mer0: once one gets passed the toxic air and really looks into it, this is one of the most explorable use of a picture at that resolution. Such a bizarre clearity at such a fogged up city...hehehe

Erikoinen: I wouldn't be surprised to find this one day in some art book...somehow very decorative... :)

Supervlieg: cute!

csmallfield: I'm still waiting to see Fritz the Cat run in, but I believe he got stuck at the foot of that cliff...smoking up!

PaulZ: Clever... and pretty! looks a bit more like someone burned the hay next door, but I like the intensity of it!

Dargon: We've just had a talk about your piece, meta_Nerd and I, and he's absolutely right, you're showing a great style! I wished the middle tower would lean forward or bend more crazy to support the funny funky comic perspective in there, but it's really a fun piece!

MettoolMan: HAHAHAHAHAHA....HAHAHAHAHAHA....HA.....idea, man, great idea!

...and has SteveV just changed his avatar?!? Hahaha....frightning development there!

09 September 2004, 11:54 AM
long time no post.... been busy.. and lazy :)

drumwhore inspired :P

ps+wacom = 30to40mins

09 September 2004, 11:55 AM
:wise:That Cat's called Fritz ( ;)
Better! ;)

09 September 2004, 12:00 PM
....I thought this is probably the most cheesy topic of them all and it totally makes very much everyone paint the same two pictures...and yes, we did, but's beautiful! I can't believe how of all topics this one would bring out nearly the best of everyone...incredible!
Well, there's been a lot of cheesier topics... Personally I'm happier if there's more ways you can interpret the scene. The vague ones are the best. But the specific ones like this are good, as long as the only thing to really draw isn't a joke. I like the sketches better than the comics.

But really, this one did turn out really nice! Most are pretty much the same idea, but some nice stylistic differences in them!

Dargon: We've just had a talk about your piece, meta_Nerd and I, and he's absolutely right, you're showing a great style! I wished the middle tower would lean forward or bend more crazy to support the funny funky comic perspective in there, but it's really a fun piece!
I'm glad you like! It's not my favorite, either among my own works, or amongst the ones in this thread, but it was a fun one to do.

Cheers to all the people who commented on mine! A good amount of nice work in here, and it's nice to be recognised.

Extra shoutouts:

Taron333 I like the rework quite a bit more. Was the face always there? I never noticed it on the first one.

iamintricate Once again, nice to see people take the topic a little differently. Good job on it too!

3db2 Lovely, illustrative. I was thinking of going more that route of colouring myself, but it wasn't going to work with my composition. It really does work with yours though. Kudos! I think you may have my vote on this one!

meta_Nerd Nice, moody piece. I think it could use another element in the foreground to tie it all together though.

09 September 2004, 12:03 PM
LOL Taron, I found a picture from about ten years ago, long haired heavy metal head.
I still love the metal, the hair's thinned a bit since then though.

09 September 2004, 12:07 PM
exellent stuff taron and dragon too! really good sketch in here :-)

09 September 2004, 12:07 PM
:wise:That Cat's called Fritz ( ;)

Thanx! Smartass! :D
It's a cat, it smokes up....big deal, it wouldn't come if anyone called it Frank either!
('s alright now...hehehe!)

Dragon...thanx a lot! No the face wasn't in there, but I felt it needed to be there...I futzed alot with all of the colors, but the more I did it, the more I had no idea if it's alright anymore....kinda bizarre...I hope it's ok now... :banghead:

Half hour doodle on paper/pencil. 10 minutes coloring in PS/mouse.

09 September 2004, 05:33 PM
I wrote a little test program to keep track of how long you have worked on a file. It also records each time the file is saved. If you would like to give it a shot go ahead and try it.

sorry, Windows only. (

How it works,
Open photoshop or your drawing tool.
Create a document.
Once you have saves the document, now you can use it with FileWatch.
open an explorer window and drag the file you want to watch into the fileWatch program.
(the program starts in "Always on top mode" can turn it off if you like(bottom right)).

go into your drawing program and draw and save.
Each save will cause the program to record the total time, and time since last change.

It is still very crude and clunky, but then again it was quick and free...right.

I know people can change files on my web, and cause problems with files, so....
if you dont trust the download, you can email me at

and I can send you a clean version.

However, I will be gone for about a week and don't know if the place I am going has internet...Hmmmm scratch that....(availiable at a decent speed).

If this post breaks any rules please remove it Moderators....I am just trying to share and help others.

have fun,

Oh yeah, features requests and bugs should all be sent to the above email address.

One feature that I want to put in and maybe I can do it before I a pause/wife button. So when you have to take out the can pause.

09 September 2004, 06:12 PM
That's a cool idea!!

Thanks, I'll probably use it!

09 September 2004, 07:24 PM
thanks meta-nerd, i always hurt myself trying to figure out how much time i've put into these :scream:

Hey good to see you back Telemaco, I have been missing your sketches.

Nice entry as well!

09 September 2004, 10:18 PM
Taron33... that's MUUUUUUCH better! Now you see what I mean! lol black ruined it all... now it's way better! Keep it up! :D

09 September 2004, 10:23 PM
welcome back telemaco! :D just like supervlieg said... u give great contribution to these threads

09 September 2004, 10:27 PM
I think this is the most contributed thread ever, and here was me thinking we'd gone from a mob into a small group... great job everyone. And great to see some of the old faces come back too.

09 September 2004, 11:23 PM
okay I wanna try this too, here's my contribution:

I know it's nothing fancy at all, but to me it's a just a step in the right just to get something (kind of) done :x

09 September 2004, 02:27 PM
Beautiful stile Telemaco!

mtea_nerd thanx, nice prog! but I found a terrible bug! The button on the lower left launches Internet Explorer.

09 September 2004, 09:28 PM

whoops, I have that button for me to link to the root post of daily sketch. (I must not have removed it in the published build)

Also I have noticed that painter deletes(or something) its file each time it saves. This makes it very difficult to know when the original file was created. So it doesn't work with FileWatch yet.

Since this was just for fun, and I am so busy, I won't be able to do alot of test for this stuff. But if you email me I will surly put it in a TODO list.

PLEASE EMAIL ANY PROBLEMS TO (or hurrays & Ideas):

I just don't want to add non sketch related topics to this list.

09 September 2004, 01:28 PM
