This is the in-game cinema model of Foster from MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf. The model is around 7500 polys with normal and specular maps.

08-24-2004, 09:54 PM
Best thing is, his lighthearted-ness really shows. Well done.

08-24-2004, 09:58 PM
That's amazing work. I am new to this site. Someone mentioned you had a web site. Would you mind telling us what that is again. Being a new nurbs modeler, I am blown away that this is polygons. How long did it take you to complete this model?
Also do you have a wireframe of this model?
sorry for all the questions?

Any tips you want to share on how you got your character so realistic.....please please please

08-24-2004, 10:50 PM

WOW! Awesome!
Next time my mech break down I want this guy next to me!

Please post wireframe!

08-25-2004, 12:38 AM
Awesome work! Great model and Texture, top notch!
It will be great if you can show us your wireframe and texture maps! :)

08-25-2004, 04:10 AM
good model!

go on !

08-25-2004, 05:11 AM
One of the best male models I have seen on cgtalk so far. Really really great!!!

08-25-2004, 05:45 AM
Thanks everybody!

jynce: My site is ( I'd say this character took about 4 weeks? Hard to say it was a long time ago. He was pretty annoying to make because of all the doodads, belts, and scruffy hair. But I'm happy with the results. All the extra stuff looks cool in motion. Big props go to Joel Dang who did a great job rigging the character, and of course Alan Noon who made the rig.

My tip would be to practice a lot and try to do what the artists you look up to do, and drink mountain dew. If you ever want some crits on work feel free to email me. I'd be glad to help.

Troy McClure: Who says all of them are watches? :)

Here is my concept for the character, a detail and a wire shot. Sorry but I can't post the textures.

08-25-2004, 06:08 AM

Holy crap! that looks better than most pre rendered stuff!
Great work again - i loved the dark haired woman you did before as well.

I sense a front page plug...

08-25-2004, 07:00 AM
normal mapping, eh? so the lighting isn't baked on?

i wonder, would you be able to post a sequence or animation with the light moving?

08-25-2004, 07:08 AM

08-25-2004, 07:36 AM
I think, it is very, very good! Great work and i agree with Andy H!

08-25-2004, 08:11 AM
 Great!, no crits

08-25-2004, 08:19 AM
Great, amazing modeling and texturing skills...

08-25-2004, 11:18 AM
Whoooa! The texturing and character design are amazing! My only crit would come from the character design: The dude looks more like an actor or a model than a guy from a garage. Other than that the character design rocks! The suite is awesome with all the detail!

08-25-2004, 12:17 PM
"The dude looks more like an actor or a model than a guy from a garage."

Funny you shoudl say that...

Seperated at birth?

08-25-2004, 01:38 PM
Wow. They are both blonde! And they both have different noses! ;)

08-25-2004, 04:51 PM
Owan wilson definately is more annoying of the two :), and if you include his brother hes the most annoying of the three.

great work, verry impressive

08-25-2004, 09:56 PM
Plugged. Wicked stuff man.

now if only you'dbe so kind as to show us some of those rigged animations :D

08-25-2004, 10:09 PM
......and Textures!!!

08-25-2004, 10:14 PM
great, very good expression! textures are incredible for a game model...

08-25-2004, 10:16 PM
wow, great character youīve made. from design over modeling to texturework - itīs quality!
his face is great and i like how you made his hair - just amazing!

only crits are his weak belt. boring texture, i canīt even say, what material it should be. its a grey, blurry soap.
the other thing, that is annoying are his kneepads. some highlights would look better. even when they are very dirty and used, some shininess on deep scratches and the edges of the plates, where you should see blank metal, is missing. the same with his green box on his right leg.
the last point are his folds on his red overalls in the pelvis and some in chest area. they look more like squezzed metal. some look very sharp-edged than round.

but overall just :buttrock:
what resolution is the texturesize (1024* for all i would guess)?

08-25-2004, 10:24 PM
Thats awesome ! First rate stuff.

08-25-2004, 10:34 PM
Must be atleast 60 ppl viewing this thread rite now! thats got to be sayin somthin bout ur work! too good, very eye catching!

08-25-2004, 10:39 PM
wow. that's really good. doesn't look like an ingame model at all!

the normal mapping really helps. though in some places it really looks like you can see the low res texture. but it's awesome nonetheless!

btw, the logo on his shirt reminds me awfully of the thundercats logo :P

08-25-2004, 10:46 PM
your studio continues to crank out just AMAZING work!

08-25-2004, 10:51 PM
Looks awesome, but is it rendered with the game engine or with 3dsmax ?

if it is rendered with the game engine it is really impressive i think

08-25-2004, 11:09 PM
Rigged animations would probably be draw dropping lovely!

After looking at the Nizzi website, I saw some other works I enjoyed in the past. Especially the Wonder Twins painting. They should get modelled as Real-time or High Poly characters!

I'm going to have to make a folder on my computer devoted to alot of these works! heh.

08-25-2004, 11:10 PM
hey man really sweet game art.

I had never seen something from you, but I think both models (high-low), textures and render are just very well executed.

BTW Did you use Gnormal to render those normal maps? if not, could you explain to the community please? Thx man!

08-26-2004, 12:20 AM
Fantastic stuff as always Josh!

08-26-2004, 12:56 AM

08-26-2004, 02:41 AM

Ok I got one of those 3 down (can't wait to try Pitch Black MD). 2 more to go!

Amazing work Josh. How do you do those folds in the clothing? Bump map? It looks great. :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: out of 4 buttrocks.

08-26-2004, 05:20 PM
Really nothing more can be said, than what has already been said. It's just brilliant! What are you working on next; I would love to see more stuff!
Hats off to you Joshua. :buttrock:

08-26-2004, 09:23 PM
Wow thanks again! I'll probably post another character next week if you want to check her out.

wedge/amsams/JeePee/Lee3Pee: The lighting is not baked on. This image is a max render but it's using the same maps and mesh that is used in game. Not sure about posting an animation. I'm sure we'll release some movies online soon that show the character in motion.

MFTituS: I used 2 512s. I can see your point about the belt, but really most belts don't have lots of detail on them. The knee pads are not supposed to be metal, more like some futuristic plastic composite. :)

Menge: That logo was designed a long time ago. It's the Wolf's Dragoons logo from Battletech fiction - which our game is based.

DDS: I painted the maps in grayscale and then converted them to normal maps with the NVidia plugin for Photoshop.

Titan: You interviewed for a concept artist position? Did we eat lunch at Biaggis?

08-27-2004, 12:10 AM
Excelent work with modeling and textures!

08-27-2004, 12:11 AM

08-27-2004, 04:55 AM
