Nicely done.... but dont you think you should give some credit to Mr. Harryhausen?

08 August 2004, 05:43 AM
really nice job .... ...!!!"

i like the character feel

Nicely done.... but dont you think you should give some credit to Mr. Harryhausen?
i figured that went without saying -- we are all just mere mortals

thanks for making that point

COTT and SinbadATEOTT are deeply etched into my psyche. doing this model was just another excuse to watch COTT on DVD:bounce:

Glad to hear there are still a few of Rays die-hard fans out there. It gets a tad disconcerting when when you mention his name to a group of so-called vfx fans and are met with dumb stares..........

Love your work!

08 August 2004, 06:38 AM
really great stuff! the modeling, textures and lighting all look great! i gave you 4 stars

08 August 2004, 06:54 AM
Very nice!
But maybe he should stop smoking, look at the color of his skin :D

08 August 2004, 07:00 AM
really great stuff! the modeling, textures and lighting all look great! i gave you 4 stars
i totally agree!!...great work on amazed!!!:eek::applause:

08 August 2004, 07:25 AM
nice character modeling. without using too much emotion you've put a clear personality in him. I also like the way the cigaret is dangling from his mouth. Very natural, something people often get wrong when they make a pose like this.

Great texturing and the hair.... welll.. top notch (what did you use for the hair?)

08 August 2004, 10:29 AM
Awesome texturing and lighting (specially the eyes)! Can't crit on that! :buttrock:

08 August 2004, 10:53 AM
Hey Matt...
Thats awasome... the texturing has come out to be exclnt...
the character looks great..... perfect modelling !!

08 August 2004, 10:53 AM
hehe :) nice character, i like it, 5 stars!

08 August 2004, 12:11 PM
Fantastic. Looks exactly how I remember him from the movie.

Man, I have to go and get that one and watch it again now.

08 August 2004, 01:02 PM
Wow! its ugly but gorgeous!

08 August 2004, 02:14 PM
He is so alive. Bravo. 5 stars from me.

08 August 2004, 02:54 PM
Wow man!!!

And here i thought maybe you just specialized in beautiful women and the occasional monkey man, then last night i find this!!!

You really do awesome work, i like your model more than the original makeup'd actor from the film (which i have been a fan of ever since i was little). It's artwork like yours that makes me want to sit infront of this blasted machine 18 hours at a streach, so that one day maybe my own work could be of the same quality and calibre.

Beautiful work, an inspiration for many no doubt (im sure others would agree with me there)!!! Keep it up as im sure we are all waiting to see your next works.

PS: I would love to see the tutorial section of your site develop. You should start with how you model fems since yours come out so good!!! :)

08 August 2004, 03:22 PM
Looks like Keith Richards.
Awesome render.

08 August 2004, 04:03 PM
matt, you're going to be one of my favorite modelers.. and texture painter.. to say nothing to the character itself that has a great power.

08 August 2004, 04:06 PM
I'm amazed!
great work! :applause: :applause: :applause:

08 August 2004, 04:17 PM
WOW.. Nice work .. Now I have to go home and watch the DVD ... I love that movie.

08 August 2004, 04:27 PM
To me your result looks less like a mask than the original, take that as a compliment, i too love Harryhausenīs work since long time...

and great work on your site matt, already added in my favourites.. :)

08 August 2004, 04:37 PM
Calibos is one of my all time favorites. You definitely got the looks of the actor under the mask (Neil McCarthy). This also reminds me of maybe the weekend Calibos the one everyone wants to hang out with. :) Great job

08 August 2004, 06:01 PM
you really captured the will look amazing animated.

He's like on a break from filming or what? hehe

08 August 2004, 06:47 PM
whooa, excellent, i like the lighting and the mod, the skin shader is great, good work:bounce:

08 August 2004, 07:10 PM
wow thats certainly on the mark for the on from what i can remember.
like the texturing also...and that left side of his face bluish highlight works really well.
would really love to see that animated...
horns look dark on side/edges for some reason...
its a very classy piece of work though bud...very impressive.

08 August 2004, 07:15 PM
Excellent work  I really like it.

btw- Mr. Harryhausen's ROCK!

08 August 2004, 07:20 PM
very nice matt. I like the skin texture a lot! also the attention drawn to the eyelids, texture wise, is very well done.

congrats for that,

08 August 2004, 07:26 PM
hmm...I'm not sure, if my latest critic came through at all. I'm still new to this site here.

well, here it goes again: I can't really critic that piece. it looks awesome! I like the skin texture the most. very nicely done! especially around the eyes! also the lighting looks quite fine to me.

concrats for that one!

08 August 2004, 09:49 PM
very nice !!! good render

08 August 2004, 10:32 PM
Geez, this one is amazing, Matt! Your work seems to have gotten even more refined since your Monkey Man character. Like everyone else in this thread, I really like the modeling, texturing, and lighting in this image. The hair looks amazing... you definitely captured that scraggly look that the original Calibos had. Your CG work has given the character new life and I might have to change my opinion of ol' Calibos. Ray Harryhausen was at school recently promoting his book... too bad he didn't get a chance to see this! He'd definitely be flattered. Keep up the great work dude!

08 August 2004, 01:23 AM
Nice tribute to Clash of the Titans. And I swear it is beautifully ugly. Great job. Lighting is rather plain ;) but hehe I'm picky

08 August 2004, 01:42 AM
Nicely done.... but dont you think you should give some credit to Mr. Harryhausen?
No more than Mr. McCarthy.

08 August 2004, 01:46 AM
The skinīs shader is very, very perfect and wonderfull. Congratulations!:applause:

Aaahh! The mormons are coming!!!

Just kiddin, I am one ;)

For those who don't know, there is a really goofy rumor that mormons have horns and such. I just love to make fun of people who actually believe that myth wherever I can. :)

08 August 2004, 02:25 AM
This so Cool!

Great work.:applause:

08 August 2004, 03:41 AM
Nice likeness of the Clash Of The Titans villian! Harryhausen is one of my major influences like many people who do this work/play.
Would love to see this guy walking around the way Harryhausen used to do it with the arms arched back and everything. Great job!
:applause: :applause: :applause: :applause:

08 August 2004, 05:05 AM
Looks like Angus Young of ACDC a bit. I think you captured Calibos very well...that guy was pretty evil looking in the movie, and you perfected him in 3D.

08 August 2004, 05:29 AM
Freaking brilliant on so many levels! Any chance of a wire?

*edit* nevermind.. I can read.. really.

Wow.. I looked at your other renders of the close up on the face, excellent job on the eyes, I feel like hes going to suddenly glance at me and look back real quick haha. awesome.

08 August 2004, 08:34 AM
very good, i like the lightning

08 August 2004, 08:39 AM
That's just Good, couldn't tell it was 3d or 3d or doctored photo. And I did notice (for the first time) excellent use of the Maya cloth pattern.

08 August 2004, 09:35 AM
i wonder how you made the speculars :hmm:

especially at the sweatshirt is very amazing/interesting...
did you use a special shader or did you mapped the little felty
look with specular maps?

courious to know the answer:bounce:

08 August 2004, 10:54 AM
also great stuff on your homepage

08 August 2004, 01:21 PM

08 August 2004, 01:25 PM
Would vote this a 5 if you added a pack of cigarettes rolled up in his sleeve.

08 August 2004, 01:36 PM
Holy Crap!!
I remember that movie and from what i remember, that's a good likeness. Killer modeling and texturing.

08 August 2004, 01:48 PM

08 August 2004, 02:55 PM

Very professional!

08 August 2004, 03:44 PM
Great re-visit to an excellent character. Ray Harryhausen is king!:applause:

08 August 2004, 03:48 PM
It's like him inbetween takes. Love the cigarette and the way the smoke hovers around him. Love it dude.

08 August 2004, 05:03 PM
I've not seen Clash of the Titans for years, but recognised this guy immediately from the thumbnail on the front page. Good work!

08 August 2004, 06:33 PM
incredible! Great pose, character, model, textures and lighting. Props! He has soo much character. And I truly do love the textures. Great job matt!

:bounce: Congrats on front page.

08 August 2004, 07:22 PM
rock on dude!

08 August 2004, 07:48 PM
Awesome work, I think the cloth texture could use a little work - the specular seems odd like it's made of some sort of plastic, but that's a very minor point.

08 August 2004, 08:41 PM
Me being a Harryhausen fanatic aside - this is indeed a fantastic work!

I would dearly love to see this character fully-rigged and animated.

08 August 2004, 08:54 PM
Great........Nice job :applause: :applause:

08 August 2004, 11:19 PM
Damnit! You got to it first! This model I mean. :scream:

I think it would be a great cg-challenge for ideas on a new Krakken or Medusa! (sorry Ray H., it's time)

Are they going to film an all new C.O.T.T. ? If so, I think they'll want to purchase Matt's sweet model!

08 August 2004, 11:41 PM
MAN this is really nice work Good Stuff

08 August 2004, 04:55 AM
