6 wheels you say,...
I think I'll need some more :D
Final Submission : (see end of thread for more views)

My first shot. Don't promise to finish but will give it a hard try.

WTF??? Duuuuuuude...... you can never go wrong with multiple wheels. :D

The idea is this :
this guy found an underground warehouse of ancient construction equipment situated next to a destructed military airport. Ofcourse everything was blown appart so nothing worked. But with his boy brother genius he made an increddible machine for all uses :D.

some radiousity to enhance visibility
02 February 2002, 08:00 AM
do you have a sketch showing how the final model will be? , i would love to see it.
good luck with the model
02 February 2002, 05:50 PM
I'm designing as I go mostly. Although I have a general idea where to go.
This is what I doodled. Allthough the design will probably deviate as I do research where different components can be made from (construction vehicles - airplane parts)

sweet looking wheels
02 February 2002, 05:44 PM
I'm still in. Had to do some research. Caterpilar website was very useful. Also had to set up ik for the first time.

thats texturing this one almost finished.
02 February 2002, 06:36 AM
started on the front hull. texture on the hull is a quick job just to get an idea of specular and reflection mapping. need to nurnie the hell out of it before seriously dirtying up the thing :D
02 February 2002, 07:31 AM
Very good idea - with the final textures it will look much better. Iīve found nothing to criticise ! Nice details on that 3-wheeled wheel ;)
Setting up the whole IK (and/or sceleton) will be a big job - good luck ! Hope to see that thing in action !
Donīt get lost - time is running away :D
02 February 2002, 05:08 PM
thanks for the heads up.
I know time is running out, I'll have some time free next week to catch up I hope. :D
02 February 2002, 07:57 AM
decided to go with a more angular look...
02 February 2002, 07:51 AM
some additions and dirtying up the texture
02 February 2002, 10:25 PM
There's a big diffference in the image below and the previous one : I learnt something valuable today. Procedurals can save time. If I had known that when I started I wouldn't have painted all those maps. On with the show... :D
02 February 2002, 04:26 AM
some small additions
02 February 2002, 05:30 AM
Cool design, like the wheel design
Can we get a different view (side would be cool)?
02 February 2002, 05:34 PM
I'll put one up tonight. I have a problem with the main scene right now. I think I messed up my IK settings and everything is screwed! Since I have been changing so much to the model structure (adding layers, deleting them,...) I can't blame LW not loading in the scene anymore.
02 February 2002, 05:34 PM
as requested, some views.
02 February 2002, 09:28 AM
Hey that's a pretty cool design. You know what might be cool is some kind of scorpion type tail/weapon or some kind of robotic arm/hand type thing on the front. Something swooping forward to balance it out. Anyway, keep it up....
02 February 2002, 05:16 PM
Thanks for the advise. A tail would be a good idea. I 'll look into that. :D
02 February 2002, 04:43 AM
The tail is coming along nicely. Thanks for the suggestion. Anybody else got any suggestions?

another day, another wip
02 February 2002, 02:58 AM
been playing a little today. just added some groovy lighting and too blue to be true sky. Like the contrast to the dark mechanical look of the tank. Will do the big tire at the back next.
02 February 2002, 05:04 AM
02 February 2002, 02:58 PM
I like the scorpion shape! very good idea!! but I think that a field of grass is not a good environment for a scorpion vehicle in a apocalyptic age :D :D :D :D
I suppose is still in progress. :)
Waiting for the next update
02 February 2002, 08:37 PM
Hi Pabbloz, I suppose a grass enviroment isn't that appropriate. It's just that I really like the contrast of the dark machinery and the green grass/blue sky. As a wip it's OK I guess... :D
02 February 2002, 03:47 AM
another wip. Still haven't found an appropriate background setting. Wheel's finished, need to join the rear wheel with the mail hull and add some thingamajygs and whatsamacallits
02 February 2002, 12:00 PM
yeah, that green grass reminds me of....mmmmh...just imagine playing golf and this thing shows up :D
I wanna see crushed golf carts and some rich people in those cages on the side of the vehicle :p
I like the super detailed wheels and arms on the side. Maybe you could add some more details to the 'hood' (handles, spare parts or just graticious bevels...).
02 February 2002, 05:53 PM
thanks, Yeah I need to detail that part. I was thinking of some form of containers, packing and stuff
03 March 2002, 03:34 AM
Decided to do away with the flakey enviroment and concentrate on the vehicle... Oh, and played with textures today :D
03 March 2002, 04:57 AM
Another test render. still tweaking the textures before continuing to add detail (just incase I need to stop - there's a deadline approaching :D).
03 March 2002, 05:22 AM
Looks nice, mucho progress since I last looked- then there where just 3 wheels :) Textring looks nice so far, may some non procedural stuff could help spotlight some of the imp. parts. Also some rounding/bashing in the back would be cool (on all thsoe sharp edges :))
Well see you,
03 March 2002, 05:33 AM
damn, I think I need to start playing around with procedural textures...how did you get the look of the edges ? Are you using f-edge or some other plugin ?
The front looks better and better. I also think you should bevel the edges of the back part a bit, especially the sharp edges of the triangle.
cool stuff !
03 March 2002, 06:25 AM
hey, thanks you guys.
I work with Lightwave. The plugin I use for the edges is edgefx. I want to wait with bashing things up after I sort of finished the thing. But will do. Thanks for the suggestion.
If I have the time I will break up the textures some more. For now I want to concentrate on finishing the model first.
I learnt a lot by entering this challenge. One of the things is to cut corners as much as you can if you're on a tight schedule.
03 March 2002, 05:32 PM
Ok, people. This is the end result. I'm sure this project won't be put away right now. I'd like to make an animation with it etc....
