View Full Version : PA Challenge -vehicle / character- Martin-Krol
02 February 2002, 01:23 AM
yesterday while my internet was down i was looking for inspiration and drawing, trying to come up with some concept art. ( though i kind of failed because it ended up looking like an armoured chocobo :(
ill make a few more concept sketches , and change the overall look.
ill put in a storyline probably by monday.
in the end i want to make it look closer to some of Yoshitaka Amanos work ( especially around FF6 )
02 February 2002, 01:48 AM
Very Ambitious, Amano san is one of those Illistrators you can look at for hours and still not figure out every detail. Ahh memorys of bigs and wedge :) Perhaps adopt a slightly different animal ? Are you going 2d or 3d ? (Amano works predomiantly in water color right?)
Nice to see a master join in :D ,
See you ,
02 February 2002, 01:49 AM
Ha, I love those lovable chocobos .... what about an animal that is ridden like a vehicle..given that it would need lots of protective gear to put it into that catagory reasonably...does that count....could be a sweet, but slight bend of the rules.?
02 February 2002, 05:18 AM
i think ill take some elements from the metal slug games as well:)
the machinery design in those games is bloody nuts.
expect some final concept images by end of tomorrow at the earliest.
02 February 2002, 05:08 PM
but i dont plan to start the 3d model until the 8th.
rought utline done. cleanup/ colour is next.
02 February 2002, 05:39 PM
liking the concept alot Martin, tho rough I can still feel the energy from the pose... good stuff
02 February 2002, 08:41 PM
i like tha fact that your vehicle is an animal going back to a difrent power source very origional and the gas mask (i think ) on the best is too cool !
02 February 2002, 09:51 PM
Hey! What happened to the armored Chocobo? ;) I'm really digging this new concept. Wouldn't this classify as a character now? Since it's a living being? Can't wait to see this puppy in all it's 3D glory. Watch out Pascal! :D
02 February 2002, 09:58 PM
yah i was debating about the gasmask thing.
i originally thought about not having it because since its a mechanical object it wouldnt need one...but it wasnt looking enough like an object from PA....so i tossed in a gasmask for fun and it fit..
but now it looks like its an organic thing...:(
anyway. its a transport thing for bully, and that classifies it as a vehicle in its own way :) guess i could edit the title to say vehicle/ character
02 February 2002, 05:20 AM
still long way to go.
02 February 2002, 05:47 AM
heh, she's a cutie.. great start, beautiful work..
can't wait to see it in 3d.. get modeling!! :]
02 February 2002, 05:57 AM
awesome stuff m8,
great design and a imposing stance, excellent shading, the colours look like theyre gonna turn out great,
love the head and the eyes,
I presume youll use mirai for this, Maybe you could do a little tutorial on the process im sure everyone here including me would love to see it. Im only just starting to explore Mirai :)
02 February 2002, 02:00 PM
loads to do. the lighting and highlights are still temporary,
for now i just been mainly painting in the shapes and detailing it.
02 February 2002, 02:15 PM
my friend, that looks excellent . . .
I am SOOO in love with the paint style . . .
here's some lovin for ya ;)
02 February 2002, 04:13 PM
Martin, thanx for not showing me earlier, now that I have a chance to see it damn!!! I'm loving that armour so much man... your sense of light is wild...keep going
02 February 2002, 07:51 PM
WTF ! how does this not get more replies than this ? really suprised the level of detail s terrific
02 February 2002, 11:16 PM
It looks pretty damn cool Ambient! This is one I'll definitely keep an eye on. :)
02 February 2002, 05:31 PM
02 February 2002, 09:41 PM
Hey, I formatted my hard drive.....I backed up my files in DOS!!!
Anyway, Great :D
02 February 2002, 03:41 AM
Really nice painting. It would be cool to see handpainting on your 3D armor when you get to it. The mechanical piece at the top suggests there is more going on on the top of the creature. Maybe add some more elements like an antenna and other gear (it looks like he'd have a saddle). Keep it up!
02 February 2002, 08:16 AM
Hey that's a really awesome design. He reminds me of the cat, CHURCH, in Pet Semetary. Creepy.
I would love to see this guy in 3D.
02 February 2002, 11:07 AM
Awesome detail but those color splotches are just amazing stuff all over between all the little shades. Reminds me of the cover Amano didi for EGM with gold leaf paint. Only crit would be to add this kinda texture/water color feel to the eye and region if your going for that style. Or maybe just a little variation in the iris etc.?? Can't wait to see more!
02 February 2002, 11:13 AM
Dang. I must say, you have packed quite a bit of detail in that painting so far. I especially like the neck and head details. And that scale pattern on the hose musta been fun, huh? ;) I can't really crit this as I see no flaws. Can't wait to see him in 3D. I only hope you can capture the same essence in 3D that you have in 2D.
02 February 2002, 10:04 PM
as always, excellent work martin.
02 February 2002, 10:45 PM
hopefully there`s now this thumbnail thing... It`s damn hard to follow this new challenge :D I totally missed your post martin!!
It looks terrific! But.. what is the resolution of your pict? you should make it higher res so details will be easier to work on..
And I`m not big fan of how the neck is attached to the body (below) I`m sure you gonna work on that ;)
02 February 2002, 12:46 PM
i accidently fell asleep for a few weeks! damn. now i got to work fast to catch up.
heres a doodle of the proportions for this lil guy.
( 700kb or so.)

02 February 2002, 09:01 AM
woah!...If these were martial arts movies The title would have been "S'krolls' of the apt sculptor" and the fighting style would be called "Drunken Sub-division".....:D :D :D
I like the way you bone and test animations even b4 the model is done...MORE! MORE! MO-O-O-RE!!!
02 February 2002, 12:54 PM
I dled it a little later, and it worked.
And what can one say, its extremly cool with these vids Martin, and the way u modeled the neckless...

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ! You work with Mirai ? How's that software ? I've never get a chance to have some real opinion on Mirai.
Looking at the video looks interesting.
Can you just tell me your feeling about it ?
I Also checked your (temp) site, the guy with glasses was made with Lightwave wasn't it ?
So you might know them both.
Man, your work is simply astounding ! The bone setup is incredible !
Defenetly a fan !
02 February 2002, 07:33 PM
Oh My God!!
don't you like do tutorials?!! :D :D
it's excelent!!! really cool!!! and original!! It moves the neck perfectly! clap clap clap clap!
02 February 2002, 07:49 PM
Haven't got a chance to see the vid yet, soon. Just one question, did you lay down the bones early to give yourself a feel for the size the character would be to help with the proportions? Some hyper detail is going to go on i bet. The poly count looks liek its going to go through the roof.
02 February 2002, 03:39 AM
That is looking very good!
edit - typo
02 February 2002, 04:29 AM
So thats what Mirai looks like. I like the Mirai GUI. Nice vids Martin, characters coming along nicely. Is it a character or a vehicle? Whatever it is the concept is w!cked. Nice work.

Keep it up!
03 March 2002, 03:05 PM

Great video as always. It might be really cool to see you exercise the whole character at the end like you did with the neck. Great work.
03 March 2002, 03:18 PM
Thanks a lot. Great video. Great work.
03 March 2002, 06:38 PM

03 March 2002, 06:06 PM
neat video. I wonīt ask how you recorded it or how much
ram your system has :-)
Iīve seen you often have links to references or admired
artists...do you also have some links to tutīs regarding
painting with Photoshop/painter.
I havenīt come across these techniques yet, seems itīs
a really creative way of adding color to good sketches ?
Thanks for sharing.
03 March 2002, 09:23 PM
