I'm going to be doing something like this later on (different animals) and the best thing you can do is get a camcorder (digital would be easier, even a cheap little one), videotape a dog or cat (if doing a cat) or go to the zoo and find the animal you want to animate (or something close), then capture it into your comp, make clips you can watch while animating and take stills of frames where there are significant "key poses' in their motion.
Best way to reference is from real life, not someone else's animation. Taking artisitc influence from someone else is fine, however.
