I have been thinking about this for the past few mins. I have spent the past few months trying to create figures in 3ds max, this as most of you will know its no easy task.
I then got my hands on poser this I found created good characters all be it pre packaged.
So my question is this.
Why are people still making characters in 3d studio is it because poser removes any real skill in creating realistic 3d characters so that the finnished image is not realy your creation?
More like window dressing if you will.

Bingo. That's why I don't like it. You can also give a model more character when you create it in a modeling program and not Poser.

I have come to understand that there is a market for Poser. But what turned me off on the package, (i had a limited exposure to version 4 i think it was) was how bad the mesh was. It was really heavy, and not laid out very well at all. Deforming a mesh generated in Poser was a nightmare at best.
It may have improved since then, i don't know, but i'll never go back to the dark side. ;)

ok I have decided poser is not for me as I was looking at a selection of galleries which were poser based and the images all seemed very similar. So I have decided to try and make my own person in 3ds max, this I fear will be crap

I'm not a fan of Poser as everything looks so familiar but I have to admit that the models have been getting better and better with the last couple of releases.
Why buy fresh food to cook a nice meal when you can get microwave ready meals which you can prepare with far less effort ? Okay bad metaphor. Or is it a simile ?

I personally don't see a problem with using poser as a tool. The new version is kinda cool how you can take any picture of a face and map it onto your model and it does a reasonable job of doing this and it's way easier to do than any major 3d app. I can't imagine animating anything in poser though as it's clunky as hell and kinda slow. I don't personally use poser but if i had a situation where i needed a few background people with distinct faces i'd consider using it.
The main problem i see with poser is the end result models are almost always immediately distinguishable as Poser material. It's very difficult to make them not look like poser.
Poser isn't really that bad of an app, strangely enough it's my opinion that posers own community basically killed poser as a viable and respected 3d app. 95% of the stuff that comes out of poser is basically soft porn and i think most of the "legitamate" 3d community regards poser as a push button porn generator. It's really too bad because if it didn't have this stigma attached i think it'd be situationally handy.

Actually, Tonic, I think it's more of an analogy. I think...? (Got some more HDRI junk for you, Tonic. I'll get to it one of these days.)
My beef with Poser is with the users. They take the meshes and then use just a colour map and crappy lighting. Unless under tight restrictions, a colour map alone just doesn't cut it for flesh. I wish more Poser posers would actually bother to paint a spec level, spec colour, gloss, and things. More maps and better lighting/rendering would go a long way towards being rid of the canned Poser look.
What swampthing said a mere minute before I did concerning the maps and canned look.
