View Full Version : Dark Castle, El Rafo (3D)

07-24-2004, 04:35 PM (

Hi there,

here is a 3D matte I did a few month Ago, after a design of my colleague Sparth, I tried to push the details in textures and 3D, and worked also on a Dark Atmosphere . I hope you'll like Its and give a few comments! :)
Done with 3Dsmax and Photoshop.

Here are a few closeups from a 1600pix render...

07-24-2004, 05:23 PM
I like it a lot. Very atmospheric.

The only thing that could be called a flaw in that picture is the alignment of that dark vortex above the castle. It looks a bit off. Maybe it's just my eyes, but it isn't aligned over to the castle, or more precisely, over the highest tower.

But otherwise, it's brilliant.

07-24-2004, 05:47 PM
cool atmosphere, can we see some indoor pics.

07-24-2004, 09:36 PM
Awesome stuff!! Great mood, and great building as well.

great job!! I agree with Wizdoc, you might want to move the vortox over to the left sliightly,

great mood, and I absolutely love the sky, although the vortex doesn't really fit :D

reminds me of prince of persia, which I know you were involved in with doing the backgrounds ;)

[ps] are those birds modeled or painted? And can we see a wire?

07-24-2004, 10:25 PM
Supernice! Reminds of the bigatures from LOTR. Love the tiles on the castle.

If I had to point out a flaw, I'd say the rocks in the FG look a bit flat & lo-poly.

thanks guys for these comments, Here is the wire ;)

and no, the birds are not 3D, they are painted in photoshop!

07-24-2004, 10:41 PM
Awesome image. I didn't see this from sparth, but it did remind me of some of his stuff. Very nice atmosphere and lighting to make this awesome castle image more dramatic. I guess I agree about the vortex thing, but I personally don't think it matters that much. On another note, I think the art direction on PofP was excellent, and in all honesty it was probably my favorite part of the game.

07-24-2004, 10:44 PM
Amazing! I am just about to embark on my first castle-modelling project (neuschwanstein castle in germany) and this is truly inspirational, although in a different category (and class!)

07-24-2004, 10:51 PM
great atmosphere and work :applause:

07-24-2004, 11:34 PM
Waaaw, massive and overwelming feeling ! Nice tones and lightening as well. Appealing,... uh... gotta leave... It seems to be calling my name...

07-25-2004, 12:15 AM
The textures on the rocks give me the impression that this is a very tiny castle. Besides that one crit, I really like it!

07-25-2004, 12:41 AM
WoOoOoW !
Very impressive!

07-25-2004, 01:01 AM

I would like to know what you did on photoshop (filters, contrast, etc.) and maybe post a render only with Max.

07-25-2004, 01:31 AM
This is really awe inspiring. I'm going to really have to make a note to learn more about this.

07-25-2004, 01:51 AM
totally awesome, the camera angle makes it a even a more mammoth model !!!,with a lot of details...:applause: :applause::applause::applause:

07-25-2004, 02:05 AM
I have no problem with it. It's's just it looks like the whole thing was painted since the whole mood. But it looks really good and really realistic. Great job man keep it up!!

07-25-2004, 03:48 AM

Incredible work !!!!
J'adore l'atmosphere qui se dégage de cette scène, chapo bas !!!!
Peux tu nous en dire un peu plus sur ton set-up d'eclairage??

07-25-2004, 08:35 AM
Very nice work! Aside from the previous comments, I also think the foreground cliffs could use some more detail like cracks and different layers of rock. Inspiring work

07-25-2004, 10:20 AM
and maybe post a render only with Max.
:thumbsup:Hear hear, that would be awesome.

- Jonas

07-25-2004, 12:09 PM
lovely atmosphere.. modeling is good and overall nice pic

07-25-2004, 12:18 PM
awesome work! .. looks like something from Prince of Persia to me ..

07-25-2004, 12:52 PM
now THAT is talent....... the balance is superb - the whole atmosphere, the colour gradation, the delicate painting and the ability to know when to paint and when to model......

07-25-2004, 01:37 PM
Great work man! I like the dark atmosphere you created and the texture is just perfect!

07-25-2004, 02:37 PM
what an amazing piece of art!

thanks for sharing with us

07-25-2004, 02:51 PM
Hey there!

thanks for this positive feedback :)

now here is My light setup, no GI, only theatral lighting, omnis everywhere ;)

07-25-2004, 02:56 PM
realy great work

07-25-2004, 03:13 PM
Awesome picture...great modeling and lighting...

However...what could be done more...personally don´t think thw vortex is that much of an
issue..the clouds thou..thinkin..i would probably try to make them ..thicker,with more textured shadows on th clouds themself..

and many others...the rocks might be in higher polygon counts or better shaped..maybe
lots of more smaller shards..

What gives a little painted feeling over the mist/fog..that seems to be painted in..
and theres to much of it to high up..maybe would look nicer if the mist stays more close
to the water....or try to fade out the mist higher up..

07-25-2004, 03:32 PM
Cool Dude love the building could do with some more colours though, maybe?
Sweet animation!

07-25-2004, 03:37 PM
That is absolutely beautiful =) Was this related to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time? I just picked up that game this week and the architecture and design reminds me of the game. Just curious =)

Hey Aaron, I was Art Director for PoP sands of time, so maybe you can find some elements of the games's Atmosphere :)

07-25-2004, 05:25 PM
"I was Art Director for PoP sands of time"

lol, that explains it :scream:

i love the model. was it influenced in any way by ganon's castle in the ocarina of time? i ask because the spikes all over the castle and the vortex of dark clouds over it are very reminiscient of it.

07-25-2004, 05:46 PM
oui, vraiment chouette... moi aussi ça me rappelait "prince of persia".. mais j´ai lu les autres threads... c´est de la recup.. au l´aut he... bon je blague ;)

07-25-2004, 05:52 PM
the most beautiful CG castle I've ever seen..that vortex is stunning and is a wonderful add-on..everything is perfect imo!! wonderful job!!!

07-25-2004, 06:08 PM
oh man you are such a good artist keep it up good atmospheric effects

07-25-2004, 07:26 PM
Great pic indeed!
Nothing to critic, it gives the mood to me!

07-25-2004, 08:06 PM
Very nice image, I love the scale of it and the atmosphere.

07-25-2004, 08:31 PM
great job
but some case you may think more and keep working on that .
. some parts should be darker that it is ( contrast )
. the perspective of the sky dose't much the pers of the building .
. maybe it would be better if you increase the bumpness off the texutre.

keep working:thumbsup:

07-25-2004, 09:43 PM
Well dang that is just amazing bout the only thing I can use to describe that very realistic looking. Can't even tell where the background begins or the model ends. Top notch work.

07-25-2004, 10:36 PM
I'm curious, did you paint the textures in post after that render over a 2D image or is that "plain" 3D image just some early, untextured test version?

07-25-2004, 10:43 PM
Beautiful work !!!

gerat work..!!!

07-27-2004, 08:19 PM
is that water at the very bottom in the foreground?

great image. The architecture looks very strong and imposing

07-28-2004, 12:19 AM
First of all: very, very nice! I really love the PoP atmosphere.

Things I noticed you might find helpful:

- The vortex, as said before, but I think if you would've placed it on the upper left side of the tower it would look better. It's just that it gives the impression that it should be vertically above the tower while in fact it's not. Imagine looking straight up from the tower like this. Was it your intention to put it there?

- The water seems be reflecting too much on the left side (it's water, yes?).

- The birds are copied... a lot. Most noticable with the two upper flocks. It seems you only painted only one original flock out of six/seven visible. The above two are flipped horizontally and the others are scaled and adjusted a bit :) Also the lower birds could use a bit of diffuse glow as they're almost flying in front of the sun. Don't take this in a wrong way, but I think that copying the birds like that brings down the suberb quality a bit.

Hope to see more of your work soon!

- Rens

P.S. Didn't notice the thread title until now. Is it somehow related to the old Mac game Dark Castle? With the crows and all. Damn I loved that game :)

07-28-2004, 02:49 AM
I have noticed this details :) yeah If I had more time It could improve a bit the "finition"

btw, sorry, it is not related to the mac game!

07-28-2004, 03:24 AM
ok.. thats friggin awsome!!

make a wallpaper like that!
how long u been into graphics?
looks like u got 10+ years of experience lol

07-28-2004, 06:16 AM

07-30-2004, 11:42 AM
Very nice work... it's a concept for the next POP ?

08-02-2004, 05:47 AM
I see what U mean about the swirling vortex above the castle. It does look a bit off center, but great mood otherwise!

08-03-2004, 03:56 AM
Oh Raphael,

It's gorgeous, it is so obvious that you do photographie, you've got the eye, you know lighting, you know composition, you're a genious , I went to your site and wow! Your lighting is just amazing, and everithing'else too... :)

08-23-2004, 09:27 PM
Waouwww, this pictures is Beautiful!
I'm new here, but just one thing can be better for me ( d'après ce que j'ai pu voir de tes autres images-sorry i don't know how to write this in english  ), is the texture of the rock...
it's cool, but i'm sure that you can do better.

But it's very coooool! :applause:

10-09-2004, 09:58 AM
very great textures.

10-09-2004, 11:29 AM
Really like the pic. Maybe add some tattered banners or flags, tapestry hanging from the 'balcony' to break up the colours a tiny bit. If they were slightly blured by motion it could add that 'wind day' feel to it too.

Just being picky looks great so far :)
